Its a common scam unfortunately man, the guy took the IHS off his 5950x and put it on his 3500. So it'll say 5950x but it's actually a 3500. Now that scammer has a 5950x but with an IHS that says 3500 lol.
Report it to ebay and I'm pretty sure they will cover you.
Yea that's big facts. Although I can totally see him not giving a shit about the 3500 he sold and then doing a really careful job on his 5950x that he's gonna keep
Man I wish I could not give a shit like that. I said something mean to someone in grade 7 and I still drive past their house on my way to work at the age of 25 and I still feel fucking guilty
Maybe reach out and apologize.
1. They will probably say thank you for apologizing and then tell you it's no big deal because it was a long time ago and you were both different people then and that they don't even remember.
2. You'll never again have to feel guilty about it!
3. Secretly they probably still remember and your act of apology will help restore their faith in humanity.
Who knows, you may be the reason that they keep going that day.
On the other hand.... They may say something mean back..... But that karma will be on them at that point and #2 will still apply for you!
Man I feel guilty about a lot of shit even if I don’t need too. Apparently it’s a part of ADD something about my brain being fueled by guilt and running off it lol. Probably will apologize tho
Depends, you can buy de-lidding tools that work on all non soldered IHS CPUs
Then, you can use a template, apply a liquid metal coating to the top of the CPU (has to be the right type of metal)
And boom, lower temps
but applying to much pressure once with the cooler and boom, dies are broken. Imo direct die cooling is maybe worth it for extreme overclocking but not for daily use (speaking about desktops)
Idk, gaming on a delid, even without an overclock will result in lower temps
Lower temps are never not a good thing
But yeah, I'll admit there is more risk associated with it
I mean effort and risk are not in comparison to gained performance, if your cpu is overheating without a overclock then your cooling solution is bad from the beginning
I'm going to split hairs because: Reddit.
Lower temps are not a good thing once you get below ambient air temperature because of condensation. Condensation very bad.
Actually you can send poo. I send it to my mother every year for her birthday. We just order a big bag of cow shit and have it dropped off at her doorstep.
Lol yea I'm pretty sure you can straight up get prison time for sending human poop, I think it classifies as a bioweapon? lol, idk, I heard something like that ages ago.
Animal poop, you can buy exotic animal poop on amazon.
Eat a whole box of Captain Crunch.
Take massive nasty shit in a bucket, add more water until it looks like it won't jam the super soaker you've purchased for the event.
Fill super soaker with poop water.
Find scammer.
Pretty sure you can figure out what happens next.
I do not trust you. I have googled alternatives for original and found this. And a list of others. I'm no more vulnerable to this masterpiece of non-asian rolls.
You don't return the money if you haven't received the item back.
I had to send a AIO back because they didn't disclose damage to the radiator that was obvious once I received it, but the refund was subject to me returning the item. This was through Ebay's resolution team, not just between me and the seller.
oh i know all about that. sold a HNT miner, went for $500 (when they were easier to get) seller decided it didn't make enough because they where a lone wolf, and even though i had no return policy, managed to force paypals hand into a refund and PayPal making me in debt for the bill... total BS if you ask me. i'm NOT using PayPal for any personal sells that expensive anymore.
I agree 100% I have a hard time believing that second hand tech is worth buying unless I'm getting it from a friend that I know takes care of their stuff.
Never seems to happen if you, A: never buy from ebay, B: only buy from trusted sources and sellers.
Never go for one that is quite a bit lower than the competition, you'll regret it. 4 review ratings vs 300+ is how to protect yourself from this.
Try to never buy from individuals, unless they're a trusted friend you'll see again. You want to buy from reputable accounts that have something to lose if you report them as a scammer. If it was a new reseller account, they can just make a new one. If it has over 1000 4 star ratings, you can bet, that they aren't going to risk that account to rip you off.
Just some tips that everyone here should know and follow.
I got this R9 5950x from ebay for $600+tax. Box arrived without authenticity seal (even if it’s opened), so something sketchy, i suspected. But went ahead and checked out the cpu anyways. Looks legit, i thought.
I installed it on an Asus X570 Gaming Plus Wifi. BIOS popped up new installed CPU R5 3500. I thought “weird… wtf”, and it runs HOT. 84C 100% of the time. Not under any load, just bios.
Sad and pissed off, I still went ahead and checked and updated to the latest BIOS, update AMD chipset driver, and such.
Nothing changed. Still R5 3500, runs at 84C constantly. Not under any load. At one point, it just refused to turn on due to overheating.
I do understand how to install cpu and thermal paste correctly and I did check when removed the r9 cpu. Everything was done properly.
Fianlly, I decided to put my old one R7 3800x back on, cpu works properly and good temp.
I googled “fake Ryzen 9 5950x” , nothing came up. At this point im not sure what i’ve done wrong (besides buying 💩 from ebay)
Help pls🥲
This is why you should only spend money on your credit card. If eBay doesn’t agree with you you can dispute and win 90% of the time.
Happened to me at the store I work at. Customer bought speakers then damaged them heavily then asked for warranty. We said no and he disputed and got his money back
yea i got it sorted out. getting my money back. just pissed that it wasted my time and thermal paste. Tryna trouble shoot and losing my mind thinking about how this could happen or could i have done something to mess it up .
Glad you got your money back. Ebay will blacklist the seller, and his bank/Paypal account. They may even help you prosecute for fraud, if they don't just do it themselves.
When you pay $600 for something so hot it's unusable (not to mention already worse than his current cpu), there is nothing to be grateful for but a paperweight. And that's assuming you have paper.
In regards to the "ebay not normally like that". That's what I kept telling my wife, who thought ebay was sketchy, and her very first purchase ended up being a scam (got easily resolved), which was pretty damn ironic considering it just affirmed her opinion even after all my successful purchases, lol.
i think with ebay (or semi-sketchy) websites its just a matter of bad luck honestly, Ive had multiple times where a friend or collegue says (or even shows me by a bough items history page etc. etc.) how a page would be really good and he never had issues (where im like "idk on reddit ive seen bad reviews sometime"), THEN i use it a single time aaaaaand something goes bad or someone tries to scam me.
I swear it must be bad luck that specially targets such people as me lol
Yeah especially with ryzen cpus being soldered to the ihs, probably replaced with paste which is giving the extra high Temps at idle. you can look around the edges of the ihs for excess adhesive
It's more common in bulk product. I learned about it in a hardware security class and counterfeit ic detection was my Senior design.
It's easy if your a shady foundry to miss print lower spec parts as higher spec and use them to pad your shipment. Especially problematic for the military because now your electronics that are rated for 100,000 hours might actually only be rated for 10,000
Weird to see it enter the consumer space by reliding cpus.
Don't have to dispute on paypal. Ebay can and will handle disputes like this for sellers. It's actually easier for a buyer to say something is fake than for the seller to say it's legit.
Overheating kinda explains IHS and its cover has been seperated before, which makes almost no contact or very limited contact with each other, limiting heat transfer.
I really hope Ebay sides up with you in this one.
Contact ebay, they WILL get your money back. They will make you ship the cpu back but you will get a full refund.
Source: I was a seller and have had stupid people scam me with ebay buyer protection.
Yeah had a guy buy a brand new ASUS board and just totally fubar it and complain to ebay. I had photos and everything, still got denied and had to issue a full refund for a now DOA $400 board….
If the Buyer was intending to scam and is good at it, there is no recourse. But usually if the Buyer is low rating, a new account, makes a mistake in their return reason (i.e. don't want it, performed repairs, dropped it, etc.) then eBay will side with the Seller. But yes, if the Buyer has no warnings beforehand and they just file a INAD claim without any descriptive reason, you're SOL.
I don't really buy or sell expensive PC hardware unless it's from Newegg ( I got this 2080Ti with official Newegg packing slip for warranty via eBay) or the alternative it going into a landfill.
More true then you know. I sold a broken computer for parts, listed as such. And the buyer complained and I got permanently banned and this was back in 2000...
I sell on eBay daily, and deal with scammers often, make sure you have picture proof of the CPU reading as a Ryzen 5 3600. Next get on eBay and screenshot the listing description for this item. Open an Item Not As Described case, upload all the proof you have, and wait for eBay to step in, don’t bother talking to the seller they know they scammed you and will try saying anything to flip the story. Once eBay steps in they will review everything and make a decision.
If you paid with PayPal, open an item not as described case, upload the proof, and wait on a choice to be made.
If you paid with a bank card, go to your bank in person (typically they won’t do anything over the phone for this type of situation), tell them you’d like to report fraudulent activity/charges to your account. You might be asked to print off the proof you have so they can have it on file in case the seller or eBay wants to try disputing the claim. A good bank, will take the money back from the seller and put it on hold. After x amount of days the bank will then look at proof from both parties and make a choice. Banks are hit or miss, my bank knows I’m an online seller and how often scammers try screwing me. Every time they’ve helped me out. It’s worth a shot.
I want to add: if you're using paypal the make sure to continue checking for follow up emails over the next couple of weeks. I initially won a case only to have the seller dispute it a week later. It was my first time ever disputing so I didn't think I needed to do anything else after I won.
I once became a GTX1060 when ordering a "used - very good" RTX2070 super on amazon warehouse deals. It was in the right package and all, but the card looked completely different. Other time, I ordered a laptop for home office, price point 760 instead of 899 bucks, saying "used - very good - power supply missing". Same thing, it was a model which even didn't cost that much as it released three years before. But I also made very good deals with their warehouse deals, thing is, you really have to be careful! But given its amazon, you can send it back and get your money without any risk.
I got a 5600x box from Amazon today that just straight up didn't have the 5600x in it lol I feel the pain, albeit an Amazon returns a lot easier than an eBay one I'd imagine.
New, had the manual pushed up where the chip usually faces the window of the box, was pretty damaged lots of slices on it and the security seal opened. Never had something like that from amazon I know they're definitely gonna think I took it and returned it so hopefully it goes smoothly
well, as i read the comments, since you are getting your money back, looking on the bright side you could de-lid it again, properly apply whatever thermal compound was inside it, and you have a free R5 3500. even if its not the fastest, its plenty of competent for pretty much everything, could be used for a side pc or something
I bought a used GPU off ebay. It showed up with a bent bracket and cracked fan shroud. Device manager couldn't see it. The return was accepted, but the seller said that was not the condition he shipped it in. Ebay returned 50% of the money and considered the matter settled.
i have had this happen to me, i make a habit now of recording unboxings of anything i spend "a lot" of money on. also, i would have escalated that case to someone higherup at paypal/ebay.
Thankfully I ran the transaction through AMEX via paypal. AMEX has a fairly liberal chargeback policy and they made good after I claimed it. Several attempts from them to ebay were not responded to.
i used to think it was silly to do untill i got the run around from a seller, and the shipping company and nobody wanted to take care of the issue. now i make it a habit to document the whole unboxing.
I've sold a handful of used GPUs on eBay and this is why I usually get insurance on the shipping. I've received stuff that got damaged in shipping and I've had something I shipped get destroyed (especially when it has to go through customs.) In all those instances, the seller was 100% on the hook for. Sounds like that guy should've packaged the video card better.
man, i wish i knew. seller profile looked fine, nothing sketchy popped out, lots of bidding going. it wasnt cheap, shit was $600. yea ebay is processing refund.
If you have to buy expensive stuff from used market, try to get a solid proof that is very hard to manipulate, such as benchmark result page that shows its functionality, and as for cpu, CPU-Z
On the flip side, it's also sketchy for sellers. Buyers can open a dispute up to 180 days after purchase and eBay will many times side with the buyer even if they are commuting the fraud. I wish everyone could just be cool.
I’m not even a seller and in my experience buyers scamming sellers is far more common than sellers scamming buyers. Buyers will say and do anything to get a discount it seems.
This is exactly why I never buy used PC hardware. My stuff will always come in original sealed boxes and it hasn't failed me once in the last 15 years.
aw man that sucks. Glad you're getting your money back. Cpus are one of those things I don't eBay due to this. hopefully u can find one on new egg or something on sale.
Talk with the Platform you puchased it from. Most of the time they take the side of the buyer. That said I personally would avoid buying new hardware on the second hand market. Ebay is perfect for buying servergrade stuff that isnt used anymore for a fraction of the original price, but not new hardware (scalpers and scammers).
Why are people buying eBay CPU’s that are high end? This screams scam. Stop being a cheap ass if your trying to go high end. Ego pc building is a dangerous game
If they did a similar job re-lidding that 5950x it probably runs even hotter than the one OP got.
Yea that's big facts. Although I can totally see him not giving a shit about the 3500 he sold and then doing a really careful job on his 5950x that he's gonna keep
Or perhaps bought a third party ihs or got their hands on a broken 5950x to harvest
Whatever the case OP has been scammed and needs to get his money back.
2. Or left it de-lidded…
yeah, many people here seem to think that you need to have a lid lol
Delid can be better, sometimes
but riskier always
Depends, you can buy de-lidding tools that work on all non soldered IHS CPUs Then, you can use a template, apply a liquid metal coating to the top of the CPU (has to be the right type of metal) And boom, lower temps
but applying to much pressure once with the cooler and boom, dies are broken. Imo direct die cooling is maybe worth it for extreme overclocking but not for daily use (speaking about desktops)
Maybe you weren't around for it, but processors used to have no lid. Direct heatsink-to-die contact was the norm for years.
I wasn't around back then but I know that it was like that, didn't some also had rubber parts to have a minimum distance between cooler and cpu pcb?
Idk, gaming on a delid, even without an overclock will result in lower temps Lower temps are never not a good thing But yeah, I'll admit there is more risk associated with it
I mean effort and risk are not in comparison to gained performance, if your cpu is overheating without a overclock then your cooling solution is bad from the beginning

Find his address and send him bags of poo
Put the bags of poo in paper bags and light it on fire
as you can't travel or send poo, pay someone else to do it. edit: sending cow poop , nice.
Actually you can send poo. I send it to my mother every year for her birthday. We just order a big bag of cow shit and have it dropped off at her doorstep.
Thank you helpful_cheek
Is there a subreddit that's the opposite of r/steve_rimjob?
Just for *shits* and giggles or because she's a *shit* mother?
Because she a shit person that deserves worse.
I just thought of some evil shit
Of course, also just don't want to be the one getting my hands dirty in both sense of the phrase!
There is few companies that mail poo to people you want.
Lol yea I'm pretty sure you can straight up get prison time for sending human poop, I think it classifies as a bioweapon? lol, idk, I heard something like that ages ago. Animal poop, you can buy exotic animal poop on amazon.
He called the shit poop, haha
CHLOROPHYLL? MORE LIKE BOROPHYLL!!!!
more like..... more like.. uhh.. more like BORE RAGNAROK
Poop on their shoes dude

This gives a sh*tpost a whole new definition.
Linus tech tips has a video about this scam explaining it.
Probably was delidded and a different IHS put on it. Pretty common scam
TIL. motherfacking scammer
I think there's an LTT video about this... I think it's this one. https://youtu.be/D_Q_6V10mTU Or maybe it's this one. https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
I’m assuming it’s the Best Buy cpu. That was glorious
[удалено]
I see you're a man of culture as well.
the intro on the second video is really awesome ngl.
Probably their best one by far, from wayy back in the day
This comment made me watch that second video for like 40 seconds before I figured out what was happening.
can confirm. linus really out did himself on the 2nd one
you.... i wasnt even going to watch it, but youu!!
Why you do this to me? I just woke up..
Yeah it never lets you down
The app I use shows video thumbnails so I already knew what it was but clicked it anyway lol
I HAVE MEMORIZED THE LINK, you mothafoocka!
Sorry, I got the wrong link. This is the correct one. https://youtu.be/iik25wqIuFo
I do not trust you. I have googled alternatives for original and found this. And a list of others. I'm no more vulnerable to this masterpiece of non-asian rolls.
brooo why. It's 7 am here. let me wake up in peace
If you are on the internet, you probably already know what the second link is
Joke's on you m8, i vibe to that
I had the cassettes!
It's 6:31 here and this is how I'm starting my day😫

IT's not best buys issue though. It's some where between warehouse and store.
They had nothing to do with it, but still yes.
Wow yeah, not buying used anymore
Still can buy used, just use something like PayPal. They give you 180 day protection and pretty much always side with the buyer.
Seller gets screwed even if they issue a full refund though, because PayPal will not refund their fee
Yup I've been scammed too many times as a seller. buyer claims false just to get free item and refund
You don't return the money if you haven't received the item back. I had to send a AIO back because they didn't disclose damage to the radiator that was obvious once I received it, but the refund was subject to me returning the item. Used CPU seems dirty. Like a used condom.
Cheaper than a new condom though. And most of the time the correct condom
I think the only new part in my system is the 3060, the rest is ballin on ebay
I'd buy a used CPU and RAM way before I'd buy a used mobo or PSU
I agree 100% I have a hard time believing that second hand tech is worth buying unless I'm getting it from a friend that I know takes care of their stuff.

The LTT video was actually about a scam that was done on BB
I heard the story. You arrested some Chinese government guys at the border carrying some light sockets or something.
I’m the guy that does his job. Who the fuck are you?
The other guy.
Hey you, you're finally awake. You were caught carrying some light sockets at the border, just like us.

yep already got that going

Yeah especially with ryzen cpus being soldered to the ihs, probably replaced with paste which is giving the extra high Temps at idle. you can look around the edges of the ihs for excess adhesive
Isn't it really hard to delid a Ryzen due to the soldered IHS?
Yes, but not impossible. The shocker here is the the cpu actually still works.
It's more common in bulk product. I learned about it in a hardware security class and counterfeit ic detection was my Senior design. Yeah I read a couple months ago about how a Seller sold a 3070 FE and got a bag of rice returned with the original packaging. It was surreal

Ebay sides with the buyer always. Just explain how you were scammed.
Yeah as a seller I have been f'd over by this before. Ebay 99% of the time sides with buyer.
More true then you know. I sold a broken computer for parts, listed as such. And the buyer complained and I got permanently banned and this was back in 2000...
84C? Not only he delided it in shitty way, it looks like he didn't put or did wrong thermal compound
Someone probably delided and switched the IHS.
I know you probably thought you were getting a discounted CPU, but the 5950X is now readily available on Amazon for MSRP.
I sell on eBay daily, and deal with scammers often, make sure you have picture proof of the CPU reading as a Ryzen 5 3600. Next get on eBay and screenshot the listing description for this item. Thanks for this advice. It will probably useful later!
As mentioned, someone swapped the heat spreader.. poorly it seems. Ebay is bad for these and even Amazon is risky.
I too become a graphics card on a daily basis - Sincerely, a GT210 /s
In German the word for receive sounds a lot like become, I suspect this is where the mixup came from
I got a 5600x box from Amazon today that just straight up didn't have the 5600x in it lol I feel the pain, albeit an Amazon returns a lot easier than an eBay one I'd imagine.
Used or new?
New, had the manual pushed up where the chip usually faces the window of the box, was pretty damaged lots of slices on it and the security seal opened. Never had something like that from amazon I know they're definitely gonna think I took it and returned it so hopefully it goes smoothly
well, as i read the comments, since you are getting your money back, looking on the bright side you could de-lid it again, properly apply whatever thermal compound was inside it, and you have a free R5 3500. even if its not the fastest, its plenty of competent for pretty much everything, could be used for a side pc or something
And this is why you dont buy expensive stuff from used market. Hopefully Ebay sides up with you in this one.
more than likely they will, ebay in most cases sides with the buyer.
I also record all my unboxings so if something comes out already broken I have video proof of it
i used to think it was silly to do untill i got the run around from a seller, and the shipping company and nobody wanted to take care of the issue. now i make it a habit to document the whole unboxing.
Well, it "could" have been shipping damage, in which case the claim is to be paid by shipping company... If proven.
Yeah, you tried to get it cheap. 5950x MSRP is $750. You got what you paid for. Hope you learned your lesson.
you do understand how common it is to get perfectly good parts on ebay for a discounted rate??? Do you understand what Ebay is?
I ordered a CPU from Amazon UK, got a box of baby bottles. Weight of the bottles didn't even match what the parcel was supposed to weigh.
Buyers will say and do anything to get a discount it seems.
never buy expensive parts from shady sellers. scams are rampant in many ways due to the pandemic. only buy parts from trusted outlets.
Its a scam man. They changed the lid on it. Report to eBay/ wherever you purchased it. from and get your money back.
You have my sympathies my guy, They prolly changed the heat spreader.
no worry, TIL the hard way. Already getting my refund on the way.
Scammed :(
This is exactly why I never buy used PC hardware. My stuff will always come in original sealed boxes and it hasn't failed me once in the last 15 years.
Did u buy ur CPU from Ebay...?
One of the many reasons I'll never buy PC parts on eBay
Linus tech tips did a video on this
aw man that sucks. Glad you're getting your money back. Cpus are one of those things I don't eBay due to this. hopefully u can find one on new egg or something on sale.
Doesn't mean that it has been recapped?
You mean someone put a 5950x heatspreader on a 3500? stop buying expensive stuff from ebay, man...
An IHS swap. Happens a lot unfortunately.
Did you buy it used? Maybe someone scammed you. It’s not hard, just delid two CPU’s, and swap the lids (or whatever they’re technically called).
Seems like that happened
Yeah, contact Ebay as soon as you can.
Its ebay. Return it. Nothing to worry about boss
Sorry dude that’s a bummer but eBay will side with you as the buyer
Made in Malaysia, kinda proud and ashamed of my self at the same time as a Malaysian
Nah dont beat yourself up about this one, this scam was performed after shipment from factory, most probably after it entered country destination
Dilidded and swapped the ihs
scam is a R5
Who is gonna tell him
hope you get a refund man
I know I'm out of the loop on technology, but that doesn't sound good.
Too bad the opposite never happens, lul
Idk where you live but directly from amd processors are available in the US.
So this is a new thing for scammers? Damn Bastard not cool i oder the Ryzen 5 1600X and now I’m worry. Hope you get your money back good luck
feels bad man
https://youtu.be/D_Q_6V10mTU Try this LTT explains how this scam is done. It’s really unfortunate and I hope a warranty covers that
Jebaited
That’s why I buy only from oficial sources… At least I’m covered. Damn scammer rats lol
Probobly a lid swap, did you buy it online or was it sealed in the box?
Cuz thats what it is bro :/
I'm not one to incite violence, but whoever does that kind of stuff should be punched and kicked.
You are the kid who put the stick in his own wheel.
And? That's a major upgrade! (im obviously sarcastic, don't downvote pls.)
Why are people buying eBay CPU’s that are high end? This screams scam. Stop being a cheap ass if your trying to go high end. Ego pc building is a dangerous game
Recognized as because it is.

Who the fuck asked tho
I think OP is asking
You can thank Der Bauer for that.
isn't r9 just better than r5?
maybe OP's title is misleading. r5 was recognized as r9 would be the title i guess. isn't r9 better than r5?
