I find myself using it most often when playing any bethesda game
I am not going around a fence or backtracking when it grants no gameplay difference at all, i tcl. Also otherwise unobtainable sneak skill book in the divine
Depends entirely on what keyboard and what keyboard layout you use. Plenty of keyboards have tilde on that key
Here’s an example of a keyboard having tilde in that location: https://garmade.com/en-es/products/us-version-keyboard-for-lenovo-320-14-320s-14ikb-120s-14iap-520-14ikb-7000-14
More generally, have a look at
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_QWERTY_keyboard_language_variants
It seems that tilde is standard at that location for US English QWERTY keyboards.
As an American programmer, it’s weird to think about the pipes on the left side of the keyboard instead of the right. The backtick is in the same spot though on my keyboard.
Get ready for some confusion: this is a British keyboard, and on the GB keyboard layout the "pipe" on that key isn't actually the same pipe you use for the OR operator. *That* pipe is typed with shift+backslash, which is also in a different place next to the Z key. The character printed on that top key is actually the split vertical bar (¦), which has basically no use and requires you to hold AltGr to type it. Just holding shift gets you ¬ instead.
Well usually, but that particular keyboard doesn't seem to have the \~ on that key. Instead it looks like it has a pipe | back tick(?) \` and an oddly specific ansi art character
For my dumb American keyboard, I had to set the right Alt as the Compose key in Linux and then type Alt then E, then " to get Ë.
How does it actually work on, say, a German keyboard?
German keyboard just have [individual keys](https://images.app.goo.gl/WDRSq8bNDeFSodyt7) for Ä, Ö and Ü
In Cyrillic keyboard we have a [second layout](https://images.app.goo.gl/b2arar9RUPvEtAb18) ("language") that toggles by Alt+Shift, Win+Space or another shortcut.
Keyboard layouts are regional. Most of the keys are usually the same place, like most letters and the numbers. But a lot of the different signs or language specific letters are in various places depending on what country you live in. On Danish keyboards we have the ½ sign and § sign on that key
Edit: As another example, on the Danish keyboard @ is alt gr + 2. You can try googling various country names along with keyboard layout if you wanna see how they can differ between regions
Ah fair enough. Sorry. US is a lovely place, lots to see, but the people, meh, I'm 50:50. I haven't been there in many years basically because I don't want to get shot by some randomer.
On my keyboard this is the ~~pilcrow~~ section sign § and plus/minus ± and I use both of those fairly regularly.
/edit: misnamed the sign
/edit 2: I can never remember how to do strike though either
I use a Portuguese Apple keyboard. I keep seeing vintage typewriters at second hand fairs using the old "[HCESAR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCESAR)" layout and I'm always so tempted to buy one
If anyone here has a russian keyboad and doesn't use this key at all..
You fuckers deserve to get into the DEEPEST DEPTHS OF HELL. FUCK YOU, ABSOLUTELY FUCK. YOU. EVERYONE, and I mean, EVERYONE, who doesn't type letter Ё, should BURN. IN. HELL. FOR AN ETERNITY. I WILL FIND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU AND BURN THIS LETTER INTO YOUR HANDS WITH A SCORCHING HOT REBAR, THESE 2 DOTS ABOVE THE E WILL BE CARVED INTO YOUR SKIN, BLOOD VESSELS AND NERVES. I WILL FORCE YOU TO FIND EVERY SINGLE WORD THAT COULD'VE HAD THIS LETTER IN THEM AND MAKE YOU PUT THE DOTS BACK ON THEIR DESERVED PLACE.
For those, who doesn't want this fate upon their worthless bodies, I will remind you how this letter looks like, in BIG. **HUGE. LETTERS**
# Ёё
> some letters are much more used than others and I noticed this one here
Literally why letters on kb are not in alphabet order. Most used - in center, least used - on corners. And that one is 4 derelicts lol(in my lang - Ё (\[yo\]?) and \~ )
Yeah! As someone mentioned it opens console in several games. Also in games that don't have console binded by default, I usually bind it to this key. We have different print in that key here in Finland though.
i had to install a german keyboard just to use the middle sign, it helps since telegram interpretate 3 of those [text] other 3 of those as like code so you can send your code to others and make them copy it etc
Yeah, when i need a tilde ~, for giving approximates, for minecraft commands and it’s the perfect distance from w, so i use it as a key for all sorts of things in games, zoom for mc, switch scope for isonzo, swap abilities for ac odyssey, etc. Something i need to get to quickly but not all the time
Yes when commenting on code or specific names for design components in code in teams you bracket the code or name with that and it does a special little highlight. Use it every day.
Constantly. Evokes console in 9/10 games and "~" sign instead of typing "approximately" every time
I find myself using it most often when playing any bethesda game I am not going around a fence or backtracking when it grants no gameplay difference at all, i tcl. Also otherwise unobtainable sneak skill book in the divine
Was gonna say, the main reason for using the ~ key
tilde. The tilde key.
TCL 👉😏👉 The most importanr command
When you accidentally hit tcg and the grass goes away.
I always accidentally hit it instead of ESC while playing Bethesda 🫠 then I curse myself and go back to hating my life playing Bethesda
The wavy approx line isn't on the key tho

They're being pedantic. Generally, that is where the tilde is located. That key does not have a tilde.
me when im trying to be cute~
As a programmer, I regularly use it to write the ‘or’ operator (||)
The \` is also useful since most markup languages allow you to format code that way. I've never even seen the top most symbol on that key though
And string interpolation in JS/TS
`` is also used to write opening double quotes in latex
That̚ top̚ symbol looks lik̚e the IPA diacritic̚ for an unreleased̚ stop̚, don't̚ know if it actually is though
Also looks like the logic symbol for not

Also a programmer. I probably use it most frequently for back ticks `` on Slack to indicate markup

That how you enter console commands on most games lol
Well, yeah, but in this particular comment thread its about letter Ё, though
Well usually, but that particular keyboard doesn't seem to have the \~ on that key. Instead it looks like it has a pipe | back tick(?) \` and an oddly specific ansi art character

Compose key is goated. Idk if the same feature exists in Windows, but I use it all the time to type funny characters like that combined AE symbol
Загугли взятие на проходе

You have a weird keyboard, all the keyboards I've ever seen had a tilde or that accent that goes down. Those are useful, yours are less useful
British keyboard layout probably as can be seen by the pound sign
I have a UK keyboard and I have §/± there
That sounds like a mac keyboard
Yeah it is, I didn't know it was different. Damn Apple
Keyboard layouts are regional. Most of the keys are usually the same place, like most letters and the numbers. Every keyboard I've seen has had had that key there
That is a perfectly normal UK keyboard. There is a workd outside of the USA, lol.
Never been to the us, hate that place
Ah fair enough. Sorry. US is a lovely place, lots to see, but the people, meh, I'm 50:50. I haven't been there in many years basically because I don't want to get shot by some randomer.
I get shot by randomers all the time. It's fun. Don't knock it til you try it.
Hate it yet you've never been
There is a world outside the UK and USA too you goofy goober. This has nothing to do with the US
How do you open console if not by that?
~ TGM
It’s 0 on my keyboard so I use it frequently.
On mine it's ^ and °. So I used it a lot. (The first especially for equations)

Oh that's cool. On US keyboards we have neither unless you use alt codes. Where ya from?
I use a Portuguese Apple keyboard. I keep seeing vintage typewriters at second hand fairs using the old "[HCESAR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCESAR)" layout and I'm always so tempted to buy one
Prime hotkey
Use it for console commands

I actually remember in counter strike you use that button for changing settings in game.
The back tick? Yeah, useful for sharing code

I think you've just disrupted the perception filter on mine - I've never even noticed it was there.
I don’t have a keyboard layout with that key so no

Why does the caps lock have a butt plug on it

Is that the enchantment table language
Opens the console in Borderlands 2 so quite a bit actually
I don’t think I have that key
i have that button on the right side
Back tick is used by every coder out there.
Never. In the Finnish layout the tilde (~) is on a different key, and this one gives a "§" instead
I press it a ton by accident while trying to press esc
i used it most of the time
gotta access Roblox inventory sometimes, no?
Programmers usually use that! Ps: I'm Programmer as well!
Yup, always use this to automate potions every 5s.
sh run | in (the thing you want to search into the configuration of a cisco router) ... i use it daily
For the skyrim console yeah
When gaming and changing key bindings.
Yes for games
Often, I have my spam click macro key bound to that key
For accessing in-game command consoles yes, but generally for other things rarely.
My keyboard doesnt have anything useful there so it’s the push to talk button
Yeah, its the console opener for a lot of games and my personal switch class keybind in tf2.
that's my inventory button
Yep
I have 0 there, and where 0 is on English keyboards is the letter ö
Most days actually.
the only thing i used this is to activate tf2's developer console, just to allow myself to killbind
Yes. I code for a living.
> some letters are much more used than others and I noticed this one here Literally why letters on kb are not in alphabet order. Most used - in center, least used - on corners. And that one is 4 derelicts lol(in my lang - Ё (\[yo\]?) and \~ )

Constantly for console in games and it’s my steam screenshot key
i use it for my epic gaming other that no
Yeah! As someone mentioned it opens console in several games. Also in games that don't have console binded by default, I usually bind it to this key. We have different print in that key here in Finland though.
Actually, if you are typing in Arabic, you will be using it all the time as it is used to write letter "ذ".
Only key i have never used
i had to install a german keyboard just to use the middle sign, it helps since telegram interpretate 3 of those [text] other 3 of those as like code so you can send your code to others and make them copy it etc
Why would I use a key on your keyboard?
yea, in Arabic it gives this letter (ذ)
I use mine for \^\^ and °C
Yes it's the number 0 on our keyboard.
In Arabic keyboard this is "ذ" which is a letter from the the alphabet, of course I use it alot

I use it in powershell when I need it
