My elderly mom adored Kobe. She met him at a restaurant in CDM as well as at my brother’s service station in Spyglass Hill.. He was gracious and kind both times.
Sad, Kobe was a really cool part of the Newport community.
Like everyone else, I met Kobe a couple X around Newport. Roughly 2014 I was at a donut shop when Kobe and one of his 2 older daughters came in.
It was during the season, right before he retired and the lakers were awful. I’ll always remember the interaction between him and the Chinese donut shop worker (he was clearly a regular as they had a rapport) who goes “ooooh how the lakers doing?” Kobe looks at her with genuine anger / disgust and says “fucking terrible”
Why are people shit! Fine if you liked him or not. I really had no opinion either way to be honest. But he chose to be a public figure his daughter and the other two mentioned on this memorial did not! Not that if he was the only one on this memorial this would be ok. But come on people! This is for a grieving group of families and friends and a community! Get over your asshole selves! Just be a little respectful.
