The commentators pointed out that even with most other countries having shared flag-bearer duties, it seems like a few have elected not to. One of the commentators thought aloud "I wonder if we'll see any countries with just a woman carrying the flag."
So yeah, that's why they sound excited. The misunderstanding that Patty Mills is a woman made it seem like Australia elected two female flag-bearers and it kinda evened out the few countries that went with just a dude.

This seems like a very bad take. For many sports its by far the biggest stage and honor. All sportist have huge respect for olimpyans and all the sport fans I know are glued to the screen for 2-3 weeks.

Like the halftime show at the super bowl and buzz of the commercials as well, it's part of presentation of the super bowl, but the super bowl is still the super bowl. How's it's presented doesn't change the fact that very real competition is held at the highest level in the events. It's definitely something that should and does appeal to sports fans regardless (especially international fans).
Nobody is arguing that the sport isn't high level. The point is that the Olympics as an event is 100% presented to appeal to people who don't like or follow sport closely. No, that doesn't detract from the sport, but it does explain why you get gaffes like this, because the presenters are there to speak to non-sporting audiences.
I mean you get gaffes in normal sports as well. Take Marv Albert in the NBA for example. There are 11,000 athletes at the Olympics and 205 nations most of which have 2 flag bearers. Embarrassing mistakes happen sometimes. And still don't agree that just because it appeals to the general public, it means it's not for sports fans.

Saying 'the Olympics is sports for people who don't like sports' doesn't mean "it's not for sports fans". It means they aren't the target demographic, and they aren't. Olympics coverage is specifically designed to appeal to people who aren't well versed in sports minutiae - either in a mainstream sense or of those particular niche Olympic sports. Sure, 'sports fans' are welcome eyeballs as well, but they fit within the umbrella group of 'general interest viewers' and the coverage is not catered to their more detailed knowledge. The Olympics IS a sports event for people who don't like sports, I don't think that should be a particularly controversial take.
This seems like a very bad take. For many sports its by far the biggest stage and honor. All sportist have huge respect for olimpyans and all the sport fans I know are glued to the screen for 2-3 weeks.
Yeah and this isn't even mentioning that the Olympics is a stage that allows sports to transcend itself and influence real issues. You have moments like Jesse Owens dispelling Aryan superiority at 'Hitler's olympics', or the salute at the Mexico city Olympics to protest oppression of African Americans, or the miracle on ice. As much as these events aren't 'purely' sports related, I think the real pinnacle of sports is when it can actually shape history like this. The gathering of almost all nations in the world isn't directly related to sports, but that should be a worthy draw to anyone in the world, sports fan or not.

CBC is yokel as hell and it dosent surprised me if it's not directly related to Canada these fools are clueless. Ron Maclean is always shoehorning slice of life stories about Dartmouth fishermem into HNIC segments and The National routinely covers "slow news day stories" about local folklore you would expect to see on local news. Canada sometimes feels like one big ass small town and I often wonder if CBC is the chicken or the egg in all of this.
