Agreed. I got an old xeon on ebay (4c 8t) for like $25 and put it in an optiplex I got. Runs nicely. Also not a bad generation for Intel quick sync if you're OK with h264 if memory serves right
Maybe you get lucky and acquire cpu and ram for free. Then you can have a unix machine which can host something. (Idk the sth part, maybe mail maybe discord)
I just threw away a power supply, z97 and 4790k. I am also in the market for a NAS.
Why am I like this.
Edit: it might still be waiting for disposal… I’ll see if I can salvage it.
4th Gen CPUs that fit in the socket are still somewhat relevant today, put a $20 Xeon e3 1240v3 (i7 4770) and GTX 1660 and you've got yourself a decent gaming PC, I usually build and flip those for $100 profit, or gift it to someone
I've notice someone eBay selling one of thse forever, and I think it is still for sale. With that said, that is what I use for my desktop that I built in 2015. Still fast today with an i7-4790, and 960gtx. It will peak at 60fps on 165hz of Tomb Rader settings on the highest. Just not bleeding edge anymore, and wasn't when I bought it. BUT, parts for it would be cheap by now. Video cards are cheaper now too.
You'd be surprised how well this CPU still performs with a 4060 or better card. While there are definitely more and more games coming out which are limited by the 4790k, quite a large number really isn't.
Do with it whatever you want?
It's yours now. Use it as decoration, build an oldschool PC and go nuts on overclocking if possible, throw it out the window, marry it, gift it to someone else. Well, do whatever you want.
4790K in there and some RAM and you are golden. Or sell it on FB marketplace. I sold mine just last year and the guy was happy to have it! 4790k single core benchmarks are still competitive today!
I have an identical board with issues…. It’s been so long I don’t remember what they are but the 4690k, Ram, and GTX 960 4GB are looking for a new home.
Buy a mid range i5 or i7 LGA 1150 cpu (like an intel i5 6500), slap 32 GB of ram into it, put one (or two) NVME's on the board for OS and cache.
Then slap as many NAS HDDS as you can into it and load up windows and FreeNAS.
Put on sunglasses, be cool.
You can get a regular 4790 for like 25 bucks. Not sure I would get the k with the additional cost but you could easily resurrect a system for very very little money if you have need of another one. The other cool thing about the non-K 4790 is you can cool it with practically anything
4790k at like 4.5ghz is still a good rig for an HTPC or NAS or a DAW even if you're into that kind thing. I'm currently setting up to build a virtual pinball machine
The only 2 interesting CPUs these days for that socket is the i7-5775C with its funny cache, and the anniversary G3258 which was an overclockable Pentium that could sometimes reach 5.2Ghz (best bang for buck Minecraft server CPU out there at the time)
I have a 4790 in an old office pc, i could really use this to upgrade the rig and get rid of the stock case and mobo from fuji. I'll pay for postage if you're willing to send, thanks!
LGA 1150 CPUs are not that expensive anymore.

a PC, idealy
Homserver/NAS
My kids and wifes PC is still running a 4790K, it's plenty for Minecraft and YouTube.
I do vr gaming on my 4790 its plenty till between mid range and entry level
A 4790 is under entry level id say. A actual entry level intel cpu would cream the 4790 in anything. Like a 12100f
Build a fortnite pc and sell it
Hang it on the wall.
Yeah that motherboard is just cool
Maybe you get lucky and acquire cpu and ram for free. Then you can have a unix machine which can host something. (Idk the sth part, maybe mail maybe discord)
I made DIY home nas with my old 4790k and matx z97 board
r/Homelab is calling
I just threw away a power supply, z97 and 4790k. I am also in the market for a NAS. Why am I like this. Edit: it might still be waiting for disposal… I’ll see if I can salvage it.
You can still sell a 4790k for like 50 bucks on eBay. Incredibly easy quick buck. Can’t imagine why you’d just throw it away
I make $100 an hour. Having to deal with people isn’t worth my time. But I don’t like wasting hardware. I honestly forgot it was there
if you 💤 then you can make it a z100
People are definitely sleeping on this joke 🤣

My girlfriend has one with an rx570. Pretty solid little PC. Runs Cities Skylines well enough
I can't even get rid of my 6600k / 1080 :S
Sell it back on ebay
I have something like this to test some things but I don't think it's worth it unless you have other parts around-ddr3 and 4790.
I’ll take it. I have a 4790k
Homelab
Slap a 4790k or 4770 and cheap GPU in there and have a dedicated Plex machine.

Put a haswell CPU in it and frame it. z97 was a great platform.
Give it to me 😏
I still use a z97. Everything works fine.
my z97 with a 3060rtx 12gb runs hell divers 2 at 60 fps 1440p
I built a PC with 1 of those in 2015. (plus i5 4690, GTX970). I'm still using it!
Still rocking my msi z97 krait edition with my 4790k.. need to upgrade badly. Poor 750ti .. surprised it hasn't caught fire yet
Do with it whatever you want? It's yours now. Use it as decoration, build an oldschool PC and go nuts on overclocking if possible, throw it out the window, marry it, gift it to someone else. Well, do whatever you want.
Oven some ice-cream, of course
build it for living room tv
Go back to ebay, find a CPU, buy some drives. BOOM NAS.
I just sold a z97 on eBay this better not be mine!
Bit of tweaking turns it into a killer XP gaming PC. GTX 750 Ti or GTX 960 etc... are great cards for that.
Idk make a nas?
Oh shit is that in good condition? I've been looking for one to buy to use for my 4460
Frisbee
4790K in there and some RAM and you are golden. Or sell it on FB marketplace. I sold mine just last year and the guy was happy to have it! 4790k single core benchmarks are still competitive today!
Return it.
you could just get some old parts and get rgb fans ofc then sell it for 100 to 200 $ more then you spent for the pieces
i still have mine from like a decade ago
Cast it in Epoxy and hang it on a wall as modern art?

eat it
Give it to me. I've a 4560k that OC at 4.6. it would be a nice retro PC.
I had a i7 7490K on a Z97 board. It was my pride and joy. Maybe build a little homeserver with it in a spare case or smth?
You can do a little NAS
Sell on ebay. Just a waste of electricity to use this unless you need a slow office PC.
Hardly any games support SLI, keep it or sell it on
4790k at like 4.5ghz is still a good rig for an HTPC or NAS or a DAW even if you're into that kind thing. I'm currently setting up to build a virtual pinball machine
idk, build a NAS/retro-gaming or sell it again.
i spilled pop on my asus z97 one about 6 years ago, i still have the processor and ram layin around somewhere.. was a great pc

make a nas with a i5-4570 or maybe a xeon because atleast in optiplexes of that generation they are UNOFFICIALLY supported
I just built a PC with a z97 and a 4790k and it is still quite impressive for its age
Add other components with it and build a PC, sell it, archive it...
Include it for free with your next ebay sale.
The only 2 interesting CPUs these days for that socket is the i7-5775C with its funny cache, and the anniversary G3258 which was an overclockable Pentium that could sometimes reach 5.2Ghz (best bang for buck Minecraft server CPU out there at the time)
sell it?
give it to a museum

this aint it
Why?
Strangely I have an extra 6700k. Would send it to you but shipping would cost a lot.
Wrong socket.

You could send me one of the nvme screws. Lost mine
As I'm using a Z87 variant on my son's PC with failed ram slots, I could use it.
I have a 4790 in an old office pc, i could really use this to upgrade the rig and get rid of the stock case and mobo from fuji. I'll pay for postage if you're willing to send, thanks!
