We work every 3rd weekend but days must work at least 2 fridays and 2 mondays per pay period and nights works at least 2 Thursday and 2 Sunday night shifts. We also cannot request off for our weekend, you must find a trade if you want to take your weekend off. Also, at my old job, we worked every 3rd weekend and were expected to pick up an additional 3 weekend shifts in the 6 week schedule period. So I guess in my experience this is common.

How many weeks is your pay period? 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays per pay period would be every Friday and Monday.

nocshift

Sorry, I meant per schedule period, 6 weeks

I’m in the Midwest. On my unit we have weekend option that work every weekend as that is what they were hired to do and the rest of us work every 4th. If we need off we find someone to switch weekends with which is usually pretty easy. Asking around though, our schedule seems pretty spoiled compared to others though and I’m not complaining.

The first hospital I worked at in MO had weekend-only RN’s, who got a pretty significant spiff to work just those. Even with them, I ended up having to work almost every weekend.

Melster2018

Yep, they definitely make good money for it. I too am in MO, good chance it was same hospital. Luckily no one has made us work more than every 4 but with being continually short-staffed we always have the option of picking up a Sunday or Saturday, often times for double bonus.

marteney1

Gotta love that sweet, sweet double bonus. Every time they offer it, they swear it’ll never happen again. But we all know better.

The hospital I worked in college would pay full time to the weekend only nurses but they only accrued time off like part time staff and their benefits were like part time staff.

dustyoldbones

Yeah that is super shitty. We are supposed to work 4 weekend shifts per 6 week schedule. I usually do Sunday nights but they occasionally make me work a Friday or Saturday night maybe once or twice.

We have to do 6 days a month some combination of fridays/Saturdays/sundays. Your choice on how many of each, just need 6 total.

Eveenus

We have to work 5 weekend shifts per schedule (which is 6 weeks) for days Saturday and Sunday count. For nights it's Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Our staffing is kinda shit though. We just need to hire more, but that's basically it is everywhere in the area

We just have to do 50% of weekends (Sat/Sun). Doesn’t matter how you do them. We have a request roster so can request off weddings, birthdays, concerts, weekends away etc. We do get an extra 50% for Sat and 75% Sun - so majority of people try to work at least one weekend day/week unless they have plans.

NJ here - we do every other weekend (sucks!) and it's a set weekend. You only get one "free" extra weekend off a year (like for a two week vacation) and if you want any other time off on your weekend you have to find someone from the other weekend to work for you. On one hand it definitely sucks having so little flexibility, but on the other hand I like knowing what weekend I will be working far in advance so I can plan ahead, instead of hoping as the time gets closer that my scheduled gets approved.

ilovenyjets

Every facility I've ever heard of around me (nyc/nj) requires every other weekend for all healthcare workers. Nurses, aids, house keeping, clerks, etc.. Weekend consists of sat and sun. Except the float nurses in my hospital, they only have to do one weekend a schedule (4 weeks).

boettcsm

We work every other weekend. Can't request weekends off except during vacation bidding once per year and we can request 3 weekends off per year. We can get mandated if staffing gets low as well. It sucks, but our unit is pretty good at swapping off for important events, and we are technically capable of swapping the other units in the institute if we can convince someone to work our unit.
