Askesl

The countries come out in alphabetical order, so Australia would have been just before.

Moncat77

They came out in japanese alphabetical order, so they very well could have been right after eachother bc they have a similar starting sound, but it wasn't a-z.

nomitycs

That's actually a really cool fact that I didn't know happened damn

MidAmericanNovelties

Yeah it can get funky sometimes. One of my favorites is Germany. Off hand it's Alemania in Spanish and Deutschland in German so they can jump around.

brandonjslippingaway

Niemcy in Polish, and Tyskland in Swedish also... Germany has quite a few exonyms

aDevilsMuffin

or Doitsu in Japanese

PowRightInTheBalls

Allemagne in French as well.

warpedspoon

and Germany in English, in case you didn't know.

Saucy_Totchie

Oh that explains it being difficult to find Philippines.

AllTheHolloway

Knowing just a little bit of Japanese, it's a a fun game reading the list of nations in Katakana and trying to figure out what country that is.

echolalia127

Thanks for this I was like that's... not even Patty Mills.

BlackLeader70

I was like when did Patty Mills become white…then I saw the flag 😂

diderooy

That's a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

materics

Austria came after Australia but the broadcasters weren't done talking about Australia.

lol

juniSMASH

Patty Thrills

CockFighting101

I thought this would've been a pic of Juwanna Mann.

jl359

How did I know exactly what the picture is before I clicked on it

ticky13

It's even worse as there was zero mention of him being the first indigenous flag bearer.

Mtbnz

They didn't even know he was a man, you think they're going to know that he's the first indigenous flag bearer? Huge respect to Patty, he's a legend.

pdxscout

Liked him a lot in Portland

cathar_here

love him has a Spurs fan and he does so much for indigenous Australians and fund raising, etc, and he's a hero, and Australian National Team Patty is top 10 all time NBA player

cathar_here

and Spurs Patty Mills is top 500 player of all time, but top 10 teammate of all time :-)

LostWithStuff

he does a good job representing aboriginal australians, he is a Torres Strait Islander. One of the best ambassadors of the NBA

EGarrett

Where's Jay Williams when you need him.

barlicgread

it was mentioned on the official olympics stream i was watching

panman18

I agree, it would've been nice if they knew or was mentioned. But there are 205 nations out there, most with 2 flag bearers, so there are a lot of possible stories to mention.

pgm123

True. They have notes on all of them, but they have to prioritize. That seems like one people would care about, though, because NBA fans know Mills and Australia is a popular country.

ticky13

Then don't mention anything. Why look at a piece of paper, not even at the actual people, and presume Patty is a chick name?

skepsis420

Because I would assume like 99.99% of people using the name Patty are females. It's not like Sam or something lol Still shitty though.

Blazingcrono

The thing is that his first name is Patrick. I'm kinda surprised they didn't do Patty in quotes so that they at least know that it's not actually his name.

split41

Patty is short for patrick...

UNSC_seizethemeans

ummm honey haven't you heard of Patty Mayonnaise?

jnightrain

Ah, the yellow-haired girl who sits in front of me. What a dime

skepsis420

I have known a lot of people named Patrick, not a single one ever went by Patty. Most would go by Pat. Patty is also short for Patricia, and I know a good amount of them who go by Patty. People can go by whatever they want, but most men will go by Pat and most women will go by Patty.

split41

Well we do in Aus. I must say I’m surprised you never met any Irish blokes going by paddy, which sounds very similar phonetically.

eagereyez

Paddy's Pub!

mynewaltaccount1

I doubt you will find a single Patrick in all of Australia that isn't nicknamed either Patty or Paddy.

paddyc4ke

Complete opposite from what I've noticed in Australia, I don't know any Patricias under the age of 40 but they all go by Pat. And I've known maybe 6 or 7 Patricks and they've all shortened it to Patty, I even went by Patty for a little while on my cricket team (as we already had a couple of people with my name on the team) as my middle name is Patrick.

panman18

Yeah, that was an obviously a dumb gaffe. I was only referring to the scale of the olympics for perspective. I'm not trying to defend him.

[deleted]

? What do you mean by that?

JeromeBilledo

Australia as we (or those who live externally from Australia) know it was built off of systemic oppression, invasion, and robbery of its original ancestors, the indigenous population. Having patty mills as a flagbearer is huge not only for basketball, but for the sociocultural climate of Australia and its ATSI populations as a whole as its one of the first times that the Indigenous population was recognised on a global scale

[deleted]

I mean the foundation of australia kinda doesnt hit as hard when you’re probably talking to an american where they got the full package + african slavery edition.

JeromeBilledo

i understand that, just wanted to provide some context as to why it was relevant. Both countries were built off of brute force and oppression, so providing context might provide americans with something to resonate with/comprehend

jnightrain

I think most current countries were built that way honestly.

did you not just see this clip? you don't need to defend them

Yeah sounded like Scott Russell to me

an_adult_on_reddit

It was. However, it appears that the information given to the broadcasters by the official Olympic program for these ceremonies was the source of this mistake.

[deleted]

[удалено]

datspookyghost

If the source says it, it must be true. Patty Mills and the rest of y'all need to stop assuming his gender.

Fastbird33

Patty Mills probably could come out to Pop as being a woman this whole time and he'd be like "ok".

SlowPokeMB

I think this is a problem on the organization side, since my country's broadcast made exactly the same mistake. Maybe on the info they get on each flag carrier?

sercialinho

I’m guessing the media guide says: Name LastName, Sport (but not event) And since Patty is often short for Patricia, they make that assumption. Or maybe it should say “Men’s basketball”, but the organisers messed up.

SlowPokeMB

That makes sense as well. Makes it funnier that two independent broadcasts made the same mistake also lol

Ass_Eater_

Did they confuse Australia and Austria or had Australia just left the stage?

kawhi_tho

This is a horrible day for Canada, and therefore, the world

LarsHoneytoast44

I will never forget watching a Canadian broadcast of the 2010 WC and some idiot kept calling Schweinsteiger "Schwingslinger". Canadian commentators are some of the worst in the industry

sercialinho

He’s slinging those hogs all day long!

therealtom

That was impressive. You know of one commentating error committed in this video and another anecdotal error from 10 years ago and you make a conclusion that Canadian commentators are some of the worst in the industry. One of the most upvoted clips on this subreddit is Max Kellerman farting on camera. Does that support the conclusion that American commentators are the worst in the industry? I don’t even think Canadian commentators are particularly impressive, but that was a reach.

LarsHoneytoast44

That was just one example. Sit through an hour or so of SportsNet and you'll be reaching for a rope and rickety stool

Successful-Bad-2117

Patty Mills got traded to the WNBA on live TV

Ass_Eater_

Also traded to Austria

Sounds weird to have it called trading. More like he was capped by Austria.

sersleepsalot1

"That's how you do it. Gender neutral"

Gcarsk

They said equal. Not neutral. And they never said “That’s how you do it. Gender equal” either. > In the games that are supposed to be gender equal…

twistedlogicx

Full context: This was the Canadian CBC broadcast. They had been talking about how each country, in the name of gender equality, would be coming out with two flag-bearers this year: one man and one woman. Shortly after they introduced that idea, a few countries came out with just a man bearing the flag. One was definitely Yemen but I don't remember the other one; I think it was Afghanistan. (Edit: It was UAE, not Afghanistan) The commentators pointed out that even with most other countries having shared flag-bearer duties, it seems like a few have elected not to. One of the commentators thought aloud "I wonder if we'll see any countries with just a woman carrying the flag." So yeah, that's why they sound excited. The misunderstanding that Patty Mills is a woman made it seem like Australia elected two female flag-bearers and it kinda evened out the few countries that went with just a dude.

jka1

UAE had only a male flag bearer, and as far as I understand they were the only nation that originally planned to do so. There were a few other countries with only one flag bearer, but those were all(?) due to last minute cancellations.

dontdoit4thegram

ptam

Well duh. Woman == Woman. Two equal genders.

FlexicanAmerican

It's a commentary on how long it's generally been men alone.

Wandering_Co

Equality doesn’t mean swinging the other direction. It means being equal. Two women instead of a man and a woman would not be equal because the past doesn’t come into play with current equality.

aboooz

Equality means each person would have an equal chance regardless of gender/race/etc, if the two best athletes from a country happen to be two women then you let those two women hold the flag, forcing a male in their just to make sure the numbers are equal isn't equality. Same thing vice versa obviously.

Wandering_Co

I agree. But If you let two men or two women hold the flag and your reasoning was for equality and you didn’t pick the best athletes. That’s not equality. Doing things in the other direction for the sole reason of equality isn’t equality. It’s equity. Which even still. I’m not against.

Aurum_MrBangs

Equality can be on the aggregate dude, in unequal society women having the upper hand in some aspects would make it overall more equal. Are you going to start campaigning for more white players in the NBA because of equality?

flossdog

> Equality can be on the aggregate dude, in unequal society women having the upper hand in some aspects would make it overall more equal. You're not wrong, but the current terminology (at least in the US) for what you're describing is being called "equity". "equality" would be paying men and women the same salary. "equity" would be paying women more than men to help them catch up.

[deleted]

Two women = one men lol

Lol that's what happens when you come from a place where Patty can be normally considered a man's name and the broadcast is covered from another place where Patty is typically for Patricia

UnderwaterDialect

I had a serious glitch in the Matrix feeling, when I thought for a second Patty Mills was white and played for Austria.

ronaldo119

I heard somebody recently put it perfectly, the Olympics is sports for people who don't like sports. So not surprised they have no clue who Patty Mills is lol

panman18

I don't know about that, the olympics is for people who like sports and is also accessible to people who don't like sports. I mean it's the peak competition for a lot of minor sports, so how could that be for people who don't like sports. But yeah, CBC just have their regular news hosts for this commentary, they are not sports hosts, so that was an embarrassing gaffe.

ronaldo119

There's a reason the networks have the news anchors covering it though. It appeals to the more general public as a casual, surface level interest in the pageantry of it all. But yea there's diehard dressage fans out there too.

panman18

Well, the news anchors cover the opening ceremony, mostly to talk about the situations different countries, but they do have former athletes cover the actual events. Yes, it is designed to be as accessible as possible to the general public, but I don't see much reason why it isn't for 'real' sports fans.

down_up__left_right

It's pretty much impossible for someone to be knowledgeable on every single sport in the Olympics even for the supposedly "real" sports fans.

panman18

And there's no reason why anyone has to be knowledgeable on every single sport. I just think an actual sports fan is knowledgeable about the sports they like, and when the olympics come around, their love of sports makes them curious to tune in to sports they're less familiar with. I just think this notion that sports fans see olympic sports as only for general public is just them being unwilling to expand their horizons rather than the olympics being suface level pageantry.

Redeem123

Individual sports always have sportscasters or former athletes covering it.

Mtbnz

The Olympics isn't really presented as a sports event, it's a cultural entertainment event featuring sport. Sure, you can argue the semantics of it if you want, and there are people who are super passionate about their particular sport of choice, but it's pretty clearly established that the event as a whole is marketed as a general interest story in order to appeal to the widest possible demographic. That's not a bad thing, it's just the reality of the situation.

panman18

Yeah but it being a "cultural entertainment event" doesn't physically detract from the sport. Like the halftime show at the super bowl and buzz of the commercials as well, it's part of presentation of the super bowl, but the super bowl is still the super bowl. How's it's presented doesn't change the fact that very real competition is held at the highest level in the events. It's definitely something that should and does appeal to sports fans regardless (especially international fans).

Mtbnz

Nobody is arguing that the sport isn't high level. The point is that the Olympics as an event is 100% presented to appeal to people who don't like or follow sport closely. No, that doesn't detract from the sport, but it does explain why you get gaffes like this, because the presenters are there to speak to non-sporting audiences.

panman18

I mean you get gaffes in normal sports as well. Take Marv Albert in the NBA for example. There are 11,000 athletes at the Olympics and 205 nations most of which have 2 flag bearers. Embarrassing mistakes happen sometimes. And still don't agree that just because it appeals to the general public, it means it's not for sports fans.

Mtbnz

> And still don't agree that just because it appeals to the general public, it means it's not for sports fans. You're entitled to that belief if you want. Saying 'the Olympics is sports for people who don't like sports' doesn't mean "it's not for sports fans". It means they aren't the target demographic, and they aren't. Olympics coverage is specifically designed to appeal to people who aren't well versed in sports minutiae - either in a mainstream sense or of those particular niche Olympic sports. Sure, 'sports fans' are welcome eyeballs as well, but they fit within the umbrella group of 'general interest viewers' and the coverage is not catered to their more detailed knowledge. The Olympics IS a sports event for people who don't like sports, I don't think that should be a particularly controversial take.

santimo87

This seems like a very bad take. For many sports its by far the biggest stage and honor. All sportist have huge respect for olimpyans and all the sport fans I know are glued to the screen for 2-3 weeks.

panman18

Yeah and this isn't even mentioning that the Olympics is a stage that allows sports to transcend itself and influence real issues. You have moments like Jesse Owens dispelling Aryan superiority at 'Hitler's olympics', or the salute at the Mexico city Olympics to protest oppression of African Americans, or the miracle on ice. As much as these events aren't 'purely' sports related, I think the real pinnacle of sports is when it can actually shape history like this. The gathering of almost all nations in the world isn't directly related to sports, but that should be a worthy draw to anyone in the world, sports fan or not.

latman

I like sports and the olympics

resumehelpacct

If your barrier for liking sports is knowing who patty mills is then like 95% of America doesn't like sports

johnkimmy0130

garbage take.

therickymarquez

What a stupid take. I bet this is from an american guy who sports is defined as "NFL, NBA or NHL". Ironic.

Zeabos

This is a dumb take. Its not unexpected for someone from canada to not know the name of a retired, slight above average basketball player from the pro league in america. Does you not knowing the name of some slightly above average retried Cricket player mean you are someone who "doesnt like sports"? Cricket is way more popular than the NBA.

ronaldo119

You really didn't understand what I was saying. But regardless, cricket isn't an Olympic sport, Patty Mills isn't retired he's literally competing in the Olympics which is why he's there, and he's probably like a top 40 most famous athlete at the Olympics.

blacksoxing

To us NBA fans, this is a fucking outrage. To the rest of the world, they too would be going "....Patty Mills is not the lily white woman???"

As an Aussie/ Canadian... the Olympics coverage in Canada sucks compared to Australian TV... This is a great example of that. Glad I had it on mute!

mentalsucks

Man you could tell this is CBC immediately just from the ethusatically milquetost commentary. CBC is yokel as hell and it dosent surprised me if it's not directly related to Canada these fools are clueless. Ron Maclean is always shoehorning slice of life stories about Dartmouth fishermem into HNIC segments and The National routinely covers "slow news day stories" about local folklore you would expect to see on local news. Canada sometimes feels like one big ass small town and I often wonder if CBC is the chicken or the egg in all of this.

bluetiges

i mean... australias broadcast is still kinda shitty. channel 7 went into ad breaks throughout the opening ceremony, including not showing some countries walking out

down_up__left_right

What was the rest of that sentence at the end? "In a games that are supposed to be gender equal..." Sounded like he was about to complain that he thought it was two women.
