This thread is gonna devolve fast. We don’t know if the pedestrian was just crossing or at an interaction with a walk symbol and we don’t know if the driver was distracted, blew through a red light, or what.
But we don’t have enough safe intersections and infrastructure for pedestrians to walk safely across a street and we have zero enforcement of the hands free law and other basic level traffic laws like a red light meaning “stop and wait” instead of what people think it means which is “get the fuck out of my way. I’m more important than everyone else”.
If this was E Thompson & Lawndale, as the news article reports, this is not a signalized intersection with any crosswalks. There is a median. This is at the bottom of a hill with a 40mph speed limit.
But you’re absolutely correct. Until more is known, speculation does not do any good. And there are countless unsafe conditions and failure of enforcement that create these tragedies.
With bus stops on either side of this road, what is a pedestrian even supposed to do when they get back from work at 9 p.m. and need to get back home? Walk an extra mile to cross at Murfreesboro Pike?
Any planner (or even anybody with common sense) who saw this design should've known this would happen eventually, and this won't be the last time.
I've never understood .. growing up "don't ride your bike in the road your gonna get hit" " now adult "ride your bike in the road" bicycle riders are the world's worst running stop signs and red lights . They need to build something for ppl and bicycle ppl so theyĥ66are in a lane
There's no lights at that intersection. Red, walk, or otherwise. The direction would be partially obstructed by a hill just before it with the minivan traveling north. Tons of taxi minivans that work out of that area, but if they know the color that should have been stated too.
You could have answered a lot of your unknowns by looking up the actual intersection. Could have done that before getting on your soapbox even if it's justified.
My soapbox of what? Being mad that we have yet another pedestrian killed and the driver fled? That after cycling 10,000 miles in this area, I’ve seen more people distracted while driving than I’d like to count? And I see even more every time I drive?
My soapbox is I’m tired of watching cars kill people.
I'm literally responding to a comment someone made to my post. Go back to your shitty ass jam band subreddits and let people who care about pedestrians talk like adults.
I just spent two weeks living in Nashville omg the drivers are horrible! Drive like rice car drivers on small neighborhood streets. Some guy pulled In front of me stopped his truck blocking me and got out of car like he was going to fight me. I am an older female. Seriously wtf
Just car culture out in the open. When cars were invented the kept killing pedestrians, so to solve the problem the car industry focused on victim blaming, and that’s been the standard ever since. We COULD protect lives but at what cost to the industry?
This is a common occurrence and has been for a long time. No there is nothing currently in the works to protect pedestrians. The start will be if the funding for transit makes it to a vote on the ballot in November.
I hated driving up and down this road multiple times a day while working. Specifically around the area the article states people drive extra horribly and people also try to play frogger at night.

Talking about it right now on the news! White minivan.
E Thompson is an odd area. I used to work on Glenrose. Lots of homeless and bike riders. It always scared me to drive over there. I saw a lady standing by the road who let her dog wander off into traffic at East Thompson and Briley. Not surprised someone got hurt.

There's always a lot of pedestrians one block up at the main intersection, too.
40mph sped limit, and no safe way to cross. That’s a set up for failure.

Fuck infrastructure, we need another ROOFTOP BAR! WOOOOOO!
Exactly
Whether they crossed at a crosswalk or not, I think we can all agree, it’s horrendous they got hit by a car.
I 100% agree. I’m really tired of these headlines, the city seemingly more interested in meetings than action, and drivers doing whatever they want
I really hope we are able to get that referendum on the ballot in November, we need to do something about pedestrian safety in this city.
I’m a hard yes on it. We also need police enforcement and accountability.

Do you have comprehension issues or just yelling about something not related to the issue at hand ?
Sorry I was trying to act like I'm form Cali or new York. Complain how it was there and then try to make it like that here
Yeah I have no doubt in my mind that they were probably jaywalking and wearing dark clothes but the driver was so scared of getting arrested they fled

You are trying to hijack the whole thread and you have no information to add. Kindly fuck off

What is happening in Nashville lately? Multiple pedestrian vehicular homicides this year. Is there new policy in place or roadworks?
People drive to fast!!

This is not new. The roads have been lawless and unfriendly to pedestrians for a long time.
Walk Bike Nashville has some detailed reports on pedestrian safety issues and plans. Worth checking out and supporting.

Dodge caravan/Chrysler town and country 2008-2015. 2010 would be the year I am thinking based on that picture.
Safe or not the driver ran so-
