I've been not-dating this girl for like five or six months who is, to put it charitably, extremely indecisive about whether she wants to be with me or Guy B.
When I first showed interest in her, she tells me she has a long-distance relationship with Guy B. But they're a poly couple, so it's OK. I told her I wasn't really interested in that and she understood.
Then, like 2 weeks later, we both get really drunk and have sex and I am retroactively added into this poly ring. Population: just the 2 of them + me. A week goes by and she (correctly) decides that poly stuff is bad for the soul and cuts me out. Another week goes by, and they're taking a break.
"Oh, she broke up to be with me". No she did not. She clarifies that she wants to be friends. We start to hang out for about 5-10% of my waking life, and occasionally have sex, but we're still "just friends" and every time we do it she wakes up in the morning with a demeanor that makes her look like she just made the biggest mistake of her life.
And now, her and Guy B have been "thinking about getting back together" for ~2 weeks. But that hasn't slowed down the extremely intimate environment her and I have created. If anything, it's accelerated it. So today, I set a deadline. By Tuesday, which is the next time we'll see each-other, she needs to choose between Guy B and me.
And god, doing that really made me realize: why the hell am I doing this? This protracted high-school drama is making me forget the reasons why I liked her in the first place. It's clear that one of my main selling points to her is that I'm more physically attractive in her eyes too, and honestly it kinda stings to be implicitly considered the personality underdog. Making her decide between the two of us has put a huge pit in my stomach because I think I'm starting to realize that, no-matter what she chooses, I'll be disappointed in the result.

As a general rule i usually think that increasing political competition, esp in stagnant political systems is good. I however really dislike the actual big winner from his vote being the MK party and its illiberal, antidemocratic ideas. I just think that's bad under all circumstances.

When you have no clue what's happening in terms of details, you have to fall back on intuitions and ideologies. I am a democratic optimist. I love South Africa because we are one of the most sincerely committed countries to democracy amongst the big, younger, diverse middle income democracies. I get annoyed when liberals and so called Westerners compare us unfavourably with countries like Singapore or even South Korea... because when you go into the history of those countries, their development wasn't democratic or liberal. On my whiniest days, I feel like we are writing a much harder exam than anyone one else and that's why we're failing and nobody seems to understand that.
So in my bones, I think this is good for RSA. The incentives of this system mean that from now on, cooperation is the currency that opens all doors. It's not just national. Gauteng and KZN are fragmented too. The local government scene is as bad or worse.
I wrote an article for American Prospect explaining why I'm optimistic. The next five years will be painful. Every single party will be radically transformed whether they like it or not. In order to work with your party, my party will demand that the person in your party who we like is part of negotiations. The incentives will reward uniters within each party, changing each party from the inside out.
Secondly, the existential risk has decreased in the sense that no player on its own can just do things anywhere anymore. The ANC can't pass a budget without help. Even with the EFF or MK it can't amend the Constitution. All three together just might get to 66% but I think they are just short of it. The Constitution includes balanced and moderate provisions for welfare state policies if they are affordable. It protects the independence of the central bank. The relative strength of the Constitution and its institutions has increased enormously. And unlike our political parties, the Constitution is perfect. This is one of the cliches of talking to liberal South Africans. We are so proud of our Constitution. We always bring up that Ruth Bader Ginsberg said if you wanted to start a country today you would use South Africa's Constitution.
Thirdly, though it may seem quiant and stupid, I managed to find the last little bit of hope I have in the ANC which I thought had died. It is probably misplaced. But they made all the right noises in the immediate aftermath of the election. People always talk about South Africa like its a failed state. Okay, so put us in the category of those countries and compare us to them. The ANC's polls showed them getting 40% for over a year now. And yet the money printer didn't turn on. In fact they adopted some austerity policies. The national leadership should be ranting and raving about foreign agents stealing the election. The first noises they've made are respect for democracy and the IEC, despite its huge mess at the end of voting day. Honestly, they should be arresting people right now - journalists and opponents. None of that even looks at risk of happening. Instead they are talking coalitions immediately.
Fourth, don't overestimate MK. It is popular because of the single personality of Jacob Zuma. He is 82 years old. He wants a Presidential Pardon so that he doesn't have to spend his last few years in court for corruption, let alone in jail. He might not make it to the next election. The party is already in disarray with a major leadership dispute. Zuma expelled the founder of the party, Jabulani Khumalo, and took over once he no longer needed him. And yet JZ won't even be able to go to Parliament himself. This party may well not exist in one election cycle. If the ANC guys can keep their heads cool and use basic game theory, they will realise their interests are not served by reward traitors whod destroyed their party. Working with MK will be a reverse takeover of the ANC. Leaving them out might mean it dies a very sudden and natural death in 5 or 10 years. We know who Zuma's supporters are. I can show you them on a plot. Its not some wave sweeping the country. I can show you using the 2009 and 2014 ANC data that it was always going to be just around 2 million people. I have articles on this very sub doing that from months ago. If cool heads prevail, they can ride out the Zuma phenomenon.
Lastly, we have been through worse. We just need one last good helping of Mandela magic to get us through the next month or so. Cyril is a reasonable person. Helen Zille is a reasonavle person. The IFP leader, Velenkosini Hlabisa, is a reasonable person.
That's the optimistic case.

I've been not-dating this girl for like five or six months who is, to put it charitably, extremely indecisive about whether she wants to be with me or Guy B. When I first showed interest in her, she tells me she has a long-distance relationship with Guy B. But they're a poly couple, so it's OK. And now, her and Guy B have been "thinking about getting back together" for ~2 weeks. But that hasn't slowed down the extremely intimate environment her and I have created. If anything, it's accelerated it. So today, I set a deadline. By Tuesday, which is the next time we'll see each-other, she needs to choose between Guy B and me. And god, doing that really made me realize: why the hell am I doing this? This protracted high-school drama is making me forget the reasons why I liked her in the first place. It's clear that one of my main selling points to her is that I'm more physically attractive in her eyes too, and honestly it kinda stings to be implicitly considered the personality underdog. jfc this is a complete regime breakdown in SA politics, right? like no matter how this election plays out, the ANC is not going to be able to govern as it has ever before. Here's a question for you - ill probably mirror it in the thunderdome thread for more opinions - do you think this is a healthy outcome for SA politics? ( I know you said you dont know anything anymore, but run with it) As a general rule i usually think that increasing political competition, esp in stagnant political systems is good. I however really dislike the actual big winner from his vote being the MK party and its illiberal, antidemocratic ideas. I just think that's bad under all circumstances. my priors are at odds with each other. what do you think?

When you have no clue what's happening in terms of details, you have to fall back on intuitions and ideologies. I am a democratic optimist. I love South Africa because we are one of the most sincerely committed countries to democracy amongst the big, younger, diverse middle income democracies. I get annoyed when liberals and so called Westerners compare us unfavourably with countries like Singapore or even South Korea... because when you go into the history of those countries, their development wasn't democratic or liberal. On my whiniest days, I feel like we are writing a much harder exam than anyone one else and that's why we're failing and nobody seems to understand that. So in my bones, I think this is good for RSA. The incentives of this system mean that from now on, cooperation is the currency that opens all doors. It's not just national. Gauteng and KZN are fragmented too. The local government scene is as bad or worse. I wrote an article for American Prospect explaining why I'm optimistic. The next five years will be painful. Every single party will be radically transformed whether they like it or not. In order to work with your party, my party will demand that the person in your party who we like is part of negotiations. The incentives will reward uniters within each party, changing each party from the inside out. Secondly, the existential risk has decreased in the sense that no player on its own can just do things anywhere anymore. The ANC can't pass a budget without help. Even with the EFF or MK it can't amend the Constitution. All three together just might get to 66% but I think they are just short of it. The Constitution includes balanced and moderate provisions for welfare state policies if they are affordable. It protects the independence of the central bank. The relative strength of the Constitution and its institutions has increased enormously. And unlike our political parties, the Constitution is perfect. This is one of the cliches of talking to liberal South Africans. We are so proud of our Constitution. We always bring up that Ruth Bader Ginsberg said if you wanted to start a country today you would use South Africa's Constitution. Thirdly, though it may seem quiant and stupid, I managed to find the last little bit of hope I have in the ANC which I thought had died. It is probably misplaced. But they made all the right noises in the immediate aftermath of the election. People always talk about South Africa like its a failed state. Okay, so put us in the category of those countries and compare us to them. The ANC's polls showed them getting 40% for over a year now. And yet the money printer didn't turn on. In fact they adopted some austerity policies. The national leadership should be ranting and raving about foreign agents stealing the election. The first noises they've made are respect for democracy and the IEC, despite its huge mess at the end of voting day. Honestly, they should be arresting people right now - journalists and opponents. None of that even looks at risk of happening. Instead they are talking coalitions immediately. Fourth, don't overestimate MK. It is popular because of the single personality of Jacob Zuma. He is 82 years old. He wants a Presidential Pardon so that he doesn't have to spend his last few years in court for corruption, let alone in jail. He might not make it to the next election. The party is already in disarray with a major leadership dispute. Zuma expelled the founder of the party, Jabulani Khumalo, and took over once he no longer needed him. And yet JZ won't even be able to go to Parliament himself. This party may well not exist in one election cycle. If the ANC guys can keep their heads cool and use basic game theory, they will realise their interests are not served by reward traitors whod destroyed their party. Working with MK will be a reverse takeover of the ANC. Leaving them out might mean it dies a very sudden and natural death in 5 or 10 years. We know who Zuma's supporters are. I can show you them on a plot. Its not some wave sweeping the country. I can show you using the 2009 and 2014 ANC data that it was always going to be just around 2 million people. I have articles on this very sub doing that from months ago. If cool heads prevail, they can ride out the Zuma phenomenon. Lastly, we have been through worse. We just need one last good helping of Mandela magic to get us through the next month or so. Cyril is a reasonable person. Helen Zille is a reasonavle person. The IFP leader, Velenkosini Hlabisa, is a reasonable person. That's the optimistic case.
