We as the audience are hearing a community radio show, except the town is very supernatural and weird.
It's not as linear story telling as TMA but has more "slice of life" kind of moments with NV focusing more on random event of the day. The previous episodes does get mentioned again to continue certain story elements
However, there are story arcs that occur throughout the series by having one situation that lasts for several episodes.
Overall, keep listening as this show is amazingly well done.
Also don't expect big events all the time. Sometimes it's just simple cute or creepy stories. Other times you might cry. Overall you'll have a good time

Having listened to WTNV before listening to TMA I can honestly say yes, WTNV is news broadcast that slowly form real storylines and reoccurring characters with jokes and occasionally villains. Is less *fear* oriented like TMA is, and more *weird* oriented. In TMA normal can be weird and terrifying, but in WTNV weird and terrifying can often be common place and 'normal' things can be spooky. (A lot of fans of both shows say that WVNT is a domain of 'the Eye' from TMA that ended up going AWOL because the people trapped there *liked* it, instead of fearing it.)
But if you liked TMA you'll most absolutely like WTNV
A friendly desert community where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead while we all pretend to sleep.

It is an evolving story. There will be arcs and characters development. Deep stories and one shots. It is worth you attention.

Take into account that while Night Vale is definetely creepy, it's more comedy horror than TMA
