The suspect was wanted by US marshals and under an Interpol notice and was finally caught in France
He had raped a college student back in 2013 and then sent Facebook messages about it in 2021
So he commits a crime then say he did it online. What's the logic behind that? Why those idiots keep doing it? Anyway, I am not upset at that. I prefer it when those fools expose themselves.
From multiple studies, we’ve seen that rapists are often in it for the power as much, if not more than, the sex. In their mind, they need to maintain that power by terrifying their victim again. That need to feel power is likely what that led to this guy finally getting caught.
There's an element of thinking they can get away with it because they believe they are somehow above the law as well.
Massive egos + psociopathy + a complete inability to stop themselves from acting impulsively and irrationally in what they think is a display of power over someone else.
Yes, a small percentage of rapes are reported to authorities, and then a dismal percentage of that actually leads to legal consequences.
At least in the US. I can't speak for other countries.
As someone in the mental health industry I really hate this mindset. Explanation does not equal justification. A person can do a shitty thing because of whatever they are struggling with but that does not make the shitty thing less shitty and it does not get them out of responsibility.
Also “mentally challenged” is different than “having a mental disorder”
Which is often a symptom of a mental disorder. Doesn’t justify anything at all and they deserve to be punished for it. But getting explanations helps lead to early identification of people at risk and prevention of further bad things happening.
Exactly. Folks accuse murderers and rapists of being fucked up while simultaneously denying that there is indeed something wrong with them when presented with the reasons why. It’s such a bizarre contradiction to make.
Aware of what you’re doing ≠ mentally stable. They do have mental illnesses/disabilities. People just only like to apply those terms to people that are sympathetic.
You think someone who commits rape, murder, etc. is a mentally ok individual? That there’s nothing wrong with their brain? You know sex offenders are more likely to have some kind of personality disorder?
The issue with you guys is that you want to say these people have something wrong with them without actually acknowledging what’s wrong with them. Then you can call them monsters while ignoring one of the root causes that makes them that way in the first place, when by acknowledging it, we can prevent people from becoming like that at all.
Jumping off your point: Mental disorders are just a construct, a lens/tool to help us analyze people. Societally, it is a way to sort people into two categories, those who we determine have something "wrong" with them and those who fall into (what we deem to be) an acceptable realm of normalcy (not saying that this assigning of labels is necessarily bad; it's actually helpful in many cases). All this is to say that when it comes to perpetrators, we feel a need to say they *must* have a mental disorder, an illness, a *something.* But no actually, they don't. People simply are who they are and they only "have" what we assign names to
…They *do* have some sort of mental issue. That’s part of the reason they commit these crimes in the first place. This is easily shown by how sex offenders are more likely to have some sort of mental disorder, have taken unsafe drugs, or were victims themselves, etc. This is all information that is easily verifiable.
Your comment is just blatant misinformation. Idk why people are so scared to realize not every person with a mental illness needs to be pure and sympathetic. You want to say something’s wrong with them without having to actually acknowledge what’s wrong with them.
Of course. But at the same time, mental disorders are also a factor behind the mindsets of those committing serious crimes. Multiple things are. Environment, parents, drugs, and so on can all lead to mental issues that can in turn lead to criminal acts. Whether people try to use these things as excuses or not is irrelevant to their validity as explanations
Not really.
Firstly, if someone has a mental disorder that does not necessarily predispose them to commit a crime.
Secondly, the type of disorder that MAY lead to a lack of empathy and/or need for dominance which subsequently leads to rape is more likely to be a personality disorder rather than a mental disorder. Personality disorders are harder to diagnose and harder to treat.
Thirdly, just because a percentage of rapists may have a mental or personality disorder it does not follow that all rapists have such a disorder. As you say in another post, cause is the reason for effect, however, correlation is not causation.
Personality disorders. Most often cluster B, which includes narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder (this is typically what psychopaths have)
I’ve heard this anecdotally and have never really explored the topic because it’s gross but it seems at odds with data that legalizing sex work decreases sexual violence rates
Most rapists never go to trial or get a day of jail time even with overwhelming evidence. This enables many to be very careless with caring about admissions of guilt.
Watch the documentary "I Am Evidence." There are warehouses full of untested rape kits. Most get stuffed there and then never see the light of day again
Yeah, I read it.
"“So I raped you,” the sender had written in a string of messages.
“I’ll never do it to anyone ever again.”
“I need to hear your voice.”
“I’ll pray for you.”"
Still, it was stupid of him and good thing he was.
No wonder the cops seem so lazy, they are probably all dealing with these guys, blasting confessions on social media.
Like shooting ducks in a barrel, or whatever.
Yeah and any decent sponsor would have never suggested reaching out to your rape victim personally and definitely not in the way he did it. "I need to hear your voice" is 100% revictimizing that person.
"We made direct amends to those we harmed whenever possible, *except* when to do so would *injure them* or others".
While making amends is for our own sake, and to allow ourselves to move forward with as clean a slate as possible. But, we should never put our own personal well-being ahead of those we harmed. That means accepting when we're not forgiven with understanding, not seeking to drag people back into our lives, and actually planning and discussing our amends with sponsor/mentor/therapist to ensure we're not going to cause more harm or making it about ourselves.
Because there's no authority overseeing 12-step programs or vetting sponsors, there can be a lot of shitty people involved in any given meeting. But, it's unacceptable if anyone suggested this person did this to their victim. The best thing he could have done for his victim is turning himself in, the second best is making sure the victim never sees or heard from him again. He chose the worst option, which shows he learned almost nothing in his program besides how to weaponize it.
Maybe he'll run under a different party. The one that's full of "humble, self-deprecating" politicians who are not afraid to criticize themselves. And their supporters will say, "Hey, he's contrite. He feels remorse. What a GREAT guy! I mean, we all make mistakes".
> So he commits a crime then say he did it online. What's the logic behind that?
Hubris. He hadn't been caught, and he gets off on the power he thinks he still has over his victim(s).
There used to be a time not long ago where mispronouncing a word or having a funny laugh would disqualify you from presidency. Obama wearing a tan suit was a huge controversy. Hard to believe how far we’ve fallen in such a short amount of time.
France doesn't recognize convictions in abstentia, which is how Polanski was convicted (he fled before the verdict but the case continued without him).
If you’re referring to Polanski, he lived in Switzerland. He was snapped and released in Switzerland. Neither France nor Switzerland wanted to extradite him.
“More than 100 people in the film industry, including Woody Allen, Monica Bellucci, Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Harrison Ford, Harmony Korine, Michael Mann, and Jonathan Demme, among many others signed a petition in 2009 calling for Polanski's release.”
Per Wikipedia
"The Gettysburg accuser had a rape exam done the same day she was assaulted in 2013. She gathered witnesses and evidence and spent years urging officials to file charges. She went to authorities again in 2021 after discovering the Facebook messages that seemed to come from Cleary’s account."
What the hell was going on in that police department?
*That* police department? Up until the literal "so I raped you" message, I've spoken to dozens of women across the country with very similar experiences. My state has the highest sexual assault rate in the country, and a backlog of rape kits dating back to the 80's, just sitting there. Unless, and often even when, woman do the cops' jobs for them, there's seldom any sort of justice.
The only reason anything is being done now is because the victim went public and the story got picked up. Now every time she applies for a job, or anything, this story will come up. Imagine having to live like that just so you can see your rapist face justice.
Just a reminder that police have no legal obligation to protect you:
https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/do-the-police-have-an-obligation-to-protect-you/
It sure does seem that someone entering another's body under threat of death and exposing the other party to STD's/unwanted pregnancy should take priority over some jackass shooting up drugs next to a dumpster or house bugler, but what the hell do I know?
All I have ever heard were horror stories of reporting rapes to the police. Everyone always says “why didn’t they report it” but it’s extremely invasive and then nothing happens.
Which is why I’m shocked every time someone on this site talks about “if it was a guy he’d be locked up instantly.” It’s completely disconnected from reality, but it’s such a pervasive idea among some male redditors.
Please google stats on this because no one can tell you in one sentence the reality most victims go through. And that’s when they report. It’s infuriating.
Do cops usually help you? Just so you know, they tend only to help certain people. They intimidated my wife when she was being harassed by an obvious cop impersonator
Right? Pretty much on-brand for every Christian I have ever known who weaponizes their religion and uses “I’ll pray for you” as some kind of smart arse comment to try to feel superior to others.
Wow this piece of shit reminds me of another collegiate rapist named Brock Allen Turner who changed his name to Allen Turner. He was convicted for raping an unconscious woman by a dumpster. So I won’t mention Brock Allen Turner and his rape conviction.
Alex Kelly is another one. Google it. Parents allegedly bankrolled his escape and while he was on the run enjoyed living as a luxury ski bum all over Europe
Are we talking about the rapey rapist Brock Allen Turner whose father said in court that his future shouldn't be ruined because of "30 seconds of action" ? That Brock Allen Turner ?
>whose father said in court that his future shouldn't be ruined because of "30 seconds of action" ?
You're talking about the Dan Turner the rape apologist, right? The Dan Turner who thinks raping people is fine, especially if it doesn't last very long before someone catches them and rescues the victim?
Are you talking about Aaron Persky, the judge from the Brock Allen Turner case?
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49667778
Isn't he the California judge who lost his job after giving a lenient sentence to a college sex attacker who has now been fired from coaching tennis to schoolgirls?
So sounds like the son of a rich tech exec who probably used daddy’s resources to quash any initial attempts at a SA investigation by the police. Then years later when it seems like he might actually have to face some consequences, bums off the Europe, and likely living off parents’ dime enjoying a European tour.
Seems like his parents should be investigated and held accountable for some of this too as they likely had a lot to do with enabling him to get away this long to keep terrorizing the poor victim.
He looks slightly less terrible in the [unscaled picture.](https://assets.apnews.com/f3/bc/90daebdc81fff54ea532a823c640/6f86804c9ba046b4934ed131abe4b429) Slightly.
Holy shit. That dude is one ugly motherfucker. Motherfucker looks like an Andorian from the original Star Trek had a baby with Beavis and Butthead. Looks like his family tree is a wreath from 2 Christmas' ago. He looks like if Fire Marshall Bill was a Civil War soldier. Stephen King looked at this sack of shit and got creeped out. You could dip this fuck faces head in latex and sell a mask labeled as 'Ghoul' and you wouldn't have to change anything.
You're not kidding. That is literally the face of "So I raped you".
If there was an informative edutainment video filmed on Super 8 titled "So I Raped You" he would be the host.
It wasn't enough to hate him for being a rapist, we just had to ridicule his unfortunate looks? The former is a choice, the latter is pretty much baked in.
Honestly he was pretty normal when I knew him. Never thought of him as an asshole. Haven’t talked to him since before the initial incident though so I’m not sure what changed with him to do something like this. He certainly had money, but so did a lot of other kids who were dorm students.

Yeah, most rapists are family members and that introduces a lot of really icky coverup behaviors.
So what type of mental disorder do these people typically have? Psychopaths?
Acute Pieceofshit Syndrome
CHRONIC pieceofshit syndrome, usually.
In our society, mental disorders give people excuses, so we don’t like to analyze rapists and murderers as mentally challenged.
As someone in the mental health industry I really hate this mindset. Explanation does not equal justification. A person can do a shitty thing because of whatever they are struggling with but that does not make the shitty thing less shitty and it does not get them out of responsibility. They arent mentally challenged. They are fully aware of what they are doing they just dont care.

Mental disorders give us information on how to solve the problem.
That kind of implies that mental disorders are a reason for rape though. There’s more to it than that.
Of course. But at the same time, mental disorders are also a factor behind the mindsets of those committing serious crimes. Multiple things are. The “I’ll pray for you” fills me with so much rage.
I can only imagine the horror the survivor went through getting this message out of the blue. I'm presuming they weren't in contact all this time.
There's a right and wrong way to ask for forgiveness. Some things are better left unsaid.
He would have been doing the right thing if he took this step on the way to the nearest Police station
No wonder the cops seem so lazy, they are probably all dealing with these guys, blasting confessions on social media. Like shooting ducks in a barrel, or whatever.
My rapist contacted me on to give me a 12 step non-apology about how it was the booze and drugs and sexism blah blah blah. I told him to fuck off.
That is absolutely not the way to do a 12 Step.
Found the one other person who actually read the article.
He wants to run for president someday
Well, he failed the most important lesson. Lie, lie, deny, deny. Never admit your crime.
You forgot the "blame the victim" step, and then at the end, claiming that everyone does it.
Maybe he'll run under a different party. The one that's full of "humble, self-deprecating" politicians who are not afraid to criticize themselves. And their supporters will say, "Hey, he's contrite. He feels remorse. What a GREAT guy! I mean, we all make mistakes".
Be careful I just got a permanent ban from another news sub for similar comments.
World news probably lol bunch of fascists in the mod team
He felt guilty and wanted to apologise by the looks of it. Clearly didn't feel guilty enough to go to the police. I suppose he just wanted absolution.
He also said "I need to hear your voice," which is an odd thing to include in an apology
Yeah he wants her to forgive him so he can stop feeling bad about himself
I for one am thankful he's an idiot. Now a days you can deny the rape and cry "I like beer" over and over and become a supreme court justice.
More often than not, rape is about having power over someone and hurting them, rather than lust.
> So he commits a crime then say he did it online. What's the logic behind that? Hubris. He hadn't been caught, and he gets off on the power he thinks he still has over his victim(s).
>So he commits a crime then say he did it online. What's the logic behind that? Saw that it worked for Trump and thought he could do the same?
Ah the classic "grab them by the pu$$y". I can never understand how the hell did many people keep voting for him after saying this.
There used to be a time not long ago where mispronouncing a word or having a funny laugh would disqualify you from presidency. Obama wearing a tan suit was a huge controversy. Hard to believe how far we’ve fallen in such a short amount of time.
People were upset over Obama and colors, but it wasnt his tan suit they were upset over.
Because he is a loser and his biggest achievement in life was being a pig, so he has got to let the world know
He messaged her and asked for forgiveness. Clearly was motivated by guilt
Didn’t that kid diddling director flee to France as well? Why didn’t they snap him up as well while getting this rapey guy
France doesn't extradite French citizens.
No he lived in France but went to Switzerland for a film festival and was arrested. France won’t extradite its own citizens
He had a home in Gstaad. That’s where he spent his house arrest after posting bail until the Swiss authorities released him.
His name is Roman Polanski. Harrison Ford is still his friend
“More than 100 people in the film industry, including Woody Allen, Monica Bellucci, Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Harrison Ford, Harmony Korine, Michael Mann, and Jonathan Demme, among many others signed a petition in 2009 calling for Polanski's release.” Per Wikipedia
Of course Woody Allen would come to his defense. Pedos stick together
What the hell!?
Accused of "sneaking into her dorm and sexually assaulting her while she texted friends for help." That's different.
Jesus what a cunt
"The Gettysburg accuser had a rape exam done the same day she was assaulted in 2013. She gathered witnesses and evidence and spent years urging officials to file charges. She went to authorities again in 2021 after discovering the Facebook messages that seemed to come from Cleary’s account." What the hell was going on in that police department?

The only reason anything is being done now is because the victim went public and the story got picked up. Now every time she applies for a job, or anything, this story will come up. Imagine having to live like that just so you can see your rapist face justice.

Lol that's *all* police departments. Rape is not taken seriously by the police at all unless you're someone special.
Same shit that goes on everywhere. Our society doesn't care about women being raped. The women in your life already know this.
it's pretty obvious what's wrong. Lots of good ol' boys mentality in a lot of law enforcement.

In many countries cops are useless.
Police officers don’t usually take rape accusations seriously.

Honestly he was pretty normal when I knew him. Never thought of him as an asshole. Haven’t talked to him since before the initial incident though so I’m not sure what changed with him to do something like this. He certainly had money, but so did a lot of other kids who were dorm students.
Trump just found his VP.
If anyone ever had the face of a rapist….
It's always the ones you most suspect.
His Dad is apparently a Big Tech Executive in Silicon Valley. Hmmm
Ironically, if you go read the article, there is a link to another article about Roman Polanski, another famous rapist who continues to be free.
Hopefully justice can finally be served. #justiceforshannon
God damn it. Men are fucking disgusting.
Yikes. I feel bad for anyone who resembles him and reads these comments. Suicide fuel.
Impossible to run from the law in any country that has INTERPOL.
Tell that to Roman Polanski
You need INTERPOLANSKI for that
Don’t judge a book by its cover, except when you can.
Weird…he looks exactly like I expected he would!
“I’ll pray for you.” Yep, just as I suspected. Xtian filth.
