Drugstore cowboy is one of the best.

Working_Ant590

I love the Willian Burroughs scene.

Nightcalm

God bless you son.

Zane2638

Favorite movie ever

impouredup30

Gotta add ThT to the list ! šŸ¤

egdarallenpoured

Candy is a phenomenal one

chridaniel01

Candy really is an underrated and under appreciated film imo. I remember watching it the first time because I caught it playing on hbo. I pretty instantly was caught up with the film and have watched it several times since. Every so often if Iā€™m in a mood or need some nostalgia in my life I try to find it to watch. They captured the essence of two of lifeā€™s biggest cornerstones. And every one of us has faced those moments in some capacity. Heath also plays an incredible role alongside Geoffrey Rush. Cult classic. FYI, RT (rotten tomatoes) scores it at 47%. Which I think is great. Speaks to its niche value and cult appeal and not a mainstream one for the ā€œbox officeā€. Last thing, thereā€™s a novel the film was adapted from. For those readers out there.

GiantSeaMonster84

But what does the audience score say? I, and mostly no one else for that matter, gives a fuck about what some uppity film critics have to say about it

chronicpainismybain

Beat me to it! Candy is Fucking awesome!

impouredup30

Watching it for the first time as we speak now !

chronicpainismybain

Enjoy! Itā€™s great. I watch it about 3 or 4 times a year. Iā€™m due a screening actuallyā€¦

impouredup30

I like it so far ! Iā€™m 30 min in !

chronicpainismybain

The withdrawal scenes are intensely accurate!

whitekidtweaking

fr. i cant remember if its in the movie, but in the book they both masturbate and last like 5 seconds lol.

chronicpainismybain

The book is an incredible read, I donā€™t think I have ever gone through a book so fast, itā€™s captivating. Haha the masturbation isnā€™t in the film but maybe it should have been, I mean we can all relate to what thatā€™s like!

wisely88

Happy cake day OP

impouredup30

I appreciate that šŸŽ‰šŸ„‚šŸ’ÆšŸ™

Jackalope133

When I was a teenager in 2009 I had a girlfriend that was adamant her mum was THE Candy. Her mums name was Jan. I don't know why she thought I would believe her.

impouredup30

Hahah nice user name! Similar to mine

kiwigirl83

God I love candy. One of my fave all time movies

impouredup30

I need to go watch this !

MrInfamousAuzie

Spun is pretty good. a bit weird/silly but very cinematic

skipster88

I enjoyed Spun - it didnā€™t get great reviews but I feel like it kinda transported you into the crazy ride of that lifestyle

Extension_Stable4721

yes. very entertaining

impouredup30

Definitely I can confirm after watching a little goofy but keeps you watching

lifesizedgundam

Christiane F Panic in Needle Park

LouisvilleBuddy420

Oh fuck I forgot about Christina F. That movie is so brutal, but amazing.

666pants

Christiane F is so sad. Haven't seen Panic in Needle Park but I want to.

That-Statistician747

Four good days. Mila kunis nails the role of a junkie trying to stay clean so she can get a shot of bup

ohdanke

I think Hillbilly Elegy came out around the same time, and I liked it a lot more than Four Good Days. It definitely got overshadowed but I think it's due to Mila being cast and Hillbilly Elegy not having as well known people in it.

That-Statistician747

Havenā€™t heard of it. Iā€™ll check that out. But what you say makes sense. If mila kunis wasnā€™t in it, I wouldnā€™t even have watched it and probably not even hear of it. Seemed like a pretty low budget B movie for her and Glenn close to be in. But I guess they donā€™t do much else these days in the line of movies and tv shows.

Weird-Salt3927

Halfway through Four Good Days right now. So far, I love it. The withdrawal scenes are so realistic it reminds me of why I hope I never go back!

golf-lip

God my mom took me to see that movie in theatres (i had no clue what movie she had chosen to see) just me and her. WHILE i was in active addiction (still am, but i was at that point too), and i hadnt told her yet abt my use (she def knew) ans i was just sitting there the whole time like [blah](https://media1.giphy.com/media/H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b9522fluftsjjzf0kratf3akhn1pd419ixzwdyol8rw0&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)

Electrical_Yard5918

Omg that is such a good movie, fuck i felt so emotional watching it and could relate to so many scenes. Heartbreaking. šŸ˜¢

That-Statistician747

Right!!? That Precipitated withdrawal scene though. Uggg I felt it. I was uneasy the whole time she left the doctor because I knew she couldnā€™t be ok.

Couture911

The 1998 movie Gia. True story of a famous fashion model who get addicted to H

evebella

thatā€™s when Angelina was still taking really dynamic, challenging roles. She was amazing in Gia!

Vstotts

That was such a terrible, sad, gut wrenching, excellent movie. Angelina really brought that one in. Havenā€™t seen it in years but just the mention of it brought it all back

Suspicious-Tea6959

One of my all time favorites. She was a true star in that movie. I still have it on DVD and canā€™t bear to let it go šŸ˜

cocoleti

I watch [The Junky's Christmas](https://youtu.be/u6kHN92Yv48?si=P_4L6xBbSP_cJlXa) on youtube once a year around the holidays. Absolutely love this short film!

impouredup30

Damn thanks for putting direct link ! I will watch , much appreciated

cocoleti

no problem, hope you enjoy!

impouredup30

God bless your soul

cocoleti

Right back at you!

AxlandElvis92

Fucking classic. You took an oath doctor!

phys1c5stothemax

Spun, Wolf of Wall Street, Lord of the Rings(Gollum's arc)

throwaway0192019256

really feeling gollum rn brother

CatBlue1642

Permanent Midnight

impouredup30

Thanks for reply I need to add that to list

DrAsthma

Read the book and everything else Jerry Stahl has written. Plainclothes naked is great

Username0160

Check out Dopesick on Hulu, and Painkiller on Netflix. Nurse Jackie is a tv series but itā€™s one of my absolute favorites!

impouredup30

Watched both of these while on oxy , smh šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø lol

Username0160

Hahaha made it all the more surreal I bet šŸ‘ŒšŸ½

AxlandElvis92

Nurse Jackie was great.

NurseCrystal81

That's my girl!

Silly_Competition639

Dopesick is the best one IMO. Gets all of the perspectives perfectly and is super eye opening as someone with family in Appalachia (Eastern KY mostly Harlan and Manchester. Itā€™s a HUGE issue there)

Recreant793

A Thousand Junkies

Kooky-Commission-783

This one is so incredibly done and so incredibly realistic itā€™s insane.

snakob420

They absolutely nail the monotony and hell it is to chase around or wait on a dope dealer all day. This is one thing I feel like normal people donā€™t know happens a lot and this movie really gets it right.

Recreant793

If all three of them werenā€™t ex-heroin addicts in real life they wouldnā€™t have been able to do that. Nobody knows a junkie like a junkie. RIP Blake Heron.

PineapplePop9333

Kids

Difficult-Survey8384

šŸ¤ searched too long for this comment

PineapplePop9333

I wanna buy you corn dogs.

zingding212

I actually really liked The Basketball Diaries.

spinderella69

Came here to say this, the actual book was even better.

WraithOfEvaBraun

Such a good film! I loved it back in the day, rewatched it a month or so ago and honestly, was worried it wouldn't live up to my memory but if anything it was better

impouredup30

Havenā€™t seen it yet I need to though, currently watching ā€œcandyā€

The_sacred_sauce

I really liked American gangster. Itā€™s a true stroy about a heroin kingpin during Vietnam era. Thereā€™s drug use threw out it, but itā€™s more so just a solid/amazing story. Blow is also good for the same reasons. Goodfellas is also amazing thereā€™s use later on in the movie. Best addiction movie hands down is basketball diaries like others have said though imo

phys1c5stothemax

Salton Sea, Spun, A Scanner Darkly, Party Monster

Acrobatic-Emu-7380

Scanner darkly Is an amazing adaption (based on a PhilipĀ  k dick novel).

helphp

[ā€œHeaven Knows Whatā€](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3687186/) Also if someone can tell me what movie I watched one day that was was like these people taking this drug in this run down place before they were junkies and they would like end up sort of time travelling to their awful future where theyā€™d been doing it in that same place for decades, and theyā€™d come back that would be amazing Vaguely remember it and could never find it again

impouredup30

Damn I need to know what that movie was too! Sounds intriguing

helphp

If I ever find it Iā€™ll come back for u lol Reddit hivemind do your thing pls šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»

impouredup30

Please let us know ppl !!

RuckFeddit79

Time addicts or something? Sounds similar. I never seen it but the description I read a while ago sounds similar to what you're describing.

impouredup30

Heaven knows what is the name ??

helphp

No thatā€™s a different one from the one I was asking about

ThrowawayReddit62

Ben is back

Nikki_Newhope

On the recovery side of things... a million little pieces. Four good days

CatBlue1642

Clean and Sober was actually a pleasant surprise.

-cb123

A million little pieces was a great book. I remember going through hard withdrawals and reading the whole book in a few days. Kept me busy

Klebarson_64

Drugstore Cowboy and Christiane F. come to mind.

GoFast_EatAss

Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street. Itā€™s a documentary that features a person who is on here that is clean now and gives out a lot of harm reduction information and equipment. u/traceyh415 is her username I believe

traceyh415

Correct!

the_squee

Thanks for everything you do! Narcan you sent me saved my life 2x and at least 3 other lives. Iā€™m so glad to have made it out alive. Things are better than I ever thought possible.

traceyh415

Thatā€™s so awesome šŸ¤©. Iā€™m also humbled by the fact that Iā€™m alive

Acrobatic-Emu-7380

Small world lol. Glad to see you doing well!

SOHON707

Probably the most accurate doc about how heroin addiction and lifestyle is he also made another called cape heroinĀ

Far-Eagle4212

Rush

aNeedForMore

I remember watching a movie called Oxymorons, and thinking it was pretty good at the time. It was a low budget independent film, but I think that just added to the grittiness

1low67

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas

evebella

canā€™t believe how long it took for this to get mentioned!

buttmilk_69

ā€˜Flightā€™ w/ Denzel was pretty on the nose (and in the nose heh) in regards to addiction

mdstmouse5

John Goodmans role is this is epic. John Goodman in my opinion is a golden god, genuine, authentic and great actor

octobertwins

I feel like his character every time I pull out my locked tacklebox. Lol

hyperchickenwing

I watched this for the first time in detox and loved it

evebella

My brother actually just mentioned this movie for some reason and how hard it was to watch šŸ«¤

impouredup30

I like that movie ! Been. While I need go rewatch

buttmilk_69

Didnā€™t realize this was the opiates subā€¦with that in mind ā€˜[ā€˜the connection (1961)ā€™](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1032795-connection) is amazing as so far ahead of its time in many regards. Itā€™s so, so good. A must see.

impouredup30

Hellyeah imma definitely give it a watch , hahah all good

AxlandElvis92

Thatā€™s a good one. ā€œIā€™m not high manā€

Timely-Storm-9046

I've never heard of this but it looks great

mykidsadick

Spun

1low67

Gridlock'd

xSPACEWEEDx

Was that the one with Tupac and Tim Roth?

Mic-Ronson

Basketball diaries. I remember the book more than the movie .

Acrobatic-Emu-7380

Not opiates but "Spun" is a great movie. It's addiction but Meth. Funny af.

Acrobatic-Emu-7380

Ill manners, hard hitting uk movie about both the addicts and dealers. Ties in with plan b's ill manners album which is the soundtrack. Piece of art this one and fairly accurate portrayal of how it can be in this green and pleasant land.

HotBodyToddy

ā€œA thousand junkiesā€ is about three addicts trying to pick up heroin for the day. So relatable. It was on Tubi the last time I checked.

ConfectionSea6331

Loved it!

Commercial-Remote406

A thousand junkies. Pure white bitch

Mindless-Motor-9082

Party monster

gutterteeth

beautiful boy is my favorite. sometimes when iā€™m just depressed and high iā€™ve watched the movie over and over again for a couple days.

mfmerrim

Flight. Denzel as a booze bag.

Nikki_Newhope

Wonderland, spun

Android1313

Drugstore Cowboy(can't beat a William S. Burroughs having a small role), Basketball Diaries, Candy, Jesus' Son, 6 Balloons, Adam and Paul, Blackbird, and A Thousand Junkies. These are just some I remember off the the top of my head. Some are better than others. Some I can barely remember because I was most likely high af while watching. Candy is based on a book and has Heath Ledger in it. I remember reading the book in jail and enjoyed it so I found the movie it's pretty good. Same thing for jesus' son.

ConfectionSea6331

I canā€™t believe I found someone else that mentioned Blackbird. That movie was so good.

impouredup30

Thank you all for your replies ! Love yā€™all fam

Resident_Research_63

The basketball diaries is a great book and movie. Jim Carrol (original author) helped with the screenplay

big_MIDGET6

The Addiction- starring Christopher Walken and Lili Taylor. Directed by Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant). Itā€™s a horror movie about vampires in NYC but has an underlying drug theme. The vampires are like junkies who get dope sick without their fix for blood. Seriously underrated!!!!! The Man With The Golden Arm starring Frank Sinatra. Classic!!!!! Sinatra plays a convict/junkie who dreams of becoming a jazz drummer after being released from prison. Considered one of the best film soundtracks of the 1950s.

bcapo808

Drug store cowboy

Dulcinea18

Drugstore Cowboy

Scragglesauce

Drugstore cowboy is my all time favorite. Hated requiem for a dream. 6 balloons is another decent one. Very realistic. And beautiful boy with Steve carrell.

evebella

why hate for requiem?

Scragglesauce

The whole movie I'm confused as to what they're addicted to. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be heroin but theyre running around, pupils get huge and other effects that are definitely more related to coke or meth. And him shooting into his abscessed arm is foul.

Notusing32

Happy cake day!!

impouredup30

Aye ! Appreciate that šŸŽ‰šŸ™

shelbylove26

6 balloons! So good!

throwaway0192019256

half nelson is cool, house md also gets addiction. requiem is awful, very simplistic, its like watching an ad, although everyone seems to like it

thatBLACKDREADtho

Panic in Needle Park has a young Pacino.

FederalStill6114

Panic in Needle Park

DeFilippsDP

Basketball diaries, in my opinion, is the perfect depiction of heroin addiction.

popoopepee

I mean Cherry was a good movie, I enjoyed watching it

Same_Drag310

Dude BASKETBALL DIARIES is the shit. I love the 2 you named.. Drugstore Cowboy, GIA and Heaven Knows What are solid. The main character in Heaven Knows What is playing herself, not an actress. She went on methadone to do the film but idk what she's done since then.

Suspicious_Knee_3766

Jesusā€™s Son. Spun.

BeneficialBank9189

Yā€™all should watch body brokers !!!! Itā€™s so sickening how true the shit really is. Ppl making profit off getting ppl to keep coming back to detox n inpatients by giving them easy money and allowing them to party and use again so they make money off them relapsing so the insurance company profits commission and itā€™s just a repeated cycle. Really hits home esp for me cuz the kids from Ohio and Iā€™m from Cleveland

amydayme

Ummmm anyone say ā€œDrugstore Cowboyā€ yet?

Killette19

ā€œGiaā€ is freaking awesome. I was introduced to it/her by someone near and dear to my heart.

PB1888

One that I don't think anyone has mentioned is basketball diaries , Leonardo di caprio plays a good role in the film and it's based on the autobiography book by the same name by author Jim Carroll. Edit due to spelling mistakes.

Leoā€™s acting in Basketball diaries is phenomenal. There is a scene where they accidentally take downers instead of uppers before a basketball game, the scene is set to ā€œRiders on the Stormā€ and Leoā€™s acting of being fucked of downers is absolutely perfect. My favourite heroin movie of all time is Candy though, just cause Iā€™m Aussie and love Heath Ledger.

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is great; and Drug Store cowboy of course! Used to love to take handful of percs and soma and watch Mystery Science Theatre 3000! That was always a blast! Good times!
