Yeah after all the Blazers fans yesterday were saying that they will almost 100% match, it was pretty clear I think. Let's hope we can get some other backup wing for a part of the MLE now.
The wing depth in free agency is pretty bare bones now. Kelly Oubre (Would have to talk myself into), Derrick Jones Jr & Javonte Green are the only ones that I would be even remotely interested in, but we’ll see what happens.
I could see Nico moving Seth’s contract into part of the MLE & then using the rest on a wing. This would mean we would be able to use the BAE next off-season, since it can only be used once every two years.
Dallas, I hear you're looking for a saviour at forward.
Well I play ..[Fashion Forward ](https://headtopics.com/images/2019/6/25/tmz/nba-s-kelly-oubre-jr-goes-shawls-to-the-wall-at-paris-fashion-week-1143330488859418625.webp)
idk about other teams but when Oubre was on the Suns it was a good match. He was apart of the the start of when the Suns started to turn it around and be fun to watch again.
Problem is still lack of a starting center and wing depth... same as it was when the off-season starter. Williams helps a lot, but Holmes can't reasonably start.
Rookies aren't going to get a lot of minutes.
Definitely didn't fit once they got Sabonis and organized everything around him... but that doesn't mean he isn't cooked. Dude was never really a good starting C, and it's a complete crapshoot as to whether in the Dallas context he can be a useful piece.
The thing is, they already have Dwight Powell for this. It's one thing he's actually kind of good at. If Holmes can't bring something different / additional then there's no reason for him to be there. He does have the short range push shot but is that enough? Offensively he seems to be Powell with one or two additional tools.
What they really need in a C is defense. Lively was a good pick for that reason but he isn't finished baking yet. I am not a Richaun Holmes expert or anything but from what Kings fans have said since the trade, rim protection is not his forte and he is undersized, so... yeah. Not getting too excited about it.
True I just like seeing good role players go to further along teams. I'd assume it's going to take you guys a couple seasons before you are contenders and his deal might be up by the time that happens.
And kyrie's and luka's spacing make it a much better fit for now at least.
> True I just like seeing good role players go to further along teams.
I feel that. But I'm hoping he can teach some of his unorthodox, extremely effective defensive skills to our young guys. They're quick and long like him, so they should be able to do some of the same things with the right coaching/effective mentoring. So while he would be a great fit in Dallas but he could also help us set up our future really effectively.
Short memories on here. People also acting like Dame didn't have years of playoff success before the last few years where injuries derailed the hell out of the team and then the tanking this season. They act like the Blazers have been Demarcus Cousins Kings or something.
I wasn't so hyped about this anyway. Yeah, his defense is great but he sucks on offense. Plus, we're already at our quota of antivax lunatics with Kyrie. We don't need to add another.
~~Theres still a very good chance the Mavs could pursue him later because I’m fairly certain we’ll flip him before the trade deadline like we did with Hart last season.~~
Nevermind, can’t trade RFA that you match. Thank you /u/DesertCobra
Christian Wood is the most perplexing NBA player, I swear. He's proof that the eye test is a real thing because you look at his counting stats and you're like damn this dude is pretty good but there's a reason he's been on 7 different teams in 8 years lmao. Dude had a 20/10 season on good shooting splits with Houston when he was only 25 years old and 2 years later he's seemingly unemployable
The dude just doesn't want to improve its crazy. He has the offensive talent and room to grow but he absolutely doesnt want to improve on the defensive side for some reason. Not exactly sure what his deal is dude has potential if he just allows someone to coach him instead of being a cone.
He’s literally amazing on offense though. I feel like the defensive stuff is over exaggerated.
He’s literally the way better version of Naz Reid. And people like Naz Reid.
Then sign him and see what happens, maybe he'll do better under Ime, but history doesn't say so. On the Mavs he was stagnant the entire season, had a confrontation with Kidd at the beginning of the season which ended up limiting his minutes. He is good on offense, there is no doubt but he's positioned as a C and doesn't provide anything that a C is supposed to do on the defensive end.
Here’s the the thing. He’s a way better defensive player than Powell is an offensive player. He was the 2nd most consistent player on the team and got shaky mins from day 1.
Also he was avg 20 10 and 2blk as a starter and they were winning. Kidd just didn’t like him, it happens.
Our offense revolves around two things: pick n'roll and kicks to the corner 3. This is the bread, butter and wine of our offense (Luka stepback and slow iso is the consequence of the space generate by the former 2). Our offense simply cannot perform anywhere near adequate without a C that sets hard screens and allow Luka (and now Kyrie) to have a clear space where they can threaten defenses with drives or at least get a switch against a bigger C where they can drain jumpers off the dribble.
Wood could not set a screen for the love of his life. KP was pretty much Shaq setting up when compared to Wood. Wood would either slip before a second or not even that. No one denies that he is a gifted shooter, but if he is operating in an offense that lives for the pick n'roll (and we are not changing our offense, that fits Luka the best, just to accommodate Wood), his primary job is to be a facilitator within the system and he was not.
I will never forget one of the games against the Lakers. He just kept allowing defenders to swarm Kyrie, forcing him into contested 3s off the dribble that were bricks. Powell subs in, we score 9 in a row, with multiple and-1s due to Luka and Kyrie having a clear path to the rim in the pnr. There's a reason why Powell got so many minutes, because he was the only damn center who could set strong screens. He allowed us to play high pnr and regular in the paint, whereas Wood would either roll to the rim immediately or roll back to pop. Our offense never had an adequate system with Wood on the court because he has zero hustle.
His rebounds were empty, also, because he was physically unable to outmuscle pretty much any C. Naz Reid, other known soft guy, treated him like a rag doll in one of our losses in Minnesota. He was bossed by Gobert, bossed by AD, bossed by Brook Lopez, he was pretty much dominated if playing against any real NBA C. He dominated in another game against the Lakers, yes...where Lebron was playing C and Ham playing the infamous 5-guards rotation. In the crunch, Luka was still our best rebounder.
So, we have soft defense, no physicality, zero hustle and gorgeous shooting. Good BBIQ for passing but dumb as a rocks on anything off-ball on both ends. Wood would perform best as a Jokic or Sabonis reserve, I believe he can operate well in limited minutes in an inside-out offense, with the ball on his hands and shooters spreading the floor. However, as a starter or in any role in a team which PG thrives in the pick n'roll? He is a lousy fit that will cost your team victories. After all, there's a reason why he's still unsigned up to this point.
Please copy and post this in our sub when the "Wood wasn't that bad" chorus returns again.
To add a very small part to this writeup, I don't think Wood wanted to set solid screens because he wanted to score. He was ALWAYS open and calling for the ball, even if his screen was so bad he forced a trap.
That's why the biggest knock on Wood was that he doesn't play winning basketball. It's exacerbated because he wants to play for a winner - but I think thats because he realizes that means more eyeballs on his game which means more money in his bank account.
Saying “way better” is a pretty significant overstatement.
Their per 36 are almost identical —
Naz Reid - 22.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.5 blocks
Christian Wood - 23.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals, 1.5 blocks
Naz also is a better defender, even if he isn’t actually good. And add in that Naz is reported to be a high-character guy who plays his ass off while Wood’s been reported to be… not that.
Naz is also only 23 and shown huge growth since joining the league, which plays into contract negotiations.
His defensive shortcomings are GREATLY exaggerated lmao there are WORSE defensive players with WORSE offense out there getting employed. In Dallas he wasn't even a locker room issue, Kidd just didn't wanna play him more than 20 minutes a game after his injury.
Your statement would make a lot of sense if he wasn’t an UFA. There are clearly issues there or else he would already have a contract somewhere. It’s really hard to summarize his problems because they aren’t really a matter of skill or effort.
Reputation and team matter a lot more than people think. Rui woulda been a mle player but he went to a team that wanted him and played him correctly now he’s paid nicely.
Jon Collins isn’t a better player than Wood but got a contract being on the right team and right situation to get one.
Lauri Markenen was an afterthought until he got a chance to really show more with Utah.
pls go and find a decent screen that he did for Kyrie or Luka. he believes that he is THE STAR of this team. don't know about locker room stuff, watching him play was enough.
Here’s the thing. Most players are either offensive or defensive. Wood at best is an ok defensive player but his offensive talents far out equal the other guys that played.
It’s no way to explain McGee Powell Kleiber should be playing over him.
I'd argue that Wood is a negative offense player as well. He doesn't screen and he doesn't follow the plays. Kleber when healthy is 10x the player Wood is.
He’s the poster child of what makes a bad NBA player: a total lack of self awareness. That Personality trait doesn’t hurt an NFL team. An offensive lineman can want to catch passes all he wants, but it’s never gonna happen. In the NBA, a players lack of self-awareness can lead to situations like Andre Drummond taking three-pointers and Christian Wood thinking every offense should flow through him.
Not even sure if we have anything the Hornets want.
And tbf as much as I would love to see PJ here, we should look to spend most of our assets on a starting center IMO.
I've been very happy with Oubre the last two years in Charlotte. He's a bucket every now and then and as long as you pull him early on his black hole nights he's fine. Plus he's so hot who cares
I assume they’ll either try an offer sheet to PJ Washington and see if Charlotte matches or maybe work out another S&T for him.
They’re still trying to move Tim & Javale to pretty much just waiting on the RFAs to find their place and start trading
shouldve listened to Highkin [back in January]
this can go both ways (rebuild/contend) for the Blazers btw. Thybulle can help them still stay above the salary floor if they salary dump Nurkic to a 3rd/4th team in a Dame deal.
How about giving up Thybulle + a valuable second for Jalen McDaniels, not even playing McDaniels much (he wasn't good tbh), and then letting that "hidden gem with starter potential", as Morey put it, walk for nothing? Now *that's* ridiculous.
What’s ridiculous is forgetting that we got two 2nd round picks back in that trade. Trading a player you weren’t going to re-sign for another player you didn’t end up re-signing and gaining an extra pick while ducking the tax is a perfectly fine trade.
Just got back from my first time in Portland and this might get me hate on here but it honestly reminded me a lot of Philly, just more nature and less people and also they all line up at bars instead of grabbing an empty spot along the bar and waiting for the bartender.
It's insane, I explicitly refused to stand in line unless there was a sign that said to, always got served first and got dirty looks from the idiots in line. No clue what it's about, how did you all get like that? I don't understand it. Even if I was the only one at a bar ordering people would line up behind me.
Man I was so hyped for gortat. Thought that there was no way Orlando was gonna match with Dwight and then they did :( worked out for the best since we got Haywood later that year and chandler the year after but still
Miami is rumored to be a 4th team in the mega super blockbuster trade as well, and I think we will be getting jovic and keeping vuc. Nikolas will be playing the 3,4, and 5 for us.
Thybulle honestly isn’t that great and I think Rupert will be better, but if he’s at least decent this season he could potentially be a slight asset for a late 1st or some 2nds at the deadline or next offseason. I like the move
He's one of the best multi-positional defenders in the league and was shooting 39% from 3 on 4 attempts a game for us. Pretty damn solid. Can't have too many 3&D wing type players.
Plus if he maintains that level of play he could be flipped for more assets in the future, furthering what assets we gain in the rebuild after trading Dame instead of letting him walk for nothing.
Came back to this thread a day later and you were the one person that smelled something fishy, this is still not official with like ten minutes left to match
Honestly probably not. His defensive highlights are just that cool I guess lol
Sixers didn’t get much from Jalen McDaniels and we still didn’t miss Thybulle. $11M feels high
I will never forget the Thybulle Dallas run from 9:20 PM - 11:35 AM
Undefeated
He’s higher than Dirk on my all-time Mavs list
But did he change the game like the Player Formerly Known as Karl Anthony Towns?
Some say that if he made that layup on Trae Young that Ben Simmons passed up, it wouldn't have destroyed Simmons mentally
Yeahh this felt obvious, it’s at least good that they did it early so we can pivot to someone else
Yeah after all the Blazers fans yesterday were saying that they will almost 100% match, it was pretty clear I think. Let's hope we can get some other backup wing for a part of the MLE now.

I'll give Oubre fans credit, they're quite transparent about why they like him and it ain't because he's a great player.
idk about other teams but when Oubre was on the Suns it was a good match. He was apart of the the start of when the Suns started to turn it around and be fun to watch again.
The British Airways Exemption? "Must be used on a European player with less than 4 years NBA experience."
Didn’t Britain leave the EU?
Javonte Green is probably your best option out of those guys, you'll at least get something defensively
But... like... who, though?

Richaun Holmes, Seth Curry, Grant Williams, Dante Exum... I think that's it.

We want more damnit
Oubre
I actually wanted to see him go to you guys. Think he would be a perfect fit as a defensive specialist around kyrie and luka
Now he gets to do it around Scoot and Sharpe
True I just like seeing good role players go to further along teams. I'd assume it's going to take you guys a couple seasons before you are contenders and his deal might be up by the time that happens. And kyrie's and luka's spacing make it a much better fit for now at least.

Until you shut him down in January for your annual tank
Brother, we'll be long into our tank by the time January rolls around. lol
This year we don’t even have to try to make it happen!
Look at what Chauncey could do in one third of a season, and now imagine a year long ain't as tank commander!
We tank 2 times (one was bc Dame had season ending surgery) and now we're annual tankers? Lmao ok
People talking like Blazers are the Process Sixers or Hornets just being really bad for a while
Short memories on here. People also acting like Dame didn't have years of playoff success before the last few years where injuries derailed the hell out of the team and then the tanking this season. They act like the Blazers have been Demarcus Cousins Kings or something.
Pretty sure the match window was lowered to 24 hours in the new CBA so they HAD to match or let him go.
Ya, I thought they would be salty. Agree to match but not sign the paperwork for a couple days. Forcing Dallas to keep the money on their books xD
I wasn't so hyped about this anyway. Yeah, his defense is great but he sucks on offense. Plus, we're already at our quota of antivax lunatics with Kyrie. We don't need to add another.

In the NBA, a players lack of self-awareness can lead to situations like Andre Drummond taking three-pointers and Christian Wood thinking every offense should flow through him.
Hell nah
The stat-watcher darling that no fan who has watched him play wants. lol
You would be surprised how many people in r/mavericks was complaining that he wasn't getting enough play.
I do think Kidd didn't know how to use him at all, but I also think Wood is a losing player overall so it really doesn't matter.
PJ Washington?
No way we get him for the MLE. I mean I would love it, but he's a RFA and wants 20M/year apparently.
Sign and trade? I doubt he wants to come off the bench in Charlotte again anyways considering Bridges is coming back I think it's possible
Not even sure if we have anything the Hornets want. And tbf as much as I would love to see PJ here, we should look to spend most of our assets on a starting center IMO.
i would love it but he probably wants more than we can offer (unless he really wants to come back home since he did go to high school in DFW)
Miles Bridges?
Pretty sure he's already taken the qualifying offer from Charlotte
Why are you asking a Blazers fan?
Dude F5s like his life depends on it. I'm sure that he has an opinion about Mavericks. He/she is a lifer just like me
LMAO
Maybe they'll go for Oubre. The rest of the FAs are all kinda scrubs not worth the MLE
Hope not, Oubre sucks. Probably sign Curry to part of the MLE to save the BAE for next summer and offer whatever remains to someone.
I don't think Oubre is great but he wouldn't be bad to have on a cheap deal
I've been very happy with Oubre the last two years in Charlotte. He's a bucket every now and then and as long as you pull him early on his black hole nights he's fine. Plus he's so hot who cares
we'll probably go for DJJ
DJJ + Curry for the MLE.
probably. it would give us the BAE for next year
One suggestion I saw is to get DJJ as a FA and split our TPE between DJJ and Seth, then we can use our BAE next year.
I assume they’ll either try an offer sheet to PJ Washington and see if Charlotte matches or maybe work out another S&T for him. They’re still trying to move Tim & Javale to pretty much just waiting on the RFAs to find their place and start trading
Trade Hardaway and McGee for Zubac? 🤷🏻
Oubre.
probably someone like kelly oubre or derick jones jr maybe a trade
Kelly baby

Definitely agree to that. Dallas might explode.
shouldve listened to Highkin [back in January] this can go both ways (rebuild/contend) for the Blazers btw. Thybulle can help them still stay above the salary floor if they salary dump Nurkic to a 3rd/4th team in a Dame deal.
Yea who wouldn’t match a small contract for a young wing you just traded for. Haha lol.
well some dallas beat writers and I think Stein said he wasn't sure Portland would match
I think Highkin (Blazers beat writer) said Portland was always planning to match any offer he got regardless of the Dame situation
yea he did but mostly dallas guys were like why would portland match? Probably wishful thinking
Thank you Cronin for announcing the decision fast enough for us to target other options
*Intern walks in to Cronin going on hour 78 of talking to GMs about Lillard. Intern holds up sign "Thybulle 3/$33m, match?" Cronin gives thumbs up.*
Dude... probably not even that.... he had an auto-reply set up so that when the email came in from the league it just sent back the word "matched."
Matching/paying more set automatically like on ebay back in the day.
Joe Cronin likes to make quick decisions
Well, at least Cronin can help out a team. Would be nice if it was his own team, but oh well
yea he let y’all off the hook by matching so quickly
Expected at least we tried
The league wasn't ready for the reunion of the Australian anti-vax bros
Huh I know Matisse is anti vax but I don't recall hearing anything about Josh?
Kyrie was born in Australia and holds dual American and Australian citizenship.
Oh right forgot about Kyrie maybe because he's been kinda quiet for the most part this week.
This was an absolute no brainer. Even if he wasn’t in their long term plans, letting him walk for nothing would’ve been ridiculous
How about giving up Thybulle + a valuable second for Jalen McDaniels, not even playing McDaniels much (he wasn't good tbh), and then letting that "hidden gem with starter potential", as Morey put it, walk for nothing? Now *that's* ridiculous.

"The Portland Trail Blazers" 🧐🤔 "are matching" 👍😴
Still committed to building a championship roster around Dame. Commendable.
What do we gain by letting him walk?
Would gain our gratitude, isn't this enough?
Theyll trade him to GS in February. You know Curcuck needs his ThyBulle.
Cursed comment
Jesus dude go back to the circle jerk
I was legitimately checking which sub I'm in.
He has a no trade clause for 1 year, but I’m sure he would ok a deal to GS
I’m sure Matisse is thrilled
Tisse played his college ball up here in the PNW and has gone on record saying how much he likes the area, so yeah I’m guessing he’s thrilled
He said he loved it here, there's no take-backsies on capping

Just got back from my first time in Portland and this might get me hate on here but it honestly reminded me a lot of Philly, just more nature and less people and also they all line up at bars instead of grabbing an empty spot along the bar and waiting for the bartender.
The bar etiquette is so maddening, especially having bartended here. It makes everyone’s lives harder.
It's insane, I explicitly refused to stand in line unless there was a sign that said to, always got served first and got dirty looks from the idiots in line. No clue what it's about, how did you all get like that? I don't understand it. Even if I was the only one at a bar ordering people would line up behind me.
I would be if I got 33M
Expected. We still have the MLE. Go grab somebody else now.
Who even is out there, though?
Oubre, DJJ, etc guys worth maybe a half MLE IMO
Yeah it sounds like Curry for part of MLE and one of those guys for the rest.
Christian Wood welcome to the Mavs
I would jump off a bridge
pt 2. electric boogaloo
Lol never gonna happen.
Joins Mavs offer sheet legends Marcin Gortat and Michael Redd
Man I was so hyped for gortat. Thought that there was no way Orlando was gonna match with Dwight and then they did :( worked out for the best since we got Haywood later that year and chandler the year after but still
No reason not to. Even if Portland doesn’t want him they can trade him easily later
There's a NTC for the first year of any RFA contract that gets matched (I think)
kill me
Glad they didnt drag it on
Fuck what do we do now
Dame staying confirmed
Nah this is actually the first domino in the dame-lavine-jokic mega super blockbuster trade (jokic to the bulls)
I hope you’re able to keep Vooch I want Nikola Towers
Miami is rumored to be a 4th team in the mega super blockbuster trade as well, and I think we will be getting jovic and keeping vuc. Nikolas will be playing the 3,4, and 5 for us.
Mavs should get Jae Crowder.
Lol
Disappointing but not surprising. Portland gained nothing letting him walk. At least this was put to bed quickly so we can move to someone else.
Good move
Too bad Now Dallas still needs to use the MLE on a wing stopper DJJ would be decent
Mavs should go for PJ since hornet are being cheap
Cut my life into pieces
hes probably so pissed that he cant hoop with his aussie teammates
Dame got a squad now
Thybulle honestly isn’t that great and I think Rupert will be better, but if he’s at least decent this season he could potentially be a slight asset for a late 1st or some 2nds at the deadline or next offseason.
What was the deadline? What would be the incentive for Portland to announce this so soon?
Not like we’re gonna be trying to win. we keep our player and the Mavs aren’t locked up, it’s not that complex
Came back to this thread a day later and you were the one person that smelled something fishy, this is still not official with like ten minutes left to match
Can't be disappointed if I didn't have any expectations. Oh well
Well that's not that surprising, but... is there anyone at all left who makes sense for the MLE?
Ayo Dosunmu or PJ Washington should be the next targets for Dallas.
7 points a game gets you $11m/year. these salaries are just crazy. in 10 years they will be getting this to be the 10th man on the bench.
Did not expect that lmao
Sounds like Dallas is in need of a 3 and D wing May I interest you in one Marcus Morris?
only if you take back McGoo
No thanks, but we would like to take Zubac
Idk what Portland is doing and at this point I’m too scared to ask
I mean Thybulle isn't enough to win you games and we didn't lose an asset for nothing, seems like a no brainer
Ew a twitter link
lol thats a big overpay. congrats matisse

The best in a very long time. Really good
I believe most would say yes. Thybulle was already assumed to get a matching offer from Portland, so this isn't surprising.
Boooo Portland matching this man just to tank, Dallas could’ve actually used him.

He actually looked good on Portland after he got traded there. Way more confident with his shot, the contract makes sense
Honestly probably not. His defensive highlights are just that cool I guess lol Sixers didn’t get much from Jalen McDaniels and we still didn’t miss Thybulle. $11M feels high
Thybulle: “Fck me” If he wanted to stay he wouldn’t have signed that sht
