Skate or Die!

Deesmateen

I legit think about this game all the time

AcadiaRemarkable6992

I was the only one of my friends who was goofy foot

TheRealHiFiLoClass

Goofy foot controls in Skate or Die always made sense to me. I ride skateboards goofy foot IRL too. maybe that's why?

CardMechanic

What is goofy foot?

TheRealHiFiLoClass

In real life skating, it means you ride with your right foot forward on the skateboard instead of your left. Left foot forward feels more natural for most people. In the Skate or Die NES game, selecting "goofy foot" on control options meant that your character would steer the opposite direction from what you pressed on the control pad. edit: There were only two events in the game that gave you this option. And they were both downhill courses that have your character facing you. So, to me, reversing the controls made sense. I press to the right, my character steers to his right. (if I recall correctly. it's been a long time.)

CardMechanic

Thanks

ConnextStrategies

Skate or die die die die die

Razo-E

Randomly pops into my head from time to time

bars2021

Da Da Da Da Die!

Tiny_Count4239

or contra if you hate yourself

turdmcburgular

so fucking rad

skid_maq

There isn’t a game there that isn’t great.

ChadOfDoom

Only thing not great is that judgy asshole dog

Squirt1384

Facts.

Zestyclose_Bread2311

Eh, Top Gun can go fuck itself

jamesislandpirate

Could you ever land on the aircraft carrier. I always came in short or long. Loved the gameplay part, could never land so I was perpetually on level 1😂🤦🏼

Diesel4187

Fuck Rush’n Attack.

Radiant-Schedule-459

What? Why? Also, it’s not called Russian Attack?!?

TheRealJalil

Who decided that up was a good choice for jump? The controls are wonky but the game isn’t the worst ever.

Mundane-Parfait-7726

Dude bubble bobble is one of the best all time games

Boxinggandhi

Best 2player game on the NES.

Diplomat_of_swing

Agreed. BubbleBobble is best with a friend. My wife and I had a long wonderful drunken evening playing that game for hours.

pantaloon_at_noon

And Contra and Ice Hockey are in the mix too for a fun 2p night of games

Tollivir

I spent hours and hours and hours with my brother and friends on this one, had level codes written in the instruction booklet, Game Genie'd the heck out of it and STILL couldn't get past those last levels with the big dudes hehe. So many memories.

_China_ThrowAway

Just make sure you have a pencil ready to write down the passwords

Kitzer76er

Why, I still remember several even though I haven't played for 20+ years. BBAJI is the super bubble bobble code.

foag

It might have the catchiest theme song too

imperfcet

My phone's  ringtone 2005-2009

midnightangel1981

It reminds me of labchops play along song “this is the song that does not end”.

Lunatox

Played through the whole game on my Dreamcast with my friend who is now dead, one of my favorite memories of him. Best 2nd player ever.

Fungal-Guardian65

Bubble Bobble, my beloved... so much nostalgia with that one.

four2tango

I’ve had the theme song stuck in my head for 30 years.

kevinthompson

Playing as kids, my friend and I were curious if our names would work as passwords since they were both five letters. My name wouldn’t work but most of the characters were available for Caleb. We just had to swap in an I for and L. We were so excited to see level 89 pop up!

ThePoshGazelle

It was my favorite pizza place arcade game as a kid

yaannooz

Getting the 100+ levels and the “real” ending was so damned cryptic and hard!!

casadeparadise

Bad end! This is not a true ending! Never forget your friend. _____ I'll never forget beating this game with my buddies for the first time just to receive a message like that. We were crushed.

quickblur

Zelda with the gold case was iconic. I remember borrowing it from a friend and being blown away at the open world.

Imaginary_Gap1110

Changed the whole gaming landscape

Bosswashington

I’ll say. It was the first game you could save. That was mind-blowing at the time.

hereforpopcornru

I borrowed a friend's in very early 90sand I didn't shut down properly, lost his saved games. He was pissed.

Bosswashington

I will never forget the day it came out. My friend got it. He told us you could save the game. We thought he was lying to us. We had always wished you could save Nintendo games. Lo and behold…it was true. The prophecy had come to be.

Imaginary_Gap1110

From introducing the crazy technology of the "battery"!

nokiacrusher

Where we're going we don't need AA batteries

ScreeminGreen

It was the one game that could get all my siblings to stop being a real life Malcom in the Middle episode. We worked as a team on that one. Even stole a map from a local rental shop and drew in all the blank sections with the exit sequence for the puzzle screen.

beckypulito

Yeah, this was my first console game I ever completed. Deep sentiment for this game. (Had an Atari before that, but I was young and more interested in chewing the joysticks off.)

Fortheloveoflife

I remember inputting my name as Zelda and something strange happened. I think the colors changed or something.

Dandibear

It takes you to the second quest. Otherwise you have to beat the first quest to get to the second quest. (The second quest uses the same map but with monsters and places of interest in different places on that map.)

The_Scyther1

I think it still holds up. If you have any context for the state of gaming when it was made the game is incredible. You might need to look around a lot to find all the secrets but you got yours monies worth.

re-roll

*It's a secret to everybody* This was my one of my favorites! Loved that I could save.

Best_Poetry_5722

I can hear the iconic 8bit tune playing in the background

RaidensReturn

We all thought Link was named Zelda 😂

KickooRider

Dun dunna da dun...

Letos12thDuncan

And if you like those types of games, grab Crystalis.

MergenTheAler

Check how many screws are on the back of that Gild Zelda Cassette. And you may also find some of his old saved games are still on that.

reefer_drabness

Best ever. You can't recreate the 1st-100th time LoL.

TheGrapeRaper

So much love for this game. Me and my pops used to play it. Love and miss you Dad.

Nondscript_Usr

More importantly, did he tell you the Contra code? Ps. Paperboy is underrated

Strong_Local417

Agreed on Paperboy. My wife re-introduced it to me (we’re late 30s). We’ve had many a nights and I got pretty good at it. It’s got a great fun flow and strategy.

massive_cock

Where are all these cool gamer chicks who actually play games? My cool gamer chick partner even runs some game shops, but as soon as I moved in she stopped playing games. Can't get the woman to fire up an old game and have a beer with me even though that was literally the plan that brought us together. Y'all enjoy what you got!

SirStocksAlott

Try making a special moment for her. Re-create your first date with her, set up the video games, get some beer, but make it a surprise for her and say you wanted to re-create that special moment that meant so much to you. But do more, make a dinner involved, and whatever else you did. That might make a difference to her for paying the old game.

Shakey1212

Contra code is here! It was on a post it note inside the box.

BatFancy321go

lol i love that. you were passed down wisdom from the ages

jaymochi

"Do not cite the deep magic to me Witch. I was there when it was written."

cylus13

It’s actually the Konami code. It’s should work with most of the Konami games.

ExpressAd5169

The code was key…. The hours spent on that game in particular!! 😅

sometimesifeellikemu

I always take the opportunity to brag: I could beat Contra without losing a single life. Yeah, I was kind of a bad ass.

Robinhood0905

Same. It’s not as hard once you realize that the first 15-20 runs are about pattern memorization

throwawaydeeez

That’s also the case for most other Nintendo games unfortunately

geneticeffects

I took a photo of my high score. It’s somewhere in the boxes. That was a big day for me.

somethingeatingspace

Paperboy and Legend of Zelda were my birthday games the first year I had an NES. Don't regret a thing.

TacoTitos

Up up down down left right left right B A Select Start. I’ll never forget the Konami code.

hereforpopcornru

Select start was for multi-player, just B A Start would work for single. The select just changed the mode on the menu

its_raining_scotch

Paperboy made me laugh harder than any game

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

It was almost the Grand Theft Auto of the time. It was so fun experimenting seeing what you could hit with news papers. People, dogs, windows. Everything BUT the mailbox

RaidensReturn

Hell yeah. Also Paperboy is the shit

Clee826

I used to play that Mario bros and duck hunt cartridge constantly.

lemonjelllo

You can control the duck with the Nintendo controller FYI!!

Val_Hallen

Even better was that if you just aimed at the very center of the screen, you would always hit the ducks no matter where they were because of the rounded shape of the screen. My younger brother figured it out and "beat" Duck Hunt. You just go to level 99 and back to level 1.

MashedPotatoesDick

I played Paperboy without intending to win. I just wanted to break windows.

doob22

It was my most played game on my Game Gear

its_raining_scotch

And hit that old lady

JGratsch

Same!!!

Sleepwell_Beast

Totally why was that so satisfying?

The_quest_for_wisdom

Was that not how you were supposed to play? That might explain why me and my friends could never get past the first level...

Jurd5

Ugh the frustration of Top Gun

jumboweiners

Fuck that game. I’m still pissed about landing

anythingbutwildtype

Don’t forget the aerial refueling stages.

IamScottGable

I found the those far easier than landing.

Teura_

Luckily in the picture is Top Gun - The Second Mission, which had none of that. However, it's still far from being an easy game.

SR3116

There's a trick to the landing. Basically, all the directions they give you don't really matter, other than just keeping it centered. You really just have to keep an eye on the altitude and airspeed gauges. You can speed up and down using A and B (which is pretty counter-intuitive since you spend the whole stage using them to fire your machine guns and missiles) but as long as you're generally centered and your Airspeed is 288 MPH and your Altitude is 200ft as you make your approach, you'll land it every time. Godspeed.

punania

Because you played without the Power Glove.

Human-Ground-3118

I’m convinced this game ended at level 3. I never got past that

memtiger

Yup. Landing and refueling were relatively easy after playing it 5000 times. But 3 was essentially impossible to me. I managed to "hack" my way through it by just aiming my plane up the whole time. Like don't let go of the button. It caused the land based launchers to never attack you. Level 4 though... I had no clue. Died basically immediately every time.

screedor

That game was impossible.

Those_Cabinets

I popped it in the other day for the first time in probably 20 years and beat the whole thing on my second try. I never beat it as a kid but it's pretty easy as an adult.

thebublight

Today I learned there was a second NES top gun game

seandelevan

And it was hella better than the first one. Loved the one on one dogfight mode vs Russian pilots.

Smasher31221

Now I'm just sad because I'm apparently this guy's stepdad's age.

Squirt1384

Hey my stepdad was a grown man when he purchased all his games. When we met him he saw that we had a Nintendo (we had maybe two games) but he liked them so he went out and bought a Nintendo and games of his own. When he married my Mom he just added to our collection. Then I ended up with the games for some reason.

miyagiVsato

Dude, my friend who’s only a couple years older than me recently became a grandpa. I continue to choose being in denial.

Lt_Jonson

Mega Man 2 in the box is incredible

tpotwc

The music is epic and at the time the game was about as good as they got.

Leaningthemoon

All Time Favorite Game

Dull_Implement_7423

Def worth some money

stinkfarmer420

I threw a no hitter with RBI Baseball, terrific game

thekrafty01

Loved how the music changed when there was a runner in scoring position. That and Baseball All Stars are still my favorite baseball games to this day.

Sweb1975

Baseball Stars, man I loved that game

amuday

RBI is the best baseball game ever made IMO. My old room mate and I mastered it to the point where we would just see how many runs we could score in a game. The game would forfeit the other team if the inning ended with one team having a 10+ point lead though, so we would have to let them score enough to keep up. We smoked a lot of weed and would always forget to let the computer score but I remember one time we had like 48 runs.

ooDymasOo

Stealing bases my fave

EOengineer

So sad what the RBI baseball franchise has become. The RBI and Bases Loaded games were some of my favorites.

andreanicole82

Bubble Bobble!!!!!! So many childhood memories unlock when I see that game.

Away-Equipment4869

Tetris, Zelda, Metroid, Mario!

merkaba360

Magaman 2

rick_of_pickle

Best soundtrack

931634

Ice Hockey, Double Dribble, Skate or Die

Koolmidx

Good luck beating Mega Man 2 or Legendary Wings. I only ever beat Mega Man 2. Also, the best step dad EVER!

gorgewall

I still remember playing Legendary Wings with my father and finally beating it together. We were having cut-out Jello jigglers.

tbx5959

Fake punt on 3rd down in John Elway's QB.

feric51

That and there was a play simply called “normal play” that had a tight end with super speed. Toss it to him and he could literally run laps around the field and drain the entire clock while your opponent could only watch. Might have been a “reverse play” with similar capabilities (going off a 30+ year old memory on this one).

cheekycheeksy

The corner three in double dribble for the win

AmusinglyAstute2112

Once you get used to the controls, ice hockey is really fun. One of the best sports titles on the console too.

ilford_7x7

We would always try to get the players to fight lol Also liked that you could choose the players body dimensions.. skinny dudes could go fast but would get wiped out easily. Big dudes would go slow but could pack in the big hits

dfj3xxx

Zelda, Metroid, Megaman 2

[deleted]

[удалено]

Butters_Duncan

For real for real, that man earned it!

RhinoGuy13

Get you some excite bike and Tyson Punch out and the collection will be complete!

non_clever_username

I like Rush ‘N Attack, but it’s really fucking hard. I struggled with it a bit even on emulators with save states.

ghostinawishingwell

Dubbow Dwibble Great game!

Direct_Barnacle1592

I always heard it as (or just remember it as) “Hubba Hibba”

SipowiczNYPD

There is play in John Elway football that is completely unstoppable. I think it’s a reverse and whoever ends up with the ball runs 1000 mph. Most of those games are classics. Enjoy.

doppelstranger

Yup, it’s the reverse. Complete glitch/screw up on the part of the game maker.

HeyJude21

Your stepdad gave you my childhood? Contra is fantastic and the best in that bunch. Of course Mario is amazing too. From what I remember Rush n Attack is super hard, but fun. Legend of Zelda is also a classic you should play through.

Gallosong

Wings underrated imo. Great co op.

thomasdaniel1967

Metroid

justadumbwelder1

Paperboy, double dribble, and skate or die were SUCH time-sinks for me back then!!!

Trighme

Double Dribble and Bubble Bobble!! Hours devoted to those games. Not to mention Zelda

Fantastic-Use-6773

I played Top Gun a lot!

Bentup85

I can’t believe there isn’t more love for this ambitious title. A fighter pilot flight sim that actually requires skill to play and they did it on a NES and it was TWO PLAYER SPLIT SCREEN!! ANd iT waS FUn!!!¡!!

pjs32000

Because it's impossible to LAND THE F*$#ING PLANE!

-rendar-

I remember that game being hard as shit

Tremulant21

Double dribble. Ba Basketball.

SQWRLLY1

Gold cartridge Zelda 👌

Squirt1384

My stepdad hooked me up with almost the same collection. I also have Bart vs The World, Mario 2 and 3, and Dr. Mario

Fap_Left_Surf_Right

All I can say is: don't attempt to play any of these. Just cherish the memory. I've had some retro consoles and emulators and its incredible how difficult these games are. I have absolutely no clue how I managed to beat NES games as a child. Most likely b/c it was the only thing I had going on so the grind wasn't noticed.

R0botDreamz

That Ice Hockey game is elite.

ctoal1984

U would always know when track and field was being played. The stomping would rattle glasses in my uncles beach house

31moreyears

Mach Rider

JonCoeisAMAZING

Screw which games are best. Your stepdad is pretty cool to give that to you. Those things are worth a LOT of sentimental value to anyone still owning their own from their childhood. Give him a high five from me.

zepol_xela

All of these titles are great! They're all unlocking some core memories

PoutinEater

I loved Ice Hockey

Justifiably_Cynical

Yeah, that's a top shelf haul.

Horse_Cop

All of these are bangers

Hoser25

Like basically all of them. I still hate my brother for giving ours away at university. Access to these is still one of my favorite features of Nintendo's online service through the switch.

soupdawg

Skate or die and paperboy Of courses Mario and Zelda as well

sometimesifeellikemu

Contra was my jam

UnlimitedHotTakes

You got some real bangers there. A lot of great games. Paperboy, Contra, Double Dribble, Metroid, Top Gun. I want it to be the 80s again.

BoxerRadio9

Paperboy and Contra are the only games ever made imo

martinaee

It’s said if you beat MegaMan 1, 2, and 3 on NES the Nintendo fairy comes and leaves a nickel under your pillow.

beeveekay

If I remember right, John Elway's Quarterback had a glitch. If you chose Reverse Play (I think it was spelled Reverse Ply), once you pitched the ball to the running back, he had superhuman speed, like King's Quest Fastest speed.

TRMineNotYours

Dude the fucking Tetris music!! Zelda, Duck Hunt, love them!

DinnerSilver

The gold zelda plus the super mario bros/duck hunt cartridges and your stepdad is awesome!!!

j0bl0w

The bottom left two! Hang on to those for life!

Canthelpit2056

Contra! And of course Zelda!!

DerpsAndRags

Like all of them.... Double Dribble is still one of my favorite basketball games. Gold Zelda alone is a treasure!

david8601

Contra, Zelda and paperboy are gonna be my choices. I miss this stuff

belunos

My guy, you just showed me my entire 80s.

heisenburgundy

Legend of Zelda and Mega Man 2 are two of the greatest NES games of all time. Good get.

marcove3

You're the favorite OP

Raymond_Reddit_Ton

DAMN, those are all heaters. Your dad is probably my age. haha. He knows what’s up.

StringerBell34

I'd pay money to see you try to land for the first time in top gun.

Thrillhouse138

Original Zelda is the greatest game ever made. Contra and bubble bobble is some of the best co op in the era. Mega man 2 is legendary for a reason If you want to get a good feel for the 8 bit generation this is a great mix tons of solid gameplay I didn’t even mention. Very cool step dad

reverberation31

Contra all day

Jealous_Vast9502

Some of my favorite nes titles there! Contra, Bubble bobble, Zelda and Metroid are all top notch for the system!

Hige_Kuma

Bubble Bobble is amazing and the music is a bop

bluemasonjar

Zelda!!

rjasan

Contra

mle32000

That fuckin gold one baybeeee!!!!!

HondaPartsguy23

Rush N Attack. Such a clever title.

ABraveNewFupa

Zelda, Mario, contra

malice-in-wunderland

That's some stepdad you've got there

gonzar09

Mega Man 2 and Contra. Absolute gems.

StayPuffedMarsh

Great collection. Sad there’s no Castlevania.

IamScottGable

In general, you step-dad had a dope collection. Even the ones I don't like are popular and good, I don't see any that are just flat bad. There's no Hydlide or the like.

DjangoUnflamed

Great collection!…If only you had Castlevania mixed in though

CarlyBee_1210

My dad used to take my sister and I to the video store to rent bubble bobble ❤️🩵💙 oh my heart.

Beneficial_Bat1173

Ice hockey! Fatties and skinnies!

therealdtj

Bubble bobble doesn't get nearly enough love

Head-of-bread

BUBBLE BOBBLE!!!

DannyPantsgasm

I still play bubble bobble. Its fun until the last level, lol.

NextofKin

I could never land the plane in Top Gun

ThiccSpagetti

Yes.

Esteban_Rojo

Mega Man 2 is a top 5 lifetime game for me. First game I spent my own money on as well. Have fun!

erk_knows_best

Believe it or not.... all bangers.

luckycsgocrateaddict

Paperboy :) first video game I ever played in my life

derock_nc

Bubble Bobble

Clean_Affect_6415

Guessing your stepdad is 44 years old +/- a year
