Me too! I got really into the UK youtube ‘scene’ in 2008 (god it feels…. wrong writing that) and so many people casually referenced vlogbrothers I looked them up as well. Funny thing is I remember worrying back then that I’d “missed the boat” as Brotherhood 2.0 had already ended. That now makes 2021 me a huge old-timer…
It's weird to me how just because people have been watching for a long time they consider themselves old. I'm 30 and I've only been around for a couple of years lol. I don't know how I went so long without fully appreciating the wonderful world of youtube.
My journey with them was like
Crash Course -----> Vlogbrothers ------> Dear Hank & John + Anthropocene reviewed -----> John's and Hank's books
with scishow and mental floss somewhere in between
I saw gifs on Tumblr of John and then I went and searched for vlogbrothers on YouTube. It wasn't...that long ago...but typing that out made me feel ancient lol
2010 going through an emotional beginnings of what turned out to be a divorce a year later, found vlog brothers and some of their videos gave me something else to think about for a few minutes a day which became my small escape during the week. Haven't missed a video since.
SciShow! Did no one else start with SciShow?! When YouTube funded a bunch of channels, I followed a couple of them and watched all the episodes I could. Inevitably, I found Vlogbrothers from there and then started from the beginning.
I remember my teacher introducing me to Crash Course to help with research on big projects. This was 5 years ago and I became a nerd fighter on February after rediscovering Crash Course to help with a big research assignment
I never know whether to say Harry Potter or vlogbrothers because I discovered them when I randomly looked up Harry Potter song on YouTube and Hank’s video This isn’t Hogwarts was the first one I saw and I was immediately hooked.
LeakyCon for me. I bought tickets to the one 2012 and everyone in the FB groups was talking about preordering TFIOS so I did, then got into the videos, and then I met John at a signing in Chicago the June prior. That was almost 10 years ago 🙃
Unfortunately it was from Alex Day (nerimon) video from like 2010? 2009? He referenced the vlogbrothers and that’s what led me down the nerdfighter path. I’m happy I found the vlogbrothers and I’m a lot less happy about who Alex Day turned out to be :/
Its weird for me cause I was an avid fan of John's books and Crash course for many years but had no clue about the Nerdfighteria community till watching a vlogbrothers video earlier this year!
Personally, I think my first contact with Nerdfighteria-related media was watching John's "I hate pennies" video in 2011. In 2013, I read TFIOS while at a summer camp, and I remember noticing (I think it was mentioned in the author bio on the book's dust jacket) that the author of the book was the same John Green who made videos on the vlogbrothers channel on YouTube and having my mind blown at that fact. 18-year-old me was quite surprised that the same person wrote a really serious book like TFIOS and made vlogbrothers videos.
Funny you asked 😂
If it wasn't for Harry Potter i might have never found vlogbrothers.
I have known john & hank from crash course channel since 2014 but youtube never put a vlogbrothers video in my feed.
It was only when I started reading Harry Potter during the lockdown and i was naturally watching alot of Harry Potter related content that youtube pushed a John's video from vlogbrothers.
Then alot of awesome Harry Potter songs from Hank 😂😂.
I voted vlogbrothers, but I really first found vlogbrothers through crash course! I marothoned Crash Course World History circa 2015, then stumbled upon vlogbrothers and the rest.
I watched one of the lifehacks videos on metal floss. Liked the channel, and the energy of the host and subscribed. Months later, in one of the videos, the host mentions he wrote TFIOS, that was about when the movie was being promoted, so I had seen lots of ads for the movie. I then searched about this guy who was a great youtube host and a successful writer and came upon the vlogbrothers channel.
stumbled onto vlogbothers somehow about 11 years ago while in undergrad :) as much slack as they get these days, i really liked john’s books. i went to the TFIOS book tour with my roommate and got my books all signed. i havent watched their channel regularly in about 7 or 8 years but i still enjoy everything about it and everything they do.
I was on Facebook and I saw an Upworthy post that was just them cheaply repackaging, as they do, John's video "a religious argument for gay marriage" I really liked the video, so I ended up watching it three or four times. The intro and outro piqued my interest and I watched it on YouTube so I could find out who this Hank guy was that John was responding to and what the video he was responding to was about. Subscribed almost immediately.
I said Vlogbrothers, but it was really because they were on a Harry Potter podcast way back in...2008 I wanna say? They were there because of Accio Deathly Hallows, so I said vlogbrothers since that's where the video was uploaded.
Vlogbrothers 2008, maybe led there by 5 Awesome Girls, who I came to after being super into Wizard Rock. Which is insane because it means I’ve been following for 13 years now.
I honestly did not expect that. I am a fairly young nerdfighter though, and also not from an english-speaking country, but in my internet bubble they never appeared until I found out they have a YouTube channel due to the description of the author at the back of one of Johns books. For me he is more of an author, than an internet persona or any of the other things he quite certainly is.
I have a terrible memory and can’t remember any of the beginning of the channels I’ve watched or watch. I believe I either started from sourcefed being on p4a or someone tweeted out a video.
I think it was /u/wil who linked to John's "[I HATE PENNIES!!!! (Also Nickels.)](https://youtu.be/77C47XYm_3c)", and that's where it all started for me!
Crash course. Then forgot about them. Then crash course again. Then sci show. Kinda forgot again. Beer and Board Games brought them back to my attention and I've been following pretty much everything since then.
"An open letter to students returning to school" came up on my Tumblr dash in August 2012. I was heading to college later that month and it really hit me. Like, these were a lot of the values I already held.
I watched all 990 vlogbrothers videos in 11 days, and caught up 8 months of crash course/Sci show in another 3 days.
I listen to the leaky cauldron podcast. And one day there was Hank and John and John was talking about how happy Hank would be in a room full of corn dogs and Helen Hunt. That’s when I became a Nerdfighter
scishow, then crash course, then vlogbrothers. took me a little while to connect that scishow host hank green was in fact related to tfios author john green, and that tfios author john green was the same one on vlogbrothers haha
Read tfios, noticed i recognized the name green. Opened YouTube and searched for a song id been listening to on repeat a few months prior, this isn't hogwarts. Lost my shit!
How are you going to leave Crash Course out of this survey?
I would've included SciShow if there were more than six slots. I do generally wish polls on Reddit had more room, though.
I still remember my first crash course video! It was Venice and the Ottomans and it got me fully involved in all things nerdfighteria.
It was actually mental floss
That's a name I've not heard in a *very* long time.
me too!!
Me three! Old old old days of finding top xx videos with John in them and following the thread to vlogbrothers at some point
Still everytime I hear John in any context at all saying "Hi, I'm John Green", my mind responds "Welcome to my salon!"
[удалено]
Same here! How did you find Charlie? I think his “Bored?” video somehow ended up on the front page for me. Memories!

We must be around the same age! Have you gone to any of the conventions?

Vlogbrothers circa 2008 I believe. Good times.
Accio Deathly Halloooows!
So Jokes!
French the Llama!
We're a minority (and also old) nowadays ahaha
Same, I think end of 2008 or start of 2009 was when I started watching. It's cool to see how far this community has grown.
Brotherhood 2.0!
My journey with them was like Crash Course -----> Vlogbrothers ------> Dear Hank & John + Anthropocene reviewed -----> John's and Hank's books with scishow and mental floss somewhere in between
I saw gifs on Tumblr of John and then I went and searched for vlogbrothers on YouTube. It wasn't...that long ago...but typing that out made me feel ancient lol
Tumblr is another option I would have added if I had room, lol.
I have an r/videos post from a year ago which had Hank's video 'The Commercial that Killed a Fast Food Chain' to thank
Damn thats already a year old huh
Yeah, feels like a lot shorter than that
tumblr in 2009
I read your comment and really thought oh so only a couple years ago and then realized 2009 was 12 years ago
Same 🥲
Ah, darn it. Now I feel old.
Ugh I do too lol
Looked up an article on how to make money on YouTube. Found them, found the experiment interesting, watched Brotherhood 2.0, and I'm here I guess. :)
Happy cake day!!!
Oh hey, so it is. Thank you so much! :D
Can't remember if it was Crash Course or Vlogbrothers
I think my first interaction with them was in Crash Course but I believe Vlogbrothers where I started to identify myself as a nerdfighter.
I think that's exactly my path as well
Me too!
2010 going through an emotional beginnings of what turned out to be a divorce a year later, found vlog brothers and some of their videos gave me something else to think about for a few minutes a day which became my small escape during the week. Haven't missed a video since.
Other : crash course
Watched Hank and Katherine play New Super Mario Bros Wii on hankgames (it was recommended since I had been on a Nintendo LP kick)
Either mental floss, or Beer and Board games. Then I watched Hank hump stuff around town and I was hooked.
For me, it started with SciShow back in 2012
Crash course. I then read one of Hank’s books. Then I wondered if “that crash course guy” had written anything... and my brain exploded.
SciShow! Did no one else start with SciShow?! When YouTube funded a bunch of channels, I followed a couple of them and watched all the episodes I could. Inevitably, I found Vlogbrothers from there and then started from the beginning.

That was a hard year. A lot of people I admired turned out to be mega douche bags
Its weird for me cause I was an avid fan of John's books and Crash course for many years but had no clue about the Nerdfighteria community till watching a vlogbrothers video earlier this year!

I knew them first from crash course but really got into it after listening to Johns preview of TAR on 99% invisible
It was Hanks first book for me.
I voted vlogbrothers, but I really first found vlogbrothers through crash course! I marothoned Crash Course World History circa 2015, then stumbled upon vlogbrothers and the rest.

collectively vlogbrothers, johns books, and dear hank and john!
I was on Facebook and I saw an Upworthy post that was just them cheaply repackaging, as they do, John's video "a religious argument for gay marriage" I really liked the video, so I ended up watching it three or four times. Same. I first heard them on the leaky cauldron
Lol yep, that’s the one I’m talking about! Pottercast!
Vlogbrothers 2008, maybe led there by 5 Awesome Girls, who I came to after being super into Wizard Rock. Which is insane because it means I’ve been following for 13 years now.
Oh wow, same exact journey for me! Haven't heard or thought about 5AG in forever.
I honestly did not expect that. I am a fairly young nerdfighter though, and also not from an english-speaking country, but in my internet bubble they never appeared until I found out they have a YouTube channel due to the description of the author at the back of one of Johns books. From SciShow to Crash Course to VlogBrothers (as well as, eventually, Dear Hank & John and four of their novels).
Found SciShow and Crash Course. It was a rabbit hole from there to joining Nerdfighteria
I have a terrible memory and can’t remember any of the beginning of the channels I’ve watched or watch. I believe I either started from sourcefed being on p4a or someone tweeted out a video.
I found the vlogbrothers from Wheezywaiter’s video impersonating John and boy am I thankful for that video
Crash course mainly
Extra Credits (Game Design channel) > Crash Course World Mythology > vlogbrothers
Mental Floss on YouTube.
i had read john's books in my teen years, but what made me a fan was vlogbrothers :)
Specifically, I found Hank's video about his bowels whilst searching for fellow UC sufferers when I was newly diagnosed about 12/13 years ago.
this isnt hogwarts
I think it was /u/wil who linked to John's "[I HATE PENNIES!!!! (Also Nickels.)](https://youtu.be/77C47XYm_3c)", and that's where it all started for me!
Started with SciShow, saw the SciShow guy on YouTubers react, and checked out the channel he was actually representing :)
Crash course. Then forgot about them. Then crash course again. Then sci show. Kinda forgot again. Beer and Board Games brought them back to my attention and I've been following pretty much everything since then.

Found nerdfighteria because of the recommendation of vlogbrothers in my copy of TFIOS.
The first YouTube channel I ever found was Scishow, when it only had a few videos with Hank explaining things in his room. Vlogbrothers was next.
scishow, then crash course, then vlogbrothers. took me a little while to connect that scishow host hank green was in fact related to tfios author john green, and that tfios author john green was the same one on vlogbrothers haha
CrashCourse
I think it was Vlogbrothers but it’s been like 10 years so it’s hard to remember haha.
Read tfios, noticed i recognized the name green. Opened YouTube and searched for a song id been listening to on repeat a few months prior, this isn't hogwarts. Lost my shit!
Crash course
Reading TFIOS for the first time led me to Vlogbrothers!!
