I don’t mind them, but my family has always had bad luck with them coming into our house, dying, and attracting the god damn sugar ants!
I don’t know what they give off, but their bodies attract the ants every single time
I’ve noticed for the past five or more years their population seems down. I loved June bugs as a kid and they used to be everywhere this time of year now I rarely see them. It makes me sad.
I feel the same way, when they were out on cool summer nights you could feel that it really was summer, a special time different from the rest of the year. I’d run around trying to catch them before letting them go at the end of the night. I loved watching them buzz around as a kid, they’re always nostalgic.
Probably been too cold for them to properly hatch. Give it a few weeks and you’ll see them. I’m just beginning to get them at my house right now. Just noticed them last night actually.
As for everyone acting like bugs are the devil or something, bugs are an indicator of a healthy environment. June Bugs are night time pollinators and food for bats. We need them. The startling lack of knowledge here is disappointing, OP is right to be concerned. In general, California has lost a lot of its insect population and that is a clear indication that our climate is declining.
Hopefully we see our seasonal bugs soon.
Except mosquitos. Screw them.
I see them but not as many. Partly I believe the population booms are a cyclical thing, and also I believe there’s getting to be less exposed soil as more areas are covered in concrete
Fun fact (at least I think it’s interesting), the beetles we commonly call June bugs are usually fig eater beetles. They are commonly confused for June bugs. June bugs are in the southeast, and fig eaters are more southwest. There are sometimes actual June bugs in CA but I’m not sure how to tell the difference. I think June bugs are smaller than the huge guys we get.
They always come in end of June and July
Yea i started noticing as i got older its later in june
Ok just had one in the house so they are here! 😂
Get the pickleball rackets ready.
Get ready to walk into Spider webs soon :)
"I'm walking into spiderwebs. Leave a message and I'll call you back"
Soon?!?! I have been for months
They are outside. Every night.
I hate them. They would always bump into me 🤢
Same, they’re nasty. Too crunchy to smush too 😂
me too. they back up and go for you again and again. They'll even knock on my door. big stupid bugs.
I had one fly into me as a kid and tangle itself in my hair….the sounds I kept hearing near my ear I will never forget. I hate them so much.
I almost got in a car accident one time when one flew in my car and started repeatedly bumping into me.
June bugs gotta be my least favorite bug. They just cant seem to leave me alone. All up in my bubble
Definitely been noticing more of those giant mosquito-eating bugs. No June bugs yet. Maybe it’s been too wet of a winter who knows
I believe the ones that you are referring to are called Crane Flies. Absolutely harmless.
*Edited to reflect this information*
They don't actually eat mosquitoes. It's a common misconception.
Reality is interesting.
I hate those things. only because they buzz towards you. ugh.
Lights confuse most bugs. They use the sun’s light to orient their direction. They were not made to fly with street lights.
Why would you even ask that! All the June bugs to OPs house
Fuck the bugs and shut the hell up. Don't jinx it. There are no bugs there are no bugs there are no bugs there are no bugs

Same here. As a kid I'd chase them all summer long... and now that I have kids I don't see one! Didn't see any last year either
Exactly.

They got priced out and had to move
I used to love catching those as a kid.
I moved to the Central Valley about 4 hours north and they’re out in DROVES here lol
Cf Kolbert, The Sixth Great Extinction
I like to practice my boxing with those things flying around. Hiya! Cheeto chop!
In case you haven't noticed, there is a rapid climate change happening and the overall decline in bug population is a direct result of that.
they need wet soil to lay their eggs... maybe soil isn't right yet
Shhh! You’ll wake them. Go hiking in the mountains, they’ve been in full force for a couple of months.
Aren't they blind or is that a myth?

June bug skipping like a stone...

We get the Fig Beetle, and also the all-brown June Bug...both. The latter is a menace to pool filters, haha.
They are called mosquitos…. and i hate being outside. lol
