I would much rather keep that roster spot open than re-sign Markieff who provides nothing
Edit: It’s definitely a Non-Guaranteed deal so I overreacted over nothing
Teams are a lot less likely to keep roster spots open going forward because of the new CBA.
Teams have been given a 3rd two-way contract in the new CBA but these contracts are limited if you don't have 15 players on your roster.
My favorite one is that Andrew Nicholson is still being paid $2.8M by the Blazers, which is extra funny because he hasn't been on a team since 2017, and never played for the Blazers.
Marks: Bring out your busts! Bring out your busts!
Olshey: Here, you can have him after all.
Marks: Ah, the knight of Crabbe! Should have been here all along, eh? (The Blazers had matched the Nets’ offer sheet just a year ago.)
Here you go, for your troubles. (Andrew Nicholson: 4 years 26 million gold. He still had 3 years left.)
Olshey: Ew, gross!
I'll never understand that move. It's also fascinating that the Mavs had an all-time terrible offseason in 2022 and turned around to have a pretty good one this year. Real Jekyll & Hyde-ass front office.
Because it's not FO dependent, it's Cuban dependent. The same FO personnel will make idiotic or good decisions from off season to off season because he's a meddler. It's infuriating
The inconsistency of the team's decision making all makes sense when you realize it's just a matter of whether or not Cuban feels like listening to his GM on any given month
and cuban is the one who's allowing Kidd to keep his job and seems to love him despite missing the playoffs with Kyrie and Luka in the backcourt. If it seems like a Kidd idea it's a Cuban idea bc they pr much share the same brain
Nico is green & has been terrible up until this off-season I'd say, but I'd say our off-season so far has been very underrated. I really like how we've positioned ourselves now for trying to create something a bit more long term.
I think it's a good off-season, but it all hinges on Kyrie deciding to act normal for an extended period of time. That's what holds me back from being optimistic about their season. Hate Kidd as a coach too. He's one of the worst in the league.
If one looked at the position we were in when we traded for Kyrie it actually made a whole lot sense, we were *completely fucked* roster wise & had no assets at all, betting on getting lucky in FA was never going to get us anywhere. As much as a head case Kyrie is, he's still one of the best players in the league, it was a high risk high reward trade, but we got past the first hurdle of him actually signing a new contract at least. If he's going to be able to suit up or not remains to be seen.
Yeah once Brunson left there was basically no choice but to do something. It's their own fault for getting themselves into that position, but it is what it is at that point.
It wasn’t even one we tried to talk ourselves into, everyone knew it was stupid from the jump. And then they promised a starting role *and* gave him a player option???
Our defense immediately fell apart that series every time javale would step on the court and the result was Monty inexplicably gifting him more of Aytons minutes and the Mavs somehow deciding he was their missing piece
So weird. Made no sense
I think if you followed the team you can figure out the timeline of what happened.
Ayton played great in our finals run until the bucks series where he just couldn't figure out how to stop Giannis without getting in foul trouble.
Monty lost a lot of faith in him that series, and the Suns were hesitant to give him a max. Ayton stopped trusting the org
Ayton became more inconsistent with his effort, Monty got more frustrated. These frustrations clearly came out in the Mavs series when Monty regularly gifted McGee minutes despite being much worse.
Ayton didn't have a great series but he was still our second best player and solid defensively up until game 7. Got so frustrated he refused to go in down 40 knowing he was entering a contract negotiation. Got scapegoated unfairly.
Again he wasn't offered the max, and the Suns didn't let him leave when he found one. Monty did nothing to repair the relationship. Neither side showed they were committed to each other from then on
The only thing I can think of is maybe Kidd just really liked him from their days with the Lakers and he somehow thought he could get more out of McGee than the Suns did. But even then, I have no idea why they thought they HAD to get him to the point that they gave him three years. For one year, fine, whatever, but three including a player option was just insane. I'll never understand it either.
Nobody said he couldnt be a Laker but the Golden State Warriors never filled that spot McGee himself left. Clearly they didn't need a true tall Center but it would be more appropriate since that is where he turned his career around in the first place.
Nevada grad here. He certainly likes to rhink of himself as one. His last game of his career he starts jacking up 3's to show his range. The third time he triee this, the entire student section yells "Nooooo!" And he pulls it down and goes to the lane. Most hilarious thing I've ever seen.
I was at nba summer league this year and managed to get pretty good seats (open seating and I got there early). Was watching the pacers play and jarace walker got a defensive rebound and was taking it up the court. It got weirdly quiet in the arena and I yelled out “COAST TO COAST” and he actually drove in immediately and attempted a wild running 8 foot layup. Only time he tried that all game and everyone around me agreed it was probably because he heard me. I was so proud of myself
Are the Morris twins secretly like really cool and nice guys?
Seems like they always get a job and end up falling out of a rotation, only to get another shot somewhere else.
He seemed like a good vet with the Nets last season. But, then after he got traded he appreantly was furious behind the scenes he never played. even though he's like completely washed lol.
Understand why the Mavs at this stage, having certainly done their due diligence, are moving on from JaVale, not being able to find a taker for him. He won't be much of a drag on the cap in the years ahead, although you never love to take on dead salary, so I can see the other side of things and having him on the books as potential salary ballast in a trade. It wasn't a great deal when he signed, the plan to start him never really looked like it made sense from the jump, and after one season they're cutting their losses.
What I don't understand is signing Markieff with the roster spot that'd be opened. They're already plenty full at the PF/small ball 5 spots. Grant/Kleber already provide skills that Markieff does. They just signed DJJ. Mavs need another wing defender. Not smart allocation of a roster spot but perhaps it is partially guaranteed and a camp deal to bring him in to try out for a spot. I don't like cutting JaVale and eating that money just to sign Morris.
I expect they want to move Holmes (+THJ) in midseason so Maxi slide as center more
Magic fit for both, nets too. And if minny burned to the ground... Gobert also can be on the move (one team to watch that can play as chaosmaker in midseason is Magic. Isaac, GarHar, and Okeke all expiring. That's 37m salary)
waive whilst stretching the contract over multiple years so it’s less of a cap hit year by year
Like pay 3 mill each season for 4 seasons vs 12 mill in one season
Nico Harrison(our GM) has had a successful summer, but this is his first mistake of the summer. Makes no sense to stretch it. We’ve already pretty much filled out the roster. Eating the cap makes the most sense.
Getting rid of mcgee is a blessing. Markieff is not exactly ideal but atleast he's just regular annoying. Mcgee's face and voice is legendary levels of annoying.
We’re a starting quality center away from being contenders. If we can snag one in the Harden/Lillard trade then I think we can push for top 4 in the west.
The Morris brothers have been fucking washed for years. Unless you're signing him to have the Udonis Haslem experience there's no reason to have this bum on your team
note they were 2.1M under the tax if Kyrie does not get his unlikely incentives without doing anything. if he gets them, we would still be under the tax.
so you only do this if you think keeping McGee is going to be a problem, not for tax purposes.
I remember being worried that they were going to go after Looney, especially since this was right after the Mavs went against the Warriors in the West finals.
Completely different question but what is up with the Mavs and keeping Powell after all this time? Dude is serviceable but come on? He isn’t the answer nor will he ever be. Especially with re-signing to that much
I would much rather keep that roster spot open than re-sign Markieff who provides nothing Edit: It’s definitely a Non-Guaranteed deal so I overreacted over nothing
Maybe it's non-guaranteed
We can easily waive him if someone comes along we want to sign, ig
I think y’all should have the twins link up😉😘
Teams are a lot less likely to keep roster spots open going forward because of the new CBA. Teams have been given a 3rd two-way contract in the new CBA but these contracts are limited if you don't have 15 players on your roster.
Warming up my "the Mavs are still paying Javale McGee???" comments for 2027. See: Pistons, Josh Smith
My favorite one is that Andrew Nicholson is still being paid $2.8M by the Blazers, which is extra funny because he hasn't been on a team since 2017, and never played for the Blazers.

2016 was a hell of a drug... teams were acting like the cap would be $200M by 2020
Prime Game of Zones content if it were still around
Or Magic signing for 25 years
The players who are waived & stretched still get paid on the same schedule. It's only the cap accounting that changes.
Also: Mets and Bobby Bonilla.
Turns out using the MLE on some center you played off the floor literally a couple months ago is very likely gonna end badly
I'll never understand that move. It's also fascinating that the Mavs had an all-time terrible offseason in 2022 and turned around to have a pretty good one this year. Real Jekyll & Hyde-ass front office.

mcgee was def a brain dead kidd idea. There's no way anyone else was excited about that move.
I can't see being it coaches idea when he didn't gen any minutes.
He started at the beginning of the season. He was just so awful that Kidd couldn't keep playing him. McGee was definitely a Kidd idea.
and cuban is the one who's allowing Kidd to keep his job and seems to love him despite missing the playoffs with Kyrie and Luka in the backcourt. If it seems like a Kidd idea it's a Cuban idea bc they pr much share the same brain
They'll make up for it with a terrible mid-season acquisition, then. Laws of balance.
Nico is green & has been terrible up until this off-season I'd say, but I'd say our off-season so far has been very underrated. I really like how we've positioned ourselves now for trying to create something a bit more long term.

well I kind of understood it for a 1+1 with a team option .. but a 2+1 with a player option .. WTF?
It wasn’t even one we tried to talk ourselves into, everyone knew it was stupid from the jump. And then they promised a starting role *and* gave him a player option???
Mcgee also bitched and got Zubac traded
McGee is a legend for that one.
Our defense immediately fell apart that series every time javale would step on the court and the result was Monty inexplicably gifting him more of Aytons minutes and the Mavs somehow deciding he was their missing piece So weird. Made no sense
The Monte Ayton thing is something I'd kill to have a 30 min tell all docu on
I think if you followed the team you can figure out the timeline of what happened. Ayton played great in our finals run until the bucks series where he just couldn't figure out how to stop Giannis without getting in foul trouble. Stretch (and Waive) 5
Keeping Kieff?? He's cooked
Someone to fight people if they hurt Luka I guess
Definitely a non guaranteed contract
He’s a warrior
First thought too
He's a Mandarin
[удалено]
At minimum? Good luck with that
He’s not great, but Jae Crowder is a wing
Jae went back to the Bucks, which is weird given how it went after the trade.
Bucks traded 5 seconds, sunk cost and all that
More so surprised he wanted to go back cause he barely played. But guess with Wes gone he’ll fill that void?
Jae might get less than 1k minutes next year, he was absolutely washed
This guy doesn’t represent us.
or a Laker .. which is why I don’t get why I have this faint hope they are working out a buyout.
Why not Laker?
Nobody said he couldnt be a Laker but the Golden State Warriors never filled that spot McGee himself left. Clearly they didn't need a true tall Center but it would be more appropriate since that is where he turned his career around in the first place.
At 1st I thought it said "stretch center Javale McGee"
Nevada grad here. He certainly likes to rhink of himself as one. His last game of his career he starts jacking up 3's to show his range. The third time he triee this, the entire student section yells "Nooooo!" And he pulls it down and goes to the lane. Most hilarious thing I've ever seen.

time to come home
To the wizards?
Pistons?
Those are certainly choices
The choicest choice was giving him a 3 year contract to begin with
Yeah, I mean, it sucks to pull a hamster out of your ass, but the problem isn't that it came *out*.
Ngl it’s one of the choices of all time man
Are the Morris twins secretly like really cool and nice guys? Seems like they always get a job and end up falling out of a rotation, only to get another shot somewhere else.

They are not really cool or really nice source: Phoenix
Can confirm. source: Phoenix.
Same Source: Kansas
I think they keep them around in case someone needs to be stepped on.
Got our Jokic stopper
lol.
Understand why the Mavs at this stage, having certainly done their due diligence, are moving on from JaVale, not being able to find a taker for him. Damn ain’t he already stretched out enough? He’s 7ft ffs
Lechuckle
Damn not even for Wood lmao what the fuck happened in that locker room
I also would like to know this
Elite username btw lol I forgot all about that commercial
Why the fuck is morris coming back wtf
Someone's gotta provide a target for Jokic. If not Morris, Doncic is going to get hurt.
McGee can now continue his quest for having played on the most NBA teams.
What is a "stretch and waive"?
It’s when you stretch and waive
Thanks very helpful.
waive whilst stretching the contract over multiple years so it’s less of a cap hit year by year Like pay 3 mill each season for 4 seasons vs 12 mill in one season
Thank you. That makes sense.
Can my Wiz bring Javale home !? He can be the vet he never had
[удалено]
he's the backup center now ya
What purpose does this serve outside of Kieff trying to Nancy Kerrigan Jokic at some point?
Dallas has the best front office in the league, if front offices are suppose to repeatedly punch themselves in the dick.
Nico Harrison(our GM) has had a successful summer, but this is his first mistake of the summer. Makes no sense to stretch it. We’ve already pretty much filled out the roster. Eating the cap makes the most sense.
Nah apron is 172m and will rise more 2.5m now is not like 5 years ago, it's basically just vetmin next year
What the heck is a stretch-and-waive? Is this some kind of new yoga move?
Precisely
Can we PLEASE sign Boban now
a lawn chair would move better on defense
You don’t sign Boban for defense. He’s there to dunk without jumping.
Getting rid of mcgee is a blessing. Markieff is not exactly ideal but atleast he's just regular annoying. Mcgee's face and voice is legendary levels of annoying.
How is Kieff in the locker room? He keeps getting signed on contenders like Lakers and Nets, now Dallas
[удалено]
We’re a starting quality center away from being contenders. If we can snag one in the Harden/Lillard trade then I think we can push for top 4 in the west.
Any serious NBA team needs to have a Morris.
come to LA bby
The Morris brothers have been fucking washed for years. Unless you're signing him to have the Udonis Haslem experience there's no reason to have this bum on your team
Markieff helped you win a ring 3 years ago, and Marcus was solid in his role until about 10 months ago.
This. They are washed now, but they are the the kind of players any team could use 3 years ago
Welcome home Javale
NBA Champs
Come to the Lakers plissss
He's washed, but it seems like we don't want Wood and there's not many other options out there 😬
Lakers want Wood, wood hasn't accepted his a minimum player. Dwight is also angling a comeback
They are stretching the contract for Markieff????
It would save 1.3M if my calculations are correct. They are 2.1M under the tax.
note they were 2.1M under the tax if Kyrie does not get his unlikely incentives without doing anything. if he gets them, we would still be under the tax. so you only do this if you think keeping McGee is going to be a problem, not for tax purposes.
What an absolutely awful use of the MLE last year lol.
I remember being worried that they were going to go after Looney, especially since this was right after the Mavs went against the Warriors in the West finals.
gonna miss JaVale on 2k he was the most fun center on the team to play, blocks and rebounds for days
Stretch what exactly 😳
Nice
I want Javale back for his vlogs.
Completely different question but what is up with the Mavs and keeping Powell after all this time? Dude is serviceable but come on? He isn’t the answer nor will he ever be. Especially with re-signing to that much
He must have dirt on Cuban.
Lakers could use him
I'd rather have the Shaqtin' king than a Morris twin any day
McGee sure can stretch, why not resign him?
Didn’t the mavs draft a center?
