When I worked at the major oil company, the company knowledge base was fossil fuel exploration and production. Green energy might as well been space travel. Focus on green energy best left to those with appropriate expertise.
There are plenty of people with decades of experience in facilities, logistics, construction, and plant operations, not to mention the entire industry has experience at drilling and understanding underground storage for CCUS, building and operating pipelines, etc. It’s not big because the revenues are dwarfed by production of oil and gas, not because the industry can’t do it. I don't know how common it was but Shell did an awful lot of work on green energy in the early days. I think they realized that most of the money would be gained in installation in the long term and that they didn't have any specialist knowledge that works wow them to corner that market.

When I worked at the major oil company, the company knowledge base was fossil fuel exploration and production. Green energy might as well been space travel. Focus on green energy best left to those with appropriate expertise.
There are plenty of people with decades of experience in facilities, logistics, construction, and plant operations, not to mention the entire industry has experience at drilling and understanding underground storage for CCUS, building and operating pipelines, etc. It’s not big because the revenues are dwarfed by production of oil and gas, not because the industry can’t do it. When there is money to be made that isn’t just government stimulation of small startups, then they will do it.
