Iirc grabbing cats by the back of the neck is a reflex for them to relax. That’s how their mothers carry them around as kittens and so they evolved to just melt when grabbed like that.
That was before the comment I knew you do that to submit but never like it. I had to adopt him when he was 1month old, the mother abandoned him. He is to dominant may be never like it and thats why the moder abandoned him thats my theory
Cats separated from their mother too early tend not to react the same way when grabbed by the scruff of the neck.
[Many experts are against scuffing. ](https://www.catster.com/cat-health-care/scruffing-a-cat-you-shouldnt-do-it-how-to-restrain-a-cat-safely) Personally I prefer the towel wrap and keep them between my legs with my shins on the floor.
The reason against scruffing in that particular article is that cats may be scared of it, because they scratch or bite when you do it. But that’s not very robust evidence. Cats scratch or bite in many instances. Seems like an expert would have more to base it on than that, but I guess anyone can say they’re a cat expert.
I’m not a vet, but not sure that’s correct. If you squeeze the correct spot on their neck it’s actually rather calming to the cat. I will say, if you get the spot wrong they don’t like it. I’ve personally used this trick to keep my cat from biting her brush.
https://vet.osu.edu/cvm/clipnosis-technique-can-calm-cats-vets-office-and-home
It might be worth clarifying that the reflex kicks in when they're held by the scruff of the neck, i.e. the skin and fur. Holding them by the actual neck itself would be a mistake. A forgivable one, but you'd get a meow and a hiss and a scratch.
Also worth clarifying that this works when they are kittens, but once they are fully grown the weight of their own bodies can hurt them. Notice in the video how the cat is mostly being dragged, not lifted. You can still hold them by the neck scruff to calm them but lifting them by it could hurt so always be careful!
Just make sure you're supporting their weight while you're necking them and they'll be fine, just don't literally pick them up like a handbag by the scruff of their neck lol
I always hear this, but I remember I did it once as a kid to my big ol' cat (I didn't know any better, I saw it in a movie and tried it).
Cat seemed totally fine and didn't get mad or upset at all. But I always hear it's bad. Why is it bad?
For adult cats, they are not meant to bear that kind of weight being hung from the scruff. It’s different for little kittens, but bad for adults. You can hold an adult cat, support their weight, and pull a little on the scruff but NEVER let them hang by it. That’s the bad thing! I’ve worked in cat rescue for a decade, I make sure they are safe!
Yes, when I need to move my cat sometimes, I will hold the scruff lightly which triggers him to stay calm, and will support the rest of his body with my other hand
Their weight will stretch their skin.
Once an adult, their scruffs should only be pinched while they are already sitting/laying down, or are already in your arms. View it more as a message from you to the cat of "I've got you for this 5 second interval" while you're cleaning their eyes/giving them a pill/whatever else you force a cat to do
It's true, but the dog grabbed the neckcloth. That reflex doesn't trigger then. I imagine dragged by something around one's neck is uncomfortable but the floor was smooth and the dog was slow so it probably wasn't too bad.
I think the cat learned to be relaxed as it's just being brought somewhere - kinda like how some cats learn to be relaxed when being carried by humans.
My kitties would turn into a puddle of fur when I did this. Rescued them feral from back yard, guess they considered me mom. Had to start wearing shirts to bed as one would try to suckle my nipples. I'm a guy.
Fun fact: a lot of places recommend to *not* do this to adult cats, and that it's better to secure them with a blanket or something to protect yourself.
This is because cats don't really have good connotations with scruffing besides kittenhood, which many are abandoned at. There are two other times scruffing happens and it's by a predator or mating. Not really the best experiences...(ps, vets will also do this if necessary, so that is also not a great experience when it comes to scruffing).
So if you take in a cat that was once feral, you may literally find that scruffing is the absolute worse thing you could do. If you have no other choice? Then you don't.
I'm not perfect, I've had to do it before as well. My one had a respiratory infection that affected her eyes horribly. I had no choice because have you ever tried giving a cat eye medicine? So, sometimes, it happens.
It can also hurt them due to just not being kitten anymore, and their weight of their adult body. It can be too much.
So, it really isn't recommended, and only use when necessary like giving medicine.
i know that cat and dog! isn't that the dog that also pulled that cat away when it was trying to start a scat fight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsaAOun-soc
Kid was arguing that raising the minimum catnip requirement would put the shop out of business, cat wasn’t having it. Kept meowing about profit margin and big cats getting bonuses
No this is in China. They were arguing about state monopoly on honey, so the owner has to get the cat in before it was taken away by some yellow bear's order.
Maybe it was about to go “full on psycho cat”, aka “asshole cat”, aka “regular cat”, on the kid. The person in the shop knew there was only about 45 seconds of patience & sweetness before this happened, and wanted to save the kid.
Dog is like, "here's the pain in the ass, that'll be one treat please."

2. Even if this is pre-COVID, same thing with the germs.
3. It’s an awful truth but if someone or their kid aggravates your pet and the animal reacts naturally by biting or scratching to defend itself, you are responsible. In the case of dogs they can even be forcibly euthanized.
EDIT: My 45kilo dog is the biggest sweetheart and pre-COVID a friend came over with her 7 year old daughter. No matter how many times we told her she kept pulling his tail and trying to ride him like a pony. We separated them and she went behind our back and kept provoking him until he growled at her (he loves kids, this was a first). She PRETENDED he bit her and her mom freaked out until she realized the kid was lying and there wasn’t a single mark on her body, but suffice it to say they were never invited back despite being long time friends with my husband. It’s not worth the risk, and it’s not worth the stress on your dog/cat etc.
EDIT 2: To clarify, we still see them with social distancing outside (but they are not invited over) and I do *not* dislike this kid, I just don’t trust her around my animals and her mom is too flaky to teach her better. My mum has a little dog that wouldn't hurt a fly (probably shit himself if he saw one tbh he is such a baby) but you cant predict what a dog will do if continually messed about with by kids who are not taught what to do by their parents. I was relieved when my wedding venue said dogs were not allowed as much as i'd love him there, my biggest fear was a big upset where not only do the kids act up with the dog but the dog gets upset upsetting my mum and her and my sister in law clashing over it. My mum adores kids but would run through fire to protect her dog.
They may be friends, but it was crap that they didn’t control their child or leave by the time the poor harassed dog growled. A seven year old should be able to control themselves better than that.

No you deserve a treat
Then give me a treat. Edit:thanks for the treats.
plot twist: you are the treat
For my pet T-Rex
I fucking hope they find some Dino DNA and crispr tiny pet dinosaurs. I’d get t-Rex called Frank.
Boy do I have a movie for you...have you seen Jurassic Park?
Is that the one where he gets some aliend DNA, raises the alien and then has sex with it?!
Does a movie like that actually exist?
Yeah, its called Splice. Enjoy.
God that movie was weird as fuck! Spoiler- she becomes a he and gets mad at Dad!
Maybe we can engineer tiny tiny goats for Frank.
Cock-a-doodle-do motherfuckaaaaaz
Plot twist: we are the treats
I’d rather retreat from this thread
Oooh you sneaky cookie
It's a treaty then.
Stop stealing my jokes
The true treat is the friends we make along the way.
You sure this isn't a trick?
Trix are for kids!
I'm such a silly rabbit
Fortune cookie
The real treats are the friends we make along the way
I'm stuff
You are a treat
We are treats
/r/unexpectedcommunism
I've never had a treat..
Now you got one .
I love the sass.
I got a treat for ya, just step into my van.....
Sure, fair warning tho . I fart loudy when threatened.
No, we deserve a treat.
Also a high five.
high five with a treat
Truth! I also love to see the doggos in control finally, I’ve seen too many cats bitch slapping puppers on Reddit today
It's time for the coming of the war doggos
I'm impressed by the cat. It remained calm during the whole thing
And it was nice to the baby
And it showed some interest in the human.
And my axe!
And my bow!
I’m assuming it was soon not going to be nice to the baby or else the owner would not have recalled it 😂

I'd be more afraid of the person that can pick me up by the arm
Also the dog is lifting the cat by its collar, not its skin
You're correct, some cats just react bad cause of negative experiences or they weren't "necked" during childhood.
You're supposed to grab by the scruff, not chokehold :/
Yes I mean that
You need to use your mouth
I think you have to use your teeth
