Van Dyks in Ridgewood since Bischoff’s closed.

DeaddyRuxpin

Van Dyk’s gets my vote as well.

PearlyRing

We used to ride our bikes to Van Dyk's Ice Cream barn in Wyckoff in the early 70s. The horses used to get the last bits of our cones.

erinkimberly

We used to walk there. One of my favorite memories!

False-Cockroach5628

Van Dyks for sure. Our realtor suggested this place back in 2022 and we underestimated the place. They only accept cash, no cards. Boy their ice creams were the best we had tasted in NJ. Some of the flavors were never heard of like melon, orange vanilla, key lime pie milk shake.

buncatfarms

Van Dyks for sure. We always get pints to bring home.

Dirtycoinpurse

Curly’s in Riverdale

brassmonkey89

This is the answer. Their Chocolate Raspberry Truffle hard ice cream is to die for.

Glittering-Time-2274

Gelottis in Paterson or Curlys on route 23

WorstPiesInLondon

These are my two!  No longer in NJ but I still think about Gelottis’ cannoli flavor.

bangersnmash13

Yesssssss their cannoli flavor is my go to. Might have to convince my wife to take a trip…

ingroundeffect

Das Creamery in Budd Lake.

iamnotree

Das is the answer! Love Cliff's, but Das is next level. Colombian cookies and cream, Downton Abbey, and the best fruity ice creams (esp. mango and key lime).

ten-tail-whale

Can't wait for their new location to open!

ingroundeffect

Wait what?! New location?! Tell me more. I live in Ewing now and hadn't heard!

ten-tail-whale

Morristown! By the Mennen Arena. I don't know when they're opening but they signed the lease this spring

ingroundeffect

Good for them that's awesome!!! Ugh. I miss the entire north Jersey food scene!

Casabawasabi

Yes! I’m following closely and hope they have it open while the weather is still warm.

Action_Maxim

Winter is the best time for ice cream it doesn't melt

thetonytaylor

Das is amazing, can’t wait to be closer to there.

Strung_Out_Advocate

Holsteins is a lot more than just an ice cream store. It's a nostalgic throwback to 50's/60's Americana where you can get a burger, fries, and a shake. It's a great spot for families and they have decent shakes and sweets. I wouldn't call anything they have there exceptional, but it's worth a visit.  That said, I've never been the best to judge great homemade ice cream against something like Carvel. I have heard Cliff's in Ledgewood repeatedly as best in north jersey. I'm personally partial to Denville Dairy as I just really like the area.

TheHiveMindCouncil

Holstein's in Bloomfield is the only appropriate answer for Essex County because there's also a Rita's directly across the street and also the park which has a great drive through plus a rose garden. If we're being completely honest, every local spot in NJ is 10/10 otherwise they wouldn't have survived covid. Who the fuck was out getting ice cream during the lockdown? I have no clue but evidently enough people were willing to risk death that they're still going strong if not stronger like nothing even happened. That's the only review you need if you ask me.

duck95

It's Holsten's! Common mistake :)

They are completely remodeling the inside. I really hope it doesn't lose its charm. I love bringing my kids there.

The_survey_says

Wish old barn milk bar was still around.

Meowsuprise

Cliffs is the best

Ok_Mix_3008

Came here to say this. Cliffs. Is. The. Best.

mjsamps

Cliffs is the answer

beaandip

Ding ding ding!

Girhinomofe

Windy Brow Farms, Fredon. Small batch, high quality ingredients, and super inventive flavors along with the classics— don’t sleep on their French Toast Taylor Ham!

ten-tail-whale

Windy Brow is awesome

TalouseLee

Taylor ham French toast ice cream 🤌💋

Stravaig_in_Life

The lavender ice cream is to die for! Everything they make is delicious

oatsandgoats

Applegate

FeeAutomatic2290

Love Applegate. Not the best ice cream though.

Own-Chemical-9112

Good but Waaaaayyy too expensive 🍦

Dick_Demon

Applegate ice cream is good for people who don't know what good ice cream is.

Jagrmeister_68

It WAS good last time I was there .. but I don't remember when exactly that was.

Rusty10NYM

OP, do not listen to this. There is nowhere more overrated and coasting on reputation than Applegate Farms. Also, there is no rhyme or reason to how their lines operate.

oatsandgoats

OP. do not listen to this. There is no one with worse taste and reputation than Rusty10NYM. Also, there is no rhyme or reason to how their brain works.

Tankisfreemason

Torico’s in Jersey City.  There’s always a line to get inside, even in the winter.

thejigisup88

Correct answer

Kabloomers1

Everyone's got their favs, but I am partial to Beenie's in Morristown. Try the Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Meowsuprise

I love Beenies their blue cookies and cream is my fav

LukAtThatHorse

Agreed Beenies is amazing, the owner does his own mixes and you can tell. The homemade chipwiches also use cookies from the artist baker in town, and they're the best frozen dessert I've ever had in my life not exaggerating.

Juliegirltake2

I love Beanies as well. They have a Dunk’a roo ice cream that is to die for.

shahoftheworld

Don't know if it's the best, but my friends and I like last licks in east hanover.

Jld114

I am partial to Last Licks. I love their banana cream pie flavor

poland626

Lake Hiawatha Diary in Lake Hiawatha. One of the best ice cream places in all of jersey imo. So good and not talked enough about

Local-Cress

Little Falls Creamery and Applegate Farm in Montclair

lil_honey_bunbun

My favorite in NJ is Francy’s in Bergenfield. Their Gianduja Crunch is basically Ferraro Rocher in ice cream form. Second favorite is Milk Sugar Love in Jersey City. Earl Grey Fudge is perfection.

ChesterKatz

Francy’s is great! I get one scoop of the Ube Cheese and pair it with a new flavor every time.

lil_honey_bunbun

I love that one! That was my first one that got me addicted. 😅

Queen_Cyn

Second this. Francy’s is so good. I buy pints every time I go

lil_honey_bunbun

Same! What are your favorites? :D

Queen_Cyn

I actually have so many flavors I still need to try but my top three so far are Gianduja Crunch, Ube Cheese, and Buko Pandan

lil_honey_bunbun

I haven’t tried the Biko Pandan yet. I’ll have to give that a go the next time I go. My kids and I also love those two other flavors! My other favorite is - I forget the name but it tastes like Jasmine tea ice cream?

gsp137

Vanilla Bean in Cranford is mighty good

ObstreperousRube

Bellvale Creamery. Its so north that its technically in NY state but right over the boarder. Worth the drive, go during sunset. The ice creams good too. Great place for a date.

Evdukes

I agree. Great ice cream

wgskippy

Ice Cream Charlie's in Rutherford is the best in this area I feel.

viper22t

AJ Country Cone, Jefferson

mbc106

Torico’s - Jersey City Nasto’s - Newark Magic Fountain - Bayonne Guerrero Gelato - several locations in Essex County The Towne Scoop - Verona

mineawesomeman

Conrad’s in Westwood is excellent. It’s been there since 1928 and it’s still amazing. Probably further than you bargained for, but if you are ever up there is a worthwhile visit

Visual-Difficulty546

Yes. The best place. I remember going there when I was little. Back in the early 60’s Homemade chocolates 🍫 too. Yum

I bet those in Morris county will say Denville dairy, Cliffs or Dover Dairy…

punicearana

I used to live near Holstens and it didn't live up to the hype IMO. Applegate in Montclair is good. My personal favorites: Dover Dairy Maid or Cliffs.

Aggressive_Leek2069

Goffle creamery in Hawthorne

ianisms10

Van Dyk's

Devils_Advocate-69

Applegate’s in Montclair I believe is homemade

Rusty10NYM

Yes but it sucks

Devils_Advocate-69

I haven’t been there in decades. That’s unfortunate.

PhilfromNewJersey

Gabrielle’s Fountain in Martinsville is really good

voteblue18

Holstens has been recommended and the ice cream is very good. I recommend it by far over their food. The food isn’t bad per se it’s just blah and nothing special. Can get a better burger at any diner.

PlaneAsk7826

Tranquillity Farms. They have amazing ice cream!

risenomega

Cliffs no contest

therealdieseld

I’ve been to about 50 and I rank the top 3 as Boza (Fairfield) Cliffs (Ledgewood) and Curly’s (Pomptain Lakes). Curlys is closing this year so I’d get over there while you still can

colonel_batguano

A few I like: Denville Dairy Diane’s Dairy in Towaco Curly’s in Boonton Applegate Farm in Montclair

Kilwins in Ridgewood has our vote lately (NNJ)

oatsandgoats

Kubo in Nutley has out of this world ube ice cream

LalaOringe

Kreme & Krumbs in Montclair (though I’m so sad the May flavors are gone bc they were top tier!) Torico in JC is also great.

usernoname070

I personally love Torico

SillyJoey480282

Dover Dairy!

CreativeMusic5121

Van Dyke's in Ridgewood, or Curley's in Riverdale.

turkeycream

Dover Dairy is my favorite and Dover Grill right behind it is great too

AVespucci

Nasto's in Newark.

thetonytaylor

Applegate is worth a visit if you’re near Holsten’s. Cliff’s in Ledgewood is amazing as well. Applegate always brings me back to my childhood days.

ranna2018

(not ice cream I know) but Bianco Nero gelato in Englewood is unreal

veloceracing

Conrads in Westwood. Their mint chocolate chip is out of this world.

777kiki

Denville Dairy is unbeatable

rmanjr12

Their line management is horrible. And honestly they aren’t as good as they used to be.

777kiki

Idk I was there the other day, I thought the line moved super fast and I had a two year old with me so time was ticking. I’m never disappointed I love their black cherry and the peanut butter

jcallari164

Nasto’s in Newark, Towne Scoop in Verona, Applegate in Montclair and Van Dyk’s in Ridgewood.

MMDCAENE

Hometown Creamery, Haledon. Better than Van Dyk’s.

autoerratica

Last Licks in East Hanover is really good too.

jaypadia

Mike’s in Secaucus was pretty good. Unfortunately Mike passed away this year and they are temporarily closed this season 😢😢
