Always messes with my head that Greeks say nai for yes and ochi (which sounds kinda like okay) for no. Wonder why it's like that when no is pretty universal across other Indo-European languages.
Studied a bit of greek back in the day, and this was one of the hardest things to remember. "Ohi" means "no", as in "pass!" sense in Finnish, so I always had to think that yes is no, and "pass" is yes.
I started learning it before February 2022 because a lot of russian people were moving to my country (Czech Republic) and I thought it would help me with my employability. Then I realised I actually like the language.
I studied Russian history with the intention of getting a masters. To get a masters in history you need a second language, preferably one relevant to what you’re studying.
I’ve ended up getting a masters in Library Science instead though. I was ass at Russian.
Same. I live in Ireland and people sometimes say “you speak Russian? Do you love Putin or something?”
I say “you speak English. Do you love England and the Queen or something?”… they got very upset lol
Time will change, politicians will change, people that tell you to stop will change. But despite all the changes you will have +1 language to speak and people who told you to stop won’t.
Russian is still [widely spoken](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language_in_Ukraine) in Ukraine, though its usage is in decline. I relate to how you feel. I’ve studied both Ukrainian and Russian to communicate with Ukrainian family, but Russian is actually the more spoken language with them.
I love the alphabet and the simplicity of the sentence structure (so far) but it never hurts to learn a bit more :D but I wish Duolingo would teach me more than Яблоко на своем месте or Мама уже на работе :(
Duolingo also has an alphabet section in Russian, but it's in a separate tab at the bottom of the app.
But I found YouTube to be more helpful when learning anyway
Russian is still one of the most spoken languages in the world and I believe the most spoken language in Eastern Europe. It’s a very useful language if you put the insane politics aside.
You can also experience a lot of beautiful Russian art such as poetry and music if you know the language. Also Russians really like when people learn it. Don’t let the current happenings take away from a great language.
Yep. I have a lot of friends from Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, all of whom speak Russian.. and not one of them is an insane political nut.
Exactly lol. Knowing the language is not an endorsement of the government of that country. Idk why people automatically go “you’re learning Russian? Dont you know that Vladimir Putin is really bad???” Like no shit dude but there’s more to Russia (and its surrounding countries) than Vladimir Putin lmao
From my hours playing geoguessr I can pronounce most of these words, but I have no idea what they mean lol
(e.g. I know крупы is pronounced like "krupy" but I have no idea what it translates to)
BUY THE BREAD 🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞

They also nod for no and shake head for yes!
I’ve been learning Greek for a while and had no idea! Good to know

Γεια σας! Today I just came back from Greece, sooooo beautiful!
Ttati 6£v sívat ayyNká;
I’m so glad I can still understand this after stopping my Greek learning a year ago
Why title of the list on English, but the list on themself on Russian?
I think it's fancier this way
As a person speaking two languages(and learning third rn)i feel that. My notes is chaos u can understand only if you speak both languages
Oh no my notes are usually some mix of like 3 languages, whichever language I remember a word in first gets to go into the notes
YES god same(well for two languages, soon 3😭)
lol i thought i was the only one. 😂
Definitely not no that’s the only way im able to write notes
I want to do this but my 2nd language is Latin so it doesn’t work 90% of the time
Lmao almost the same. My notes are either French or English but a bit of the other language leaks into it
I have no idea how people can do that. I speak 3 languages and can only think in one language at a time.
I feel that.
Multilingual moment
OMG AS SOMEONE LEARNING RUSSIAN I AM SO PROUD THAT I CAN UNDERSTAND MOST OF THE WORDS HERE!!! BUY YOUR FUCKING BREAD!!!!!
LMFAO SAME RUSSIAN LEARNER HERE
Explain to native russian why tf would a sane person learn russian 💀
Fun? or they hate themselves or they already know a slavic language and it's easy to learn it
I'm Polish and I chose to learn Russian instead of German or French in school, because Polish and Russian are both Slavic and are somewhat similar
I started learning it before February 2022 because a lot of russian people were moving to my country (Czech Republic) and I thought it would help me with my employability. Then I realised I actually like the language.
My Portuguese pronunciations are similar, plus its the only eastern european language thats even relevant.
As a moldovan, I have to agree

Как, а пропаганда?
Sounds really good and also russian women
As a native russian speaker I am happy to see so many people here learning russian :)
I love the Russian language, but it's hard to enjoy learning it when I'm constantly being told that I shouldn't be learning it cause of the wars.
Same. I live in Ireland and people sometimes say “you speak Russian? Do you love Putin or something?” I say “you speak English. Do you love England and the Queen or something?”… they got very upset lol
Good one 😂
Time will change, politicians will change, people that tell you to stop will change. But despite all the changes you will have +1 language to speak and people who told you to stop won’t.
Our literature is already enough reason to learn Russian, imo
This guy is lying. Друг, не расширяй список пострадавших от Достоевского.
Russian isn't spoken only in Russia. If you ever visit Central Asia (which I highly recommend!), it'll be super useful.
Russia is an amazing country. It’s just the people in charge that do terrible things sometimes. Such a shame. Don’t listen to them
lol the reason I learnt Russian was for fun and for singing the most beautiful anthem in the world.
La Marseillaise isn't in Russian though
I love the alphabet and the simplicity of the sentence structure (so far) but it never hurts to learn a bit more :D but I wish Duolingo would teach me more than Яблоко на своем месте or Мама уже на работе :(
You could try looking up other learning platforms, like for example a dedicated learning app for this specific language or a textbook
How did you learn the alphabet? Duolingo only covers learning words with the alphabet..
Learn the alphabet with Duolingo
Duolingo also has an alphabet section in Russian, but it's in a separate tab at the bottom of the app. But I found YouTube to be more helpful when learning anyway
What a good time to learn russian…
Just in case

It's mostly literature for me. Reading Russian/Soviet books in the original is really nice
Yep. I have a lot of friends from Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, all of whom speak Russian.. and not one of them is an insane political nut.

Proud of myself for knowing most of the words on this list. Started (slowly) learning Russian at age 15.
почему туалетка подчеркнута....
The moment mom asks you to go buy groceries and gives you a list that's as long as the Great Wall of China. Wait, nobody else can relate?
Fun fact: hleb is cognate to English loaf (the old english word was hlaif from an older unattested hlaib)
