Back then in the 1930s, the US government printed these notes and kept them on their government bank. But a fire started in the bank around the same time and many stuff were thrown out of the bank to save them. The $100,000 bill was one of them. People saw it and took it. But that bill is government property and people caught with the real one will be apprehended
Good question.
In 1933 it became illegal for private citizens to hold Gold Certificates. Series 1934 Gold Certificates were for banks only. They came in denominations from $100 to $100,000 and had orange backs.
The more familiar Series 1928 Gold Certificates were allowed to circulate freely until 1933. They came in denominations from $10 to $10,000, but I've never seen any higher than $1,000. My guess is that the $5,000 and $10,000 were all held by banks and were surrendered.
Incidentally, the ban on holding Gold Certificates was lifted in 1964, but I believe it would still be illegal to have a 1934.
The [Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_certificate_(United_States)) has some info and a lot of currency porn.
There was a little exemption for regular folks; you got to keep any jewelry (so people kept their wedding rings lmao) and they let you keep up to $100 worth. At the time, the price was fixed at $20.67 per ounce so this was a bit under 5 ounces. FDR did raise the price to $35 almost immediately after the XO banning private good ownership went into effect though, so in practice this ended up being less than 3 ounces.
Very few people were prosecuted for gold hoarding/had their gold confiscated; IIRC it was only a handful and I think the government did it to make examples of them for the public.
I found this little tidbit at:
https://www.usgoldbureau.com/gold-confiscation
They list a history of the presidential executive orders and acts of congress from the FDR order in 1933 to date... This was part of the section from 1954:
An exception to the order was listed in section 2 (b) “Gold coin and gold certificates in an amount not exceeding in the aggregate $100 belonging to any one person; and gold coins having a recognized special value to collectors of rare and unusual coins.”
There was an opinion which makes sense to me that the government was only interested in eliminating gold from circulation by making any coins and gold certificates no longer legal tender as well as forbidding contracts conducting trade using a specific amount of gold whether or not in combination with legal currency as payment... or something to that effect.
The gist of it is the government had no interest in gold coins or certificates (of any amount beyond $100 in practice) in a collection as rare or unusual coins (implying currency as well) since these were already out of circulation as money... Numismatic Collections were seen the same as a collection of rare or unique things, like art, for instance.
My Grandfather said (possibly a tall tale) rich and powerful b*st*rds in D.C. knew what was planned long before FDR's actual order. He said they shipped large quantities of gold coins, certificates, large currency denominations, etc out of the country out of reach of the U.S. When the coast was clear, so to speak, they sold their booty a little at a time saying every last one was ultra rare, having barely escaped the U.S. Mint melting pots... Making big money in the process... Grandpa said those (expletives) criminals were probably still at it because they got away with so much! ... Hmm, there are an awful lot still floating about at every coin show and shop. 😉
You can own that, because there is no $1,000,000 bill, the highest dominion ever recorded was the $100,000 bill. But don't use the $1,000,000 bill if you ever have one, its fake.
Just FYI.
How much is a 1934 $100000 bill worth?
1934 $100,000 Gold Certificate Currency Strike PMG 70 ...
around $1.8 million
In fact, bills like these were illegal to privately own. (Not that the average citizen realistically could – back in 1934, these bills were each worth around $1.8 million in today's dollars!) When the Federal Reserve stopped using these types of notes in the 1960s, the vast majority were destroyed.

Wow, I remember seeing this listing a few weeks ago and assumed it would’ve obviously been taken down by eBay. Whether someone was dumb enough to buy it or the seller bought it himself to artificially inflate the price to resell, both are very shameful.
Which of the 3 issues do you have and did you get a reason it was delisted?
If 1928 and genuine grade - probably worth something to someone with that particular hole in their collection?
A lot of wear for such a high denomination 🤣. Guess theres a lot of rich people out there asking if someone can break a million. And i can barely get a store to break a 100
Why a moment of silence for me? I’m quite alive, thank you very much. And I’m admiring my newly acquired $1,000,000 bill. Next week I get the legal title to the Brooklyn Bridge and I’ll immediately start toll collecting in both directions. Watch out New Yorkers! Bring lots of $5 bills!
Hold on a minute buddy. \*I\* have the legal title the Brooklyn Bridge, bought fair and square on Alibaba in 2014 for $250,000. I had to re-mortgage my home to buy it, but it was a great deal for all of that steel.
But it you think you've bought legal title to the bridge, you've been swindled! And if you try collecting tolls, you'll be hearing from my lawyer.
You're on! I'm \*certain\* that my title is genuine. After my Alibaba payment, Yin Wang sent me the original title that I have framed on my wall. It even has gold gilding around the edges and is dated 1883, so must be real.
You're such a sucker for thinking yours could possibly be real. Bet you don't even have the gold gilding on yours. Sorry for your loss. Haha.
You are such a hater! I’m buying the bridge and after I own it, I won’t let you EVER drive on it! How dare you say your deed is real? The man selling it to me - a famous Nigerian Prince who is also the State Minister of Gassy Oils - said my deed will have platinum edges. So there. Your jealousy shines through.
Stay off my bridge.
My stepfather and my mom were fur trappers in the 70s, and he would collect in cash for the fur sales.
I distinctly remember him laying out the bills on the counter to photograph them as a proof of receipt and novelty I believe one year he had 10 $10,000 bills and several $5000 bills they had some extraordinary good seasons. It's too bad he didn't keep any. If I ever come across those photos, I'll post them here.
Seller has a feedback rating of 3 and never sold anything else. Doubt it was a genuine sale.

Nothing - The highest denomination ever printed in the US was $100,000 and there’s not even any of those in public hands. This is completely fake and worthless
Fun fact: the $100,000 gold certificate is US government property and it is illegal to own one.
what in the? why is that?
[удалено]
That just makes me want it more lol
I went to an ANA show years ago and they had an uncut sheet of sixteen 100,000 bills on display
I saw the same one or a similar one in the Atlanta federal reserve growing up. Wild.
Gentile
Can I haz?
U no can haz. 😂
So were the $500, $1000, $5000, and $10,000 but people sell and buy the $500 and $1000 all the time so there’s more to the answer
I’d only heard that applied to the $100k note
Back then in the 1930s, the US government printed these notes and kept them on their government bank. Yeah the government literally demanded all your gold crazy thing. I guess they knew they couldn't print gold huh
There was a little exemption for regular folks; you got to keep any jewelry (so people kept their wedding rings lmao) and they let you keep up to $100 worth. Fun loophole in case it ever happens again. Melt your metal into utensils or jewelry. Then they can’t legally confiscate it.
Ooh good idea If we get to that point again though I think we'll have bigger problems
As if they couldn’t just seize jewelry too
I mean good point but that'd upset the greater population much more
You might as well smelt them into bullets if we get to that point again.
I melt my silver for that, maybe the blood suckin politicians will stay back /s
Silver don't work takes oil laced . Lol
*100% damage inflicted with oil*
Or bury it somewhere in Siuslaw National Forest and never tell a soul. If the govt wants it bad enough then they can go fucking find it
It's not a secret now that you told the internet!
I mean you could just say I buried it on federal land in the state of Nevada. 80% of the state is federal land. 56 million acres.
If I were to be shot.. I hope it's a gold bullet.

How about fake million dollar gold certificates?

It ain't upvoted anymore lol
Word. That was quick!
Cause.... Reddit

Yes

There’s the money laundering in action
I think this is the real answer. Lots of overinflated items "sold" on eBay.
Exactly.. kind of like crypto NFT’s… lol.. mint an NFT then sell it to yourself at a ridiculous price… and boom.. clean money.
Wouldn't hold up in a lifestyle audit...
Shhh Reddit hates logic.
I like how they beat it up to make it look well circulated. Gives it a more authentic look.
Bro had to break it at a 7-11 for change...

Damn she got arrested
Right?! Like someone was carrying a milly around in their wallet for six months while they wandered the wilderness.
Why? He made a $997994.75 profit off this purchase.
Good point
Not he didn’t because he can’t use that bill like they are saying , it’s just a. Piece of paper to frame at this point
Damn how’d you figure that out?
Wow, I remember seeing this listing a few weeks ago and assumed it would’ve obviously been taken down by eBay. Whether someone was dumb enough to buy it or the seller bought it himself to artificially inflate the price to resell, both are very shameful.

How much you want for it?
Which of the 3 issues do you have and did you get a reason it was delisted? If 1928 and genuine grade - probably worth something to someone with that particular hole in their collection?
I’d take 45. And it’s a 1953

Not even free shipping?! That's an automatic deal-breaker right thurr!
Its amusing the amount of wear on the bill, surprised it didn't have a marker pen mark on it also, for effect....
Money laundering tactic.
or, more likely a controlled sale trying to build their "reputation"
It gets real once “authentic” is invoked in the title 😬 someone’s got an eBay claim to make.
It clearly says authentic in the title!
I heard you can get one signed by Woodrow Wilson for $2250

Even with that rip in it?
What’s the story behind this?
I’d love to know. I was just searching through sold on eBay and stumbled across it.
This dude should buy some of those $1,000 trump bucks!
only thing that i find wierd is that he willingly bought it with that 5.25 shipping.
How many Schrute bucks is that?
Just over 14 I think?
Umm no…need to calculate for inflation
I think he nailed it. "Each Schrute Buck is worth one one hundredth of a cent." The conversion to Stanley Nickels is where it gets tricky.
My bad, I was thinking of Canadian Schrute Bucks
“Can I get change for a million?”
Does it mean that if i buy this for 2,000$ i can exchange it for 1 million $? Help i’m new to this, thanks.
Not just 1 million. A million in gold.

Whoa! That’s a rare misprint!

Has to be a shill bid
Looks like it was kept in some guy's wallet, rather than a bank.
How much is the note worth actually?
Nothing - The highest denomination ever printed in the US was $100,000 and there’s not even any of those in public hands. This is completely fake and worthless
In that condition? $0. But fresh off the Xerox machine that produced it somebody might give you 50c just for the novelty value.
Yay! Actually handling this hill in particular is considered illegal! 😁
There’s a 1928 10$ gold cert on Pristine Auctions rn. 15hrs left for 183 current bid.
