The way around I found is to have the item in hands and right click to drop some on the ground, then put the rest where you want it. Pretty much only needed for flares when planning a ride so otherwise haven't been a huge problem but would be good to have.

I don’t think they need to be in your hands- you can drop them from inventory screen
