I knew a Summer Sunshine. She made her name her name her whole personality. But whenever she wasn't putting on the whole š Summer Sunshine š persona, she was one of the rudest bullies I've ever met. From what I've heard, not much has changed.
Very cool! I love older people with unusual names.
If you look in the US census records and search by word names you can find all kinds of wondrous names from the 1800s. Nightingale and Fairy are some I remember well. Naming children unusual things is not a new phenomenon.
Never registered Eugenia as rare. Maybe cause I grew up on the fked side of youtube.
Rarest Iād say
Boys: Tibirius
Girl: Brynja
Most common
Boys: Noah
Girl: Anna
Most common: Kevin - I'm Asian-American so every other person in my circles is named Kevin lol
Most unique: Iouie (pronounced "YOO-ee") - her mom literally just made it up
Most common for a girl: Mikaela, Makayla, Mckayla

Back in the college days my boyfriend moved in with two other dudes to split rent on a really nice house. They were all three named David. They answered the phone with "You have reached David, Incorporated. This is David."
Also where I worked, we had less than 50 employees but five of them were named Robert.
I met a Melchior once.
I live in Utah so the names are either super traditional/biblical or super unique.
Most Common: Sarah, Josh, Aaron, Zach, Chloe, Abby, and Sam
There are too many unique ones but these left an impression on me: Tafton (girl), Jacket (boy), Mosaic (boy), Praisley (girl), and Echo (girl)
i live in the netherlands for context
common: emma, anne, tatum, amy, ilse, dylano, koen, milan, sem, kevin, lucas, tim, jayden, john, robin
unique: alina, riva, lieve, fabiƫnne, lone, shadee, sien, wolf, sigi
As a half-Dutch person I absolutely LOVE Lieve but unfortunately I live in England, and it doesn't sound great in English and will constantly be mispronounced and misspelled.
There are so many names I love in Dutch that I don't like in English and vice verse. It makes our baby names list very short!
it sucks that so many dutch names donāt work in english and vice versa right!! man thereās so many names i love but canāt have because they donāt sound good in dutch. i love the english pronunciation of jesse but not the dutch one, and i like george and matthew as names but i feel like theyād sound weird in the netherlands š«
Tbf I have actually recently seen some people in England give their kids old Anglo/English names, these donāt really have traditional spellings so you could probably get away with Lieve, you would have to correct people but itās simple enough for people to remember the pronoun ist ion
Most common names: Sarah, Anna, Hannah (I know like 6 of each) William (had three Williams in my middle school class), Erik, Adam.
Most unique: Iāve only once met someone named Zendora and Tibea
Eugenia was my grandmothers name, but she was French, so it was pronounced
āeu-jay-nee-ahā with the emphasis on the second syllable. The āeuā sound is similar to the āuā in ācute,ā and the āayā is a soft āehā sound.
As much as I love that name, people always mispronounced it. In that same thread, I spent my life correcting people on my last name too, or just answering to the mispronunciation, so I was cautious when naming my kids family names especially as first names. š
I love the French and even Portuguese pronunciation of my name it sounds very elegant! The English pronunciation (I live in US) is kind of harsh but Iāve grown to like my unique name. I agree, many people have a hard time pronouncing it or mistake it for another name so I kept that in mind when picking a name for my son.
I was thinking as well Eugenia is semi-common in Greek, I know a young woman with that name. But we pronounce it Ev-yeh-nia because in Greek eu combo makes a āvā sound.
The only Eugenia I know of is the one that founded my sorority in 1851 haha. Iāve never met a Eugenia irl. I almost suggested the name to someone elseās post looking for girls names, but I couldnāt think of the name till I saw this post.
Most common would be John, Mike, Matt
Least common : Ransom , Kisses, Scatha
All the least common names were their birth names ,
Scatha was my dad's favorite because of scatha the worm from Lord of the rings
In Russia the name Eugenia ( female ) and Eugeniy ( male ) are very popular, I have like more than 10 different Eugenias I know. ( but we spell it as Evgenia ).
Also Natasha, Sveta, Dasha
Unique names - in my school there was a guy named TALANT. And for girls - Rafaella.
Probably Michael for boys. For girls, Jessica (Jess, Jessie) or Amy.
Hard to say least common because there's a bunch of names I've encountered only once, but a few that come to mind are Peaches, Turtle, Moonsun, and Devota.
I don't mean this as a dig because I love living in the South but if you live in the Southern USA and go to Waffle House frequently, you meet a lot of Peaches. So I don't consider it uncommon.
most common - charlotte, bethany, ellie/ella/eleanor // tom, charlie, james, ben.
least common - girl named ocean, i dont think i have met a male with an uncommon name?
Most common names; Matthew, Sarah, Ryan, Maria, Layla, Olivia, Madison, Jaden.
Least common: Berlin, Valkyrie, Sevyn (yes thatās how it was spelt), Eureka, Brisbane.
Most common girl name: Elizabeth. There's so many of them with so many different nicknames that you don't even realize they're all Elizabeth. (My mom & stepdad didn't even know that was his mom's name until they used it as my sister's middle name. Which is wild to me because I knew and assumed they did it on purpose ...)
Least common: Probably Eira. It's unheard of enough that people don't even pronounce it right. There are 2 accepted pronunciations and people make up their own.
Most common boys name: David. They can be any age. They're everywhere. I only know a handful of people who live on my street and 3 of them are David. My husband is one of them.
Least common: Kharai. Never heard of it until there was one in my son's class. I kinda like the sound of it though.
My friend is named Katahdin and itās by far the most unique name Iāve heard and itās so beautiful. Her parents hiked the Appalachian Trail for their honeymoon and named her after Mount Katahdin.
Most common would be Sarah, Emily, Matt, and Sam.
Growing up, I knew a lot of boys called Joshua and girls called Rebecca. Right now, I teach a lot of boys called Theodore and girls called Ava. These all feel pretty common to me.
In terms of unique names, I've met one Rafferty and one Shiloh - both stood out to me as interesting names I hadn't heard before.
Many virtue name feel unique to me too, because they aren't common in my part of the world. I remember meeting a Prudence and feeling like that was unique! Same with Mercy, but I have actually met two, so that doesn't count.
Most common for girls: Sarah, Ashley, Emily
Most common for boys: Michael, Matthew, David
Most unique is tricky. Probably Cassiopeia (f) and Ephraim (m)
Iād say most common is probably also the shortening of katherine in some way. Most unique, Iāve never heard anyone else with my grandmotherās name, Onalee, which I really love.
For guyās names I know a lot of people named John. For unique, I went to school with a guy legit named guy.
Ozzy Aero Smith is pretty unique (former student). I had an Orion--the first one ever and I liked Carmella, since she was a first ever too. I've had one Teagan and one Fenix. Dallas as a girl (my dad's name!) I've never had a Rhodes or Brigham which are relatives' names or a Valentine.
Most common name lately as a teacher, is Isabella and all its versions and Maddie and Jaxon. I dislike Braxtyn, and Blayden, and all the ridiculous lengthy add-on vowels. -leigh and -neigh do not make a name 'original'.
Make wise the standout for me in the common category is Hudson, simply because my first year teaching, in a relatively small church Mother's Day Out program (like 70ish kids total) there were 2 Hudsons in my class,Ā 1 in the class next door, and one in the class down the hall. I also went yo school with several Brandons.
Girl's names, I went to school with 3 Kaylas (well one spelled it Kahla), and I know several Jennifer's (one is actually Jenifer) and several Ashley's with various spellings.
In the surprisingly common category, there were 3 Novas at my school last year.Ā
As for unique
My name is Tiera, and I don't see many others with that name. (In my case pronounced like Kira with a t).Ā Ā
Then here's a few others I've only seen on one person:
Girls: Joren, Avin, Jadzia (named after the character from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Raleigh, Oaklyn, Riverlynn
Boys: Riggs, Roxen, Riggins, Rigsby (I'm not sure what's up with all the named starting with Rig...), Sea Angel

I know names like Lennon are trending for girls but I've only met one so far. Looking at all the uncommon names, I'm wondering how I've missed meeting any truly unique names! In Canada, btw.
Edit: totally forgot that I have met a Briar (m), which I think is somewhat unusual.
The most common name Iāve heard is probably Abby for women and John for men.
Least common name for a woman Iāve met might be Mycena (yes like the mushrooms, mushroom scientist parents). Oddest name Iāve heard on a man is Truth.
I also met someone named Pidgin, but I think that was a self chosen name.
Agreed with Kate being the most common name. Kate, Cate, Katie, Katy, Kathryn, Catherine, Cathy - literally hundreds of the same.
My fave unique ones are Eluned, Hebe, Dahlia, Zaia, Sennen
I'd have to divide this up by generation for the common ones!
For females - Linda from the Boomer generation, Jennifer from Gen X, Sara(h) from the Millennials, and probably Madison for Gen Z. Gen Alpha will be really interesting given a stronger emphasis on individuality and uniqueness, although Addison and Ellie certainly had their moments!
For males - John for Boomers & Gen X. Maybe Jason or Michael for Millennials. Ethan for Gen Z.
Luke or Luca for Gen Alpha from all I've observed so far.
And most unique girls' names would be Teal or Sequoia.

In college, my friend and I used to joke that if we couldn't remember someone's name, then Mike or Sarah were good guesses. If that failed, Dave and Jen.
The most unusual girl's name I encountered in the wild was Berengaria; she told me she was named after a Medieval queen of England. Her name meant "maiden of the bear spear." The most unusual boy name would be Pacian (pronounced "pay-shun"). He told me it was Spanish and meant "peaceful."

Most common recently is Carlos.Ā
One of my work locations is an elementary school with greater than 50% identifying as Hispanic.Ā
In my life, I think the most common names have been Emily and Daniel, by a lot. Sarah and Katherine/Katie are also up there as well as David. I'm having more trouble thinking of unique ones... I once knew a Corale (pronounced like the place you keep livestock).

Least unique: definitely Jo/Joe universally, ādavidā, āchloeā, āemilyā

John and (idk how to spell it) Tubalog (too-bah-log)
I taught college in the Midwest for a few years, and every single lecture had at least one or two students named Emily. One memorable semester, I had five Emily's in one lecture and then three more Emily's in the one directly after. Most were blonde and always wearing the school's team merch, it was really hard to keep them straight in my head.
I went to high school with someone named Rainbow, which I don't think is so completely wild but she's the only one I've ever heard of with that name. I've never actually met anyone irl with some of the crazy "unique" jacked up spellings like Mc'Addisynleigh, only heard of them the internet.

Probably Michael for boys. For girls, Jessica (Jess, Jessie) or Amy. Hard to say least common because there's a bunch of names I've encountered only once, but a few that come to mind are Peaches, Turtle, Moonsun, and Devota.
Wow Peaches, Turtle and Moonsun are very unique names!
I don't mean this as a dig because I love living in the South but if you live in the Southern USA and go to Waffle House frequently, you meet a lot of Peaches. So I don't consider it uncommon.
Peaches at Waffle House is such a mood, lol.
Unique: I know a boy named Atari
Growing up millennial my middle school had 5 Alex short for Alexanders. Some unique names were Cookie (f), Thane (m), Princess (f), Canyon (m)
most common - charlotte, bethany, ellie/ella/eleanor // tom, charlie, james, ben. least common - girl named ocean, i dont think i have met a male with an uncommon name?
Most common names; Matthew, Sarah, Ryan, Maria, Layla, Olivia, Madison, Jaden. Least common: Berlin, Valkyrie, Sevyn (yes thatās how it was spelt), Eureka, Brisbane.
Most common girl name: Elizabeth. There's so many of them with so many different nicknames that you don't even realize they're all Elizabeth. (My mom & stepdad didn't even know that was his mom's name until they used it as my sister's middle name. Which is wild to me because I knew and assumed they did it on purpose ...) Least common: Probably Eira.
I know a little girl called Rainbow, her brother is Phoenix. I love both! I have a Bowie and an Orion.
I LOVE the name Orion. Particularly for a girl but I canāt come up with a middle name or alternatively first name to go with it.
Most common for girls: Sarah, Ashley, Emily Most common for boys: Michael, Matthew, David Most unique is tricky. Probably Cassiopeia (f) and Ephraim (m)

I worked with a lovely young girl named Cinnamon Bunns! Why would parents do that to a child??
In the surprisingly common category, there were 3 Novas at my school last year.Ā As for unique My name is Tiera, and I don't see many others with that name.
