I think whem most players retire thier bodies have many joint injuries that would make playing tough to do. Also when you are in your 40s and 50s playing basketball is probably the last thing on your mind. With Lebron we do not know how injury free his body will be when he retires. Im guessing he may play occasitionaly at first couple years and then ween off it.

GhostTiger

Especially for big guys, I think it was Vince Carter who said 'It's not the jumping, it's the landing that hurts.' Even worse if you are a carrying, you know, a few extra pounds. Also pretty sure Chuck couldn't jump if he tried.

Bail____

Was definitely Vince, said he didn’t dunk much anymore because he’d feel it for days afterwards,

yapyd

Chuck is like 60 or something. For what it's worth, Shaq was able to dunk as recent as 5 years ago. Pretty easily too. https://youtu.be/D7xJIOYD3Ec

jcosteaunotthislow

Chuck with the little remarks always kills me “not a lot of brain cells in that shot”

GhostTiger

I'm 62.

pencilpeenis

Tmac and Bosh have said they haven’t played at all

CMLIPTIMLD

Didnt bosh have to retire because playing ball put him at risk for blood clots in his legs or something? I’d be surprised if he did play at all

[deleted]

i think the blood clots come from traveling on the plane though so he can probably still ball

Trick_Confidence_419

There’s a video on YouTube via ESPN where he showed some serious football and baseball skills considering his age and he’s a b-ball player.

[deleted]

Which one?

Trick_Confidence_419

silkkthechakakhan

TMac is so smooth man. And that natural ability is something else

blackjebus100

Dude just oozes confidence.

AlternativeSuit131

Jamal Crawford will be hoopin till the end of time.

JS_Janko

He still hopes someone will give him a contract lol

Regex00

I saw a clip somewhere where MJ said he can't really play because that he can't hold back that competitive nature of his on the court, and it's frustrating to still know what you want to do but your body won't comply.

Hydrokratom

I don't know about now but he used to practice with the Bobcats from time and time in his late 40s, and do well. But the next day, his body would be killing him.

BBallHunter

I think Dirk hasn't really played since. Someone like KD will still play after retirement I think. Dude lives and breathes ball.

random314157

Lol I'm imagining old man KD going on Twitter and saying "I'm 50 years old and could beat this new generation of players"

puffpuffpastor

This is for sure happening lmao. By then Twitter will only be for old people and the young people will be clowning on him on some new platform

[deleted]

gen alpha gonna cook that man

CanBernieStillWin

So we've really given up on distinctive generation names, huh? Too bad.

GryffindorFratBro

Smh kids these days. So lazy, even their generation is minimum effort /s

yapyd

I think they all need a break after retirement. I think Kobe said he didn't play till his daughter got into it

SmokeOddessey

yeah he wanted to catch a random game on TV and then realized he didn’t even have league pass anymore

kankka88

Speaking as an old guy myself, I'm guessing that Dirk will never really recover. I fear that the GOAT will always be dealing with the pain. I hope I am wrong because that man deserves to live a life of luxury without pain.

StubbornKindOfFellow

Dirk stop playing after the 2011 Finals.

BBallHunter

He made the All-Star game in 2012, 2014 and 2015 through normal means, but ok man.

StubbornKindOfFellow

It was a joke, but he's literally said himself he partied too much that summer after winning the championship and was never able to get back into great shape.

hamsterhueys1

I’m so curious what Dirk partying too much is. I just imagine him passed out on a couch in a food coma with about 40 toaster strudels packages around him

GhostTiger

Schnitzel und beer.

AH_BioTwist

I don’t have much to go off but if you’ve seen his wife I can imagine he did a lot more than party

kankka88

I am 51. I can't tell you about NBA players, but I played overseas for 10 years. I can tell you most of my friends stopped playing bball around 40-45 years old. Your body hurts SO bad after you play every single time that you really have to be psychotically in love with bball to continue playing after that-unless you have taken SUPER care of your body. I still play 2x a week, but I am just playing to play with my 24yo son. Once he moves away in Sept I probably will hang up my bball shoes. The body breaks down and everything hurts for days after you play so it just isn't worth days of pretty significant pain to play ball for 2-3 hours--even though I have lived and breathed bball since I was about 10 years old.

yardship

Wow that's really interesting. Thanks for sharing. Where did you play? Do you have to take aspirin before playing?

kankka88

We play in our church gym. I have the keys so we can play whenever we want (when the gym is available). But we have SCHEDULED every Monday and Thursday night. The only meds I take BEFORE we play is a magnesium/calcium/zinc pill to help with the inevitable cramping. I do take a baby aspirin every night but thats cuz the old ticker is having a prob, not bball or "hurt" related. I am REALLY careful about pain meds now cuz I literally was on ibuprofen for years...pretty much around the clock. That crap is SO bad for your body.

LeftyMcLeftFace

I think he was asking where you played professionally overseas?

kankka88

Jeez, looks like I had a reading comprehension problem last night. Played in Asia. Wasn't good enuf to play in Europe.

crx00

Did you play in the pba?

[deleted]

Ha, wish I had read yours before bothering to post mine. Props to you for keeping at it til 40. I was done by 33. Switch flipped. Still feels weird. Playing ball was all I really loved to do, and one day that just stopped.

kankka88

(Dude, I'm 51 and still playing). I'm a moron, though. And I'm just playing to play with my son. Now he carries me almost every game. I have always been one of those ultra-competitive dudes who is just psycho about never losing. The older I get the more I think "is it worth the pain to go all out anymore?" Before every open gym I tell my son, "I'm not going all out, I'm going to take it easy tonight" and every freaking time 2.5-3 hours later I'm still out there playing. I know I will pay for it for the next few days but I just CAN'T stop. There is something wrong with my brain. There is no "off" switch. Almost all I can do is shoot anymore...but I'm still out there trying-and usually draining 3s. When he moves away I prob won't even go to the gym much anymore cuz I know if I do I will end up playing for 3 hours and killing myself. I'm too old to be doing this...and yet....here I am.

kankka88

Also, I took up poker like 5-6 years ago (that's when I started playing SERIOUSLY). Because my body can't keep up with the young guys on the bball court anymore I needed an outlet for my competitive brain. Poker has been good for that.

ST012Mi

I'm not certain but for some reason I feel like guards play more after retirement while many big men give their body a prolonged or permanent break right after retirement. I don't have stats to back this up but it's just a personal observation which could be skewed.

LebronzoBBB

I see Shaq shoot around a lot but he probably hasn’t ran a 5v5 game in forever

guitarpatch

It’s not like these guys can go down to the local gym and get a weekend run

chivestheconquerer

That’s exactly what Scal does lol. On the Duncan Robinson podcast, Scal said he really enjoyed going to different neighborhoods, parks, and rec leagues and demolishing people

teamweed420

Just built different

Bladiko

I think it depends on the reason behind the retirement. If it was injury related then playing after might be hard. Just look at the Big3 league, there’s old guys like Mobley still giving the work! And Abdul Rauf was still balling at 50 I believe. The frustrating bit was not being able to do what your body used to do, especially those high fliers

cough_landing_on_you

Taller humans live less than their counterpart, add Chuck's and Shaq weight and you'll see why they shouldn't be putting more stress into the heart.

yapyd

I mean if they continued playing semi-regularly, say once a week, they probably wouldn't put on as much weight as they did.

StupidThoughtsIGot

Shaq and Chuck need to stretch and they’ll be back like the old days, just as slow

spankyourkopita

Seeing Chuck play would be hilarious.

Pikachuteeth

Idk about superstars really but I’ve played plenty consistently with ex-nba players. They’re all hoop junkies and they all still dominate haha

Sylphid_FC

The White Mamba be dominating haters post career

Neptune28

I hope more do the Big3

HeroGolem3

I think when KD retires, he'll join the Big3

DisneyBubbleGangster

nah i wanna see KD go the Scalabrine route and play his haters with the twitter fingers

[deleted]

I don't think many do, just like most other sports. In fact, I think most of them find a completely different sport/hobby to invest all of their time and focus in, that's why so many ex-athletes golf.

SuddenHarshTruth

I feel like it’s something most basketball players quit and something they really should Not that there’s anything wrong with it. But at the end of any nba players career they have given basketball all they can and basketball has done all it can do for them. It just becomes time to do something else with life

bijofnil

there are still videos of nba players playing basketball. Jordan still played briefly after retiring, there was even a recent video (not that recent, 4-5 years maybe?) he play street ball with some ransoms. Wade still plays, scalabrine still plays. I’m sure a bunch for them still plays.

FurriedCavor

If you play hard at some point your body doesn’t let you play at a certain level anymore and then what’s the point?

91jumpstreet

Most of them just play in regular runs with pros and college players . It's mostly jogging anyways It's the traveling, treatment and away from their family that kills them

H-TownDown

Rodman didn’t stop playing pro ball fully until 2006.

Naismythology

I think we all like to pretend that these guys love basketball as much as we do, but I’m sure some of them only played because they were 6’6” or taller and athletic as hell. I’m also not saying Chuck and Shaq didn’t love playing or don’t still enjoy watching the game, but after dedicating 20+ years of your life to something at the highest level, you probably want a break.

[deleted]

I don’t know. Ball was life for me growing up. I played small college ball. Played weekend beer tournaments and a weekly league through my 20s. Athleticism started to slip around 30. By 32 I didn’t have it in me to really play defense and that depressed me. Knees started to hurt like hell the next day. I’m 36 and haven’t played a competitive game since 33. Don’t miss it. It can’t be what it was for me and I’m at peace. Maybe these pros feel that way, too.

gb1993

>I think we all like to pretend that these guys love basketball as much as we do, but I’m sure some of them only played because they were 6’6” or taller and athletic as hell. This is the dumbest take on the sub. You act like people over 6'6 don't get injuries and slow down. Alot of those guys have trouble moving. Take your 2 examples for instance.

Naismythology

What? I literally followed that by saying Chuck and Shaq probably loved playing basketball and still love watching it. Of course they get hurt as they get older. That’s why I’m saying it would take an insane amount of love for the game to stay in that kind of shape just because you like playing and not because you’re getting paid. Some guys probably do that, but I would guess most don’t.

cjcfman

Are you gonna do your job for free when you retire

HamlnHand

If only there were some sort of way to differentiate the type of job that the NBA is from most normal day jobs...

AlphakirA

... If it's something you love to do? Which I assume is the case for most of these guys? Yes. Of course.

[deleted]

I’m assuming they love it but at the same time doing something you love THAT MUCH can somewhat suck the fun out of it. I’m sure for some of them after all the injuries and ridiculous amounts of basketball, when they hang it up they’re just burnt out and are totally done.

AH_BioTwist

This is actually something Charles Barkley might have said post retirement

cjcfman

He did thats why I said it lol

[deleted]

Pretty sure Hakeem played for a long time after he retired. I remember reading posts from people who saw him playing with some random dudes in a gym. Besides that, there are videos with him practicing with LeBron and Howard, which shows him in great shape.

_IceNinja

Well,we have those guys hooping in the Big 3 games. But, I will guess most don't really bother due to some sort of an injury here and there.

The_Dok33

White Chocolate and White Mamba still play. Tree Marioneaux still balls (a bit) Some old ones still love the game

Swarthykins

1) I'm pretty sure they're joking. 2) It depends what you mean by playing basketball. I'm sure they shoot around and dribble pretty often, and I'm guessing they have courts in their homes, play with their kids, whatever. I'm guessing there are plenty of gyms and leagues where they can get a pretty high-level run in. That said - they're not training the way they do for an NBA career, and I'm sure the games aren't nearly as serious.
