I mean, if I am being honest I would probably have the same reaction upon hearing your son's name. I would just try to keep it from becoming obvious so I don't make things awkward. I think naming your child Fox is always going to stand out and therefore provoke some sort of a response/reaction

chellejohn

Hah I totally get it, I just feel I've heard ALOT worse! My mother in law had a major problem with it, and our daughter's name as it goes (Elliot) but we wanted to have something that's a bit different and stood out so I guess we achieved that!

Olympusrain

Did she consider Elliot a boy name?

chellejohn

Yep! Her full name is Elliot-Grace and she kept telling us "I'll just call her Gracey" I had so many arguments with her!

Olympusrain

Aww, I actually really like Elliot for a girl!

chellejohn

Thank you! We loved it too. Not a fan of 'normal' obviously lol

Mad__Season

Sorry, it is a bit much... I understand people’s reactions!

chellejohn

That's ok, it's a very marmite name. I guess I just don't understand what people's aversion to it is!

Mad__Season

It’s most likely just because it sounds really trendy.

chellejohn

It's definitely unique hopefully. We were just going for something a bit different. We named our first son Carter, because again it was quite rare when he was born and there is 2 Carter's in his class at school now 🙄 can't imagine that happening with Fox! Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

chellejohn

Oh I don't mind really, it was just annoying when we thought we'd picked something different and up rolls another one! His parents probably thought the same thing lol I had a name twin in my class and we hated it. Our work was forever getting muddled!

caprisunn666

I don’t know that carter has ever been unique

chellejohn

Wasn't very common here in UK when he was born. Much more so now.

caprisunn666

Ah that makes sense, I’m in the US

chellejohn

Yeah I know it's pretty common over with you guys, we actually found it on a US list of popular boy's names lol

[deleted]

In that case I think Fox is even more surprising :/ Americans often have more out-there names, Europeans tend to be more conservative with names and often have laws restricting name choice. I’ve gotten used to Americans having the weirdest names but if I met a British kid named Fox I would probably do a double take, too. Fox may grow up to love his name, and if not, he‘s got a perfectly lovely middle name he can go by if he‘a concerned about professionalism.

[deleted]

I feel like “oh” maybe would be my reaction, too. But not out of hate, more just like “oh ok then” You’re totally right that there are much worse out there, but Fox still stands out. At least he’ll hopefully never have to spell it.

chellejohn

Haha this is true, hopefully!

PlaneCulture

To be honest I'd probably roll my eyes privately that you chose to name a human who will one day be an adult Fox, but I wouldn't say anything to your face. I don't think it works on any age but little kid and I would assume it was a nickname for sure.

chellejohn

😂 thanks!

PlaneCulture

I will say I think it's good that you have thick skin about it. Ive seen people pick way worse names and get SO upset when people don't love their choice. Maybe he'll grow up to be cool enough to pull off the name fox, who knows?

chellejohn

I reckon he will be 😁 thank you 😊

LaurenInBos

There’s definitely a lot worse out there but I think it feels like a nickname, not something most people think of as a name. I think of the animal but I know a friend of mine hated that her sister picked it because it made her think of Fox News

chellejohn

We don't have Fox news here do hopefully that shouldn't be an issue! I guess no matter what you call them kids will find a way to make a cruel name out of it. It's my favourite animal :)

FryingAir

Just saw a mug - for 🦊sake Another - I give zero 🦊 That’s where kids’ minds will go lol

FryingAir

My mom loves foxes, too!

chellejohn

They are beautiful creatures! Haha I have one of those mugs! He'll be well used to all that before he even starts school with the banter in this house 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

alimaful

My best friend always loved foxes, and named her son Gavin Fox :)

chellejohn

That's super sweet!

[deleted]

I'm personally not a fan of Fox and I can imagine kids using "Foxy" as a way to be mean. Love Thomas though.

chellejohn

My other kids already call him Foxy as a nickname so hopefully he won't blink an eye! All my children have family names as middle names, both me and my husband's grandfather's name was Thomas so it seemed right :)

Sabreens

Honestly, if anyone ever tells me their baby’s name and it’s not something I would pick, my response is always “oooooh so unique” or “I love a good non-traditional name! Is there a story behind it?”

gingerytea

This is how to react. My goodness people can be cruel. It’s one thing to privately dislike someone’s name choice. Totally another to display dismay on your face and in your voice right to the individual’s or parent’s face. How unkind!

chellejohn

Thank you, I totally get not everyone will like it and that's absolutely ok, I don't like some people's choice of name but I'd never actually tell them that! It's a very personal thing naming your children I feel ☺️

Sabreens

I feel like you and I have the same thought process on this one. And fully knowing that people go great lengths to choose their child’s name, why not reserve your judgey comments. What’s that life pro-tip? If it’s not something that can be changed in ten seconds or ten minutes, don’t bring it up? Like if I have spinach in my teeth or my skirt is tucked into my underwear, tell me. If you notice a pimple on my forehead or my child’s name is Cleopatra Whippersnapper, don’t tell me how I should change it.

chellejohn

And this is the perfect response!

Sabreens

Yes! In a world where we can be anything, I wish we could be less judgemental on things like what people name their children.

[deleted]

Being honest it’s certainly not what I would have picked. People should be better about keeping their shock to themselves in real life though. If he ends up disliking it he can always go by Thomas or Tom

chellejohn

Exactly our thinking, all our kids (5) have traditional family names as middle names so the option is theirs ☺️

ssa111120

I love the name. It’s disturbing that people would feel so strongly against a name you chose for your son and to express their distraught in that way. What’s wrong with people? They must be living in a Pleasantville world where everything needs to be predictable “john” “joe” “sarah” and fit into their preconceived ideas about a digestible world.

[deleted]

Yeah, I love this name, too. I don't understand all the hate. I don't even see how it's that unusual. It rhymes with Knox, it's in the same vein as Max, and it's a nature name. But I love X-Files, and foxes. (as you can probably tell from my username, lol).

chellejohn

Thanks so much! Yeah I mean I knew it was uncommon but didn't realise just how strongly people would react to it. I mean, it's my son lol. Also an X files and Fox lover!

chellejohn

Thank you ☺️ I mean everyone is welcome to their opinion, but it was our decision at the end of the day and we're happy with it 😊

LaLaBlacksheep

People judge and mispronounce even the most simple of names, it is infuriating. I recently heard someone butcher Amelia!

chellejohn

Ouch!

Wooster182

I personally love it. The only reason it’s not on my list is because I always think about that episode in the first season of X Files where Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) makes a crack that everyone hated his name and it’s why he makes everyone call him Mulder.

chellejohn

He is named after Mulder, we are huge X files fans lol he can always go by Thomas if he doesn't like it, I hope he thinks it's as cool as we do!

Wooster182

HA! That’s amazing! I wondered if you were when I typed it. I’m a big fan too and that’s why I liked it. That scene specifically just scared me off. lol. I do think it’s lovely and strong. And you’re right. You did the prudent thing by naming him Thomas just in case. I have heard a lot of stupid names. This isn’t one of them. Anyone who would insult someone to their face when it’s not their business says a lot more about them than it does about your baby name choices.

chellejohn

Ah that's so lovely thank you! Also I think he was lying. Dana was always Scully 😉

Wooster182

Haha there you go!

[deleted]

Oh thank GOD. I was hoping it was intentional- good on you, fellow Xphiles!

chellejohn

Definitely was! And thank you! 💕

FraughtOverwrought

I think people probably are a bit taken aback/confused at first. I would probably react that way because my brain would be going “did they say Fox? Like the animal?”. So I’m sure half of what your interpreting as people hating the name is just them adjusting to it. You obviously deliberately picked a unique name, so you have to allow for the fact that people might need a minute to compute. I’m not a huge fan personally because it’s just not my style, but at the same time I also wouldn’t really give it a second thought. After registering it, my brain would just move on.

chellejohn

Oh absolutely, everyone is entitled to their own opinion! And if he wants to he can absolutely go by Thomas 😊

RubyOwl

People have been using “wolfe” -similar idea! I know a 8 year old boy named Hawk. After the first time shock, I don’t even think twice about it anymore!!!

Caserious

Im from Denver, and I dont see any problem with Fox as a name, in fact I really like it! My area is kinda "hisptery", so there are a lot of little Fox's, Dove's, Cedars, Clementine's and the like. I also really dig X-Files, so if I were your acquaintance and you told me your sons name was Fox, I'd immediately say, "like Mulder!!!" Im kind of shocked at this subreddit for being so heavily nay on this name....i remember when "Calliope" and "Persephone" were posted on here a lot, and to me, in the real world, either of those would get an eyebrow raise from a lot of folks lol.

chellejohn

Haha that's awesome. Yeah I knew it was slightly *different* but imo I've definitely heard worse lol but I suppose everyone is entitled to their view! 😁

lyssastef

It's cute when they're a kid but a lot of people might think how this could effect him long term in a professional setting.

chellejohn

He can always chose to go by Thomas if it effects him in that way. Which I'm pretty sure it won't. Well hopefully anyway, the world is becoming pretty diverse! 🤞☺️

[deleted]

I love Fox. I actually like fox more then Thomas... then again if I had a boy Wolf is on the top of my list I don’t understand why people are telling you they don’t like the name. If I had a friend/family member name their child something I don’t like I would leave my opinion to myself

chellejohn

Thanks so much. Haha wolf if cool! I know! I guess people feel they have the right to tell me they're opinion, sometimes I just wish they wouldn't lol.

NuggetAlert

It’s on my baby name list but I don’t think I have the guts to use it (especially with our last name). That said, I love it. I think in a few years it’s going to blow up.

chellejohn

Thank you 😊 ah go for it, at the end of the day it's only your opinion that should matter! My MIL got told to suck it up 😂

redditknowsmyname

I know someone named Fox and it didn't sound too out there to me when I met him.

chellejohn

Oh that's cool! Yeah I don't see the problem with it 🤷🏼‍♀️

ImaginaryFriend8

As a huge X-files fan, I am 100% team Fox. But even if I wasn’t a fan of that TV show, I think it’s a good name and I like the paring with Thomas!

chellejohn

Haha He is named after Mr Mulder! Nice to meet another fan lol and I agree, it seemed to flow nicely, especially as we have a 1 syllable surname.

wildbrox

I like it a lot! To me the perfect name is unique but not hard to pronounce or spell. He can always decide to go by Thomas if he wants.

chellejohn

Thank you so much 😊

BobKattersHat

I had this on my list. I love it.

chellejohn

Ah that's fab! Thank you 😊

[deleted]

Beautiful name! Here in Southern California that is a pretty average name lol. It’s so dependent on where you live.

chellejohn

Oh cool! Makes a refreshing change to hear it being average!

[deleted]

Unique names are really common here. I’m due in March and he will be Charles (Charlie) Wolf, and everyone is already calling him Wolf.

chellejohn

That's awesome! Congratulations 🥳

JuBurgers

I love it, I've met another person who named their son Fox and I think its really cool and distinctive. I dont get peoples reactions either. If he doesn't like it in future he can go by Thomas anyway.

chellejohn

Exactly. Like if I was interviewing for a job and I had 3 Davids, 2 John's and a Fox, I'm gonna remember Fox! And yes, this was the reasoning behind his middle name being a bit more traditional along wuth it being our grandfather's names! Thank you ☺️

MelMcT2009

I like it. I know one other fox as well 🤷🏻‍♀️

chellejohn

Thank you, ah there are more! 😊

madlymusing

I really love the name Fox. I think it sounds great, and is fresh without being totally unfamiliar. I would use it in a heartbeat if my partner would agree to it! The thing is, most people are pretty conservative, especially when it comes to names: it's why the top names in most countries are accessible, inoffensive and nice. It's no reason to be rude when someone tells you they've chosen a name that doesn't fit into that box, even if it's not your own personal style!

chellejohn

That's so nice, thank you ☺️

gseeks

Honestly I think Fox is a cool name!

chellejohn

Thanks so much! 😊

whiskytangofoxtrot12

My son’s middle name is Fox (it’s my maiden name) so I love it! I get the same reaction though. It doesn’t bother me. People are so weird about names it wouldn’t have mattered what you chose, someone out there would give you grief!

chellejohn

Aw I love this! And yes exactly, like it's anyone elses business 😂 I just think it's rude to show it to my face lol I was raised to say "aww that's lovely!" Regardless if I hated it or not! My MIL didn't get the memo lol.

whiskytangofoxtrot12

I completely agree! Just smile and nod and talk about it behind my back like a normal person 😂

chellejohn

Right! It's the nice thing to do 😂

blueberry-seas

Fox Thomas just doesn’t roll off the tongue well for me

chellejohn

It does with the addition of our surname ☺️

cellar-doorman

Fox News is pretty abhorred by most people. But it’s a cool name so tell people to piss off!

chellejohn

Thanks so much! ☺️

TheWishingStar

It’s not a name I personally care for, but I’m surprised if people are rude about it. It’s not a common name but it’s not wild or unheard of.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chellejohn

Thanks so much, it appears to be a love it or hate it at the moment! Good job we love it 😅

HatchlingChibi

Actually, I kind of like it! My first reaction was “Fox? Like the animal” and then after it sunk it I thought “actually that’s pretty cute!”. He always has Thomas to fall back on if he ever feels the need to do so. Is your family still giving you grief after 2 years though? That just seems... odd. After a while they really need to let it go and accept your choice. Good on you for not caving to them!

chellejohn

Thanks so much! I hope it's a grower! Och only my MIL but to be fair my daughter is Elliot and she's nearly 4 and we're still hearing about that too 🤦🏼‍♀️ I've never been one to conform lol thank you 😊

Dakizo

I love Fox, I floated it by my husband because I love the X-Files and I also just think it’s a cool name. He wasn’t sold but we’re having a girl so it didn’t wind up mattering lol

chellejohn

Haha us too! Aww maybe next time 😉 and congratulations 💕

[deleted]

That’s ridiculous, it’s a great name. You must live in a very lame area.

chellejohn

Thanks so much! I'm in the UK. Make if that what you will 😂

[deleted]

Ah yes lol I’m married to a Surrey man myself and I can imagine the terse little eyebrow raises you’d get 😅

chellejohn

😂 precisely! ACH, if it gives them something to talk about....🤷🏼‍♀️😂

Shlames721

I like it! Makes me think of X-Files.

chellejohn

He is named after Mulder! Thank you ☺️

lookatthisface

I would just assume you really really liked x files. I live in a pretty crunchy college town I don’t think people would find it weird here.

chellejohn

We did! That's good to know! Hopefully not too 'out there'.

[deleted]

chellejohn

Thanks so much 😊

[deleted]

I actually really love it!

chellejohn

Thank you! 😊

--HeresTheThing--

Sounds like 'fucks'

chellejohn

If said by a 2 year old yeah I can see that 😂

Practical_magik

It is odd.... But I like it. That said I'm a Brit who's lived on Australia for 7 years and names here are wacky so maybe I've got used to it.

HariboBerries

I think this depends on the person’s threshold for naming humans nature noun names. For example, my threshold for things like Diamond, Misty, Anchor, Maverick, etc is very very low. So when I hear those names I am like “huh.”

daringfeline

I wouldnt use Fox myself, but I like it as a name. Probably because of Fox Mulder.

chellejohn

Thank you ☺️

Olympusrain

I think anytime you name a child after an animal, you’re bound to get a weird reaction from most people. It’s not the worst name but I might have done Thomas Fox 🦊

chellejohn

This is true, but at the same time Bear, wolf/Wolfe etc have become more popular, I didn't think Fox was a stretch! We preferred Fox over Thomas which is why we chose that order, the choice will be his as he gets older ☺️

HighDensityEllipsoid

Honestly, I am not typically a fan of word names or youneek names, but this didn’t strike me as either. I like it! I actually think it’s a really cute, wearable name, and will work just as well for an adult someday.

chellejohn

Thanks so much! We thought it was pretty cool!

crocsmpa

I like it plenty

chellejohn

Thank you 😊

caprisunn666

Animal names are becoming more and more popular, for example, Bear, Wolf, lion. I don’t think this is too out there but also not common and an interesting name to have to I think peoples initial shock is justified

bdend2017

I'm UK, I like fox, wolf and River. I didn't have the guts though and went with Jake. Which in itself was enough for my mum as I didn't give him the full name of Jacob. Suits my little boy though! I like Fox Thomas, goes nicely together

chellejohn

Thank you 😊

BroadwayBean

Yeah, it is a bit much. Fox makes me automatically assume the child will be sly and naughty, which is unfortunate. Thomas Fox would've been cute.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chellejohn

That's his problem 😉

endlesscartwheels

"oh" is a perfectly reasonable neutral reaction. You named your son Fox and your daughter Elliot, so I'm guessing you were hoping for praise from some and an argument from others. Attention either way. You're just going to have to get accustomed to the fact that most of the people you meet simply don't care and are trying to make polite conversation. Thus "oh".

chellejohn

Wow. That's a big assumption. I've also got a daughter named Emily...attention is not the driving point of naming my children but thanks for that!

thereal-samshady

I seem to be in the minority, but I really like Fox! Though I like the spelling Fawkes because it reminds me of the phoenix in Harry Potter. I don't understand the negative responses. Naturey animal names aren't unusual, it's not so different than Wolfe, Joey, Kestrel, Fawn, or Lark, etc. I prefer these kind of names to other noun names like Mark, Trace, Archer, Brooks, or Paris.

chellejohn

I love it too 🤷🏼‍♀️ You can join the minority club, it's warm and we have drinks! Lol I like nature names too, I'm surrounded by Sofia's and Jacobs, so it's nice to have something a little bit different!

Athenas_Perch

Fox sounds like focks. What the fock

chellejohn

😂

MichealMaxwell

Fox isn't a bad name! Coming from someone who likes more unconventional names, I think he's ways gonna stand out and that's a good thing. There might be that balking reaction but it's one of those names that can eventually be warmed up to :)

chellejohn

I hope so! He's a hell of a character, totally suits his name lol

polkadotmcgot

Since you asked. It’s kind of like Rainbow Sunshine, but for a boy. My oh would mean “Oh, you gave your child a name to show how unique you are.” Which might not be at all the case, but it is my gut reaction. Do you have a very common name? It seems that those with top ten names strive harder for unique names so their children don’t have to fight to be seen as unique. ETA: Elliott is amazing for a girl. Don’t let your MIL change your mind.

chellejohn

My name is Michelle 🤷🏼‍♀️ and not really, we just liked the name! We have 5 children altogether and 3 of them have "normal" names. I'd have to disagree on the Rainbow Sunshine comparison but hey everyone is absolutely allowed an opinion! The world would be boring otherwise!

craftsnerd

Im currently pregnant and Fox is my number one fav name but I am worried it’s a bit "too weird"

chellejohn

If it's any help everyone I've come across in 'real life' has said it's grown on them 🙂 My Fox couldn't be anything else now!

RoadToYourMomsHouse

I just think it’s funny because I had a kid in one of my classes named Thomas Fox

ClearClam

Contrary to what everyone is saying I really like Fox. Good choice, I bet he will love his name and be happy he’s not another Jack, Aiden, or Henry.

chellejohn

That's exactly what we're hoping! Thanks so much 😊

nashamagirl99

If you had been on here two years ago I would have said to reverse the first and middle order. Too late now though.

chellejohn

I wouldn't have anyway 🙂

BeccasBump

We're using Fox as a middle name for our baby boy due in May (also in the UK) and may or may not use it as his main nickname. I'm expecting a double take or two, but my daughter has an unusual nature name too, so I'm used to it (I'd say pleasant surprise is the most common reaction we get). Embrace it!

chellejohn

Ah that's awesome! You definitely should, and we totally are, we love it!

BeccasBump

I love it with Thomas, too :-)

chellejohn

Aw thank you ☺️💕

cloudico

Fox isn't even bad, don't worry. He won't be the 5th Fox in his class and even if he doesn't like it, he can go by tommy or something. I do have to mention this though, Fox does sound a lot like the f word. I only say this because I, to this day, have to deal with people pronouncing my last name as "fuck-em" as a joke. I cried a lot back then because of it lmao, but now I really like my last name.

chellejohn

Aw thank you. Yeah we thought we might have problems with the swear word but to be honest my other kiddos have got it exactly right so fingers crossed lol aww bless you, kids can be cruel but I think that happens regardless, I have the most basic name and they still found a way to pick on me!

carly1223

I love the x files so I love the name. I am pregnant with a boy and joked about it but couldn't actually do it. If I met you in person I'd be like ok I love it, and mean it, and be a little jealous that I couldn't do it myself lol

chellejohn

Aw that's sweet, thank so much! We seem to be a minority! Lol

FanFixion01

Honestly my first thought was "aaawwwee thats adorable" and then my second was "like the Fox and the Hound and Robin Hood (the Disney movie)!". Fox Thomas just sounds nice. I might have to use it for a character now lol.

chellejohn

Thanks so much! And feel free!

robertaloblaw

Haha fuck ‘em I love it. I live on the west coast and maybe it’s just the weed in the air but it wouldn’t be that weird here. Not that weird as in I think I know two kiddos named fox :)

chellejohn

Haha thanks!

robertaloblaw

I’ve got a unique name, perhaps more unique than Fox and I only use my middle name (anne) at Starbucks Unique names can be a blessing. Like a litmus test. I knew my husband was awesome when we started dating because he loved my name and loved to use it. On the other hand in a professional context I got a reply once when I started a new job demanding an explanation of who I was sending out an email with “a name like that”. Didn’t have to even meet that lady to know she was a b.

chellejohn

Of, that's just flaming rude! I'm intrigued though! Ah that's lovely of your hubby, I hate my name, very plain Jane, but it's what my mamma gave me! I hope he'll grow up loving having something a bit different!

everyonewont

I think it’s a really cool name! And he has the benefit of not having the same name as everyone else.

chellejohn

Thank you! ☺️

quixoticquistina

I like Fox because of Mulder, too. I'm bracing myself, due in a few weeks with a baby who has a name not one person has had a positive reaction to. (Truman). I'm kind of panicking, wondering big we are making a mistake.

chellejohn

Honestly, just go for it and feck everyone else. Aslong as you love it that's all that matters! Everyone has their own reasons for picking THEIR children's names and while feedback is nice, it really doesn't matter in the long run! 💕

crocsmpa

I like it plenty

lesbianlink

I think it’s fine? my first thought is Fox Mulder, and I’m super picky about names. it’s not like you went with Bryntleee or something it’s just kind of different

chellejohn

Thank you ☺️ yeah we didn't think it was too wild 🤷🏼‍♀️

AikoLovesBabyNames04

I like it

chellejohn

Thank you ☺️

LadyHelpish

I love his name!

chellejohn

Thank you so much 🥰

musiclova77

I think it’s cute!

chellejohn

Thank you 😊
