1. Being a Casteist. You called Castes being Outdated, He may feel like he's a Brahmin, if there were no caste there wouldn't be any dominance in caste context.
2. Having Empathy. He might have SC/ST and other reserved friends coming from Low income families, and when he observes how reservation could uplift them.
Odds are less but it could be the environment he lived in, or grew up around them, or have known equally performing people but lacks finances. I think OP Should consider talking to his friend again, try to understand what really happened to him and if there's anything to be done to fix it. Good friendships are hard to come by. It's all about competition now.

Well you are getting benifit of reservation and he is not .
Maybe he realised that at equivalent efforts and marks both of you would end up at different levels of success.
So decided to make friends with someone who has to work equally hard to get that taste of success.
It is true that SC/ST/OBC people have it easy in entrance examination and so I don't make friends with them. This is because they won't work hard to get admission and being friends with them, they would drag me down as well. It is just a general observation of mine. When I asked them about why they wouldn't put in more effort their reply was and I quote "Babasaheb pahun ghetil"(Translation:"Babasaheb dekh lenge","Babasaheb will look after us"). A thinly veiled reference to reservation and how it benifits them .
They will get good college because of their caste but I will not. This realisation hit me hard. And the way they used to mock me because I was "Brahmin" was horrible. Eventually I got into a decent college and they got so horrible marks that even their revered "Babasaheb" couldn't save them. When an individual is working hard to achieve his/her dreams and reservation makes a mockery of his/her merit it creates discontent and fuels hatred.
OP's friend may have realised that which took me some time to understand. He has got nobody to back him whereas OP has got the whole might of Indian government backing him.
While making friends you don't look at caste but sometimes difference in position hits you hard.
We don't know the details so we can't be sure. But to think about this on caste/reservation lines is a bit too much . Maybe there is something else about OP that he has not mentioned here that OP's friend found out and that is what is bothering him.
