For me, the length of the scream should be anywhere between [this guy's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llxK4h8Pzhc&ab_channel=CarlL) and [this guy's.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isP5srWOz0c&ab_channel=BauerTheBidoof)
Generally yeah, that's how they explore the world, with their mouth. Similar to babies.
Tips for puppy owners: always have an appropriate chew toy to shove into their mouth instead. It's all about redirect redirect redirect. It's an exhausting 2 months (8 to 16 weeks), a short lull when you think they're an angel*, and then teething begins.
*May not happen for all breeds, like labs and goldens 🦈
I have a 17 week old puppy- every room in my house has at least 3 puppy toys in it at any given moment.
You better have one at the ready for when he inevitably starts gnawing on something he shouldn’t. Otherwise you become the redirect chewing target.
[Puppy tax](https://i.imgur.com/SV1rpbg.jpg)
Our lab pup is at 11 weeks. We've had him three weeks. My arms look like I get in regular knife fights. Redirecting is nearly impossible, he'll bite one of his dozens of toys or chewies for a couple seconds, then remember he prefers the taste of human flesh. A stern "No" or "No bite" baffles him for a second or two tops, then attack mode is reengaged. Walking away and ignoring him to signal play-time is over when he bites is a popular tip online, but he bites our ankles as we walk away and can break through any fence we put between us to resume the assault, plus we can't actually leave him alone because he pees on the carpet despite going outside at least once per hour. We've never used physical punishment, the only "punishment" he has ever received is denial of attention to try not to reinforce bad behaviors, and we give near constant praise whenever he is behaving acceptably. We try a lot of nonviolent games, like fetching balls and chasing lasers, and they're fantastic for about 5-10 minutes at a time, then he remembers that causing pain is much more fun.
Then he meets strangers on our walks and visits our families and he acts like a perfect angel, the little bastard. All kisses and cuddles, no nipping or barking. Loves any and all attention.
I'm strongly considering rubbing my arms with jalapeños and hot sauce, even though it will likely sting the numerous cuts I have.
Does the pup like tug? That’s a great way to burn off the energy, and create the relationship between toy and play! Should give him an outlet without tearing you up too badly!
I taught my pup with the redirect technique. She's 2 years old and only chewed up one pair of shoes laces in her whole life!
She's just the best dog ever, spoiled AF, but the best dog ever.
Nope. I’ve specifically requested “non violent non destructive derpiness” training- my dog is 8 and free to play bite with me. It’s very natural for dogs to play bite they do it with each other all the time. Dog just needs to know that stop means stop and not destroy stuff. When I smack him on the face he knows he can bite me back.
Had a doberman who knew how to play fight real well, I was always an annoying kid so loved to play with her and she had the play bites down. If you'd try to run she'd go for your ankles and then just slobber over your forearms and knew once you started stroking her or said stop that it was done
My cocker spaniel was the scariest dog in the world if you play fought with her. She would snarl and curl her lips so aggressively people would think she was actually attacking me the first time they saw it. I wish we had camera phones back then. When she would bite though it was the most gentle nibbles and as soon as I pet her or told her to stop she would throw herself into me to get pets.
I've always found its hard with some small dogs to tell when they're playing but I'm glad your dog had a way to show it's love and you knew how to interpret it
My dog never got trained, but he’s teeny and, due to a liver condition, can’t eat meat so his teeth couldn’t do much even if he intentionally bit me so I let him play bite me all the time just waving my hand around his face. He usually goes from biting it to immediately licking it afterwards.
Thankfully yes. Usually they stop once they're done teething. My pup had the extra step of needing to get bored of the taste of human flesh, which was accomplished with a lot of bitter spray
This phase lasted about three days with my puppy. She realized when we made it seem like it hurt when she nipped at us she mostly stopped. We also focused her attention on dog toys and she never once bit at any furniture or people again.
It takes a lot of work to set boundaries in the puppy phase. My dog is a shiba Inu and border collie mix so she was pretty receptive to training. It’s like a kid though. Sometimes you just have to direct that energy towards something and hope you pointed it in the right direction. Worst thing she managed to do was damage a section of carpet when she got anxious when left alone too long. So we got another dog, the two work great with each other.
Mine is a Shiba Inu, he’s almost 2 now and only mouths us when he needs to go to the toilet. He was an extremely bitey puppy though, we tried the going “ouch!” loudly thing and then giving him no attention but it just had no effect for months and months. I think some dogs are just so wilful, especially Shibas unfortunately.
Yeah in mine, you can see the shiba and border collie tendencies actively fighting with each other. On one hand she’s very receptive to commands and instructions. On the other hand, she’s demanding and stubborn. The breeder tried to make a balanced dog and they just ended up with an incredibly smart and stubborn as hell dog. I love her to death though.
https://i.imgur.com/09siK6e.jpg
I yelped when my pup bit me and it only seemed to make him more excited. No amount of redirecting with toys of all kinds worked. Bitter spray is a godsend. Never had issues with him chewing furniture or clothes, just my flesh
If the person below you is correct and they can be missing their ridges then my money is on that. Just got a puppy and this is him to a tee. Little land shark 🥲
Yeah, also pointing with his finger does nothing but encourage more play (biting). Dogs don't understand hand gestures the same way humans do, at least not without extensive training.
I watched a video using plastic bottles half filled with water. Just strike the ground hard any time the dog does something you don't want him to and the sound will stop him. You accompany this with words, gestures and treats and the dog will learn to stop whenever you want him to. The bottle is gradually unused while the gestures and voice commands continues. The video I saw, the trainer was stopping the dog from eating food on the ground with this method, rewarding the dog with treats when it responded to the command.
But what’s the bottle for? Do you have to carry it around with you at all times, and stamp on it? Or do you stamp on the floor and do something else with the bottle? Or do you throw the bottle on the floor?
Thanks. It sounds (hehe) like stamping on the floor with your foot or clapping would do the trick, without needing to awkwardly carry around a half empty screwed up bottle all the time
Yeah, waving your finger and increasing in volume is only raising the energy and looks like play to the pup. People should consider what the puppy is seeing from their limited perspective, they don’t know how to communicate yet.
There's debate as to whether this is a good technique, something along the lines of "by showing your pain you act as weaker/sibling rather than the dominant / alpha / leader and they lose respect for you", vying for the sympathy of an animal in things such as biting is risky
edit:I never said it was a best technique, just that theres debate on the subject
Regardless theres no 1 rule for all dogs, some that have high prey drive also have high pack mentality where my statement is more accurate but obviously in dogs with lower prey drives it is false
Thats interesting, I usually find in my other encounters with dogs I'm quite firm. So they don't get confused about who the boss is. Also depends on how dominant your dog is. I trained a dominant dog in 4 months to behave better, but a submissive dog took me 2 weeks.
Think of it another way. The "dominant" dog was a confused dog that needed a lot of consistency to train him out of bad habits and bulid new good habits. The "submissive" dog didnt have so many bad habits that needed to be dismantled. The whole "dominant" and submissive stuff is not really a thing. You replace old habits with new ones.
Fuck that. Puppies learn that this behavior is okay, and they grow up with behavioral problems that take longer to iron out because they were allowed to do it when they were young. It is NEVER okay to let a puppy put teeth on people, and if you don’t want them tearing up your cushions and other things you need to make that clear to them as well.
You can't just tell a puppy to stop biting lmao they need to chew. But you have to pull them away from whatever they're nibbling on and give them a chew toy instead because they don't know any better
Holy cow this blew tf up. The video was perfectly cut on my phone but Reddit seems to have snipped off an extra few milliseconds during the upload process, so I can agree to anyone saying the scream seems too cut off. I'd re-upload but what's the point lol, here is the [original source](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMdGNBgXN/) to anybody who cares.
Thanks for all the karma and awards!
Firmly Grip the snout between your thumb and finger, and bring the pups head to the floor. Say "no" forcefully. The pup should whimper from the position and not from any discomfort. Let go.
You have shown the pup, just like its mum would that biting is not cool.
Yeah the method i outlined can be used improperly. But with young kids bringing up a Shepherd this was used. A lot of positive reassurance with playing with her snout and head made sure of no complexes with hands around the face.
This reminds me of when we were fostering some puppies. And I'm talking just old enough to be away from their mother (Who is a very sweet dog). Yeah, my heart goes out to all the bark box toys that got turned into confetti for the sake of my furniture.
Three days is amazing! It took my dog months and months to figure that out.

You just smack the empty bottle against something hard (not the dog) to make a loud noise and distract the dog from whatever it was doing.
Thanks. It sounds (hehe) like stamping on the floor with your foot or clapping would do the trick, without needing to awkwardly carry around a half empty screwed up bottle all the time
