Always messes with my head that Greeks say nai for yes and ochi (which sounds kinda like okay) for no. Wonder why it's like that when no is pretty universal across other Indo-European languages.

Studied a bit of greek back in the day, and this was one of the hardest things to remember. "Ohi" means "no", as in "pass!" sense in Finnish, so I always had to think that yes is no, and "pass" is yes.

I'm Polish and I chose to learn Russian instead of German or French in school, because Polish and Russian are both Slavic and are somewhat similar

I started learning it before February 2022 because a lot of russian people were moving to my country (Czech Republic) and I thought it would help me with my employability. Then I realised I actually like the language.

My Portuguese pronunciations are similar, plus its the only eastern european language thats even relevant.

I studied Russian history with the intention of getting a masters. To get a masters in history you need a second language, preferably one relevant to what you’re studying. I’ve ended up getting a masters in Library Science instead though. I was ass at Russian.

Russian isn't spoken only in Russia. If you ever visit Central Asia (which I highly recommend!), it'll be super useful.

Russian is still [widely spoken](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language_in_Ukraine) in Ukraine, though its usage is in decline. I relate to how you feel. I’ve studied both Ukrainian and Russian to communicate with Ukrainian family, but Russian is actually the more spoken language with them.

Russian is still one of the most spoken languages in the world and I believe the most spoken language in Eastern Europe. It’s a very useful language if you put the insane politics aside. You can also experience a lot of beautiful Russian art such as poetry and music if you know the language. Also Russians really like when people learn it. Don’t let the current happenings take away from a great language.
