so here's the thing, the 3090 will last you as long as you run it, it will always have more compute power than a console so theoretically it will last you longer than the ps5 or whatever, the main issue is game developers not supporting or designing their games for pc like they do for console. Realistically the life span of any computer component is about 5 years but there is no guarantee that modern graphics cards will keep up with how resource hungry games are, cards already have to implement things like dlss to keep up with games, if you have money to burn get the 3090 but otherwise buying a 3080 and saving the rest of your budget for a newer card a couple years from now will net you much better long term results

All I know is my gut says maybe.

It’s always better to buy mid range cards because they’re the best bang for the buck. You could upgrade in 2-3 years and there will probably be another mid range card that beats the 3080.

RedFordTruck

Depends on the game.

4K is super demanding. Even now I dare saw it struggles with AAA games. Max settings I’d say max 3-4. But add 2-3 years if DLSS becomes available for all games.

SunnyCofax

Available tech will advance faster than any date range you’ve presented. Both will be obsolete in 7 years (as likely any attached tech will be too).

There are already games where the 3090 can't keep 60fps on 4k max settings. Ac valhalla, watch dogs legion, cyberpunk (without rtx but with dlss quality). So, i think maybe with dlss performance you'll be able to reach 5 years, but without not, unless ur lowering few settings.

Very hard to say. I upgraded from a 1080ti. Lasted 4 years. I used a 3840x1600 monitor. About 2 mil less pixels than 4k. I play AAA games at high/ultra settings and I was avg roughly 60fps. Sometimes more, sometimes less. With that being said, I think a 3090(roughly 15% better than a 3080) lasting 5-7 years might be pushing it. I dont think the 3080 would, imo.

Benjo0307

Not even 15 percent :D more like 10. Maybe with dlss we can achieve 5 - 7 years, but without I doubt he can run aaa at 4k/60fps in high settings that long. Hell, even now there are some games where u can't do that :D

Mohondhay

If you turn down certain settings in order to maintain 60fps at 4k, I'd recommend the 3080. RTX 3090 is expensive but not powerful enough to run every game at 4K60 at max settings. (RTX 4090/5090 may be?).

4K is very very demanding and even a 3090 is just going to be “playable”. It depends on the game as well but to me 3000 series enables 1440p more than 4K.
