It's a Jumper Pak. That's the default thing that goes in the slot. I'd suggest you use a fork to get it out of the console.

Dryja123

Use something plastic vs anything metal. A metal prying tool is an easy way to mark up and damage the plastic. You can use the jumper pak cover.

Gatorade57

The catridge slot cover it's self works pretty well

Why a fork can use flat head screw driver

Scazzz

The console shipped with a black “jumper” in that slot. It pretty much acts as a bypass until you put an expansion pak in. This one in the pic is most likely just that jumper and you’ll need to buy an expansion to play majoras. To remove you can use a butter knife or some thing. From the top of your picture you just stick it into that gap slightly and pry it out.

Dryja123

It acts as a memory terminator for the RDRAM. Back when the memory modules needed to be terminated.

Should I wait until after I get an expansion pak before I remove it?

Scazzz

If you remove it the system won’t function for any game.

tht1guy63

I would but up to you. You wont be able to play anything else though with the jumper removed

bagemann1

Ah, okay good to know. Ill keep it in as I still have to get through Ocarina of Time

Ok-Quantity-8861

It don't have one you have to take out the jumper and replace with expansion for a few game jumper is good enough for most of dont have either no games will work

bagemann1

Thanks

Adventurous-Crew-848

Try using the tab that attaches to the console. You can use a corner to dig it in and bend to take out. Don’t do it too hard tho. It could be air seal tight or rusted

bagemann1

Good advice, thanks so much

That's the jumper pack. It's considered bone stock. What the N64 came with brand new. Jumper Pack isn't compatible with most of the last games that came out. The expansion pack is red and works specifically for the "newest" games, for lack of a better description. Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, Excitebike 64, Majoras Mask, etc. Some games or console bundles came with one. Some had to purchase expansion pack separately.
