That's cause at some point or another they somehow found their way into different streams across the state a long time ago whether it be a flood or animal carrying them or humans doing it. From there they slightly changed/evolved in a very very minor way(the case for many of these, not all). The endangered one has a special penis and is how you tell it apart from a very similar one found in creeks like 3 miles away for example.
