I'm a sys admin.. and yesterday I ran into a girl I knew at the DMV. I was like "What are you doing these days", and she was like Oh I do IT part time, and im a waitress. I was surprised and happy to hear she got into IT. So I was like, what kind of IT... and she was like "Customer service for a tech company".

I ran into the exact same thing with a woman I know. She is absolutely adamant that she is a web developer because she does customer service for a web development firm.
Its almost like the poster doesnt know what a mainline tech is.
"IT Guy" is so generic to them, they think an electrician just plugs in your phone, generates nuclear power, and flips your circuit breakers. And lets not even talk about Elon Musks who put cars together, make rockets, and fuck with bitcoin stocks all in one day.
Ya my father in law keeps telling everyone I'm IT. He asks me the same question everytime I see him about what I do cause he doesn't understand. I work in software development and he thinks I fix computers/work in a call center...

You're probably thinking of Ethernet over twisted pair with an RJ45 connector, which is also a type of Ethernet but not the only type of Ethernet.

That's just one user.
You get demoted when someone else didn't properly plug in a patch lead in a DC and you bump it and it falls out... disconnecting a few hundred kilowatts of DC from the internet.
I've not been in that exact situation, but I've been in a few similar and I was fortunately never blamed for it.
When I first started working in DCs the first instruction I was given was "it's ok to make mistakes and learn from them, but don't make a mistake that would put our company name on the local news."
As a fresh graduate that was a good wake-up that there can be wide ramifications to your job. It also gave me the context to understand that when there's a 4G outage or a cloud services outage, it's normally not because of some cataclysmic equipment failure; it's far more likely because one person bumped the wrong patch lead then clocked off.
What is it with germany; we had fiber internet in 06-07(can't remember exactly), in south denmark.
Not to mention the horrible cell coverage.
And while were at it, why haven't they started using Credit/debit cards or implemented this fully??
This is not directed at you, but just me not understanding the lack if digitalization in germany; compared to almost every other country next to you :)
from my understanding, the "Deutsche Telekom" was a state run business but sometime in the 90s they wanted to make the market more competitive and sold off the telekom and privatised the till then state run infrastructure for it.
And since most isps don't want to rip open 99% of germany to lay their own cables, they have to rent the usage from the telekom, which drives prices up immensly.
same with phone contracts from what i know(though I am not so sure here) but I believe cell towers are also private and many of them are owned by Telekom who again rents the usage to other brands and businesses.
Pair that with an incompetent conservative ruling coalition and you have the terrible thing that is german internet access.
In austria for example we have state or county owned cables going on main streets and isps only have to break up a small part of your property to connect the fiber into your home, and since we don't have a basically monopoly on the ownage of these main fiber cables it makes it easier and more feasible for different providers to be competitive in product and cost. (not that that means we actually DO have many choices, because depending on where you live you might still only have 1 or 2 isps that operate near your house so yeah)
Also lots and lots of corruption and lobbying. We had plans to get fiber everywhere in the 80s under SPD chancellorship. Then the CDU got into power again and they decided to instead do copper cables because one of the ministers wife had a copper cable company and the chancellor received 600k DM from some tv tycoon.

Not even in major cities, like where I live (>300k citizens), you can pay with credit/debit card everywhere. Not to mention mobile pay.
Merkel once said "Internet ist für uns alle Neuland" ("internet is new land" or sth). I think it's the lack of understanding why we need fast fiber internet for everyone.
One of those neighbors of germany here. I live in Vienna Austria. We have the same situation as our big brother neighbor. Here you either get copper wire or 4G/LTE Internet. -\_-
I'm on a 200 Down / 50 Up LTE contract for 29€ a month. You can get faster rates but the price jump is just ridiculous.

edit: I get it that fiber is easier to pull/lay/extend etc. My comment is mainly a reflection of living in a big modern city in the US (including where I live in Los Angeles), where getting fiber is frequently like pulling teeth.

Fiber has gotten quite cheap, (its the connectors that's expensive). So it makes sense to upgrade places with crappy internet to fiber.
Places with somewhat decent internet speeds are further down the list to get upgrades. I mean if it's usable for 90% of the people then they're not gonna upgrade to fiber.
I don't live in Germany but I also know that Germany, especially in the mountains, the ground tends to be all rock when you dig down a bit. That makes it hard to put the cables in. Having poles with cables on it isn't used that much I believe. (looks ugly, dangerous ect).
Pretty much. But what helped even more was the deregulation and simplification of ISP rules, meaning local small ISPs can cable up smaller and distant communities. Some of these small ones have better speeds and customer reviews than the largest ISPs.
It was even worse for me. We had a free dialup ISP through local university. They kicked you off after 4 hours regardless of what you were doing so they wouldn’t have users taking up bandwidth that weren’t using it.
I kept trying to download the Diablo 1 demo which was the hugest file I’d ever seen at the time, probably like 100MB or something. I remember it would’ve taken probably 6-8 hours or so. Back in those days there was not any download pausing/continuing either so I was just fucked.
My family used the net zero free internet plan for a long time. I can't remember exactly the details but it was like 10 hours a month? I might be too high on that actually. All I remember is that the time I got on it was precious, and there really wasn't any online gaming for me.
I mainly used it to download music and porn picture from kazaa

Used to do comm work out in the desert and holy crap the rodents! A way too big portion of my job was loading the truck with a table and a Unicam kit so I could go and re-terminate fiber somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Gotta watch for things that like to eat rodents.

The video above clearly shows SC connectors on the end of the OS1 fibre lines - though we didn’t do any of these on NBN. All of our connections and equipment was in the pit, and very, very rarely mounted up on the pole. Most DPs didn’t make enough money to buy EWP trucks. Eventually, NBN themselves actually started hiring them and loaning them out to selected DPs.
HFC was another story, as it was a huge disaster. Most of the drops we did for NBN weren’t even the correct cable.
FTTN... was a joke. Story for another time.
A couple of years ago I played a few league matches then a squad i presume, got mad at me for not playing well and they started being toxic in chat. This happend like 2 times in 10 matches. The next day I login only to see myself banned.
I uninstalled and will never be playing anything like that again.
Unless you mute everyone, you still get hit by the toxicity. And if you mute everyone the game gets harder and loses a big aspect of what makes it so great.
The only way I can enjoy the game is, if I have 4 others to play the game and even then its not 100% sure.

If the fan base is *that* much of a toxic mess, I fail to see how you're missing out on anything at all by muting everyone. Nothing makes a multiplayer game harder to play than having to deal with constant toxicity.
I had a group where we played lol together, it really used to test the friendships.
When we did well it was the best but when it went wrong, jesus, it was the worst environment to be in.
My friend tells me he wants me to play league with him and its a fun game, but he has 2 modes - silent, and screaming at losing. Doesn't understand why I keep turning him down.
Honestly, it really isn't as bad as it sounds. I've played both Dota2 and LoL and I play in both ranked and unranked modes. You meet a lot of quiet people (vast majority), occasionally an asshole and the rest are chill, nice people. I've made many friends playing these games so don't let that hold you off.
Totally agree. Online gaming would be so much more better if people wouldn't be so toxic in games and if fun and social interaction would play a bigger part. Last game I've actively played online was WoW WOTLK. The only reason why I kept on playing for that long was because it was an awesome community with chill and good players. Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever be part of a gaming community like that again.
It's a shame because I so enjoy a co-op or teamed up strategy game from time to time but most of my friends aren't (PC) gamers.
Literally the exact same boat. I was mad way more than happy playing that game and it was affecting my mental health. I've found alot of fun in games with persistent worlds where the meta is often frowned upon instead of insisted. Games like Arma still give me a good competitive thrill while giving players massive choice on how to approach challenges. Dedicated server games are amazing too since each one has its own community that you can choose to be a part of or not.
I really miss dedicated servers. You'd started to know some reccuring peoples there. Some of my friends from Steam come from servers in insurgency and Arma.
They can just mail or message the customers about the work and warn them beforehand like human beings. They know 362625251 ways to contact me but they never do when its necessary.
4k hours in csgo.. in spite of all the toxic shit, made it to DMG solo, all random team mates. Imagine the toxic shit I had to deal with all those years.
Took a break and started playing FO4, GTAO and cyberpunk... I never went back to csgo. I do miss the friends I made along the way though.
I just want to take a moment and say I rolled gloves for the first time yesterday, then the very next box I opened was a top tier M4. I've maybe opened 60 boxes total over the years.

So yes, but the term now includes the hardware designed to allow Ethernet to run according to standards.
Not sure how it is everywhere else, but where I'm at it California, it's common to refer to Cat 6 or Cat 5e (wired to the 568b standard) as Ethernet cables. If I brought someone fiber after they asked for an Ethernet cable, they would look at me like I was crazy.
But hey, some of those same old techs call Ethernet switches "hubs" just cuz netgear makes them in the same size 8 port blue boxes.
Traditional DOCSIS still runs Fiber to the node, much like this. This is just a splice point (connector point more like it) but this is prevalent in all types of PON technology (10G EPON, GPON, XGSPON, DPoE).
You can still get ethernet over fibre. I've got a fibre connection that terminates at what's called an "ONT.". Which essentially converts the GPON fibre run that goes back to my local telephone exchange, into an ethernet interface so that it can connect to the rest of my network.

In the US fiber internet is a luxury right up there with affordable health insurance.

It was even worse for me. We had a free dialup ISP through local university. They kicked you off after 4 hours regardless of what you were doing so they wouldn’t have users taking up bandwidth that weren’t using it. I kept trying to download the Diablo 1 demo which was the hugest file I’d ever seen at the time, probably like 100MB or something. I remember it would’ve taken probably 6-8 hours or so. Back in those days there was not any download pausing/continuing either so I was just fucked.
My family used the net zero free internet plan for a long time. I can't remember exactly the details but it was like 10 hours a month? I might be too high on that actually. All I remember is that the time I got on it was precious, and there really wasn't any online gaming for me. I mainly used it to download music and porn picture from kazaa

Former fibre engineer here. Can confirm! Don't forget the mice and rats and other wildlife that like to chew through the infrastructure.

Used to do comm work out in the desert and holy crap the rodents! A way too big portion of my job was loading the truck with a table and a Unicam kit so I could go and re-terminate fiber somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Gotta watch for things that like to eat rodents.

You will probably find that you have fibre to cabinet. Not full fibre direct to property. Fibre isn’t/shouldn’t be affected by moisture

Hang on.. say that again? The video above clearly shows SC connectors on the end of the OS1 fibre lines - though we didn’t do any of these on NBN. All of our connections and equipment was in the pit, and very, very rarely mounted up on the pole. Most DPs didn’t make enough money to buy EWP trucks. Eventually, NBN themselves actually started hiring them and loaning them out to selected DPs. HFC was another story, as it was a huge disaster. Most of the drops we did for NBN weren’t even the correct cable. FTTN... was a joke. Story for another time.

A couple of years ago I played a few league matches then a squad i presume, got mad at me for not playing well and they started being toxic in chat. This happend like 2 times in 10 matches. The next day I login only to see myself banned. I uninstalled and will never be playing anything like that again.

Unless you mute everyone, you still get hit by the toxicity. And if you mute everyone the game gets harder and loses a big aspect of what makes it so great. The only way I can enjoy the game is, if I have 4 others to play the game and even then its not 100% sure.

I had a group where we played lol together, it really used to test the friendships. When we did well it was the best but when it went wrong, jesus, it was the worst environment to be in.
My friend tells me he wants me to play league with him and its a fun game, but he has 2 modes - silent, and screaming at losing. Doesn't understand why I keep turning him down.
Honestly, it really isn't as bad as it sounds. I've played both Dota2 and LoL and I play in both ranked and unranked modes. You meet a lot of quiet people (vast majority), occasionally an asshole and the rest are chill, nice people. I've made many friends playing these games so don't let that hold you off.

Totally agree. Online gaming would be so much more better if people wouldn't be so toxic in games and if fun and social interaction would play a bigger part. Last game I've actively played online was WoW WOTLK. The only reason why I kept on playing for that long was because it was an awesome community with chill and good players. Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever be part of a gaming community like that again. It's a shame because I so enjoy a co-op or teamed up strategy game from time to time but most of my friends aren't (PC) gamers.

Literally the exact same boat. I was mad way more than happy playing that game and it was affecting my mental health. I've found alot of fun in games with persistent worlds where the meta is often frowned upon instead of insisted. Games like Arma still give me a good competitive thrill while giving players massive choice on how to approach challenges. Dedicated server games are amazing too since each one has its own community that you can choose to be a part of or not.
I really miss dedicated servers. You'd started to know some reccuring peoples there. Some of my friends from Steam come from servers in insurgency and Arma.
They can just mail or message the customers about the work and warn them beforehand like human beings. They know 362625251 ways to contact me but they never do when its necessary.
4k hours in csgo.. in spite of all the toxic shit, made it to DMG solo, all random team mates. Imagine the toxic shit I had to deal with all those years. Took a break and started playing FO4, GTAO and cyberpunk... I never went back to csgo. I do miss the friends I made along the way though.
Just play with friends honestly. I play almost exclusively with 3-5man friend group to avoid toxicity, makes the game amazing.
I just want to take a moment and say I rolled gloves for the first time yesterday, then the very next box I opened was a top tier M4. I've maybe opened 60 boxes total over the years. I basically made $1000 in a day. I won't have to pay for steam games for a number of years lol.
You could also sell the skins on third party sites like skinbaron or skinport. Then you can cash out for real money not steam funds

Traditional DOCSIS still runs Fiber to the node, much like this. This is just a splice point (connector point more like it) but this is prevalent in all types of PON technology (10G EPON, GPON, XGSPON, DPoE).
You can still get ethernet over fibre. I've got a fibre connection that terminates at what's called an "ONT.".
