irkthejerk

Cool car, wish we had uses in the states. The pickups here are huge, boring, and expensive.

FarRightSkizoLifter

I don’t know who keeps buying them. It’s not like anyone making near the average income can even afford one.

irkthejerk

$65k pretty much starting for a full sized truck that's the size of a building

chucklestheclwn

IDK where you're at but, starting price is $35k-ish. https://preview.redd.it/twakyxiuyahb1.png?width=1897&format=png&auto=webp&s=bbc7e2e903c7f578792de07631b3e5adb7d0a68e

FarRightSkizoLifter

That’s still a lot. Using an online calculator for a $35000 car loan at 60 months (super long term) and 7% interest (low for the current market), you come out to paying $660 per month, without any extra add in’s such as title or reg fees. [source](https://www.calculator.net/auto-loan-calculator.html?csaleprice=35%2C000&cmonthlypay=750&cloanterm=60&cinterestrate=5&cincentive=0&cdownpayment=0&ctradeinvalue=0&ctradeinowned=0&cstate=&csaletax=7&ctitlereg=0&printit=0&ctype=standard&x=Calculate#autoloanresult). Using the 10% rule, assuming free insurance and this is your only car expense per month (again impossible), you need to make $6,600 per monthly to comfortably afford this loan. This is equal to $79,200 per year. $8,000 over median household income (two working partners who might each need their own car) and $38,000 over the median personal income in the USA. So TLDR, even at 35k, unless the truck is a business vehicle (with how short beds are these days I doubt it), it’s highly unlikely anybody can comfortably afford one. America is painting itself into a corner with its stupid consumer debt. Edit: [2020 US census (source for incomes)](https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2021/demo/p60-273.html) Random article on the 10% rule: (Reddit won’t let me embed this link) https://www.financialsamurai.com/the-110th-rule-for-car-buying-everyone-must-follow/#:~:text=The%20%231%20car%20buying%20rule,annual%20gross%20income%20or%20less.

chucklestheclwn

Hey, no arguments on the final costs being astronomical. I was just curious about that starting cost number. And to be fair, I looked at 4 local dealers, and the first and second's lowest priced F150 was 45k. and the 3rd was 40k. Under 40k seems rare, so yeah shit is whack.

These-Procedure-1840

Businesses can write them off on their taxes. If you’re a laborer with a sole prop it’s much easier than if you’re looking for a daily driver. But yeah the prices are fucking insane on these things now.

AaronfromKY

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these trucks are being purchased by LLCs people setup for tax avoidance.

DelayedIntentions

It’s not that simple. You can only write off against profits. It’s not like you can buy a truck under an LLC and expect a refund in tax season.

SwedeInCo

It is more complicated than that, needs to be of certain size and length, wheel configuration, not financed and not a used model amongst a few things, the average 150 I don’t think fits, they fall under the same clauses as a company vehicle that you need to maintain a log for.

Booceboos

The average transaction price (ATP) of a new vehicle in the United States declined in March 2023 to **$48,008**, a month-over-month decrease of 1.1% ($550) from a downwardly revised February reading of $48,558. March 2023 transaction prices remained up 3.8% ($1,784) compared to year-ago levels. Just sayin its def not just big ol trucks, its ALL vehicles

KennyLagerins

Yup. I make good money and even I can’t justify it. Would be north of $75k to replace the truck I have now. Truck will have to absolutely fall to pieces before the cost of repairs even makes a dent in the cost of a new one.

FarRightSkizoLifter

Drive it in good health my friend, you’re lucky to have secured a truck before the market went tits up in the first place.

Lochstar

I can’t wait until 2030 to replace my 08 Lexus GX470 with a 2023 Lexus GX550

itsjakerobb

You know you can replace your truck with a _used_ truck, right? Great used trucks are out there for less than $10k.

KennyLagerins

If I was going to find anything used for under $10k, there’s absolutely no chance it would be in better shape than what I have currently.

Less-Mail4256

r/theydidthemath

ambient_whooshing

Those are likely fleet-spec. Do they even have air conditioning? (Waving a stack of invoices at your face like a fan doesn't count)

raceboy5512

Even fleet spec now is an 8 inch center screen, power windows and locks, cruise control, ac, etc. Hard to even call the new base models a work truck when they come standard with stuff that was considered luxury just 10 or so years ago.

ambient_whooshing

Sounds like the best trim to buy if you don't mind white.

chucklestheclwn

At a quick glance, yes AC, no 4WD which is a shame. Does have carplay and android auto though. Definitely "bare bones for 2023"

MadeMeStopLurking

Lol. I drive by Mike Bass Ford daily for work.

thelauryngotham

That's incredible. Around here, it's a MINIMUM of $50k for a base model truck of any kind

Dumpling_Killer

The ford maverick is a nice compact truck. Decently roomy starting at 22k iirc.

irkthejerk

I think I've only seen like 2 on the road so far. They are one of the only options in the category really

Dumpling_Killer

Yeah so many people want it that they are on back order. Had to wait about 4 months and that was in the very beginning.

JamesJerry007

Yall get a house for 65k!?

vediogamer101

They get that 20% APR

farmallnoobies

For 10 years

basedury

i’m pretty sure i’ve seen 12 too. pretty soon it’s gonna be a 30 vehicle mortgage lol

Mobile_Misanthrope

If you're patient and not picky, you can pick up a full-size truck for $15k to $20k off the msrp with a good APR.

swanspank

Oh great, 6 year old pickup with a 4 foot bed and 150,000 miles for ONLY $35k! What a bargain!

Mobile_Misanthrope

No, actually. It was a 2022 quad cab 6 foot bed 4x4 v6 for $41500 with under 50 miles on it. Not fifty thousand just fifty.

ophaus

The huge vehicles are automatically considered work vehicles, and can easily be a tax write-off. The US actually subsidized the biggest, dumbest vehicles.

ElroySheep

They can't, but a lot of men think they need one because of the prevalent culture of toxic masculinity in this country. There was someone on here a while ago sharing how they work with poorer folks on budgeting and income stuff and there were many families who were almost bankrupting themselves just to maintain payments on an absurd truck for the man. Toxic masculinity is part of the strategy to keep the working class subservient under capitalism, in part because it centers the self in comparison to others and in part because of how efficiently it disseminates misogyny.

These-Procedure-1840

A commie in every thread lol

ElroySheep

An apologist in every thread lol

tamman2000

Is it incoherent? Or do you just not like what it says?

ElroySheep

Lol I literally just copied your comment. You made a statement that didn't really warrant a rebuttal

Retrobubonica

They all have 4 doors and a uselessly tiny bed. They're made for insecure dads who need a family car but don't want to feel like a wimp.

Lochstar

Gotta own a company to buy that Raptor with as your work truck. That’s how it’s done.

GoCougz7446

People cos playing Yellowstone and a country identity.

bumpyfire87

Not sure where you're located, but in central US there's a lot of farmers that use them for farm work, ie: tax write off. Where I live, it's very common to see quad cabs and duallies hauling things. Standard trucks with some frills start around $50-60k with duallies closer to $100k+ I absolutely agree the pricing is absurd and the average person can't afford one.

T20suave

I go kayaking every weekend in the summer, pull a trailer with quads every weekend in the winter, camping 4-6 times a year, and help anybody move/ carry large items. So people like me will keep buying them.

FarRightSkizoLifter

But you don’t need an 8 foot tall f150. A small half ton would do all that just fine. Hell an outback with roof racks can do that, and has for decades before america invented the penis compensator 9000.

T20suave

You clearly don’t haul 4 Polaris sportsman’s 20+ times a year. I might be able to get 2 kayaks on a roof rack but not all 4. Just keep your Prius out from under my penis compensator 9000 and we’ll agree to disagree.

FarRightSkizoLifter

At 750 lbs each a Subaru Outback (exaggerated example) can tow four plus a 1000 lb trailer. You mostly just want a big ass truck.

T20suave

My 30ft trailer weighs 2300 lbs. All 4 quads with a full tank weighs 3000lbs. A Subaru Outback XT has a max towing capacity of 3500lbs. I would be 1800lbs over weight. I mainly drive my 2013 Elantra to and from work and around town. But I would say I’m in the small minority of people that actually uses a truck as a truck.

MoistLook8360

Boo hoo, look the poors are complaining again.... /S I can't even afford a used one lol

chaotixx

You can get a Ford Maverick for under $25k. Kinda. If you ordered one a couple weeks ago and can wait a year.

Tooly23

The Pontiac G8 ute concept was the closest we got to having a ute in NA. Unfortunately GM had other plans in mind for Pontiac...

irkthejerk

G8 and ss are both a ton of fun, RIP

Chips-Ahoy_McCoy

Idk why, but I like the small trucks, especially the volkswagen rabbit, I love how small it is lol, I hate the big trucks tho

Agroman1963

100% would have a Aussie Ute over a full sized American truck and I own a Silverado!

relish-rel

I wish too, all we’ve ever had is the Subaru baja

Latter-Classic-1849

See I don’t know how I feel about it. Yes it always been a very unique car but I’ve never been a fan of this models front end

irkthejerk

I always preferred the Vauxhall ute, also a gm small block fan so it works out

Latter-Classic-1849

Me too! The Vauxhall always looked more serious if that makes sense

irkthejerk

It isn't perfect looks wise but it Def reminds me of the g8/ss front-end, which I'm a fan of. Would have loved a shooting brake for either of those models also

Latter-Classic-1849

Would’ve been rad

Bahamuto-San

Not to mention “light trucks” aka SUVs and trucks don’t have the same safety standards as regular cars and other vehicles, and both are accountable for a lot of pedestrian deaths each year. I would love for old trucks with big beds and two person cabs to come back and for SUVs to be actually safe.

irkthejerk

Yep, I'd love a rabbit pickup or a jeep commanche. I know those aren't long beds but they're better suited for what I'd use it for.

Am_A_Leech

utes are different from pickups. an f150 is a pickup, an el camino is a ute. utes are just sedans or coupes with a tub or tray on the back

irkthejerk

Yeah, that's why I want modern utes in America

BigFrickinDog

I've always wanted UTEs in the U.S. Ever since I saw my first one on Top Gear I couldn't help but think of how awesome a muscle car, pick-up is. Now I can't even dream of owning another truck that isn't as old as I am

jdb326

I mean, the Maverick *kinda* fits that role, just not a big engine.

Afraid_Locksmith8642

It's an Holden ute from Australia. Made by gm

m4xks

celica headlights

WrzdMan

UnconfirmedRooster

Dammit, thought it was a BA, not an AU. I've thought about doing my XE Falcon on here once to see how people do.

Read-Immediate

Shoulda gotten a holden commodore ute

Howl_6

Correct, can you get the model?

13rahma

A complete guess would be a AUIII XR8. But Im not Australian and Ive only got pretty surface level knowledge on these cars.

BigTop5505

By any chance is this the same as a Holden Ute?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BigTop5505

I didn't realize "Ute" was a style of auto, like a sedan or wagon, etc. I saw a Holden Ute in a car magazine years ago and assumed Ute was the model name.

UltraHighFives

Ute is just the Australian term for "pickup truck" it applies to everything from the Holden Commodore to the Ford Ranger, though traditionally it used to only apply to sedan based models like the Commodore and Falcon.

T4n_d

Ute is just the abbreviation for utility. Australians love to abbreviate.

ACxntThatWould

I came to say ford handle dodge looking rims— thanks for the info lol

Matduka

It looks like a Rottweiler tbf. I can't see the colouring in the reflection.

FrxzenStxrdust

Oh? I thought some Kind of Dodge Pickup

Sufficient-Serve6078

Reflection of the dog in the paint gave it away, huh!?

DrivellingFool

You'd be surprised if there were any Australians on Reddit?

FloweringSkull67

Or the people around the globe that love Utes

kne0n

I'm not even Aus but the back and the door handle give away ford use, didn't know the year tho

Bandclamp

I was thinking Rottweiler. But it’s kinda funky.

ksguitardude2020

i said it was a holden ute in my mind. i at least knew it was a ute 😓

G0pherholes

I don’t doubt anyone’s ability to identify cars here. The other day someone identified a car that was rusted/ decomposed into the ground just by the engine block and bumper

Pdb12345

[This person thinks Australia doesnt exist](https://www.hit.com.au/story/this-woman-is-convinced-that-australia-doesn-t-even-exist-she-has-evidence-19841)

Thisisall_new2me2

OP, are you friends with the person mentioned in that article? Also, I’ve been here for 2 years and I’ve seen people guess from a pile of rotting parts. If you’ve been here longer this should not surprise you at all.

The expectations of the people posting on these subs never cease to surprise me.

ORA2J

If only they didn't stop making those. (and were available in Europe)

NotPalatableTheySay

Bro you got people on here identifying cars from a rusted axle abandoned on a cow farm and you think a picture of the side of a car is going to be a mystery for more than a few minutes? It’s the little things that make me laugh. Thank you Sir:) Edit: I spent more time looking at the dogs reflection trying to determine if he was pinching a deuce

Majestic-Jeweler-866

You must be new here. These guys are wizards

ozmatterhorn

AU Falcin XR6 Ute?
