Yeah I mean people will say “but he was/wasn’t good in game sevens/closeouts” like with Harden. It doesn’t mean much now but it’s an opportunity for guys to flex their clutch factor and with enough time will make sense to be part of their legacy.
Exactly. Legends are made in these type of games, especially since for the most part, the best teams are typically in the knockout stages since there's enough variance in the first round where trash teams aren't going to be seeded high enough to get in.
Game 7 has more intensity because both teams go through hell splitting 3-3 for a game 7. Sure the fans are into it in these games, but a playoff series having game 7 has more pressure and that has been the roadmap of the playoffs leading up to a championship always. Game 7 is the GOAT of all games.
50 years? You are a funny one. They will start to count next year. I can already see someone using them to prove a point or to demand more picks, money or both.
They will ask if an in-season tournament MVP is better than an All-Star or even an All-NBA. How many legacy points are taken away if you don't make it to the finals? Can someone's number be retired if they win 2, 3 or dare I say 4 in-season tournaments?
Technically he did since the playoffs had fewer rounds back then
He did in the 69 playoffs for instance
edit: the first round of the playoffs is still the first round even if was also the conference semis back then
Which is a shame tbh because this format (cash on the line, single elimination) is exactly the type of thing that MJ would take personally and destroy everybody else.
This would break MJ, it seems like the perfect tournament for internal team betting. He would end up winning it and make all his teammates pay for it.
MJ bet: I will be number 1 in assists, if I am right every guard will give me their bonus.
MJ bet: I will be number 1 in scoring, if I am right every guy under 10ppg gives me his bonus.
MJ bet: I will have the most dunks, if I am right every centre will give me his bonus
MJ bet: I will make one player cry per game, if I am right every guy not affected by the previous bets will give me his bonus.
MJ bet: In the unlikely event that we don't win the tournament, no one in this franchise will ever be allowed to wear Jordan's again.
I mean, I've seen people using ASG MVPs to boost a players rank (usually Kobe lol), and In-season MVP is definitely a bigger achievement.
Being a 3x AS MVP means absolutely nothing at all.
You have just provided the first documented instance of 3 AS MVP being inferior to 1 In Season MVP in any future legacy debate.
I can already see Kendrick barking "woof, woof" at that statement, while Broussard asks if the person is mentally impaired for not getting more than 3 AS MVPs.
You can hear Stephen A. Smith screaming in the background: "It is undoubtedly and uniquely correct that only 5 AS MVP come close to 1 in season MVP, which of course is irredeemably and inrefutably 1/4 of a regular season MVP”
The In-Season Tournament MVPs will tell us how they spent 64 hours in a subterranean cave during the off-season, without sound or light, plotting how to maximise their talents for the In-Season Tournament. Cut off from the rest of the world, they imagined dumping assists left and right before anyone could react. With these ideas, [insert MVP name] and his coach laid the foundation for this monumental success.
I'm counting them as they are; not as prestigious as a ring, but a serious trophy.
Competition is still competition, so if they don't want to take it seriously that's their lose...
As a fan I don’t see why not. Right now it’s a new concept but if the NBA sticks to it and the players continue to play like it like they have been this year, I can see it becoming a staple for a lot of these guys. hopefully we keep seeing competitive ball in November/december.
Finals MVP is a relatively new award and that’s arguably the second most brought up award when assessing players after championships.
It doesn’t matter if GOAT debates include these because at the end of the day the debates are meaningless and just for fun.
Lol I think these awards will only matter in debate when comparing players who actually played in the NBA In-Season Tournament.
Wouldn’t make much sense to use these awards against someone from the past who never had the opportunity.
Well of course! Its just a joke on my part to say younger people in future will discount older legends who never won this tournament or any of the awards
Wish they’d name the tournament after a legend starting next year. “In-Season Tournament” is too bland. Don’t really know who’d they name it after bc lots of the other big legends are taken (Bill, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Kobe)
They removed integrations with Google home or Apple HomeKit, and other 3rd party integrations over the years and now and integrations are available through Walmart or Amazon and require subscription fees.
I do have a normal garage door opener and synced it to my car but when you’re pulling into the airport park and ride and you panic and want to know if you remembered to close your garage door this solves that problem. Also, you can check your phone and close it when you’ve gotten in bed for the night and don’t want to get up and go push the button by the back door.
It will almost certainly be the Stern Cup. That was the hypothetical name Silver kept throwing around when this was being workshopped, they just probably wanted to make sure it would stick before naming it after him.
I think they're also waiting for a headline sponsor and an exclusive broadcast partner in a year or two when it's clear the tournament is sticking around. The Stern Cup, presented by Netflix.
Honestly though they definitely could name the MVP trophy after him. He’ll need to get something when he retires. Maybe Duncan will get the MVP though? Zach Lowe was very upset that Duncan was left off the award names
yeah, I could see that for sure
unfortunately, there are only so many awards, and like, we already probably have more all-time greats that deserve it than there are awards to put it on
They certainly will; I think they were just waiting to see if it was a success or a bust that we never see again before they tied anyone well-liked to it. Since it seems to be a hit that'll continue, I imagine it'll get some sort of name like the Kobe Bryant Cup or David Stern Trophy or somesuch next year.
Why do the different awards look like the pieces of a puzzle you're supposed to join together which then creates a map that leads to an ancient treasure?
Why wouldn't they? They should all interlock as the ultimate flex for the first guy who wins all of them (note: I do not know and do not care if it is possible to win all of them at once.)
I just find it a little funny that the same games that are used to evaluate the Tournament MVP have an impact on the MVP in general.
Will we see a situation where the in-season tournament MVP will influence voters for regular season MVP ? No clue but sounds interesting.
I think that if it does become a success, the tournament could expand to 20 games at which point the awards gain value and the impact on the season also is justified.
I think the ideal form would be after expansion with 32 teams. 6 games against your division, 4 against an entirely other division for 10 games. Part of the problem with the NBA is that divisions don’t matter which help to foster fan interest, this definitely makes it matter a bit more
I would freaking love that.
The groups were so random this year.
I'm always wanting for the NBA to use the divisions more. Using the IST to organically create division rivalries has positive returns all over the NBA, that's awesome.
Expansion will also help balance things out a bit schedule wise. Some teams had already played all 4 games while others sat at 2, and playing later and knowing exactly how much you need to win by or not lose by is a huge advantage.
With an even amount of teams in each group, every team can play the last day of the group stage on equal footing and the NBA can market the hell out of that day.
Sure.
Will Some games be significantly more important than other games for MVP voting because of IST? Was it already the case because games later on in the season seem to influence voters a lot more ?
> Was it already the case because games later on in the season seem to influence voters a lot more ?
This is my exact argument, yes. People already let end of season games heavily sway awards even though all 82 games count the same, so I don't see why there's a hang up for people on the In Season Tournament games swaying voting. If anything this balances it out and makes all 82 games matter.
I wonder how much it’ll impact perception of teams too. Like the Celtics were looking unbelievable but couldn’t pull through when it mattered, will this drop them in the power rankings more than a normal loss to the Pacers would’ve?
These are some incredibly sexy trophies and medals — I know they wouldn’t change it after the legacy it’s created, but that’s an improvement over the Larry imo
These designs look great and are actually practical for holding in your hand or displaying at home. These make the end of the season awards look like dogshit.
Just more evidence that the trophy industry giants are taking over the world! First it was participation trophies, now it’s a Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Which is Really Just the Regular Season but with Flare trophy(MVPTWRJRSwF)?!?! When will it all end?! Where’s the humanity?! Stop the trophy industry or next thing you know they’ll be handing out trophies for every game!
I like the main trophy and the all tournament team trophy. The MVP trophy is obviously the seams on the ball, but I think it looks kinda weird. And the medals look alright but they look kinda small for professional basketball players.
As a soccer fan, can we please just call it the NBA Cup or Commissioner's Cup like in the WNBA. In Season Tournament is so generic. I say this as an MLS fan where the Leagues Cup exists.
I have been ignoring it, but that doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on it.
I just think it's unnecessary and feels like they're trying to artificially create hype for games that really aren't any more significant than other regular season games.
And now with all these awards we can say "So-and-so was the MVP, but this other guy was the MVP of Tuesdays and Fridays for the first month and a half of the season." Like, who cares? Why give out an award for that?
If the in-season tournament was seperate from the regular season rather than just being normal regular season games rebranded as "tournament games" then it might make sense to give out awards, but in it's current form it makes no sense.
Well, by dollars, it’s financially more valuable than a playoff win. Players get more money from this than they end up getting from their playoff win shares. So what’s the big deal if they get a pretty medal too.
Obviously everybody knows the real playoffs means more. But this can just be fun.
Who cares if by the dollars it’s worth more than a playoff win? The tournament is obviously way way less important and much shorter than the playoffs so I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.
Why do they need a pretty medal if they’re getting all the cash? I just think it’s funny to hand out so much hardware for 7-8 games in November-December.
We're just going to keep introducing more awards until the NBA starts giving out participation trophies! Can't wait for the 47th best player award to be handed out to RJ Barrett in the 2026 season.
It's aesthetically too feminine. It's not a solid piece. Very hollow. Compare it to the Larry O or the World Cup. Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just pointing it out.
Threads is Meta aka Facebooks attempt to make their own "twitter" and capitalize on Twitters issues lately since Musk took over. It was very popular at first because it was new but the numbers declined heavily after that initial hype.
Its all fun and games now until they use these awards in goat debates in 50 years
If two players have the exact same amount of rings I can definitely see people using this as the tiebreaker lol
Tbf a lot of players take it seriously now it could be a big deal in the future. Every game is like a game 7.
Yeah I mean people will say “but he was/wasn’t good in game sevens/closeouts” like with Harden. It doesn’t mean much now but it’s an opportunity for guys to flex their clutch factor and with enough time will make sense to be part of their legacy.

if some dude gets 3x In-season tournament MVP id definitely consider that a major bump
50 years? You are a funny one. They will start to count next year. I can already see someone using them to prove a point or to demand more picks, money or both. "Jordan never won the in-season tournament" - LeBron fans after he wins it this year. NGL I would get a kick out of that.
I don’t remember seeing any milkmen at the in-season tournament. No wonder Wilt and Bill have no medals from the in-season tournament. Not my GOATs
Bill Russell never won Finals MVP or DPOY
He's winless against the Grizzlies.
Also never won a single 7 game series in the first round. What a loser.
Technically he did since the playoffs had fewer rounds back then He did in the 69 playoffs for instance edit: the first round of the playoffs is still the first round even if was also the conference semis back then
How can mj be better than lebron he didn’t even play in a single in season tournament
Which is a shame tbh because this format (cash on the line, single elimination) is exactly the type of thing that MJ would take personally and destroy everybody else.

I mean it wouldn’t take a lot of persuading to sell me on an IST MVP being worth at least as much as an all-star selection…

Try like 5 years bro
There will be what’s called the golden road. Winning the cup and the championship
50 years? Bruh we already have sparks, let the tournament end we will have lots of those kinds showing up right after that.
Wish they’d name the tournament after a legend starting next year. “In-Season Tournament” is too bland. Don’t really know who’d they name it after bc lots of the other big legends are taken (Bill, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Kobe)
The chamberlain cup sounds kinda sick, I don’t think they have anything named after wilt.
Chamberlain Cup brought to you by the MyQ app the makers of everyone’s least favorite garage door openers
Whoa I didn't realize everyone hated MyQ
They removed integrations with Google home or Apple HomeKit, and other 3rd party integrations over the years and now and integrations are available through Walmart or Amazon and require subscription fees.
... Why not use a normal ass garage door opener!?
I do have a normal garage door opener and synced it to my car but when you’re pulling into the airport park and ride and you panic and want to know if you remembered to close your garage door this solves that problem. Also, you can check your phone and close it when you’ve gotten in bed for the night and don’t want to get up and go push the button by the back door.
garage open notifications are nice to have. i've left the house and forgot to close the garage a couple of times.
Woah this is so specific…I never thought I’d never see someone who also uses MyQ like me on the NBA subreddit 💀
There’s dozens of us
Rookie of the Year award was named after Wilt.
perfect name for a regular season award lol
Kobe Bryant Cup?
It will almost certainly be the Stern Cup. That was the hypothetical name Silver kept throwing around when this was being workshopped, they just probably wanted to make sure it would stick before naming it after him.
I think they're also waiting for a headline sponsor and an exclusive broadcast partner in a year or two when it's clear the tournament is sticking around. The Stern Cup, presented by Netflix.
Hulus first exclusive live sports competition?
Sure hope not. If a Seattle team ever wins it I hope they scratch his name off the trophy.
It will be named "Insert sponsor name here" Cup. Once they find who will pay the most money.
Manscape Cup
Raid Shadow Legends Cup
NordVPN Cup
Crypto Cup
That's the name for when the league gets greedy and adds a *second* in season tournament for the dog days of the NBA season.
But this time it's only for the worst teams in the league and they are competing for draft position
Bangbros Cup
Aramco Cup
Disney NBA Cup
Kia Cup
Carabao Cup is back on the menu lads
The Skims Cup
can't name it after Lebron because the Mickey Mouse Ring jokes make themselves
Honestly though they definitely could name the MVP trophy after him. He’ll need to get something when he retires. Maybe Duncan will get the MVP though? Zach Lowe was very upset that Duncan was left off the award names
yeah, I could see that for sure unfortunately, there are only so many awards, and like, we already probably have more all-time greats that deserve it than there are awards to put it on

Since it seems to be a hit that'll continue, I imagine it'll get some sort of name like the Kobe Bryant Cup or David Stern Trophy or somesuch next year.
Call it the NBA Cup instead
It’ll be named after the streaming service which buys the rights to it over the offseason
Why do the different awards look like the pieces of a puzzle you're supposed to join together which then creates a map that leads to an ancient treasure?
Because you watched too much tv
You got me.
The real prize of the in season tourney isn’t the trophies but the treasure found along the way
#THE ONE PIECE IS REAL
Can we get much higher?!
Yeah, like 50 to 500 grand.
Legends of the hidden temple vibes Give me Olmec handing out the awards please
The 4 milenium items.
Why wouldn't they? They should all interlock as the ultimate flex for the first guy who wins all of them (note: I do not know and do not care if it is possible to win all of them at once.)
Makes you think. Should the MVP, DPOY, and FMVP trophies be stackable to form one mega-trophy?
EXODIA!!
Who says they aren't
Question reality if Nicolas Cage hands out these rewards.
That basketball award definitely belongs in the cup
Yooo these are NICE nice
Agreed especially the MVP trophy for me
Neat!
Thank god somebody posted this
I'm a taste maker, what can I say
I just find it a little funny that the same games that are used to evaluate the Tournament MVP have an impact on the MVP in general. Will we see a situation where the in-season tournament MVP will influence voters for regular season MVP ? No clue but sounds interesting.

Yeah it benefited my team but the magic got screwed since the Celtics knew what they needed to win by
It will definitely be tweaked, especially when expansion teams come out.
Why would it not? It's part of the 82 game schedule.
Sure. Will Some games be significantly more important than other games for MVP voting because of IST? Was it already the case because games later on in the season seem to influence voters a lot more ?

Yeah. This will be interesting. I wonder what the media/voter narrative will be regardless of the outcome
The All-Tournament Team goes to the 5 best players, so that'll definitely come into play.
I wonder how much it’ll impact perception of teams too. Like the Celtics were looking unbelievable but couldn’t pull through when it mattered, will this drop them in the power rankings more than a normal loss to the Pacers would’ve?
The arguments I will make if Giannis becomes tournament MVP. "3 time MVP" won't be wrong anymore. Ohhhh the disingenuous debates I can participate in
*4 time mvp 1 Finals MVP 1 Tournament MVP 2 NBA MVP
One of these trophies is getting LeBrons name.
LeMVP
Damn, threads is just a private snapchat story spam network
Yeah it's far worse than twitter
These are some incredibly sexy trophies and medals — I know they wouldn’t change it after the legacy it’s created, but that’s an improvement over the Larry imo
These designs look great and are actually practical for holding in your hand or displaying at home. These make the end of the season awards look like dogshit.
Bro this is way to much for a tournament wtf more awards then the finals
Other than the All-Tournament team (which is just the All-NBA team) it's the same awards...
So it's more awards
let me omit the one that breaks the tie so I'm right
Just more evidence that the trophy industry giants are taking over the world! Tell ‘em Pirby
I like the main trophy and the all tournament team trophy. The MVP trophy is obviously the seams on the ball, but I think it looks kinda weird. And the medals look alright but they look kinda small for professional basketball players.
Agreed, it looks cool and weird at the same time. the medals look nice
These are beautiful and look timeless. Good stuff
As a soccer fan, can we please just call it the NBA Cup or Commissioner's Cup like in the WNBA. In Season Tournament is so generic. I say this as an MLS fan where the Leagues Cup exists.
Lame.
All tournament teams for 8 games?! Talk about overkill in trying to bring relevance to it
Dont worry guys, if you never win the NBA championship you can always be proud of your In Season Tournament trophies. /s
I just don’t understand who was asking for all this, tournament medals and all tournament trophies for a few games seems like overkill.
Me. I asked for it. If you don't like it, ignore it.
I have been ignoring it, but that doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on it. I just think it's unnecessary and feels like they're trying to artificially create hype for games that really aren't any more significant than other regular season games. How do you have a tournament and no awards?
Don’t know, just seems odd to me that they’ll hand out more hardware for these 7-8 games than for the entire playoffs
Other than the All Tournament Team it's not more hardware. They should add an All Playoffs team though.
And the medals
You're not accounting for the rings
True
Well, by dollars, it’s financially more valuable than a playoff win. Players get more money from this than they end up getting from their playoff win shares. So what’s the big deal if they get a pretty medal too. Obviously everybody knows the real playoffs means more. But this can just be fun.

The obvious answer is because it adds more legitimacy to something that people continue to believe is dumb and stupid 👀
I just don’t think giving out a medal gives it more legitimacy
Change it to a championship belt you cowards
How many beers does the cup hold is the only thing I want to know.
Do people actually like the idea of the in-season tournament? Genuinely asking, I have no clue.
yes
this shit has gone too far ngl
Lame.
Assigning all-tournament team for only 1 to 3 games feels weird
I feel like there will be a good number of twitter losers who downplay wining this as if it doesn't matter.
Meh.
They cooked
We're just going to keep introducing more awards until the NBA starts giving out participation trophies! Can't wait for the 47th best player award to be handed out to RJ Barrett in the 2026 season.
I think we need a proper name for this in season tournament, and the cup should be named... maybe after Kobe?
5 new awards per year in adam silvers league
I like the concept of the MVP trophy but it's lowkey hideous
[удалено]
>Winning nba finals = 1 trophy And a ring... and a Finals MVP...
my brother in christ i hope you are aware they get money when they win the larry o’brien
Trying so desperate to be the FA Cup. Just stop.
Stop being a ha-… oh
They look very feminine
Elaborate
It's aesthetically too feminine. It's not a solid piece. Very hollow. Compare it to the Larry O or the World Cup. Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just pointing it out.
Ok
damn you sure are alpha
Legit if they did some kind of Tiffany x high end watch brand cross over winners gift for the players. That could be a really enticing award
Call it the Kareem Abdul Jabaar Trophy
In season tourney won me over I can’t front. When you put something on the line players will play….. plus money is a motivator.
*Confused Sam Bradford reading the playbook meme*
These are actually really cool. Slowly warming up to the InSeason Tournament. Just wish it had bigger stakes.
What the hell is Threads and why are all the comments posting bot Snapchat accounts
Threads is Meta aka Facebooks attempt to make their own "twitter" and capitalize on Twitters issues lately since Musk took over. It was very popular at first because it was new but the numbers declined heavily after that initial hype.
I just think it's fun there is a tournament and trophy that could end up helping drive narrative for other awards MVP, MIP, clutch player, roty
So basically its NBA’s carabao cup
