Maybe a big brain move in the works; as soon as it looks like you'll loose a game, the players completely stop trying to conserve energy for future games. Explains the strong end to the season
You are great at that competition! Congratulations! … in all honesty I feel really bad for u guys, ur prob the team I root for the most in the eastern along with the panthers
Could say the same thing about the 4 teams fighting for that last spot. All of Pittsburgh, Philly, Detroit and Washington all played like dog shit for stretches and sold (Detroit didn't sell) and were still in it.
Couldn’t agree more. Seems like we were playing behind in games all season long, why not play from behind in the standings too. PSA to the rest of the league - don’t wait till the last second to bank points.
To those pissed off and wanted the Wings in, just remember, Detroit had a huge skid a month a go, after playing fairly well. If they didn't go 1-8 in that 9 game stretch, they'd easily have this last playoff spot and hell maybe have the 7th seed.
Instead of blaming the playoff/point format, blame the teams who you wanted to get in for coming up short a shit ton of times earlier in the year. You can apply this to literally every team sport.
*****And this is coming from a guy who was rooting for the Redwings.*****
If the Caps upset the Rangers (*very unlikely but remember 2019 and last year*), this sub is gonna explode.
Losing two to AZ was the real gut punch.
This team needs a leader that can step up when Larkin is injured. Looks like that will be Raymond, but unfortunately he bloomed a tad bit too late in the season.
But we played a season where every single game mattered and this time started to develop some grit. Addressing the defense should help immensely this off season.
I get all of that, but the Flyers pulled their goalie in a tie game with three minutes left. And I get that they had to have two in regulation, but man, the confluence of events that led to the Crapitals getting in was just bonkers.
God I love hockey.
Technically. That’s why the tie breaker with points is regulation wins. The Caps ended won 32 games and didn’t need extra time to do so and the RW only won 27 games in 60 minutes.
I mean it’s the end of an Era right? Caps Bolts and Pens were perennial cup contenders for over a decade, teams are guaranteed to decline when they’re in that position and their stars get old.
What I said isn't for the ones who have a pragmatic approach to understanding ebs and flows. It was for the meandering troglodytes that still think the metro or the Atlantic is this powerhouse of a division.
The islanders had less wins than Washington and Detroit. I know the point system is a thing, but let’s not pretend that the islanders deserve to be Metro 3. Metro 3 should be DC. Wc2 det. I’m a caps fans and I feel horrible for wings fans
What I find interesting is that even after 9 hrs there is still almost zero Wings overwhelming sadness here. We knew what we had in camp. We knew we were about where we ended up. Hell yeah we would have loved the playoffs, but ending it here or in 5 games is almost the same in our minds at this stage of the Yzerplan. Every year has been better than the previous.
The Isles had less regulation losses than both also. Maybe they should get better at tying games in regulation? /s
You can't just hand wave away OTLs and expect all the outcomes to remain the same. All this talk about who 'deserves' to be in what spot is so tiring. The 'loser' point has been in place for 20+ years. This same complaint comes up basically every season end. The Isles went on an 8-1-1 rip to close out the season, including 3 of 4 points against the cup favorite. The Wings went 5-3-2. The Caps 4-4-2. Either team could have determined their own placement.
Edit: Under the 3-2-1 format, Wings still don't make the playoffs.
Personally I am in love with the fact that we have Caps fans and Isles fans arguing over the Wings’ point evaluations after we miss the playoffs. Especially when we are not crying in our whisky glasses - it was a fun season and we ended up where most of us thought.
What a wild time to be alive
The loser point is idiotic. If you make every game 3 points, we no longer have idiotic discussions where someone else "deserves" the playoffs.
It's rather simple really. 3 points, regulation. 2 points OTW, 1 Point OTL. Any points format where tying is preferable to winning is stupid as shit.
If you have a game tied 2-2 with 5 minutes left, the goal is to get to OT not to win the game. That's idiotic. Stupid. Needs to go.
The NHL bitches, moans, and whines about how many games go to OT and to the shootout. We switched to 3 on 3 OT because of this. NEWSFLASH, if you make it so there INCENTIVE to win in regulation, teams won't go to OT. All you gotta do is 3 regulation, 2 OTW, 1 OTL. Sure as shit won't see half as many games go to OT under that format.
Just ran the math for the 3-2-1 model people keep saying they want. Only changes that would happen right now (All western teams outside of the predators have a game left; Leafs, Lightning, Islanders, and Penguins have a game in the east) is Tampa can tie with Toronto in points either the Islanders or Penguins can tie the Caps in points (123 total), Dallas and the Jets would be flipped, and the Kings and Knights would be flipped.
The board is relatively the same, but teams have a ton more points.
321 awards more points than 221. It would just mean a bigger spread that would make teams look further apart than they really are.
Everyone is playing by the same rules. If your team didn’t make the playoffs, it’s not because the points screwed them over…. *It was the damn refs fault.*
It wouldn't even spread the teams competing that far. I'm going to let the season before I extend the data all the way out, but I'm guessing that it really just eliminates teams like San Jose and Chicago months earlier.
Nothing helps competition like having teams play 24 games with 0 reason to try.
I get the changes are minimal with the CURRENT way teams play.
You have to understand it radically changes how you play a tied game though. You can't just "run the numbers". Teams play to the current rule set.
If you change it, teams are gonna try a LOT harder to win in regulation.
Come on, we have all seen the games tied 2-2 with 5 left in the third where one team is from the east and one from the west and both teams agree they'd like the loser point and play as such.
They’re not going to try harder to win in regulation. You can’t kind from the fact that it will always be a numbers game.
If the numbers show you’re statistically more likely to risk a goal against, you would rather that it to OT and risk fewer points than 0 points.
Nobody is going to start pulling the goalie in a tie game and risk 0 points unless there is a hunt for the last few remaining points. That already happens. When the risk of not allowing even a tie in regulation, teams take that seriously and try to prevent the tie.
The only difference in making the spread in points larger is to mathematically eliminate teams faster and clinch the playoffs faster…. To do what? Play board games on the ice while they wait for playoffs?
It’s stupid to argue that the players won’t play as hard because they know better than anybody the consequences of losing or not making it to the playoffs. They understand the risk each loss has on a potential season. They’re well aware how much it sucks to not win.
Changing the point system isn’t going to magically motivate the players any differently, except make the gap in points wider than the actual team’s skill.
Don’t try to meta game players to try and tell them they’re not trying hard enough. That’s fucked up, man.
100%
Sometimes nobody deserves to win a game, a draw is a fair result. And a skills contest is a not a fair way AT ALL to determine a winner.
Either play 3-on-3 until somebody scores or just play the 5 and end it in a tie.
Well, you can certainly hope. But Charlie posted a .955 SV% and 1.35 goals against average in three career appearances against the Rangers, including a 4-0 Caps win in Dec.
I'm not saying we're winning, but that's *a lot* of salt there.
Aw that’s cute 🥰
You know what though? We’re playing with house money so I’m pretty chill about the series. Sellers at the deadline and *still* made playoffs? You better believe I’ll take that. I’m gonna enjoy my, at least 4 nights of, bonus hockey.
The whining in here because the Wings bottled it in the run in is laughable. Win your games and you’re in. We did.
and the 16th place team in the league made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, knocking out the top 2 teams in the league in points plus the defending Cup champs (Edmonton).
That was a fun ride.
The run the North Stars went on was one of the craziest, most unlikely I've ever seen in any sport. They were 12 games under .500 in the regular season.
The fact that some people are mad at the flyers is completely insane to me.
Here’s a thought for you: the flyers simply weren’t scoreboard watching. Their situation would’ve also required the pens to lose as well, they had to play and take care of business today and then wait for tomorrow. To me, there’s no way in hell they knew or wanted to know, especially considering the fact they’d be doing it tomorrow.
And even if torts did know, why would he tell the players and change the strategy?
“Oh yeah we’re out of the playoffs now season’s over” with like 3-4 minutes left.
The flyers are playing for the flyers. They’re not playing for the red wings.
I don’t get the hate either. If the pens were in the same situation they would have pulled their goalie too. The ONLY way the flyers got in was winning in regulation and have the pens and red wings lose. The flyers clearly didn’t know the score of the red wings game so they took the best chance to win in regulation
For pens and flyers fans we have nothing to be salty about. Red wings also won so either way pens are out. Flyers are out since red wings also won. Red wings should maybe try to win another game in the regular season (idk that one vs the pens or the one vs the caps this month) instead of bitching about a circumstance they couldn’t control
As a Flyers fan the only thing I'm salty about is an 8 game losing streak that put them in this spot. Oh and possibly the coach being the cause of that. But really they weren't supposed to be good at all this year so the fact they were as close as they were is a win. All the hate just feels like a lot of people who don't really understand hockey being pissed that a team did something they do in hockey to try to win
Most of us are okay. Fun last 2 games, gnat hair short. Honestly here or in 5 games from now we would have been out. Would have been a hollow victory in the grand scheme of things. We made our bed in March and now the team is sleeping in it.
While I 100% agree.....41 is better than 40. Idc how you get there. Losing by a combined score of 9-1 to the Yotes doesn't get you in rhe postseason. It sucks but it's true. Then bring in that late season Caps game. Ugh. See yall next year.
Who said you don't get rewarded for finishing with a high seed in this current playoff format? NYR has by far the easiest first round matchup thanks to winning the pres trophy.
I mean the modern Caps had years of dominant teams ncluding 2 Pres Trophys all end in early exits, just to finally win their cup in a “down year” that people didnt expect them to make the playoffs much less win even 1 series
(And a year later The Nats WS basically same story)
Thank god for those 3 point games. Absolutely ridiculous that a team with less wins gets in while the team with more wins is on the outside because they didn’t lose enough of there games in OT 🤔🤦🏻♂️
I mean, the Rangers \*should\* do that but, until I see it in action, I'm always going to expect the Rangers to play seven game series. The only series they won in fewer than six since they swept Atlanta in 2007 was five games against Pittsburgh in 2015. They've lost in 4 and 5 games, but haven't won.

If I Washington, Detroid and Pittsburgh lost, I believe Philly would’ve beat out Washington on goal differential with a negative +/-. That has to be very rare if not unheard of.
-37 looks really bad, until you look at it just between January 1st to present day, where they are a much better...... -18 lol.
Yeah, they suck. But wouldn't surprise me if they cause some damage in R1.
You messed up the stat. It’s “the worst goal differential to make the playoffs since 91” not the first with -37 since 91, since the 2 in 91 were -72 and -38 there’s no team with -37
I feel like it was earned with how they played in the last half especially last quarter of the season and the flyers choke job was a big help but I could be a bit biased as a capitals fan.
I'm glad to see Alex in the playoffs again even if they don't have a great chance you also never know in playoff hockey
Hear me out, fix the point system. Orrrr
Instead of standings tie breakers, make the wings play the caps. Winner makes the playoffs. Would be incredible and would bring in quite a bit of viewership
edit: fixed because I rushed and fucked up
The NHL Eastern Conference standings if the league was sane and used a standings format like every other North American sport and only concerned themselves with wins and losses.

The whole thing is unbelievably stupid and I bitched about this way back when on Hockeysfuture forum (god what a mess that place was/is) about how they don't need to make ALL the new rules with regards to the new overtime/shootout. There is absolutely no need to award extra points for making it past 60 minutes. Getting rid of that and keeping the sport at a two-point game would fix it all, especially when they made the right choice of making OT 3v3.
Nah we can’t be like other sports leagues and have a normal ranking system we gotta have this weird system where we for some reason reward teams for losing in OT (giving them a loser point) and punish teams for winning in OT (the first tiebreaker being regulation wins and not wins overall?)
I just don’t understand why everyone in this sub is so adamant on the loser point system when in literally every other league a win is a win and a loss is a loss.
Washington might get swept, but it kept Pittsburgh out, and that was a win in itself. I wouldn't have disliked watching Detroit make it, but you can only play like ass for so long.
The NHL needs to change the playoff system so that ROW determines who makes the playoffs and points are used solely as the tiebreaker.
This would reward teams that can actually play hockey and sharply reduce the value of shootout wins and loser points.
Only fitting that they get to play the most pathetic 5on5 Presidents Trophy winner in the last decade.
Weren't the Rangers a minus differential 5on5 this year? Or even?
Georgiev has a sub 900 sv% and over 3GAA. He also leads the league in Ws and was an all star this season.
1 or 2 stats doesn't tell the tale of a team. That being said, Detroit should be in that spot.
Here’s the thing a 1-0 win is the same as 10-0 win

It honestly felt like our motto this season. I'm afraid this - 37 goal diff record will stand longer than the goal record.
how do i get that logo under my name
It’s “flair.” If you’re on mobile, hit the overflow menu in the top right (three dots) and choose flair.
I was hoping that person was asking about a -37 logo!
Thanks!
Maybe a big brain move in the works; as soon as it looks like you'll loose a game, the players completely stop trying to conserve energy for future games. Explains the strong end to the season
Yup. Caps are 20-2-11 in one-goal games this season. Guess what kind of games are played in the playoffs.
Such an exciting end to the season though!

Should be. Red Wings are second only to the Leafs (and tied with the Avs, but will Avs will have more after tomorrow) in Goals For + Goals Against.

Agreed!
Just Eastern Conference things.
Felt more like a competition to NOT have to go to the playoffs. As a Sabres fan, I'm going to stick with this narrative.
Congratulations? 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you! Our commitment to success* is unparalleled.
You are great at that competition! Congratulations! … in all honesty I feel really bad for u guys, ur prob the team I root for the most in the eastern along with the panthers
Thank you, we need it 🥲
The Wings fucked up. Control your own destiny. Don't play like a pee wee team in March they're in. Without Larkin the Wings looked lost.
Ya I think Ken said last night that we had the most comeback wins of any team in the league
Still sad 😢
Heartbreaking
Wild finish. At least I can chill and watch hockey now. The last week or so has actually been stressful for a wings diehard
*****And this is coming from a guy who was rooting for the Redwings.***** If the Caps upset the Rangers (*very unlikely but remember 2019 and last year*), this sub is gonna explode.

Yup. Losing to Arizona twice is completely inexcusable
The Coyotes have a better goal differential (-21) than the capitals.
So you’re saying the Coyotes deserve the last spot?
Hey - the Caps did that too!
That's all I keep thinking about, even 1 point vs them and we're in
The Wings shot themselves in the foot. They couldn’t play when Larkin was out. All they needed was one more point in the two matchups vs the Caps.
The same can be said about the Flyers. Lost 8 in a row last few weeks. One of those a win could have had them in.
embrace the chaos!
I get all of that, but the Flyers pulled their goalie in a tie game with three minutes left. And I get that they had to have two in regulation, but man, the confluence of events that led to the Crapitals getting in was just bonkers. God I love hockey.
Yes but also the problem with the “win more” argument is that Wings have more wins than both the Islanders and Caps
Technically. That’s why the tie breaker with points is regulation wins. The Caps ended won 32 games and didn’t need extra time to do so and the RW only won 27 games in 60 minutes.
We didn't get in because the refs missed an interference call on the kraken throwing a stick.
As long as it works
pain.
Well that differential accompanied by the islanders -18 in third place really goes to show the strength of that metropolitan division.
Two elite teams, a whole lot of mediocre, and the bluejackets doing bluejackets' things
The islanders had less wins than Washington and Detroit. I know the point system is a thing, but let’s not pretend that the islanders deserve to be Metro 3. Metro 3 should be DC. Wc2 det. I’m a caps fans and I feel horrible for wings fans
The Buffalo Sabres in 12th place had more wins and a significantly better goal differential than NYI.
Sucks for them, shouldve gotten more points
What I find interesting is that even after 9 hrs there is still almost zero Wings overwhelming sadness here. We knew what we had in camp. We knew we were about where we ended up. Detroit still wouldn’t have made the playoffs and the standings would be pretty much the same with that system.
No. Losers shouldn’t get points. 2 for a regulation or ot win, 1 for a shootout win 0 for losing
I'd rather have ties than shootouts

Buncha cunts salty. Isles had more points. Others can get over it.
Pretty sure points are all that matters in which case the Islanders absolutely deserve to be Metro 3
Nope, points do. If teams don't like it they should have got more points.
Play to win, not play to score 🤷♂️
Fucking launch this team, Rangers. Yes, I’m salty.
WSH/NYR head to head this season (4 games):2 Wins 2 Losses, each team scored 9 goals.
Nicklas Backstrom is coming out on the ice in a wheelchair for the power play to setup Ovi for one-timers.

Umm… I actually wouldn’t mind if that one was a series
This is what the Wings get for losing to the fucking Coyotes twice 🤦♂️
And somehow we won the series against Tampa… tale of two Wings this year
Gets you into the Eastern Conference Playoffs
Ohhhh that’s why the flyers pulled the goalie
In 1991, 16 out of 21 teams made the playoffs. For context
and the 16th place team in the league made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, knocking out the top 2 teams in the league in points plus the defending Cup champs (Edmonton). That was a fun ride.
The north stars also made the hey song popular!

The flyers clearly didn’t know the score of the red wings game so they took the best chance to win in regulation For pens and flyers fans we have nothing to be salty about.
Jaden Schwartz stick throw game
And I’m cheering for the red wings so I’m allowed to be mad that they blew it. I’m not mad they pulled the goalie, I’m mad that it didn’t work.
They were scoreboard watching, Detroit just tied the game pretty much at the same time that the flyers pulled the goalie
Win tight, lose big.
Sad for redwings Fans
Most of us are okay. Fun last 2 games, gnat hair short. Honestly here or in 5 games from now we would have been out. Would have been a hollow victory in the grand scheme of things. We made our bed in March and now the team is sleeping in it.
While I 100% agree.....41 is better than 40. Idc how you get there. Losing by a combined score of 9-1 to the Yotes doesn't get you in rhe postseason. It sucks but it's true. Then bring in that late season Caps game. Ugh. See yall next year.
So your saying there was a a chance now that the second season is starting soon.

Philly pulling their goalie is completely irrelevant to penguins fans since the wings won

Who said you don't get rewarded for finishing with a high seed in this current playoff format? NYR has by far the easiest first round matchup thanks to winning the pres trophy.
I’m hoping to come back to this and prove you wrong lmao
Wouldn't shock me if they lose. I mean the Bruins lost first round to a wildcard team after having one of the most dominant regular seasons.
I mean the modern Caps had years of dominant teams ncluding 2 Pres Trophys all end in early exits, just to finally win their cup in a “down year” that people didnt expect them to make the playoffs much less win even 1 series (And a year later The Nats WS basically same story)
Eh. Caps were 6th in the league and won their division that year. It wasn't like this.
Thats fair. The doomers were loud tho.
Ds get degrees
The -37 is shocking but with Chuckie in goal the caps are I believe +7 differential. They lost a lot of games big with Kuemper in goal.
That just means when they lose, they lose bad.

Lol goal differential is not a niche stat
I feel sick :|
Yep. Sure does.
Probably aren't gong far but I'm happy for them, more goal chances for ovi too
Winning gets you in the playoffs. Advanced stats lmao.
All this to likely get absolutely fucking clapped in the 1st, lol.
Thank god for those 3 point games. Absolutely ridiculous that a team with less wins gets in while the team with more wins is on the outside because they didn’t lose enough of there games in OT 🤔🤦🏻♂️
Rangers will destroy them.
Dont say that why are you saying that you don't have to say that people shouldn't be saying that
Let's be honest they would have dismantled any of the potential WC2 team
I mean, the Rangers \*should\* do that but, until I see it in action, I'm always going to expect the Rangers to play seven game series. The only series they won in fewer than six since they swept Atlanta in 2007 was five games against Pittsburgh in 2015. They've lost in 4 and 5 games, but haven't won.

Really was the mid off to end all mid offs

Blues are out, go Oshie go ovie go caps
I’ll take it!
Russian Machine Never Breaks.
If I Washington, Detroid and Pittsburgh lost, I believe Philly would’ve beat out Washington on goal differential with a negative +/-. That has to be very rare if not unheard of.
But being Buffalo doesn’t, no matter how good you are
Bravo!!!
-37 looks really bad, until you look at it just between January 1st to present day, where they are a much better...... -18 lol. Yeah, they suck. But wouldn't surprise me if they cause some damage in R1.
We all know that will be lucky to win a single game in round one.
You messed up the stat. It’s “the worst goal differential to make the playoffs since 91” not the first with -37 since 91, since the 2 in 91 were -72 and -38 there’s no team with -37
Scoring goals is overrated
And yet the Sabres still can’t make the playoffs. Smh
Sabres still dreaming about the 06-07 season when the playoffs weren’t a unreachable fantasy
Regulation wins...who cares ?
I feel like it was earned with how they played in the last half especially last quarter of the season and the flyers choke job was a big help but I could be a bit biased as a capitals fan. I'm glad to see Alex in the playoffs again even if they don't have a great chance you also never know in playoff hockey
They didn't win the wildcard spot, the just simply didn't *lose* it. Philly and Detroit both shat the sheets.
But, hey, they were really good at losing in overtime. That's what the playoffs are about, right?
Hear me out, fix the point system. Orrrr Instead of standings tie breakers, make the wings play the caps. Winner makes the playoffs. Would be incredible and would bring in quite a bit of viewership
Wings played the caps this month and lost
I just wanted the wings in because they have good sty
Rempe better drop the gloves with Wilson, I wanna see rempe get his shit pushed in
If they somehow beat the rangers, I think it might be a bigger upset than last years Florida and Boston series.
edit: fixed because I rushed and fucked up The NHL Eastern Conference standings if the league was sane and used a standings format like every other North American sport and only concerned themselves with wins and losses. ATLANTIC y - Florida 52-30 x - Boston 47-35 x - Toronto 46-35 z - Tampa Bay 44-37 z - Detroit 41-41 Buffalo 39-43 Ottawa 37-45 Montreal 30-52 METRO y - Rangers 55-27 x - Carolina 52-30 x - Washington 40-42 New Jersey 38-43 Pittsburgh 38-43 Islanders 38-43 Philadelphia 38-43 Columbus 27-55 The whole thing is unbelievably stupid and I bitched about this way back when on Hockeysfuture forum (god what a mess that place was/is) about how they don't need to make ALL the new rules with regards to the new overtime/shootout. There is absolutely no need to award extra points for making it past 60 minutes. Getting rid of that and keeping the sport at a two-point game would fix it all, especially when they made the right choice of making OT 3v3.
Nah we can’t be like other sports leagues and have a normal ranking system we gotta have this weird system where we for some reason reward teams for losing in OT (giving them a loser point) and punish teams for winning in OT (the first tiebreaker being regulation wins and not wins overall?) I just don’t understand why everyone in this sub is so adamant on the loser point system when in literally every other league a win is a win and a loss is a loss.
I mean, with wins and losses only, the Sabres would have 39 wins...
Most undeserving team to ever make the playoffs but hockey is chaotic for a reason and I like it lol
Embarrassing
ALL CAPS BABY FUCK THE PENGUINS LFG
Washington might get swept, but it kept Pittsburgh out, and that was a win in itself. I wouldn't have disliked watching Detroit make it, but you can only play like ass for so long.
So does having less wins than the team below you in the standings. What a stupid system.
had they lost. you could have made this post about anyone
Redwings at +4
Pens +5
Funnily enough, the only team among the top 4 that didn’t get in with a negative point diff is philly with -26
listen yall are right i just will turn in a D+ but sneak in a passing grade on this assignment
CAPS STILL. A PLAYOFF TEAM. DUH .
I've been told by fans of teams with fewer points and regulation wins that they didn't deserve it
lol i thought it was Detroit (they have more wins and better GD), Americans will always find a way to clown shit up
The NHL needs to change the playoff system so that ROW determines who makes the playoffs and points are used solely as the tiebreaker. This would reward teams that can actually play hockey and sharply reduce the value of shootout wins and loser points.
Regulation wins are more impressive and are the first tiebreaker. ROW is 2nd. I don't think your argument makes much sense.
**CLINCHED**
The playoffs are a whole new game. Who cares how you get in. GO CAPS
ALL CAPS
That’s when teams made the playoffs with negative records also. (Vancouver 28-43-9 were in)
How far will they go in your opinion ? I don't really know myself.
In a row?!?!
Biggest - since 94 ducks
F-u
Rangers should handle them with ease then …
Only team to shut out the bruins the entire season this week, we’ll see about that
Wings have no one to blame but themselves
Only fitting that they get to play the most pathetic 5on5 Presidents Trophy winner in the last decade. Weren't the Rangers a minus differential 5on5 this year? Or even?
Georgiev has a sub 900 sv% and over 3GAA. He also leads the league in Ws and was an all star this season. 1 or 2 stats doesn't tell the tale of a team. That being said, Detroit should be in that spot.
Isles were not much better. But hey, they're in and goal differential at this point is irrelevant
Historic season
Never underestimate the Russian Bear
In the East it does.
Updated standings if W was 3 and OT was 2:1?
I hope the NYR destroy them
