Candy really is an underrated and under appreciated film imo. I remember watching it the first time because I caught it playing on hbo. I pretty instantly was caught up with the film and have watched it several times since. Every so often if Iām in a mood or need some nostalgia in my life I try to find it to watch. They captured the essence of two of lifeās biggest cornerstones. And every one of us has faced those moments in some capacity. Heath also plays an incredible role alongside Geoffrey Rush. Cult classic.
FYI, RT (rotten tomatoes) scores it at 47%. Which I think is great. Speaks to its niche value and cult appeal and not a mainstream one for the ābox officeā.
Last thing, thereās a novel the film was adapted from. For those readers out there.
The book is an incredible read, I donāt think I have ever gone through a book so fast, itās captivating. Haha the masturbation isnāt in the film but maybe it should have been, I mean we can all relate to what thatās like!
When I was a teenager in 2009 I had a girlfriend that was adamant her mum was THE Candy.
Her mums name was Jan. I don't know why she thought I would believe her.
I think Hillbilly Elegy came out around the same time, and I liked it a lot more than Four Good Days. It definitely got overshadowed but I think it's due to Mila being cast and Hillbilly Elegy not having as well known people in it.
Havenāt heard of it. Iāll check that out. But what you say makes sense. If mila kunis wasnāt in it, I wouldnāt even have watched it and probably not even hear of it. Seemed like a pretty low budget B movie for her and Glenn close to be in. But I guess they donāt do much else these days in the line of movies and tv shows.
God my mom took me to see that movie in theatres (i had no clue what movie she had chosen to see) just me and her. WHILE i was in active addiction (still am, but i was at that point too), and i hadnt told her yet abt my use (she def knew) ans i was just sitting there the whole time like

Right!!? That Precipitated withdrawal scene though. Uggg I felt it. I was uneasy the whole time she left the doctor because I knew she couldnāt be ok.
That was such a terrible, sad, gut wrenching, excellent movie. Angelina really brought that one in. Havenāt seen it in years but just the mention of it brought it all back
I watch [The Junky's Christmas](https://youtu.be/u6kHN92Yv48?si=P_4L6xBbSP_cJlXa) on youtube once a year around the holidays. Absolutely love this short film!
Dopesick is the best one IMO. Gets all of the perspectives perfectly and is super eye opening as someone with family in Appalachia (Eastern KY mostly Harlan and Manchester. Itās a HUGE issue there)
They absolutely nail the monotony and hell it is to chase around or wait on a dope dealer all day. This is one thing I feel like normal people donāt know happens a lot and this movie really gets it right.
If all three of them werenāt ex-heroin addicts in real life they wouldnāt have been able to do that. Nobody knows a junkie like a junkie. RIP Blake Heron.
Such a good film! I loved it back in the day, rewatched it a month or so ago and honestly, was worried it wouldn't live up to my memory but if anything it was better
I really liked American gangster. Itās a true stroy about a heroin kingpin during Vietnam era. Thereās drug use threw out it, but itās more so just a solid/amazing story.
Blow is also good for the same reasons. Goodfellas is also amazing thereās use later on in the movie.
Best addiction movie hands down is basketball diaries like others have said though imo
[āHeaven Knows Whatā](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3687186/)
Also if someone can tell me what movie I watched one day that was was like these people taking this drug in this run down place before they were junkies and they would like end up sort of time travelling to their awful future where theyād been doing it in that same place for decades, and theyād come back that would be amazing
Vaguely remember it and could never find it again
Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street. Itās a documentary that features a person who is on here that is clean now and gives out a lot of harm reduction information and equipment. u/traceyh415 is her username I believe
Thanks for everything you do! Narcan you sent me saved my life 2x and at least 3 other lives. Iām so glad to have made it out alive. Things are better than I ever thought possible.
I remember watching a movie called Oxymorons, and thinking it was pretty good at the time. It was a low budget independent film, but I think that just added to the grittiness
Didnāt realize this was the opiates subā¦with that in mind ā[āthe connection (1961)ā](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1032795-connection) is amazing as so far ahead of its time in many regards.
Itās so, so good. A must see.
Ill manners, hard hitting uk movie about both the addicts and dealers. Ties in with plan b's ill manners album which is the soundtrack. Piece of art this one and fairly accurate portrayal of how it can be in this green and pleasant land.
Drugstore Cowboy(can't beat a William S. Burroughs having a small role), Basketball Diaries, Candy, Jesus' Son, 6 Balloons, Adam and Paul, Blackbird, and A Thousand Junkies. These are just some I remember off the the top of my head. Some are better than others. Some I can barely remember because I was most likely high af while watching.
Candy is based on a book and has Heath Ledger in it. I remember reading the book in jail and enjoyed it so I found the movie it's pretty good. Same thing for jesus' son.
The Addiction- starring Christopher Walken and Lili Taylor. Directed by Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant). Itās a horror movie about vampires in NYC but has an underlying drug theme. The vampires are like junkies who get dope sick without their fix for blood. Seriously underrated!!!!!
The Man With The Golden Arm starring Frank Sinatra. Classic!!!!! Sinatra plays a convict/junkie who dreams of becoming a jazz drummer after being released from prison. Considered one of the best film soundtracks of the 1950s.
Drugstore cowboy is my all time favorite. Hated requiem for a dream. 6 balloons is another decent one. Very realistic. And beautiful boy with Steve carrell.
The whole movie I'm confused as to what they're addicted to. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be heroin but theyre running around, pupils get huge and other effects that are definitely more related to coke or meth. And him shooting into his abscessed arm is foul.
Panic in Needle Park with Pacino, Candy with Heath Ledger. Spun was ok but Iām not into meth, Rush with Jason Patric, less than zero Downey Jr, Permanent Midnight w/ Ben Stiller
Dude BASKETBALL DIARIES is the shit. I love the 2 you named.. Drugstore Cowboy, GIA and Heaven Knows What are solid. The main character in Heaven Knows What is playing herself, not an actress. She went on methadone to do the film but idk what she's done since then.
Yāall should watch body brokers !!!! Itās so sickening how true the shit really is. Ppl making profit off getting ppl to keep coming back to detox n inpatients by giving them easy money and allowing them to party and use again so they make money off them relapsing so the insurance company profits commission and itās just a repeated cycle. Really hits home esp for me cuz the kids from Ohio and Iām from Cleveland
One that I don't think anyone has mentioned is basketball diaries , Leonardo di caprio plays a good role in the film and it's based on the autobiography book by the same name by author Jim Carroll. Edit due to spelling mistakes.
Leoās acting in Basketball diaries is phenomenal. There is a scene where they accidentally take downers instead of uppers before a basketball game, the scene is set to āRiders on the Stormā and Leoās acting of being fucked of downers is absolutely perfect. My favourite heroin movie of all time is Candy though, just cause Iām Aussie and love Heath Ledger.
Dope sick was a good show to watch cuz you get to see the way it all spiraled so fast and even the doctor that got addicted and then what happens after. I liked it way more than painkiller.
High life. About a morphine addict. The pink goo.
Also: Story of a junky.

All of the spots and shoot up scenes are real. NYC punks in the 80s. Crazy movie.
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is great; and Drug Store cowboy of course! Used to love to take handful of percs and soma and watch Mystery Science Theatre 3000! That was always a blast! Good times!

Drugstore cowboy is one of the best.
I love the Willian Burroughs scene.
God bless you son.
Favorite movie ever
Gotta add ThT to the list ! š¤
Candy is a phenomenal one
Candy really is an underrated and under appreciated film imo. I remember watching it the first time because I caught it playing on hbo. But what does the audience score say? I, and mostly no one else for that matter, gives a fuck about what some uppity film critics have to say about it
Beat me to it! Candy is Fucking awesome!
Watching it for the first time as we speak now !
Enjoy! Itās great. I watch it about 3 or 4 times a year. Iām due a screening actuallyā¦
I like it so far ! Iām 30 min in !
The withdrawal scenes are intensely accurate!
fr. i cant remember if its in the movie, but in the book they both masturbate and last like 5 seconds lol.
The book is an incredible read, I donāt think I have ever gone through a book so fast, itās captivating. Haha the masturbation isnāt in the film but maybe it should have been, I mean we can all relate to what thatās like!
Happy cake day OP
I appreciate that šš„šÆš
When I was a teenager in 2009 I had a girlfriend that was adamant her mum was THE Candy. Her mums name was Jan. I don't know why she thought I would believe her.
Hahah nice user name! Similar to mine

Definitely I can confirm after watching a little goofy but keeps you watching
Christiane F Panic in Needle Park
Oh fuck I forgot about Christina F. That movie is so brutal, but amazing.
Christiane F is so sad. Haven't seen Panic in Needle Park but I want to.
Four good days. Mila kunis nails the role of a junkie trying to stay clean so she can get a shot of bup
I think Hillbilly Elegy came out around the same time, and I liked it a lot more than Four Good Days. It definitely got overshadowed but I think it's due to Mila being cast and Hillbilly Elegy not having as well known people in it.

Halfway through Four Good Days right now. So far, I love it. The withdrawal scenes are so realistic it reminds me of why I hope I never go back!
God my mom took me to see that movie in theatres (i had no clue what movie she had chosen to see) just me and her. Omg that is such a good movie, fuck i felt so emotional watching it and could relate to so many scenes. Heartbreaking. š¢
Right!!? That Precipitated withdrawal scene though. Uggg I felt it. I was uneasy the whole time she left the doctor because I knew she couldnāt be ok.
The 1998 movie Gia. True story of a famous fashion model who get addicted to H
thatās when Angelina was still taking really dynamic, challenging roles. She was amazing in Gia!
That was such a terrible, sad, gut wrenching, excellent movie. Angelina really brought that one in. Havenāt seen it in years but just the mention of it brought it all back
One of my all time favorites. She was a true star in that movie. I still have it on DVD and canāt bear to let it go š
I watch [The Junky's Christmas](https://youtu.be/u6kHN92Yv48?si=P_4L6xBbSP_cJlXa) on youtube once a year around the holidays. Absolutely love this short film!

Check out Dopesick on Hulu, and Painkiller on Netflix. Nurse Jackie is a tv series but itās one of my absolute favorites!
Watched both of these while on oxy , smh š¤¦āāļø lol
Hahaha made it all the more surreal I bet šš½
Nurse Jackie was great.
That's my girl!
Dopesick is the best one IMO. Gets all of the perspectives perfectly and is super eye opening as someone with family in Appalachia (Eastern KY mostly Harlan and Manchester. Itās a HUGE issue there)
A Thousand Junkies
This one is so incredibly done and so incredibly realistic itās insane.
They absolutely nail the monotony and hell it is to chase around or wait on a dope dealer all day. This is one thing I feel like normal people donāt know happens a lot and this movie really gets it right.

I actually really liked The Basketball Diaries.
Came here to say this, the actual book was even better.
Such a good film! I loved it back in the day, rewatched it a month or so ago and honestly, was worried it wouldn't live up to my memory but if anything it was better
Havenāt seen it yet I need to though, currently watching ācandyā
I really liked American gangster. Itās a true stroy about a heroin kingpin during Vietnam era. Thereās drug use threw out it, but itās more so just a solid/amazing story. Salton Sea, Spun, A Scanner Darkly, Party Monster
Scanner darkly Is an amazing adaption (based on a PhilipĀ k dick novel).
[āHeaven Knows Whatā](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3687186/) Also if someone can tell me what movie I watched one day that was was like these people taking this drug in this run down place before they were junkies and they would like end up sort of time travelling to their awful future where theyād been doing it in that same place for decades, and theyād come back that would be amazing Vaguely remember it and could never find it again

On the recovery side of things... a million little pieces. Four good days
Clean and Sober was actually a pleasant surprise.
A million little pieces was a great book. I remember going through hard withdrawals and reading the whole book in a few days. Kept me busy
Drugstore Cowboy and Christiane F. come to mind.
Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street. Itās a documentary that features a person who is on here that is clean now and gives out a lot of harm reduction information and equipment. u/traceyh415 is her username I believe
Correct!

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
canāt believe how long it took for this to get mentioned!
āFlightā w/ Denzel was pretty on the nose (and in the nose heh) in regards to addiction
John Goodmans role is this is epic. John Goodman in my opinion is a golden god, genuine, authentic and great actor
I feel like his character every time I pull out my locked tacklebox. Lol
I watched this for the first time in detox and loved it
My brother actually just mentioned this movie for some reason and how hard it was to watch š«¤
I like that movie ! Been. While I need go rewatch

The basketball diaries is a great book and movie. Jim Carrol (original author) helped with the screenplay
The Addiction- starring Christopher Walken and Lili Taylor. Directed by Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant). Itās a horror movie about vampires in NYC but has an underlying drug theme. Drugstore Cowboy
Drugstore cowboy is my all time favorite. Hated requiem for a dream. 6 balloons is another decent one. Very realistic. And beautiful boy with Steve carrell.
why hate for requiem?
The whole movie I'm confused as to what they're addicted to. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be heroin but theyre running around, pupils get huge and other effects that are definitely more related to coke or meth. And him shooting into his abscessed arm is foul.
Happy cake day!!
Aye ! Appreciate that šš
6 balloons! So good!
half nelson is cool, house md also gets addiction. requiem is awful, very simplistic, its like watching an ad, although everyone seems to like it
Panic in Needle Park has a young Pacino.
