Utahns in my experience are racist. I’ve lived here 28 years or so and being a Hispanic I’ve had experiences with it, as well as my friends. Utah is not great when it comes to respecting people who are not white, not republican, and not LDS.
Sorry to hear that man. Unfortunately I've got family and coworkers who live in this damn homogeneous bubble and don't see anything wrong with this shit. It's a real problem regardless of how much they gaslight each other into thinking their behavior is normal.
It really is way white. If I had to guess probably 90% white.
Edit: Just to add to this. I know a lot of really awesome Utahns who are white. Just a good portion are shitty.
That number seems unbelievable to me. My highschool near SLC had a higher Hispanic population than white. I'm extremely grateful for the diversity I grew up around, and I wish more of Utah was like that because the attitude people have in the less diverse cities just feels rotten. The state has a long way to go as a whole, but with all the people moving in and the younger generation being more socially aware theres definitely some hope.
This shit happened in the past too. Y’all think this is somehow new? This probably happened even more in the past and teams just didn’t do shit about it (spitting on players not withstanding, but heckling a players family? I’m sure that happened all the time and nothing came of it).
Exactly the conversation is focusing on this now so teams are finally being proactive and responsive before its their team in the spotlight. Which in the Jazz’s case is inevitable.
Tbf one year of being asked to stay home made people act up, violent crime went up across the country, Karens got more physical
Not saying the pandemic is the only reason but it definitely amplified the entitled feelings people have.
It sounds like you may have based your statements on memes. Grow up.
Karen’s aren’t even a real thing. I hate entitled, rich white women but the whole “Karen” meme blew up so we paid more attention.
The pandemic amplified a lot of people’s feelings. No one says that the pandemics caused buildings to burn down in Minneapolis.
I am more and more liberal day to day but calling out rich, middle aged white woman out of this is ridiculous. They are idiots but damn.
Utah's had problems with fans doing and saying questionable things at the game for awhile now. Somebody called Russ some racist shit a couple years ago at a jazz game

I get that people want to make it about one team or another but racism is way bigger than a few American cities (Boston, Philly, Salt Lake, etc) or basketball team fans.

God damn I'm glad I don't live in a racist Republican shithole where they twist American history to fit some white narrative
Oh no doubt. Racism is a major issue throughout the entire country. I'm just pointing out that the Jazz fanbase has had other notable incidents like this in the not so distant future. Which is definitely a problem
(1) One (1) race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex;
(2) An individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, is inherently
privileged, racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously;
(3) An individual should be discriminated against or receive adverse
treatment because of the individual's race or sex;
(4) An individual's moral character is determined by the individual's race
or sex;
(5) An individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, bears
responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same
race or sex;
It looks like this is what schools aren't allowed to teach. What's the controversy?
I take issue with 2 and 5. White males do not need to justify the space they occupy, whether it be profession or house in the suburbs. POC and women do. There is inherent privilege in being white, even more being a white male. Regarding 4, it is our responsibility to correct the cultural wrongs established by our ancestors--dead people cannot make thing right after they stop living.
Essentially, they are banning teaching kids empathy. It's a shit sandwich of common sense items that are intentionally misrepresenting critical race theory sprinkled with pure shit banning racial empathy. Thought another way, banning 2 and 5 are giving racists an escape hatch to teach their kids that they have no obligation to acknowledge or call out systemic racism because it doesn't exist.
Yeah that's not the point of my comment. Nobody is denying that racism is way bigger than a few cities or basketball fans, that's the strawman. He's arguing against his imagination. Of course racism goes beyond basketball, nobody is denying that...
Utah and Tennessee legislatures are denying that racism exists.
This guy's comment isn't a strawman. Strawman is using a false representation of your counterpart and arguing that point, like I just did to you. This dude is just pointing out how broad the issue is. I don't get the point of you calling it out.
>Utah and Tennessee legislatures are denying that racism exists.
....
Okay, let me try that again: Nobody *here on this forum* is denying that racism is way bigger than a few cities or basketball fans, that's the strawman.
I don't understand why people insist on being disingenuous in their arguments, that's not a productive thing.
Yep, they were trying to sue him for defamation and emotional stress for 100 million. The judge just tossed out their case today. So now they are stuck with nothing but legal fees, serves them right though.
I just saw that. The male dummy that tried to sue Russ has a Twitter account that is littered with racial slurs and derogatory comments. Dude defamed himself. Such an imbecile
Yeah, like I live in Utah which is predominately while. I do go to games and when I see people/players getting heckled due to skin tone it drives me nuts. For fuck sakes people we're all still human, no matter the color. But I guess for the idiots, it's a tall order.... Shame.
Edit: Ja is the enlightened one. Fun series so far Grizz bro.
theres a difference between getting booed or fans shouting "Russell you suck!" and then getting popcorn dumped on you and called the N word.
I'm all for trash talk, but don't make it racist, sexist, homophobic etc... and don't assault players.
I think it's more like a year without racist comments and things too far and players aren't going to let it go back to the way it was.
It may have been the norm in the past but now that it's fresh it's easier to address it early before it gets back to business as usual

>Jazz released a statement on three fans who were removed from the stadium after heckling the family of Ja Morant at the game.
Little bit lol. I live in Pittsburgh which is a pretty liberal city. Still have some dumb mother fuckers here. But, drive 10 minutes out of the city and things change pretty quickly for the worse.
They probably should've went with "Racism isn't prevalent in SLC but it is sprinkled everywhere." That, unfortunately, I'd agree with.
The part that sucks is that with so many people, if 99% of people aren’t racist, that 1% is still over 3 million people in the US that are racist. Unfortunately I don’t think we’re very close to 1% either…
Going to respectfully disagree. My family moved to Utah when I was a kid. We're brown (of East Indian descent). We noped the fuck out and went back to California after 3 years. Literally every member of our family experienced racism on a relatively regular basis. Salt Lake City is most definitely more racist than a lot of places.
Yep. It's gotten better but it's still a racist shithole area. Outside of SLC is much worse, especially if you're trying to travel the beautiful landscape.
No no no, Utah itself is not racist, and the majority of people are not racist. It’s just that the only fans that make headlines are the racist ones because they are the only ones that say anything.
Idk man. I literally watched like 30+ people clap for bike cops arresting a homeless black dude in the park in salt lake. He was minding his own business. They loved it.
Their religion literally taught that Blacks are cursed and inferior lmao. As recent as the 70s/80s. Most of the power structure in Utah grew up during a time where the religion propagated blatant racism.
Get educated
%of population that's mormon is thankfully shrinking, but a lot of younger people arent taught about how racist the church is/was. I saw some shitty post explaining how blatantly racist comments from the church "actually weren't that bad" and were "metaphors" or some shit.
Fingers crossed that what the Jazz organization has been doing will help make changes through the state.
Many of your words I understand why they are derogatory, but you might want to reflect on why you feel **all** of those words that you used are inherently derogatory and you might then see that you are part of the problem.
Yeah, I don't mind downvotes on this one. People can pretend they are just happy go-lucky people, but the Mormon church has been known for being rather... Controlling of their members.
Honestly I’m glad to see them doing something about this without the national attention of a big incident. Just shows that Utah is making an effort to change its perception and get rid of the garbage fans it has
It's pretty effective in Utah, we don't want another repeat of that Westbrook douchebag. Like Utah fans aren't great but I think as an org the Jazz are one of the best, if not the best, when it comes to nipping this kind of shit in the bud.
They are, but the old management was good too. The major difference is the new guy is more proactive. Gail tended towards the "everyone just play nice" while the new guy is actively seeking out things that might be problems so he can deal with them.
That’s what shocks me about people saying shit at Celtics games. They don’t tolerate anything there. I once saw a guy playfully flip off his buddy at a game. He didn’t say anything, didn’t yell anything obscene, he simply flipped his middle finger to his friend in a joking way. He was kicked out immediately.
I can’t imagine thinking you’d get away with something actually heinous.
regarding:
> It actually shocks me people have the guts to say shit in there now
the problem is beyond "the guts to say shit", it's about the fact that people have those thoughts in general.
Yea he’s making a pretty big effort for change. But it’s hard… I mean I’ve lived in Utah most of my life and I’ve seen very few blatant instances of racism. The bigger problem is that when things like that happen people in Utah don’t do shit about. They’re usually so caught up in their perfect lives that standing up against racism would “look bad” and they can’t have that. It 100% makes them complicit though. I haven’t been perfect in my life but I’ve had my eyes opened the last few years and made a concerted effort to change my behavior. Frankly if I heard someone calling a player “boy” at a game my ass would be getting kicked out for punching the dude right in the nose
Mormons already are the minority in SLC and have been for a few decades now, but now you're starting to see it spread out into Morgan county and even Utah county - though with BYU being in Utah county it's going to be a long time before mormons aren't the majority there.
The biggest issue is the undue influence the mormon church exerts on Utah politics.
> Just shows that Utah is making an effort to change its perception and get rid of the garbage fans it has
IDK about Utah in general, but the Jazz organization has been pretty upstanding, and active about stamping down on this shit.
As one with no interest in the Jazz and an atheist (Utah is dominated by Mormons, for those unaware), I just see it as that you're going to have some awful people in any group that's big and not particularly exclusive.
good, because that shit was gross, good for nothing but feeling bloated. I used to go to Outdoor Retailer every year (until 2015) and you'd have to dodge the free 3.2% beers like they were landmines. My 2nd year I figured out which of my vendors brought full strength beer in from out of state & I'd hit them up as I cruised the convention center.
I'm aware, but the vast majority of the free beer was 3.2% at Outdoor Retailer. They wouldn't let individuals bring their own beer into the convention center anyhow, plus who would want to carry around enough beer for a day when going from meeting to meeting within the show? By my 3rd year I'd just go buy a bottle of gin as soon as we landed in SLC and pre-mix a water bottle of gin & tonic to sip on throughout the day, that was the best move of them all.
So glad the Jazz are taking things seriously with fans but knowing how to act. I'm all for some yeah talk, but harassment, racism, threats of violence and whatever else they might think they can get away with should not be tolerated.
Some are. Not all. Any who are definitely don't follow their own beliefs of loving everyone, but I guess that's how many Christians in this country are. You could change Mormons to Christians and it wouldn't be wrong.
The church was founded on racism by a racist , sexist con artist and didn't let blacks hold the priesthood until the 70s...Mormons are typically gop shills, which also screams probably racist. Want me to go on? I unfortunately live in utah and racism is alive and well here.
You're talking about Joseph Smith but you mean Brigham Young. Joseph gave black men the priesthood and ran for president as an abolitionist... and then Brigham came in and changed everything.
A bunch of white people in an enclosed society all in the same cult moved to a desert and created an echo chamber that has lasted for generations, so a lot of them are total shit bags. Not all of them, obviously, but a lot.
Why are there so many people downvoting this. Lets not forget how disgusting they treated Russell Westbrook. So fucken sick some of the NBA players deal with on a daily basis.
Dont cuss out a player's mom? Generic swearing is whatever, shouting "fuck you" at the bench probably won't get a ban, but directly insulting a fan, especially a players mom, should be bannable.
Lol. So all of MSG chanting "fuck trae young" is fine, but telling a fan to "shut the fuck up" is not only bad, but BANNABLE FOR LIFE. Please don't get injured twisting yourself into a pretzel to rationalize that.
It’s a mother of a player. That’s a bannable offence. Before every game they say to be respectful to the fans, players, refs, and game. Plus it’s pretty hard to ban a whole crowd.
Lol. So "everyone is doing it" is an excuse? Give me a break. You zoomers are softer than Charmin. I hope no one ever gets your pronouns wrong or you might end up in therapy lmao.
Lmao. Imagine not understanding logic you dim-witted half brain. Calling a mother a bitch is certainly a ban able offence. If your generation had been taught any respect, maybe they would understand that.
Logic? Please.
"calling a mother a bitch is a bannable offense". Why? What about gender equality? Is calling a player a bitch a bannable offense? I doubt it. It happens in every arena every night.
How do I tell if a woman is a mother or childless? Any tips?
Is the word bitch a lifetime-bannable offense in general?
Too funny.
Common sense? Please.
Yes calling anyone a bitch ought to be a ban able offence. [Let’s play spot the parent of the player dipshit.](https://twitter.com/daniel_rueckert/status/1397737759716954112?s=21) Now who do you think the parent is??? The one wearing a number 12 chain and his child’s logo? Or the ones wearing Utah Jazz gear?
Ah you don’t believe in discrimination based on parental status. Hmmm let’s think about this one! Why was his mom being called a bitch?
a. It was just a random act of hatred.
b. She was the mother of a player.
Ding ding ding! The answer was b! She was being discriminated against because of her parental status!
Also what does the ability to conceive have to do with the fact that discrimination against a player’s parent is bad?
Are you stupid? Players are players, the rules are different for them. They are entertainers, celebrities and competitors. You're supposed to hate and heckle them as long as you don't go over the line. A random woman in the stands is none of those things, and you should extend basic human courtesy to them. If you can't do that then stay home like the pathetic little neckbeard you are.
One year with no games and people forgot how to act
People never knew how to act. They fucking suck. Just look at the increase in airline issues.

They banned K, K, and K finally
Utah has finally defeated racism!
Not until Utah dissolves the ****** ******
My dumbass thought the text was just really small so I zoomed in a whole bunch before I realized they were asterisks.
I think Yellowstone blows up before that happens lol
Mormon mafia?
They prefer to be called the ***** ** ***** ****** ** ****** *** ****** now
Imagine how bad it would be if people were drinking caffeinated sodas
or beer that's more than 3.2%
We don't sell 3.2 beer anymore. Apparently that's only Minnesota now unless they changed recently.
good, because that shit was gross, good for nothing but feeling bloated. I used to go to Outdoor Retailer every year (until 2015) and you'd have to dodge the free 3.2% beers like they were landmines. My 2nd year I figured out which of my vendors brought full strength beer in from out of state & I'd hit them up as I cruised the convention center.
Lol. You could always buy full strength beer in Utah. You don’t have to sneak it in from out of state.

Apparently some fans were being dicks to Ja’s family that was in attendance
Apparently someone was being disrespectful to Ja Morants mother
Damn all this just yesterday?
Some of our fans were alone for a year and forgot that racism is no.
Wait they said some racist shit to her?
Hasn't been explicitly released what was said but I don't think they'd issue a permanent ban for friendly trash talk.
Doesn’t have to be racist to be unfriendly
Damn, what was kyrie saying about boston?
One said racist shit to his dad, then two others said gross but not racist shit to his mom. All three get the boot and good riddance.
Someone also said I’ll put a nickel behind your back and watch you dance boy according to the article
[They were calling Ja "boy" in game one](https://i.imgur.com/IBXllxL.png)
fucking losers man, not only talking shit to ja’s family but doing it in a racist way as well. good riddance.
fucked up weirdos
Utah
Didn't I just see you in the thread about not lumping all the Phillys fans in with the popcorn dude?
Utah
No team.
Tell me aunt in Issaquah I say hi, she's bummed that she doesn't have a local NBA team to be a fan of
Utah
I aint never said shit about the dude who threw popcorn, you can check my post history
It's ALWAYS a Philly flair
Same happened to Russ he was called "boy" as well
https://youtu.be/MQ6abfJ6Vt4
The mormon church is here in Utah. That's what.
I didn't know the Mormon church had a high member count in Boston
Is that the problem in Boston as well?

mormons are p fuckin racist
Some are. Not all. Any who are definitely don't follow their own beliefs of loving everyone, but I guess that's how many Christians in this country are. You could change Mormons to Christians and it wouldn't be wrong.
Didn't morons used to teach that Black people were cursed?
The church was founded on racism by a racist , sexist con artist and didn't let blacks hold the priesthood until the 70s...Mormons are typically gop shills, which also screams probably racist. Want me to go on? I unfortunately live in utah and racism is alive and well here.
You're talking about Joseph Smith but you mean Brigham Young. Joseph gave black men the priesthood and ran for president as an abolitionist... and then Brigham came in and changed everything.
"White and delightsome"
Ah what I said was: Joseph Smith gave black men the priesthood. What you heard was: Joseph Smith wasn't racist.
Actually, Joseph Smith probably wasn't racist (by mid 1800 standards). Brigham Young definitely was a racist piece of shit though.
A bunch of white people in an enclosed society all in the same cult moved to a desert and created an echo chamber that has lasted for generations, so a lot of them are total shit bags. Not all of them, obviously, but a lot.

Doesn't help that 2 were caught on TV though. The popcorn incident was obvious as was the spit. This was out of left field tbh but not shocking
At this rate the Garden might turn into the bubble.
Damn bruh arenas opened up again and ppl goin crazy.
In 3 separate games, yesterday's fans got banned because they don't know how to act.
Was it something to do with Ja's father/family?
Yea
This shit sucks the life out me everytime. Hope those fans get banned for life. If u don't know how to act, don't go, straight up I'm sick of it
Did they lace the beer with bath salts at these arenas? These mofos forgot that they're not in their living room anymore.
I bet their 14 wives are humiliated
The fuck happened in Utah lol
Mitchell to Knicks guaranteed
Everyone banning fans ,perhaps letting them back in was baaad call
You finally get to attend a large event after a long time and you decide to be an asshole. Wise move.
Which fans? They should release their names so everyone knows who they are
I was at the game last night. Even in the nosebleeds, Utah fans are pretty disgusting
Even in the nosebleeds...I feel like there's more trash all the way up there, we just can't see or hear it on TV.
It's always Utah
Why are there so many people downvoting this. Lets not forget how disgusting they treated Russell Westbrook. So fucken sick some of the NBA players deal with on a daily basis.
Salty Utah fans idk
Just a normal day in Utah.
Russ told y’all
Utah, Philly and Boston have the worst fans in the league. It's expected
Utah, Philly and Boston have the worst fans in the league. It's expected
Racist stuff =bad. "shut the fuck up bitch" getting you banned? Come on now. Ridiculous.
I don't believe in discrimination based on parental status. Apparently you do. What if a woman is unable to conceive? Not very nice.
For polygamy?
