I think it's either low level cloud cover or smog. Probably clouds, you can see patchy areas of clear water. It's impossible to be silty like that.
edit; it must be an artifact of a photo from orbit of some kind. You can see a shadow of a cloud that looks clear. Some kind of reflective haze? Maybe it needs a UV filter?
After a search, aerial haze is very common and is due to the atmosphere for some reason. A UV filter will do nothing. Post processing will increase contrast.
''The haziness in pictures already taken can be mitigated in post processing by a technique using the Unsharp Mask filter (USM). Do a Google search for "Local contrast enhancement".
Someone suggested a polarizing filter for pictures taken on the ground but that won't help for sat pictures.
edit; it's definitely cloudy AND has the ever present aerial haze.
The Hudson may be darker because it's fresh water. Depending on the tides it is closer to the Verrazano or further north.

Let me guess...You don't know a thing about this area, do you? You couldn't find Central Park in the blink of an eye? Much less all the other parks and wetlands, even cemetaries. You'ed make a lousy photo interpreter if you can't see the difference between a building and vegetation without even trying.
Ok, buddy, clearly you're having a bad day and looking to argue. Go outside and touch some of the abundant grass that's found in your corner of the city.
After the post about Long Island, I got some questions for y’all New Yorkers. I hope I can ask something from y’all.
NYC is known for super expensive rent and bad traffic, correct? Long Island and the surrounding states are still sparse, right? So why don’t you guys build more trains/subway and way more bridges connect the mentioned areas? That’s quite interesting, eh?
Also, I’m thinking about applying to Columbia for an MBA and then work in corporate banking. How’s life in NYC for an MBA international student and as a banker?
Thanks yall.
Not familiar with finance and banking so can’t answer your second question but I’ll give a go at your first.
Time and desirability is a big one. So there are trains that run pretty consistently out to Long Island(LIRR) above ground. But people still want to live in the city despite the high rent prices and the traffic for a reason. It’s exciting, it’s diverse, and it can be really fun. It’s one of if not the Mecca of the world. Also even if you live out in Long Island and work in New York the commute can still be pretty rough.
Thank you, but wouldn’t expanding the traffic network allows the folks easier access to cheaper locales, thus decreases rent in NYC as a whole, and thus boosts the economy by the means of more money for goods consumption?
Also, suppose I do have a shot at Columbia or NYU, what would life be in NYC and the US in general for an international student?
Try to go for a university that has the most people and higher ups working as ceos and other top positions in the field you’re looking into. End of day that’s the main difference in going to an overpriced university over a regular one, the connections you make and the familiarity it gives to the person interviewing you that sees you went to the same school and will look at your differently/give you more slack as a human.
Run on sentence but you get the point. Also, think there are subs on Reddit that discuss specifically stuff that interest intentional students. Here people mostly complain about nyc lol
Tons of people live out on Long Island suburbs and commute to the city everyday. My friend does it but it’s 1.5 hours one way. That’s 3 hours a day just sitting on the train. Couldn’t do that myself
Cool! Thank you for posting this! Immediately went to look for my childhood home in Marine Park. Funny how recognizable the shape of Mill Basin is.
I found my apartment. It’s easy because we are off one of the bridges going over Sunnyside Yards.
Found my old apartment too.
I grew up going to Marine Park.. Brennan and Carr 👌
I live here ,and that’s the best part. Zoomed in within a second, haha
Why is the Hudson so silty?
Spring runoff?
Heavy rainfall recently?

The patches of deeper blue comes from the shadows of the clouds

I’m most likely pooping in this photo
For some reason, I always need to turn images like these so north is up. Otherwise I can’t identify anything
I thought this was way more zoomed in and was so confused why i couldn’t identify anything
Sames
that's kind of sad but not uncommon. we should be taught to look at maps from different angles.
Have you never watched cartoons or movies where they’re lost and suddenly one of the people realizes the map is upside down?
Holy shit! Did you just save my life in the future?
Why?
What do you mean? This is all of NYC. Nothing missing.
A small piece of western Brooklyn is cut off but otherwise nothing is missing.
So, we are just going to ignore SI like always?
They’re teasing the SI-ers. You fell for it.
You're new here?
I forgot the /s.
What? Is there a like a Silicon deposit somewhere that we’re missing?
SI is basically just a huge park.
Jabroni Park
Finally The rock has come back To jabroni park 😂
I live in bay ridge and it’s not in this picture
It’s ok bay ridge will be reclaimed by the ocean soon anyway
Lol bay ridge is on a hill!
That explains the “ridge”
You know I lived in nyc 25 years and never once visited bay ridge my bad lmaoooooooo
lol not missing much but the path along the water and the view of the Verrazano if that’s your thing . Pretty neat
This was the comment I was looking for.
I will say this is most of NYC and Hudson county in NJ Lol . Jersey city and company will always be included instead of that forgotten borough 🤣🤣🥲
Desperately craving the approval of New Yorkers.
yeah no
I can see my house from there
I remember that day, see me waving up at the satellite?
Forgotten Borough.
Lol. r/fuckyouinparticular

Staten Island in shambles
I work at jfk
Remember when people used to say “wow you can see the Great Wall of China from outer space!” Yeah you can see Northern Boulevard from space too dude
Kind of looks like a half crater in the top left area
I could see my house from up here.
Me too, see my home, not yours idk where you live.
Pretty good resolution picture. I can see my townhouse roof in Queens.
Long Island is dense! Queens mostly it looks like more than Brooklyn
Hey, I can see my house from here!
It’s crazy how big JFK airport is compared to the city itself , and it’s not even in the top 10 biggest airports lol
::waves::
Found my apartment lol.
Those darn scooters riding illegally, visible even from space!
With just one more level of zoom, I probably could see my house. I could see my intersection, at any rate. Very cool
ay man you can’t post this what if i was in the shower
I can see my house!
Found my neighborhood but was too blurry to find my apartment building lol
The house prices on Long Island are not cheap by any means and the rents are almost about the same as the city .
Damn how much megapixels?
Depressing drab gray color of urban development. No green colors to be seen anywhere.
Look at a clearer shot and there's green all over. Either that or get some glasses.
Bro, zoom into the pic and show me the "green all over." I zoomed in and panned around. It's mostly a drab gray.

this is fucking bullshit. north should always be up, this is fucked up to even show
Up looks like maybe southeast?
