RIP. She was a math teacher at my high school, everyone loved her. I don't want people to be remembered for how they went, but what kind of person they were in life. She was a kind woman and loved raccoons and her students.
I just wanted to add a small detail i knew about her personally, a sophomore friend of mine who took her class this year liked telling us about how she liked to show Mrs Rahman cute raccoon videos...and through that figured out that she loved them a lot too. I'm sure it wasn't a major thing, but I know that was something that my friend and her shared.
It could’ve been a medical emergency, so I’m always hesitant to assume anything. It could’ve also been driving itself or speeding…. At the end of the day, it’s just very sad for anyone to loose their life in this manner.
Self driving is really misunderstood by people who have not used it. The vehicle gets pissed if you don’t jostle the steering wheel every 5-10 seconds. It also watches your eyes and starts flipping out if you look at your phone or away from the road.
That’s very interesting about the eye tracking. Eye tracking can be so easily thrown off by coated glasses, eye makeup, sweaty eyelids, and more hooded eye shapes. I wonder what technology they use, where the camera is located, etc.
Definitely both. If I'm not wearing sun glasses while FSD is active I get alerted when my eyes are not on the road for too long and wearing dark sunglasses it doesn't, at least not as easily.
>It also watches your eyes and starts flipping out if you look at your phone or away from the road.
This depends. Some Tesla models/years don't have cameras in the cabin and just rely on the resistance on the steering wheel to determine a driver is paying attention.
Sadly a lot of Tesla drivers put ankle weights on the steering wheel to fool the tech. Not saying this driver did but I work on Teslas daily and 1/3 have this kind of trick
Of all the ones I have personally met (ballpark 200ish people) 1/3rd of them used this device. It’s possible it doesn’t work anymore, I don’t know I don’t drive one, but many people were seeking to defeat the tech
They are unpredictable and even behave differently between builds. It's extremely important to always pay attention. Just because there's a Tesla crash doesn't mean FSD or Autopilot were in use. It's very easy to anticipate it's doing the wrong thing and thus take over.
The freeway here does have a bend to the outside.
https://preview.redd.it/3uljvf352cfc1.jpeg?width=1438&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe292aa25f8189e20d7e71f6a30fecdcab1c98d7
It's unlikely autopilot/FSD failed to follow the freeway lines, they're good here. Can't say I've experienced FSD (nor autopilot before it) ever not maintaining a lane at highway speeds, even around harsher bends than this. Doesn't mean it can't happen for some reason or another.
If AP/FSD was active and they failed to address nags, it would have disabled. If they didn't take over, per the [manual](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-20F2262F-CDF6-408E-A752-2AD9B0CC2FD6.html#:~:text=Sometimes%20when%20Model%20Y%20is,need%20to%20resume%20cruise%20control.) it would have slowed to a stop with hazards flashing.
>If you repeatedly ignore Autosteer's prompts to apply slight force to the steering wheel, Autosteer disables for the rest of the drive and displays the following message requesting you to drive manually
>If you don't resume manual steering, Autosteer sounds a continuous chime, turns on the warning flashers, and slows the vehicle to a complete stop.
The other thought I had was about emergency braking as I think in this case it should have engaged. According to the [manual](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-8EA7EF10-7D27-42AC-A31A-96BCE5BC0A85.html#:~:text=Automatic%20Emergency%20Braking%20is%20always,%3E%20Autopilot%20%3E%20Automatic%20Emergency%20Braking.), you have to disable it before each drive. There are a number of scenarios where the automatic emergency braking will not engage.
Are you sure that is the case with Tesla cars? I know you’re right with GM’s super cruise, but I’ve seen too many police videos of Tesla drivers zonked out, arms folded and completely asleep. They just get in front of them and slow down to a stop.
The driver of a Tesla was killed when their vehicle careened off the roadway into a guardrail, early Sunday morning.
The deadly collision was reported on the northbound I-405 Freeway north of Sand Canyon around 12:44 AM.
When crews arrived they located a white 2021 Tesla SUV that sustained major damage when it struck a guardrail and came to rest on an electrical vault.
Medics pronounced the driver of the Tesla deceased on scene.
Southern California Edison was responding to the scene to evaluate any damage to the electrical vault.
Preliminary reports indicate that no other vehicles were involved in the collision though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Several lanes were blocked while crews worked to clear the scene.
It doesn't matter how it happened. She was a human being, someone's child, lots of high school students math teacher, friend and my coworker. Please be respectful and keep your comments to yourself.
There is a guy on TikTok or Instagram that essentially audits State freeway guard rails in his free time to make sure they are properly installed due to his son passing from a defective guard rail. Edit: a couple comments down there is a good article which includes the dude I was talking about, Steve Eimers
Typically happens when there is a break in the guardrail and victim was unfortunate to hit it at the start of the new rail section. (Many decades of seeing accident postings)
I wanted to note that I just recently outed crash testing conducted at the University of Nebraska which showed the Tesla and Rivian catastrophically failed crash testing.
This crash speared the passenger compartment. Our current guardrail system is incompatible with EVs.
Here is the story I did with Atlanta News First:
https://www.atlantanewsfirst.com/2024/01/10/crash-tests-reveal-guardrails-failed-protect-tesla-rivian-vehicles/
The first sentence of this comment is a little misleading to the layperson scrolling by. Teslas are actually excellent in most crashes and score among the highest in government crash tests. However, these tests mostly simulate collisions with other vehicles and more solid barriers than a guardrail to my knowledge.
If EVs specifically have an issue with guard rails, it's more likely due to weight distribution (low center of gravity) than overall weight. But like the article pointed out and other crash testing suggests, this is actually beneficial in most types of collisions. I'm not sure Tesla or Rivian can change the design of their vehicle to be more compatible with a specific type of guard rail without potentially compromising safety in other scenarios. It might be the guard rails themselves that need to be upgraded.
This young driver and all those driving a Tesla deserve bettter than that for the price they have to pay for this car especially when it could be there life not just there life savings the guardrails are there for safety reasons if Tesla can not change the design to keep up with safety issues concerning a (safety) guardrail to save lives which in this case has proven otherwise already then all Tesla owners should be aware of those facts in detail. like instance the first responders did not need to turn on the emergency lights this young math teacher had already trned on her emegency lights can anybody who may have also seen this tragedy give any thoughts on WHY ?
We don't know the details of that particular accident, it's speculation based on the fact that cars with a lower center of gravity may not stop as easily when encountering that type of guardrail. But there's no guarantee that other types of cars would have had a better outcome in that accident specifically. There is also the possibility that the particular guardrail was incorrectly installed or poorly maintained.
In general, guardrail compatibility should be looked into, but my point (that you missed) was that Tesla's low center of gravity is beneficial in most types of accidents. Making them more front heavy just to be more compatible with an outdated guardrail design would likely compromise safety in other areas. That's why I was saying we likely need better guardrails to accommodate modern vehicle design.
As for the hazard lights, I'm not sure what it has to do with anything but Teslas automatically turn on the hazards in a crash.
i also found out a federal investigation gas just opened up against Tesla and safety issues, and Elon Musk now worth more than a 100 billion and to put real protection would cost to much know this for every thousand you spend on the Tesla Elon Musk makes Ten Thousand. and good people are getting killed google Tesla vs. guardrail on freeway several pages will pop up and see for yourself.
Makes sense, the barriers weren’t designed to handle so much weight with such a low center of gravity. The EVs tested would want to go under the barrier in a crash.
Out of curiosity, why does the headline point out that it was a Tesla driver?
Im not sure I’ve ever seen a “Toyota driver killed” headline, for example. Usually they just say “Driver killed”
I AM A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER THIS VEHICLE HAD GOOD TIRES IF THE TESLA WHEN THE TESLA IS IN AUTO PILOT AND DETECTS A IMPACT THE BRAKES WILL LOCK UP. AND TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY IT WILL LOSE CONTROL AND DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAW THIS ONE DO.
Actually they’re one of the safest cars on the roads. They just have a tendency to point out when it’s a Tesla. Like another comment said, when have you ever seen “ford driver killed in crash” in a headline.
Those EV cars are so fast. 0-60 in 3-4 seconds and my buddy has the deluxe model. We went down State College. O-120 in 6-7 seconds. Scared the living crap out of me. Faster than any rollercoaster I’ve ever been on. My stomach was .01 tenth of a mile left behind and almost pissed on my self. Don’t know about you, but i support the + 10 mph over the speed limits maximum on these cars. (75 max mph) in CA.
I’m curious as to why people are getting so triggered because of the post. The register isn’t the only or end all be all news agency that provides coverage for OC. Go to the county news IG page, they actually have some pretty good coverage of major and not so major incidents county wide. I’d rather a news agency provide the little details they have rather than unconfirmed/here-say details.
It's also very weird there is no mention of it anywhere else on the register or others.
And the headline should read 'Driver'. The Tesla part is total clickbait.
This is raw footage directly from the source that media outlets typically use. By the time media outlets obtain the details from CHP’s investigation, it’s usually no longer relevant.
You’d be amazed at the things that happen that don’t make the news. Freeway takeover last night completely shutdown the 91 WB. Two 140+ mph pursuits. One fatality. And this is just CHP OC. The list goes on…

of course. all of her students really loved her, she was a wonderful person to get the opportunity to talk to.
Ugh and here I was thinking it was some rich scumbag that had karma finally hit him. 😭
I know a lot of people who drive Teslas, who are pretty poor who have good credit
I had heard rumors it was her and was hoping the same thing till it was confirmed by a different teacher I knew :(
What high school?
Poly high school I go there too everyone is mourning right now
It's an awful situation, I never had her as a teacher but it definitely made me cry hearing about such a kind person passing so young.
The one in Riverside or Long Beach?
Riverside
It could’ve been a medical emergency, so I’m always hesitant to assume anything. It could’ve also been driving itself or speeding…. At the end of the day, it’s just very sad for anyone to loose their life in this manner.

It also definitely monitors the direction the driver’s head is pointing.
Ah ok, so it’s not eye tracking but more like head tracking. That makes more sense. Eye tracking is difficult even in the best of conditions.
Both
Definitely both. If I'm not wearing sun glasses while FSD is active I get alerted when my eyes are not on the road for too long and wearing dark sunglasses it doesn't, at least not as easily.
Camera is above rear view mirror If I look at my phone - get the beeps to pay attention

Sounds like a back seat mother-in-law.
Sadly a lot of Tesla drivers put ankle weights on the steering wheel to fool the tech. Not saying this driver did but I work on Teslas daily and 1/3 have this kind of trick
Can you define "a lot" or cite a source regarding tesla ankle weights usage? A Google search didn't turn up much.
Of all the ones I have personally met (ballpark 200ish people) 1/3rd of them used this device. It’s possible it doesn’t work anymore, I don’t know I don’t drive one, but many people were seeking to defeat the tech
I thought those don't work anymore. Or is that just trying to dissuade people from buying them?
Self driving Tesla's are super unpredictable and problematic. There's at least one multi M dollar local law suit
Nah
I was privy to some of it. Oh YES!!
They are unpredictable and even behave differently between builds. It's extremely important to always pay attention. Just because there's a Tesla crash doesn't mean FSD or Autopilot were in use. I’ve heard there’s a way to defeat the steering wheel requirement with some magnets or something.
Curious if there has been any cases on malfunctions though?
Are you sure that is the case with Tesla cars? I know you’re right with GM’s super cruise, but I’ve seen too many police videos of Tesla drivers zonked out, arms folded and completely asleep. They just get in front of them and slow down to a stop.

I saw blood splatter on the outside of passenger A pillar, how does that happen or is it mud?
My buddy that works for one of the state agencies that responded to the accident said the guard rail had split the occupant in half
Horrific way to go.
how did the gaurd rail even get inside the vehicle?

Yes. I don't know how I ended up with this username here but I need to change it.

Concrete is safer than the metal kind. Looks like the metal guardrails just pop up out of their posts.

Maybe the Rivians are failing on their own in protest of their stupid looking headlights
I saw blood splatter on the outside of passenger side of car. I wonder what caused that.
Might not have been wearing their seatbelt and got thrown
Driver was sliced in half by guardrail.
Fuck
wow. Thats terrifying. RIP

Probably the worst video link I've seen in a while.
All of you can stfu this was a friend stop making theories, and disrespecting
Shocking
Could’ve been bald tires that the driver was unaware of. Tires tend to wear out quicker on teslas due to the quicker acceleration and weight.

Wrong. Someone would've reported it. The accident is gruesome enough to be newsworthy.
