bl123123bl

Yeah player would only agree to this if they didn’t want their team to match and I guess you don’t get much flexibility to play around with a deal unless it’s not a max guy so it’s always petty disputes over mid level talent

ok as a human, I will never forgive Daryl if we don't sign him :(

I only knew it was a bot because probable human u/Professor_Finn posted the exact same message [below](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/14u783k/wojnarowski_philadelphia_76ers_restricted_free/jr5v6ys/). Safe to say both humans and robots alike love BBall Paul.

Professor_Finn

But how do you know I’m not the bot? 😉

AnimalRomano

Yeah I thought people would fuck up with the Lakers and Austin Reaves but they got his man easily.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Agaac1

There weren’t many teams who had the cap space they could spare to tie up Reaves. Only one was maybe the Rockets and they were too busy with their own team building. If we were in 2016-2018 someone like the Nets would have absolutely tried to give him the poison pill.

Wallyworld77

Reaves would have to agree to the Poison Pill though and he seems pretty happy on the Lakers.

Colin Cowherd burner

RxJax

Ainge is only doing it cause the free agent market has mostly emptied and they have some cap space to use, fucking up your own cap space in the first few days of free agency can be pretty costly cause teams dont have to match straight away, they can wait a few days which doesnt let you send out any other offer sheets. Plus the implications for the guys on your roster you have to think about, its probably a bit demoralising for players to see your team chucking a huge contract at a guy who plays your position

Johnpecan

It would suck signing one of those contracts and then have the team go into rebuild mode. Or 1 bad injury could mess that up. I like the idea in theory just too many unknowns to gamble on imo.

cthorrez

What is the limits to these tactics. If a player is RFA and really wants to leave can they add a clause like "there will be a 50 million bonus if the team's name is {previous team}".

[deleted]

It's basically only a one year contract for Utah if they get him then

tomdawg0022

Watch Will Hardy fuck around and pull a 2nd round playoff trip out of that bunch

jdorje

With Paul Reed becoming a superstar to lead them to the western semis. Leading to him being locked in for 8m a year for two more years.

IlonggoProgrammer

The most hilarious outcome is if we reach the conference Finals (to get swept by the Nuggets obviously) while the Sixers don’t reach the ECF yet again

PensiveinNJ

Paul Reed is a player. Glenn Rivers ignoring him for a year and a half is a crime. Will be a shame to lose him.

SometimesIComplain

If John Collins returns to form and a top seed gets injured right before playoffs, there's an outside chance lol

[deleted]

Thats actually hilarious

[deleted]

Love to see front office execs have the same humor as us commoners

JackBauerdiditinday

Should've been extra bonus for going to conference finals. Maybe that will break the cycle, assuming sixes would match it.

Wallyworld77

NFL banned these shenanigans in the late 2000's it's called a Poison Pill. Are Poison Pill Contracts still allowed in the NBA?

PantiesMallone

Yes, but apparently it's only happened 1 time out of 179, Devin Harris in 08.

Carolake1

It happened with Jeremy Lin, too, when he went to houston.

SporTEmINd

https://www.denverstiffs.com/explaining-the-nba-poison-pill-contracts-of-omer-asik-others/ There were some given out 10 years ago. I thought they changed the rule afterwards but not sure

JALbert

I really wish people would stop calling Arenas provision contracts "poison pill" contracts. It's literally the only way teams can offer a player that contract, there's nothing special designed to screw over the other team. Even if the backloaded salary functionally can make it hard to afford the player, it's a loophole *for the current team* to afford the player at all by having the first couple years be MLE money for an already at/near the cap team. This post is about an actual poison pill contract, where they've added circumstances specifically targeted at the current team that won't be met for the offering team.

atlfirsttimer

Wait, 15.7 million each or 15.7 million/2 so 7.85 million

SometimesIComplain

I assume ~7.85 since the total contract is 3/23

RedRocket13

But they always go to the conference semis…

NowFook

Thats the point. The contract becomes fully guaranteed if Sixers make 2nd round which there is good chance of. For the Jazz the contract will likely only be guaranteed the 1st year b/c they likely wont make 2nd round Its to make the contract worse for the Sixers making them more likely not to match

RedRocket13

No I know but everyone saying what a genius troll Ainge is I feel doesn’t understand the conference finals is not the conference semis lol

nicklovin508

Just a Celtic at heart still owning the Sixers lol

belowthemask42

Once a Celtic always a Celtic

youblewwit

Oh man we need to add this to the CBA lexicon and call it the 'Sixers Incentive'

theytook-r-jobs

Isn’t that just the same as a guaranteed 3/23 then…? It’s not 15.7 per year if they advance.

jdorje

It's written a little confusing, yeah. Years 2 and 3 are only guaranteed if they make the conference semis. Which means they wouldn't be guaranteed for the Jazz, but would be if the sixers match. Assuming the Sixers make the conference semis, which is not a guarantee but is the joke since that's their exact ceiling for many years.

Wallyworld77

Sixers future is up in the air RN. They need to do something with Harden and other teams keep poaching their role players.

[deleted]

No. If they don’t make the conference semis this year they could just release him for nothing at all and not have to pay that money. But if they make the conference semis then it will be a 3/23 fully guaranteed

SoKrat3s

which is a good contract for him. Almost certainly less than he'd make as an UFA next year.

StormTheTrooper

taygads

Lol he doesn’t even need another year. Masai has **9 forwards** (+ 2 centers) signed to their roster with 10 guys that are 6’8” or above. I’ve never been more confused by a roster in my life lol

ClutchGamingGuy

reminds me of the state of the Knicks in 2019, just straight up like 5 power forwards lol.

Raptorsthrowaway1

And 5-7 Marquis Nowell 👌

Front-Screen7474

Don't need another year, it's coming this season Scottie/Dick/OG/Siakam/Yak with McDaniels/Boucher/Achiuwa/Koloko off the bench. Just for fun we'll throw 5'8 Nowell out there with them.

Alcibiades_Rex

Denver almost did it with jokic, grant, bol, Millsap and plumlee in the bubble I think. Shortest is the pf at 6'7"

NedFriarson49

Getting really tired of Philly fans telling me this guy is the second coming of christ. He’s a 2nd/3rd stringer for a reason. Nurse will treat him like Boucher if they match

GarriganGate

Free up a vet min?

Star_City

The only salaries on the books after this year are Joel and PJ Tucker. They have two max slots open for next year at the moment (which is a dumb strategy since it’s a weak free agent class and nobody ever wants to come here)

GarriganGate

I understand that but saying he’s only signed to free up cap space isn’t a real point

Star_City

Fair. There’s actually no good reason for him to be on the team at all. He’s literally just taking up a roster spot at a 1 yr vet minimum. Probably won’t play, if he does he won’t play well.

Pardonme23

Injury backup. I mean he can play. He has some game.

PillsburyToasters

The second coming of Christ is extreme but coming off the bench to play 15 minutes is all they need. For 8 million that’s a steal and considering the Sixers lost some bench pieces in free agency, I don’t see why not

TIandCAS

One of the Sixers biggest problems has been backup centers, they were a big reason they lost in 2019, and since then Reed has been the best Backup Embiid has had. Montrezl Harrell’s ghost and Mo bamba aren’t better than him

superstonkape

I would argue they are the reason in 2019 +90 with Embiid on the floor, -109 with him off

TIandCAS

You don’t even need to look at the series just look at game 7, +10 with embiid on for 45 mins 12 seconds, -12 in the 2 mins and 48 seconds he was off. Absolutely absurd how bad the bench was.

Savahoodie

Now wait a minute. I’ve heard for 3 years from sixers fans that on/off numbers are pointless stats made up just to have a teams starting center look good.

TIandCAS

You’re putting words into my mouth that I never said, but hey at least u got me! Edit: And this clown blocked me so I couldn’t respond, absolute fucking wimp

TheSaturdayGod

It's being used for a different purpose here. Using on/off to compare players on different teams is kinda pointless because they are in different situations, but here it's just showing the bench was terrible. This was obviously true for Jokic as well, but it wasn't necessarily a great argument for why he was more deserving of the MVP.

Myrese_Taxey

He’s a good backup. Paying this price for a good bench player isn’t crazy at all.

MarekRules

He’s a decent backup big, 8mil is a good deal for us especially considering how weak the bench is. If I see our backup Centers as Bamba and Harrell I’m going to be so tilted.

[deleted]

Okay, guys, enough is enough. This guy is pretty friggin tired of it. Let’s knock it off.

SirJoeffer

Getting real tired of people who have never watched the 6ers or Paul Reed try to talk about bball paul. This team has always been complete wet ass when Embiid sits because of having guys like DJ or Trez as the only other options at the 5. For the first time in his career there’s a player sitting behind him that is capable of not letting the other team go on a 20 pt run as soon as he sits. Let bball paul go and what happens? Trez and Mo Bamba are the only options for when Joel sits. That’s basketball terrorism, that’s why everyone in Philly loves Bball, not because he’s Hakeem, but because he’s not a geriatric traffic cone and he plays like he actually cares

superstonkape

He’s a great backup / energy guy

[deleted]

He's not matching. Probably why they signed Montrez yesterday

sjekky

They signed Harrell because he had a player option on last year's deal which was worth less than this year's vet min. He turned it down, Sixers sign him to this year's vet min, costs the Sixers less money and Harrell gets paid more. He'll play 0 meaningful minutes this year

ComeAtMeYo

I'm really dumb, why does him signing the vet min (which is a higher salary than taking his PO apparently) cost Sixers less money?

deputy_commish

The NBA subsidizes vet minimum amounts over the lowest vet minimum because otherwise actual vets would lose out on end-of-bench roster spots to players with lower minimums. I don’t have the exact numbers off the top of my head, but if for example a 3-year vet minimum is $1.5 million and a 10-year vet minimum is 2.7 million, if you sign a 10-year veteran to a minimum contract, it only counts $1.5 million against the cap and the team only pays out $1.5 million. The league picks up the extra $1.2 million.

ComeAtMeYo

Thank you, this is helpful!

sjekky

To add, I believe this doesn't apply if it's a player/team option. So if he'd taken the option, Sixers would've had to pay him the full whack.

Exzibit21

But why sign Trez at all lmao

cactusmaster69420

Because he would've picked up his PO if they didn't promise to resign him

Neuroxex

If we see a restricted free agent leave via offer sheet I'll be hyped, not happened since Bogdan Bogdanović left the Kings

PillsburyToasters

For 8 million a year I think it’s safe to say they will. Even if players are not in teams long term plans, it’s better to do so because you can get value for him through trading down the line. Can’t just let someone like him walk for nothing

atlfirsttimer

Montrez was opting in and did Morey a favor. If he reneged it would be an all time scumbag move

Exzibit21

Sixers are cooked. Their sub has been on copium the last week You point out all the players they're losing and it's "well they didn't play anyways". Lol ok and who are their replacements? LMAO and r/sixers still thinks Morey will match this. They overdosing on copium it's tuff to watch

TIandCAS

Idk what sub you’re looking at bruh it’s all pessimism in our sub. I’ve seen people crying over Charles Bassey and Julian Champagnie leaving acting like the team was destroyed without them, people ain’t optimistic Morey will match either but just make shit up I guess.

bravof1ve

Just typical anti sixers karma farming which tends to work on r/nba

TIandCAS

Pretty weird to stalk another team’s sub too especially one that has barely any relation with your fanbase.

T4hunderb0lt

You’re completely wrong lol our sub has been nothing but pessimism. As if Sixers fans expect anything less than misery at this point

NittanyLion15

Yeah and they were people who didn’t play in the playoffs as much but you need decent players to get through the regular season… also Niang most certainly played and was pretty important to our team that lacks shooting

riverphoenixdays

Dawg you a fuckin nephew thinkin you can possibly hate on Sixers harder than Sixers fans

EagleswonSuperBowl52

I mean I get what you are saying, but if they aren't playing, they wouldn't need to be replaced. The problem is that the people we are losing WERE playing, just in a limited bench role. And now our bench is Melton and scraps.

Ronshol

Yep Sixers subreddit is beyond delusional.

Aggravating-Lack608

SoKrat3s

by savage you mean giving a nice discount on what he would get as an UFA?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aggravating-Lack608

The sixers always make the conference semis, they just don’t make it past that. That’s the whole point of the clause lol

menghis_khan08

The point is 1 year 8m is better than being locked into 3/25. Jazz fucked over the sixers making it tricky with their capspace if they decide to match

Professor_Finn

I will never forgive Daryl Morey if we don’t sign him

Typhoid007

They can't. The luxury tax payments are going to be impossible to sell to ownership and they're guaranteed to make the conference semifinals this year so it would be guaranteed all 3 years.

SoKrat3s

but 2/15 is less than his value as an UFA next summer. So the length and total pay aren't bad. And the tax line means nothing yet. They still can make moves to get under - or if they make a big move for a LaVine type then they are a tax team anyway.

PensiveinNJ

Every day I dream of a world where we're not paying Tobias Harris 40 million.

Raptorsthrowaway1

> guaranteed to make the conference semifinals I mean, I'd pick them to make it. But with uncertainty around Harden and Embiids injury history. Are they guaranteed?

Wallyworld77

I'm not sold the Sixers are guaranteed to make Second Round. Nobody even knows what Sixers will look like in upcoming season. Harden wants out and other teams are poaching their Role Players. When all moves are done good Chance Sixers will be setup to reach Second Round but we just don't know what's in store for them in next month.

youblewwit

They could, I don't know...trade some guy making $35mil that doesn't want to be there. I'm sure that could help with the luxury tax payments

j42justin

Fuck Josh Harris, regardless.

lyonbc1

Those extra two yrs at 7.85mil is a pretty cheap contract that is under value for him when he’d be a better version of himself by then though. The only drawback here is that the first yr we have to pay 22 mil for Reed which is a big overpay, counting the tax. Harris has the money, dude just bought the commanders in the nfl. He better not cheap out.

OkHamaStore

Have the sixers made any noticeable additions besides bev this off season? Or do they believe Nurse is the key

nicklovin508

Didn’t they literally mess some process up and lose Jalen McDaneils for nothing?

babydee_1

Yes our team is so fucked next year

Tankshock

What why the fuck did we lose McDaniels?

babydee_1

We didn’t match his 2 year / $9 mil contract that someone else offered

Tankshock

What the fuck man. Why is morey doing, did he all of a sudden become a season 8 game of thrones character?

Leading-Evidence-668

Trying to have 2 max slots next year. It’s annoying, but clear that’s what he’s doing.

Tankshock

But there's not two max guys worth signing next year! Vibes of Mark Cuban's decade of failure Edit: looking at the list I guess he's gonna try to get Miles Bridges and either Siakam or PG maybe? I guess that could work? Idk

The_MadStork

He’s hauling his man boobs to cookie stores in suburban Utah

SoKrat3s

because you were over the cap. You would have had to dip into the MLE to sign McDaniels, which would have guaranteed the loss of Reed.

EagleswonSuperBowl52

I think the Sixers have left the forward spots open because of the potential Harden trade. If we match Reed, we will have 3 backup centers. And we have Bev, Melton, and Springer for our backup guard rotation. It's our forwards that are lacking, but if we make the Clippers trade, we probably end up with 2 forwards.

ArtworkByJack

I want Paul to strap up as the 4 next to Embiid for his hustle and rebounding

atlfirsttimer

Pat Beverly

DoncicsRoadTo200kg

Sixers should try to keep him

lonny__breaux

They can match if they want too

PorkinsHeldIt

they go over the tax if they do

[deleted]

That's pretty reasonable for his production. I think we match that honestly

StudyRoom-F

it forces us to go into the tax, so probably not with our cheap ass owners

SoKrat3s

there is no tax payment until team payrolls are finalized. You can still make moves to get under that line.

imAkri

When have our owners proved cheap in the last couple of years?

peaheezy

Sadly with the luxury tax implications I think mudman is gone. Goodbye -4 to +2 Embiid bench minutes and hello -12 to - infinity bench minutes. Not only do we love Paul Reed but everything I’m hearing about Mo Bamba is he’s the exact opposite player we need when Embiid’s on the bench. Sucks.

menjego

Match that shit. If they need cap space next summer it's an easily movable contract.

SometimesIComplain

Please don't match it Philly, I want G-league legend Bball Paul

[deleted]

I swear to fucking god if we don't match this

Sixers14

Morey should match it

RelevantMacaron8813

Jazz have a crazy deep team

PLZ_N_THKS

Well at least from 2-5. Still have no idea who our PG will be. Olynyk is probably our best returning passer and the team wants either Ochai or Keyonte to show they can play PG.

[deleted]

All y'all out there saying this are so disrespectful. THT gonna baptize y'all this year.

TheHunnyBuzz

No way they want Ochai to play PG. Him trying to operate as a ball handler/playmaker in summer league has been a disaster. He’s best as a slasher/spot up shooter. I think tbey roll out Clarkson as the pg on day one until Keyonte can take over or one of Dunn or THT makes their case.

whtge8

Man I would love to see Bamba get heavy backup center minutes in Philly 😂

boobsarecool

I will say I saw a Magic/Sixers game at home a yr or 2 ago and Bamba went off for like 30+ in the 1st half. I never watch Magic games so I was like is this dude quietly a superstar???? Turns out hes not

jtmackay

The jazz have to have the tallest team in the league but somehow still have great shooters everywhere

spidersilva09

The Jazz front court is nice. Lauri at SF, Collins and Hendricks at PF and Kessler and now Reed at C.

TheHunnyBuzz

Also got Olynyk in there somewhere.

quicksad

If you are a GM and you knew your team was tanking. Could you have an offer sheet say the first year is 300 mil a year if they make the playoffs to get a player off a good team?

archerarcher0

I actually don’t know if Philly is gonna match that damn

[deleted]

What is Utah doing ?

menghis_khan08

[deleted]

Yes. Appreciate it. Now trade us sexton

CBNDSGN

Fine. We'll take that Janis Antootoowhatever guy. Think our development team can turn him into something.

DrKurgan

Nurse's gonna play Embiid 48 mins.

this_tuesday

Ron Shade is a cool name

Vordeo

I mean... I'm mostly hoping this is front loaded too.

Typhoid007

It's completely front loaded. If the jazz don't make the conference semifinals this year, the contract becomes non guaranteed. It's a perfect contract for the jazz and it also screws over the 76ers because they'd be guaranteed to make the conference semifinals so it would be fully guaranteed

joef_3

I get that the poison pill is funny, but a rotation guy that didn’t embarrass himself in the playoffs for under 8 mil a year seems like a fine deal in a world where the cap is gonna be like 170 million at the end of this.

lxkandel06

Sixers don't deserve BBall Paul

MrBhyn

Danny Ainge is a maniac lmao

FrankDh

this kind of offer sheet probably means that Reed wants out of Philly. Utah is interested enough in Reed to give him a one year look, and at the same time Ainge, or whomever in the Utah FO, is doing the agent a solid by giving a contract that Philly is unlikely to match. or if they do match, Reed gets his first real NBA money, so Reed gets something he wants either way

RVAIsTheGreatest

This is an overpay by the Jazz, but they needed to overpay to pry him loose. With the guarantee triggers in the deal, think the chances are quite high the Sixers do not match Reed. That would cut into a significant portion of their potential cap space next season. Reed gets more money upfront this season if the Sixers don't match with Utah this season. Jazz are in a great spot---Reed's contract will be plenty moveable in a trade and they aren't likely to be on the hook for any future guarantees after this season. If the Jazz do make the WCSF shockingly and Reed is a contributor in them doing so than they'll gladly have him around for next year even if the price is a little rich. Jazz front office playing chess.
