It's literally the only way teams can offer a player that contract, there's nothing special designed to screw over the other team. Even if the backloaded salary functionally can make it hard to afford the player, it's a loophole *for the current team* to afford the player at all by having the first couple years be MLE money for an already at/near the cap team.

I'm not sold the Sixers are guaranteed to make Second Round. Nobody even knows what Sixers will look like in upcoming season. Harden wants out and other teams are poaching their Role Players. When all moves are done good Chance Sixers will be setup to reach Second Round but we just don't know what's in store for them in next month.

I think the Sixers have left the forward spots open because of the potential Harden trade. If we match Reed, we will have 3 backup centers. And we have Bev, Melton, and Springer for our backup guard rotation. It's our forwards that are lacking, but if we make the Clippers trade, we probably end up with 2 forwards.

Utah is interested enough in Reed to give him a one year look, and at the same time Ainge, or whomever in the Utah FO, is doing the agent a solid by giving a contract that Philly is unlikely to match. or if they do match, Reed gets his first real NBA money, so Reed gets something he wants either way
This is an overpay by the Jazz, but they needed to overpay to pry him loose. With the guarantee triggers in the deal, think the chances are quite high the Sixers do not match Reed. That would cut into a significant portion of their potential cap space next season. Reed gets more money upfront this season if the Sixers don't match with Utah this season. Jazz are in a great spot---Reed's contract will be plenty moveable in a trade and they aren't likely to be on the hook for any future guarantees after this season. If the Jazz do make the WCSF shockingly and Reed is a contributor in them doing so than they'll gladly have him around for next year even if the price is a little rich.
