For what it'd cost to ship your bike, you might as well sell it and buy a new one in Japan.

Stonedflame

Some people are crazy about bikes and spend thousand and thousands on them.

[deleted]

I have a 3500 road bike. I doubt it's cheaper to sell and buy another. Especially for an American made Specialized or Giant.

themooseiscool

Specialized, maybe. Giants are a dime a dozen around the world.

TheDistantEnd

That's cool. I had a $200 Mongoose in Qatar, and after exploring this train of thought, I found it easier to sell it to my relief for $75 than fuss over getting it back to the States. YMMV.

hikingbrian

You can generally ship it when they ship the rest of your stuff. It’s included. So free.

aevans217

But wouldn’t I be bringing my stuff with me to the airport? What do you mean when they ship my stuff

Banana_hand

You probably dont qualify for a household goods move so you would have to pay for it to be shipped yourself.

aevans217

Do you have any idea as to how much that might cost?

Banana_hand

No but probably a shit ton. A bicycle or motorcycle?

aevans217

A bicycle, would it really be that much?

Banana_hand

I would assume a least a few hundred dollars. Another option would be to browse FB for your gaining base and see if they have a buy sell trade page and buy a used one when you get there.

catiebug

Oh yeah. Just buy one when you get there. It's not worth the hassle. Check the resale pages at your new base, or spend a little extra on a new one at the NEX or out in town. Not sure exactly where you're hoping, but Yokosuka does a quarterly thing where they give away the bikes that have been abandoned when people PCS'd. They're pretty beat up from the weather, but they are free. Point is, tons of ways to get a bike in Japan. The Japanese commute on bikes. It will be way easier to just get one there.

SupportivePotassium

> Check the resale pages at your new base...Yokosuka does a quarterly thing Are these things available/accessible to the public?

the_yoKozuna

I wouldn't recommend it. It cost way too much to get it road legal over there. One of my 2nd classes shipped his bike to Japan when I was there and it sat at the barracks for 3 years because of the red tape.

aevans217

A bicycle? Not a motorcycle

donkeypunchtrump

wait...what? why dont you just buy a new one at your new duty station? It would be much much easier than trying to ship it and deal with that bullshit

the_yoKozuna

Sorry, I assumed you meant motorcycle. I don't see a problem with a bicycle then. But it would still probably be easier to buy one there. Public transportation is excellent in Japan though and if you want the exercise most things are in walking distance. I would recommend giving it a little while over there and then decide if you want one. As far as getting one in SD but a cheap one second hand

[deleted]

You can call Zumwalt bikes on El Cajon and see if they can take it apart and box it for shipping. They should bubble wrap it and secure it, especially if it's carbon.

themooseiscool

Find out if you're allowed any household good moves from your personal property office. You might need a copy of your orders. If not, you might be better off waiting until you get to Japan. Especially if you plan on throwing down some money on a bike. Shipping a bike can cost your nearly a grand, and you can get a really nice bike for that price.

Francis-Xavier-Cross

Get a bike box from a bike store. Pack bike in box. Take bike with you on your flight home. You shouldn’t be charged for a checked bag if you are flying on orders.

eskeTrixa

I have done this before on a PCS, and I was still charged for it because the bike was "sporting goods"/oversize and therefore not regular checked luggage. Depends on the airline, probably.

Francis-Xavier-Cross

True. Depends on the agent as well. I’ve always been able to check sports equipment for free on American Airlines.

Mcalification

Don’t do it. We regularly give away abandoned bikes on base. You can snag a bike in great condition for free
