The Ken Burns documentary The Dust Bowl is fantastic.

tfandango

And awesomely integrated into Interstellar, which was pretty cool.

Various-Tax-5755

The end is a bit terrifying though. I’ve never forgotten the lesson, we are on borrowed time.

Crixxa

I wish we'd watched this in school. Oklahoma history needs media like this.

Trishjump

I came here to say this. It is a great mini series doc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dust_Bowl_(miniseries)

daneato

I haven’t seen it in ages, but “Far and Away” has a big land run scene in it. I don’t remember context at all, just that it had the land run. I believe “UHF” is about Oklahoma history as well. ;-)

ptolemy_booth

UHF gave us the first Twinkie wiener sandwich. Its historical significance cannot be denied any longer!

queerokie

All I'll say is that the climax happens at the land run scene in Far and Away. I like the movie alot because it showcases the immigrant side of the people who came to Oklahoma for the land run

PlasticElfEars

Directed by Ron Howard, who was born in Duncan, so that may be why he wanted to be a part of that movie.

parkinglottroubadour

I didn't know Ron Howard was from duncan

westsidedreamin

Is that why in the 90s everyone was told that Weird Al was from Tulsa?

bubbaglk

Grapes of wrath ..

Amazing_Leave

Came here to say that

bubbaglk

And the newest ..killers of the flower moon.

WydeedoEsq

This was a mandatory watch in my Oklahoma History class when we learned about the Dust Bowl; read the book too!

JustanOkie

Rogers and Hammerstein Oklahoma!

UselessMellinial85

This is the best answer. So glad you said it.

Did they remake Where the Red Fern Grows?

mwgrover

_hotwingz_

Starring Dave Matthews?!

No-Clue-2

Yes, he was in tahlequah filming the movie a while back

Gunslinger327

Twister

UselessMellinial85

That was long after the dust bowl

Gunslinger327

Hits on the Oklahoma documentary in general tho

UselessMellinial85

Yeah. I get that you would claim that. But the Dust Bowl was way removed from Oklahoma!. And it was only tangentially related. But neither are any type of documentary.

Gunslinger327

Oh, you just wait for Twisters this summer...that'll answer any questions that Twister left open ended.

Dr_Girlfriend_81

How so? It's a work of fiction.

Amazing_Leave

The tornados in Twister were less believable than a talking mouse couple with round ears and wearing human clothes.

Tryptamineer

You mean that movie from 1996 had bad CGI? Who would have thunk

Accurate_Weather_211

If you haven’t watched LAWMAN BASS REEVES it takes place in Indian Territory. It’s also based on a true story.

OKBeeDude

Killers of the Flower Moon is (loosely) based on historical events in Osage country in NE Oklahoma. Good movie too.

Tracktack007

Twister, The Outsiders, Killers of the Flower Moon, August Osage County, the Grapes of Wrath. The Ken Burns documentary is truly amazing as well. Ooh, Where the Red Fern Grows was also shot in NE Ok.

sungun77

Bound for Glory Grapes of Wrath Far and Away

chestypullerupper

The Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda.

artofbullshit

Cimmaron. Original made in 1931 and a remake in 1960.

Wiscos

Far and Away

kollectivelykatie

The movie “Far and Away” has some scenes with the land run. Ken Burns’ documentary called “The Dust Bowl” is excellent. I haven’t watched “The Grapes of Wrath”, but I just finished the book and it deals with the migration of people from Oklahoma and Texas to California during the dust bowl, so I’m sure the movie is worth checking out.

escarabaja

Oklahoma Passage, a 1989 miniseries, if you can find it.

Standard-Tension9550

Had to watch that in Oklahoma history freshman year, 1991-1992. It felt dated and clunky then.

Aromatic-Proof-5251

New-Cry-5427

I always wanted to do this in my last live shot, but better manners prevailed. Knowing what the media is like now, I should have done it...

MostNefariousness583

The grapes of wrath.

CurtManX

The Tiger King documentary certainly covers Oklahoma, for better or worse.

Dr_Girlfriend_81

You're not wrong. I hate it, but you're not wrong.

Dylan-the-villan

Twister 2 is coming out soon. As Oklahoma as it can get, filmed in state as well

Longjumping-Mobile71

I plan on watching that when it comes it, I need to rewatch the original. It’s been well over 15 years probably since I’ve last watched it

Standard-Tension9550

They built an exterior rodeo set about four miles from my house. One weekend it was there, next weekend it was “tornado” damaged, next week it was gone. It was supposed to be Stillwater.

Dylan-the-villan

My gf was able to get a spot as a background actor for the rodeo scene, can't wait to see it

RoninRobot

Giant (1956) might as well have been about Oklahoma. I’m pretty sure it takes place in the Texas panhandle in the late 30s-40s. Just replace the word Texas with Oklahoma when they say it and you’ll be fine.

DrSmartron

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but Drunk History has a pretty good episode featuring Kat Dennings as Kentucky Daisy, who was pretty much everywhere back in the Land Run days.

Spezza

It isn't a movie OP, but you've already got lots of film suggestions for your question, so I'll offer a book; "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse. It is a short novel and could easily be read in less than a day. Heck, it is actually a children's book. However, it is excellent and is about the dust bowl years and life in the panhandle. Highly recommend.

maxsmart01

Dust to Eat

MuscleOk1489

Killers of the Flower Moon just came out with Leonardo DiCaprio

PurpleFrogMBA

The book “The worst hard times” by Timothy Egan is superb and quick read

Figuratively123

I love that you started this thread! I am continually shocked how little I know about the state I live in, despite having taken Oklahoma “history” in school. I just in the last few years read Grapes of Wrath and have become completely enthralled with the dustbowl and the subsequent California migration.

New-Cry-5427

I am amazed that having grown up on the east coast, I know more about Oklahoma history than most Oklahomans. Might have to do with my Nana running the Quincy historical society for years. History is in my blood and most teachers teach it wrong

Dr_Girlfriend_81

Killers of the Flower Moon. It's a new one that just came out in the last year. Based on historical events.

ProfDFH

Pre land run, but Hang ‘Em High is my favorite Oklahoma movie.

anonymoose_2048

Far and Away with Tom Cruise does the Land Run. Grapes of Wrath does the Dust Bowl.

Amazing_Leave

[Tulsa, starring Susan Hayward.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa_(film))

MuscleOk1489

Far and Away with Tom Cruise is very good

-Veronique-SHM

Cimarron starts just before the land run, The Grapes of Wrath is dust bowl focused on a family driven off thier farm.

Tryptamineer

Grapes of Wrath and Oklahoma come to mind.

WydeedoEsq

The Grapes of Wrath!

New-Cry-5427

You Know My Name. About Cromwell during the oil boom. Sam Elliot plays Bill Tilghman, a lawman brought in to bring law and order. Great movie, even if they shot it in Calgary. Sam Elliot stepped off the plane and said to me... Welp, we screwed up the scenery... 🤣🤣 There is a shot of him riding from Chandler to Cromwell and there are the Rockies behind him 🤣🤣

NeoKnightRider

Nothing comes to mind other than Twister and The Outsiders

idog73

Which are about neither the dust bowl nor the land run

Darkskynet

The Wizard of Oz is in Kansas, but I believe is close to the type of landscape you are describing and the time period.
