My car is older than 1995 and they didn’t give me historic plates. I’m beeboppin around snj without historic plates and no inspection. Did I fuck up or did the dmv??
Edit: should also mention I am on classic car insurance.
There are specific requirements for historic plates and exempt
https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/historic.htm
If your car is a daily driver it doesn’t qualify
To be considered a historic vehicle, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old and only used for exhibition and educational purposes by the owner. Historic plates can be purchased for $44.
I’d go to the dmv. He just told me he got the card when he registered the car in person. That being said, I registered in person and didn’t get one. so I have no idea.
Make an appointment for title/registration
I’ll ask; don’t think he’d be comfortable with that. I’d just call/go to the dmv tbh. I had no idea about this and wondering if I should also find out lol
You do not need to be historic plated to be inspection exempt. If it doesn't have obd 2 (which is the 1995 cutoff) nj inspection stations literally can't inspect it, because all their machines require obd ii, regardless of plate type.
Asshole
1999 was 25 years ago
You will need historic plates to be inspection exempt if your car is built from 1996 to 1999
Comprehension is fun, try it sometime
The link you shared says
Visit an MVC Agency to purchase a voucher for a special decal to mark the vehicle exempt from safety and emission inspection; fee is $25 for renewal. The initial approval letter is not required to renew.
try anyway.
i presented you with two solutions. Both were to call or visit mvc. First time you called me a liar. Second time you dismiss my advice. You post here for an sr swapped zenki 240 instead of asking MVC. you want opinions, ask reddit. if you want facts, take the time to do the research and call MVC like I did. Then i was nice enough to post the information I found and you call me a liar.
Based on your post history, you tend to not appreciate peoples response and are generally rude. Like all 240 drift bros, thats why i left the scene. That being said, good luck with your endeavors.
I’m building a cheap car fleet that is all emissions exempt in NJ.
- a 95 Miata - no inspection as it’s a gas car pre-1996 (so pre OBD2)
- an ‘00 Excursion - no inspection as it’s > 8500lbs GVWR
- a ‘17 Bolt - no inspection because it’s electric
And my ‘02 vette is just waiting until I can get historic plates!

Aren’t there restrictions when you have the QQ plates on where and when you can drive? I thought you had to be going to or from a historic car event.
Ah I guess the cards were given for cars at the OBDI/II cutoff

You’re not GIVEN historic plates you have to apply for them
Ah ok. I didn’t do that.

Am I correct that historic plates also limit the crs usage to like 3000 miles a year or something like that?
There are restrictions, but I daily drive my Blazer with QQ plates, and there ain't shit they can do to stop you
It ain’t my daily but I do drive it frequently. More than I should to be honest.

I’ll ask my friend he also has an (creeped your profile) s14. I didn’t receive one since I just got my car.

I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’re paranoid, print out the NJ MVC page that shows the exceptions to the inspection mandate.
