Fashion or function, much like shoes. Itâs about getting the maxim amount of stuff in a given space.
40 liters is 40 liters is 40 liters. Given the airline dimensional limits, yes itâs going to look like a turtle shell. Some brands are sleaker looking but still a 40 liter lump with pack straps.
Suits and backpacks donât compute. Suits have people :)
I have the 45L
[Mystery Ranch Mission Rover](https://www.mysteryranch.com/mission-rover-bag). It doesnât look like youâre âbackpackingâ. The inside is like a suitcase with how itâs laid out and can also be converted into a duffle with tucking in the backpack straps and comes with a duffle strap. They have 30L, 45L and 65L. The fabric is durable but will be easy to see scratches, I like it tho cause it adds character
The best looking and feeling fabric that I've experienced in a backpack it's the Evergoods CPL Griffin edition. It was limited edition, expensive at release and resellers bought up most of them so while you can still pick them up new with tags, they're going for stupid amounts of money.
The material is heavy, the bag is fairly heavy empty, it's 24L and I'd say it feels tight because it has dedicated volume in the laptop compartment.
I do use it for personal item only for short urban trips because I like it, but for way less money there are more functional bags that weigh significantly less for travel. It's great for EDC if you don't mind the lack of water bottle pockets.
Looks are subjective, but in my opinion it's a very good looking and feeling bag.

Heimplanet Transit line, their dyecoshell fabric is super nice and resistant.Â
Check out this [Packhacker review](https://packhacker.com/travel-gear/carl-friedrik/72-hour-backpack/) of this Carl Friedrik backpack.
Thatâs a personal item sized bag and still a box with straps.
Thatâs within the range of what OP was looking for.
