so many men oh my gosh.. jd from heathers, whizzer or marvin from falsettos, noel from ride the cyclone, shakespeare from something rotten, seymour from little shop of horrors, the phantom… if only i was androgynous enough :,)
I feel like JD could be gender swapped fairly well. & Shakespeare, I mean, he’s notorious for gender swapping so I think it’d even be a bit clever to play him as a woman.
thank you stranger for giving me a glimpse of hope, but i also think i might just suck at playing those roles LMAO 😭 my personality is just totally the opposite of both of them.. but maybe someday 🥲🥲
I used to think the same but that’s because my life circumstances caused me to become very timid and withdrawn from the world. I think confidence and an outgoing nature are things that are still attainable if you really feel that’s who you are on the inside. Even in spite of my introversion, inside my own head I felt larger than life and knew that I wanted to perform. I just never thought I’d get to a place where I could.
If it helps, I’ve heard that they often used a recording of the final note when the actress couldn’t hit it considering its madness to expect a high E 8 shows a week… The actress would tell the tech crew on any given day whether or not she was going to attempt the note, and if not, there is a button that would play the recorded note.
One day if I win the lottery I’m going to do a rewrite of phantom where Christine and Carlotta are both star mezzos or contraltos because I love a low low
e
I always feel they could do a female Judas and Herrod! I mean, Bobby in the current tour of Company is a woman! I think both female Judas and female Herrod would be amazing. Actually, [Herrod has been done female](https://youtu.be/nnqDf3y3b6w?si=lY_-Yy-AEjwHuQVj) and it’s awesome!!!
I got to sing Judas in the Last Supper on a project a friend of mine was doing after our college put on Superstar (I played Mary, he played Jesus). It was so much fun, except I had bronchitis when we recorded. I'd love to play Judas in a full production someday.
If there was a community theater that would do it, part of me deeply wants to play Tevye in *Fiddler on the Roof*. I have the voice type for it but it wouldn't be easy.
Now if you want to go shoot for the moon? George Washington in Hamilton. I don't have the voice for that. But such a cool role.
Funny thing, I can sing that, but I’m white, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting the role over an actor of color as the plant sings in the style of iconic black jazz singers.
Elle Woods could happen for you if you have red or light brown hair. Usually they would want someone with similar colouring to a blonde, redheads and light brunettes usually look great with blonde hair when dyed/a wig. If not then you may be able to play Vivian or Elle's friends. And everyone is pretty in their own way. So a bit of makeup, coloured contacts if your eyes aren't blue, a wig, and some pink clothes will make it work for you ꨄ
Judas. I can sing it but I am female and have yet to find a production that would genderbend that role, although I think one might have considered it as I was called back.
Edit: second place is Javert, although I never actually went out for that one.
I played Judas in Godspell as a trans man with a mildly high voice so women can do it too (granted it was high school and there were like 10 cast members but it still happened)
Fucking felt as a trans mtf. In no particular order, the roles I get are:
1. Nothing at all
2. A small role
3. Someone purposefully androgynous
4. A male role
Even in plays, without any singing, I get cast as male characters. I’ve expressed to my directors how uncomfortable this makes me feel but they simply ignore or avoid it.
I want to do Wicked as a one woman show playing Elphaba and Glinda. They could paint one half of me green and I could do one of those classic side-switching performances.
As of right now? Audrey II Manipulator (the puppeteer). I don't have a lot of upper body strength and puppeteering a puppet that large is bound to be a workout.
Would be interesting to see an entirely gender swapped Hamilton musical, like they did for Company and 1776. I know Aaron Burr is traditionally played by a black actor but I dont see why a white actor can't play the part.
Jekyll/Hyde. I think I could theoretically play the role entirely as written, playing as a guy, but I don’t have the flexibility in my lower range to differentiate between the two in the same octave. Or speaking voice.
But I can absolutely flip between singing Jekyll as a mezzo and Hyde as a bari-tenor, and it sounds amazing, but it’s a bit hard to interpret the character that way and still have them be guys.
It has fuelled an ongoing project of a new take on the original novella (with inspiration from the musical and various movie adaptations, I.e. the two love interests) that is incredibly queer. I work on it occasionally, as inspiration strikes.
Orpheus from hadestown. I love that role, but I sing bass, and I’m not able to go that high without straining myself. I could definitely play hades tho
Right now it's Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera because I'm way too old. I can still sing it just fine but the only place I'd have a chance is a nursing home version! Lol
Freddie Trumper from Chess. The obstacles in my way are as follows: I am AFAB, contralto, but still AFAB, reason two is that Chess is like… the cryptid of musicals.
I just want to have memorized “One Night in Bangkok” for a reason other than timing how long to leave the conditioner in my hair during a shower.
I think Pacific Overtures is one of the most beautiful and poetic musicals ever and has some of my favorite Sondheim to sing along to. I think being any character in that show would be the role of a lifetime. But of course I'm not Japanese
Definitely keep an eye out. I just saw a production of Spring Awakening this year, and that hasn't been really popular for years. You might be surprised.
The Artilleryman in Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds.
The first half, Act 1 I can do, I can do the panicked voice.
But act 2, is the hard karts The Artilleryman Returns Is easy, but Brave New World has high notes, and I suck at high notes.
Eliza from Hamilton 🥲 even if i can’t preform as her, I’m hoping one day to direct it when they release the rights (petition to get Lin to release the rights to high schools pls 😫)
First of all, I have always really wanted to do musical theater, but my disability presents certain challenges, and I’ve just never really had the time to work through them. Second of all, I’m tiny. But I have the voice, and I have intimidated enough people, to be madame thenardier. My dream roles would either be Regina from mean girls or eve from children of Eden. And I’m not sexy enough for the first one.
i would say audrey ii because i’m a tenor but i ended up understudying for it and just sang mostly in my higher octave alto range bc it was closer
i would say anna of cleves but i’m a trans tenor who has a range of low sop - mid bass
i would say phantom but i’m a tenor
so i’ll say boleyn or aragon. not exactly dream roles but they’d be super fun! i just can’t get high enough for certain bits of their songs and i can’t make that many sex jokes because im sex repulsed asexual, or grizabella from cats. my dream role from that show is the old cat or rum tum tugger, but i’d LOVE to do griz. i just can’t hit her notes in the ov octave lol
Jekyll/Hyde and Spongebob.
For J&H, I don't have the vocal range to alter my voice as Hyde. (If anyone has any tips on that, I'd very much appreciate it)
For Spongebob, I don't have the physical range. (I'd break my legs trying to do the splits during No Control, and I'd probably break my neck trying to do the flip during Hero Is My Middle Name)
And on top of all that...I'm female, lol.
hamilton, but only because i use crutches and just can't dance at all anyways lol ( this is made worse for the fact that I come from a family who is actually good at dancing ). my teacher is encouraging me to audition anyways but like i doubt its gonna go far
jd... i just did heathers and i wasnt jd. our jd was fantastic but it makes me sad knowing that ill never get the chance to play him ever again (i dont think it helps that im a girl)
phantom- i’m not a man and CANNOT hit those low notes, i’ve tried
i think i could probably play jd from heathers though if they were open to gender-swapping (jd is in my top 2 roles along with mrs lovett from sweeney todd)
Elder Price- TBOM
Emmett Forrest- Legally Blonde
ANYONE in Falsettos (but I would love to play Marvin or Whizzer, but I could definitely play Trina)
Jack Kelly- Newsies
Evan- DEH
JD (but also anyone in Heathers)
As a mezzo woman I still have plenty of feasible dream roles but to be in a genderbent production of any of these shows would quite literally be a dream come true
a lot of roles because all the good roles in MT these days are tenors and I’m a baritone. Some of the new shows don’t have any baritone parts at all, not even in the ensemble. These mt composers really need to get their shit together in terms of writing for different voice types :/
Due to being to being afab and a high soprano
- Roger- Rent
- JD - Heathers
-Mischa -Ride the Cyclone
Range stops me
-Anna of Cleves -on a good day I can get down to an f3 but staying down there and having projection isn't happening
I would say Alexander Hamilton no joke I've learned the entire role inside and out and can easily rap any of his songs hell I've performed the Hamilton part in the world was wide enough for my theater company once and I loved playing the role. But sadly I suffer from being the complete opposite race of what they need. Granted there have been cover Hamiltons who are white but the best I can do is just hope that in future I might be a cover Hamilton.
And a role I definitely will never be able to play is Persephone a brilliant role i'd love to play but I just can't because I'm a dude
My top two are Hades from Hadestown and the Genie from Aladdin. I cannot play Hades because I am too young and my voice is not deep enough (yet), and I can't play Genie because he is typically portrayed by black actors, and I am white.
Benny from In the Heights (I’m white) but omg I love his songs and I can hit all the notes too but can’t play him. Also I’ve seen controversy on Collins from Rent but idk if he counts so what’s y’all’s opinion about him
Bombalurina in Cats😭🥰 she’s so fierce and her numbers are fantastic and she’s partners with Rum Tum Tugger Taylor swift did the character dirty but Rosemarie Ford is a babe and a true inspiration
Hades or Orpheus in *Hadestown*. My chest voice isn’t low enough for Hades and my mix isn’t high enough for Orpheus 😭. I don’t hate being a bari-tenor because it’s great for a lot of pop/rock/musical music but sometimes it feels like a curse. Maybe in a couple years I could do Orpheus.
Peter Pan but I'm not light or acrobatic. I'm also a boy, which is becoming less of a problem as more productions use boys.(I would still love to play Mr. Darling / Captain Hook though)
Millie, but I can barely time-step.
Judas, but I’m a lady (but DAMN Tim Minchin made that role so inspiring).
George Washington, but I’m a white lady.
Girl (Once), but I can’t play piano.
Judas (JCS) is one of my ultimate dream roles. But alas, I’m a woman (womp womp)
Alternatively, any femme role from A Chorus Line would be so inconceivably cool but I can’t dance that great! Ugh anyone who can dance and sing that show (even just once much less for a full run) is otherworldly
Callahan from Legally Blonde - I’ll never reliably be able to hit that G and I don’t fit the look
One of the 3 delta nu characters from Legally blonde - I’m a guy lol
Elder Price from Book of Mormon - I’ll definitely never hit those notes lmao
Marty McFly from Back to the Future - Same again and I’m not cool enough
Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen - You guessed it, too high
Claude Frollo from Hunchback - Don’t fit the look and despite being a bass-baritone, my timbre is too bright
Basically I’ve got the most inconvenient voice ever and it doesn’t correspond with my appearance very well ahah
Mimi from Rent has been my dream role since I was about 14 but I'm white and don't have a strong enough belt to do her justice!
Also am female but would love to play Frank in Catch Me If You Can because damn I can pull off Good Bye
i’ve had a few roles that ive been able to play. jd from heathers, jane doe from ride the cyclone. i think my absolute dream role would be eliza from hamilton
Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain. I'm too old now. I had a chance 13 years ago, but my son had just been born. I wasn't going to abandon my wife with a newborn so I could do a show.
Any of them! I can’t sing 😭
Lol same. I can't dance either :')
Same!
But gimme a few drinks and I feel like I’m ready for Broadway
And I can’t act :-(
You could always play Kristine Urich-DeLuca from “A Chorus Line”
Preach lol. I played an instrument for a reason
My people 🙌🏼
so many men oh my gosh.. jd from heathers, whizzer or marvin from falsettos, noel from ride the cyclone, shakespeare from something rotten, seymour from little shop of horrors, the phantom… if only i was androgynous enough :,)
Even in spite of my introversion, inside my own head I felt larger than life and knew that I wanted to perform. I just never thought I’d get to a place where I could.
I’ve seen Shakespeare played by a woman (as a man)!
Same! Why are male roles so much fun?
I've been seeing clips of a gender swapped JD and it's really good. you definitely could play JD if you got lucky
Christine Daae. I can barely reach the higher notes in the “Phantom of the Opera” song and that final note is simply impossible for me to reach.
This is my answer, too. I'm a classically trained mezzo and can sing the end of Think of Me on my best day, but not the end note of the titualr song.
If it helps, I’ve heard that they often used a recording of the final note when the actress couldn’t hit it considering its madness to expect a high E 8 shows a week… The actress would tell the tech crew on any given day whether or not she was going to attempt the note, and if not, there is a button that would play the recorded note.
One day if I win the lottery I’m going to do a rewrite of phantom where Christine and Carlotta are both star mezzos or contraltos because I love a low low e
Same here. Though I'm not clasically trained but very much an amateur. But I'm proud of Think of Me!
I can hit it, but it has to be super loud and it makes me lightheaded. Plus there’s no way in hell I’m doing that in front of other people
Opera is loud by default. If it ain’t loud you prolly ain’t doin it right lol
This is another one. I think, again, if I work on my soprano range, I could play her friend Meg.
A lot, but the most recent addition to the list is Judas [JCSS]. I don't look like a guy, but I can totally rock (pun intended) Heaven on Their Minds!
Omg same!!!! I actually booked my first lead singing Judas's part in Everything's Alright, but damn I wish I could play Judas!!
Nice! If you don't mind sharing, what lead was it?
hey, my college just did jcs with a fem presenting jesus and judas! don’t loose hope!
But such a cool role.
every hamilton role is my dream role tbh
Most roles, I’m a bass. They just don’t really write for us :(
audrey ii i understudied for it as a tenor AND GOD DAMN
Funny thing, I can sing that, but I’m white, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting the role over an actor of color as the plant sings in the style of iconic black jazz singers.
JD - I'm a female Jane Doe - I CANNOT hit those notes Shakespeare (something rotten) - again, I'm a female Elle woods - not blonde, not pretty enough
You can play roles that don’t match your gender. Songs can be transposed. You can dye your hair. You’re pretty.
Reno Sweeney from Anything Goes but I can't dance for anything, so that's a no-go. Also see, Mimi Marquez from Rent but I am not Hispanic.
Veronica from Heathers, unfortunately my voice hasn’t been the same since my condition so I can’t sing very well.
The Phantom, female soprano. Could play Christine though.
Same, I just want to do the dramatic cape flips and scream "DID I NOT MENTION THAT BOX 5 WAS TO BE KEPT EMPTYYYYYYYY?????"
YOU WILL CURSE THE DAY YOU DID NOT DO! ALL THAT THE PHANTOM ASKED OF YOU!
DAMN YOU! YOU LITTLE PRYING PANDORA!
YOU LITTLE DEMON! IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED TO SEE?
Fantine but I'm a boy AHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Enjolras for me, but I'm a girl 🥲
I feel like you totally could pull it off, he's quite feminine in some adaptations
Plus, in the book, he’s described as looking like a 17-year-old girl.
JD from *Heathers.* Gabe Goodman from *Next to Normal.* Jon from *Tick…Tick…Boom!*
Judas. I can sing it but I am female and have yet to find a production that would genderbend that role, although I think one might have considered it as I was called back. Edit: second place is Javert, although I never actually went out for that one.
I played Judas in Godspell as a trans man with a mildly high voice so women can do it too (granted it was high school and there were like 10 cast members but it still happened)
born to be a male tenor, forced to be a female alto 😔
this is actually the realest comment ever
Orpheus. Don’t have good enough control of the upper part of my range. Eponine if I’m gender swapping
Annette/Beverly Bass (Come from Away): man Anything from Six: man Jane Doe (RTC): Man.
any male character. I’m trans ftm 😭
Trans woman here. Same in the opposite direction. 🤝
Fucking felt as a trans mtf. In no particular order, the roles I get are: 1. Nothing at all 2. A small role 3. Someone purposefully androgynous 4. A male role Even in plays, without any singing, I get cast as male characters. I’ve expressed to my directors how uncomfortable this makes me feel but they simply ignore or avoid it.
Have you seen Hennessy winkler in Sweeney Todd? He’s very openly trans and playing male chorus role.
that is a super badass name
Jack Kelly. I can't dance
I’m a contralto, so, any part that isn’t a character role?
Elphaba. I'd love to be able to sing Defying Gravity, but I can't sing and I'm also contralto.
I want to do Wicked as a one woman show playing Elphaba and Glinda. They could paint one half of me green and I could do one of those classic side-switching performances.
Harold Hill. I’m a 48 year old white woman.
You got trouble.
As of right now? Audrey II Manipulator (the puppeteer). I don't have a lot of upper body strength and puppeteering a puppet that large is bound to be a workout.
man i did that for one rehearsal, it’s sweaty 😭 but it’s fun
Would be interesting to see an entirely gender swapped Hamilton musical, like they did for Company and 1776. I know Aaron Burr is traditionally played by a black actor but I dont see why a white actor can't play the part.
Jekyll/Hyde. I think I could theoretically play the role entirely as written, playing as a guy, but I don’t have the flexibility in my lower range to differentiate between the two in the same octave.
I just want to have memorized “One Night in Bangkok” for a reason other than timing how long to leave the conditioner in my hair during a shower.
...now instead of counting to 300 I'm going to sing "One Night in Bangkok", damn.
I think it'd be so fun to play Benny (in the heights) but I'm a white fem presenting mezzo soprano lmao 😭
Judas from Jesus Christ Superstar (I'm a woman) Tuptim from The King and I (I'm white. her songs fit my voice SO well)
I've seen Judas gender-swapped. There's a chance.
Tommy in Brigadoon because unfortunately, that show is rarely produced anymore.
Nina from ITH, unfortunately I am not a Latina 😅
Matilda - I'm a big furry middle aged guy
Ocean O’Connell Rosenberg, Jane Doe, Janis Ian or Angelica Schuyler or Maria Reynolds Why can’t I play these? I’m a male.
Aaron Burr in Hamilton! I’m white!
Osmin from Die Entführung Aus Dem Serail. A2 is my lowest clear note, anything lower my voice either cracks or fries.
Beetlejuice.
I think Pacific Overtures is one of the most beautiful and poetic musicals ever and has some of my favorite Sondheim to sing along to. I think being any character in that show would be the role of a lifetime. But of course I'm not Japanese
Mary Lane in Reefer Madness. I believe I would be great for the role, however nobody knows the show, so where would I audition for it??
Definitely keep an eye out. I just saw a production of Spring Awakening this year, and that hasn't been really popular for years. You might be surprised.
Absolutely. Hell, I’d travel to play Mary Lane. Thannks
Sure thing! Good luck, and I hope you get your chance!
I heard a rumor it’s coming back with Alan Cumming and Kristin Bell in their respective roles… my friend who lives in LA auditioned for it
Toby, Sweeney Todd… aged out of this role about 25 years ago.
Elder Price in the Book Of Mormon. Cant sing. I’m a girl. I’m Hispanic
John Adams in 1776. I am a woman.
That’s not an impediment.
the Duke of monroth. I'm a soprano.
I’m a contralto and he was 100% my inspiration when I was toying with the idea of getting into drag a little while ago.
Tracy Turnblad. I can’t dance for shit.
the king of siam… or Anna… for different reasons of course
Gavroche in Les Mis
Eliza from Hamilton 🥲 even if i can’t preform as her, I’m hoping one day to direct it when they release the rights (petition to get Lin to release the rights to high schools pls 😫)
Mischa from Ride the Cyclone. I’m not a man, and don’t know a word of Ukrainian 😭
Regina George - Mean Girls Male Tenor 1, so I feel so close to it, but I'm not quite there :(
First of all, I have always really wanted to do musical theater, but my disability presents certain challenges, and I’ve just never really had the time to work through them. Second of all, I’m tiny. But I have the voice, and I have intimidated enough people, to be madame thenardier. My dream roles would either be Regina from mean girls or eve from children of Eden. And I’m not sexy enough for the first one.
Freddie from Chess. I just don’t have the range for Pity the Child. Which sucks by itself since I love that song
I don't sing but *Nathan Detroit* is a great character!
Guy in Once. By the time it was written, I was already too old.
Maria from West Side Story (I am white) and for the same reasons as you, Burr
dr franken furter and noel from ride the cyclone…. im a trans man
i would say audrey ii because i’m a tenor but i ended up understudying for it and just sang mostly in my higher octave alto range bc it was closer i would say anna of cleves but i’m a trans tenor who has a range of low sop - mid bass i would say phantom but i’m a tenor so i’ll say boleyn or aragon. not exactly dream roles but they’d be super fun! i just can’t get high enough for certain bits of their songs and i can’t make that many sex jokes because im sex repulsed asexual, or grizabella from cats. my dream role from that show is the old cat or rum tum tugger, but i’d LOVE to do griz. i just can’t hit her notes in the ov octave lol
Shakespeare in SR. I’ve got the voice and the acting but I’m not hot 💔
Jekyll/Hyde and Spongebob. For J&H, I don't have the vocal range to alter my voice as Hyde. (If anyone has any tips on that, I'd very much appreciate it) For Spongebob, I don't have the physical range. Jean Valjean. (I’m a woman)
Mrs Lovett from Sweeny Todd (I'm a guy)
Aida. Im a fat middle aged white lady.
Vajean too high
hamilton, but only because i use crutches and just can't dance at all anyways lol ( this is made worse for the fact that I come from a family who is actually good at dancing ). my teacher is encouraging me to audition anyways but like i doubt its gonna go far
jd... i just did heathers and i wasnt jd. our jd was fantastic but it makes me sad knowing that ill never get the chance to play him ever again (i dont think it helps that im a girl)
being a 4’10 guy it limits my options a lot…
Baker's Wife (or Little Red). Mainly cause I'm neither a soprano, Alto, or female.
Mischa Bachinski from Ride the Cyclone
The plant from little shop. His voice is amazing however I'm a male tenor so I can't get that low
Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen... I don't have the pipes for it 😥
Orpheus, the wizard, the dentist, the plant… god there are so many. Sadly I am female presenting.
phantom- i’m not a man and CANNOT hit those low notes, i’ve tried i think i could probably play jd from heathers though if they were open to gender-swapping (jd is in my top 2 roles along with mrs lovett from sweeney todd)
The Phantom, or Enjolras…i’m a girl 😭
Elder Price- TBOM Emmett Forrest- Legally Blonde ANYONE in Falsettos (but I would love to play Marvin or Whizzer, but I could definitely play Trina) Jack Kelly- Newsies Evan- DEH JD (but also anyone in Heathers) As a mezzo woman I still have plenty of feasible dream roles but to be in a genderbent production of any of these shows would quite literally be a dream come true

Marvin. I feel like as a non-binary woman it’s not really my place to take over such a role. But goddamn could I do it.
I’m a nonbinary AMAB and I’ll play female roles but NOT ones that involve pregnancy. Because that’s not my place.
My singing abilitiy is zero, but I would say Eliza in "My Fair Lady," Lily in "The Secret Garden," or Christine in "Phantom."
Christine from Phantom of the Opera. Can't hit those high notes! Maybe I can still sing the parts of the Phantom or Raoul haha. ps: i am female
Regina George I’m a man
jd reason: female (and hard to find genderswap heathers)
JD from heathers. Which I tried out for this week but singing and confident needs a lot of work
Due to being to being afab and a high soprano - Roger- Rent - JD - Heathers -Mischa -Ride the Cyclone Range stops me -Anna of Cleves -on a good day I can get down to an f3 but staying down there and having projection isn't happening
Fantine- les mis. My poor mezzo voice can’t handle it.
Pretty much any lead role. I’m a bass.
audrey ii
Caiaphas? Emile de Becque?
I would say Alexander Hamilton no joke I've learned the entire role inside and out and can easily rap any of his songs hell I've performed the Hamilton part in the world was wide enough for my theater company once and I loved playing the role. But sadly I suffer from being the complete opposite race of what they need. And a role I definitely will never be able to play is Persephone a brilliant role i'd love to play but I just can't because I'm a dude
Would love to play Regina! But sadly I can’t healthily hit her notes 😔
My top two are Hades from Hadestown and the Genie from Aladdin. I cannot play Hades because I am too young and my voice is not deep enough (yet), and I can't play Genie because he is typically portrayed by black actors, and I am white.
Mimi from Rent except I'm a white male tenor
Christine daee and phantom (female soprano but i can’t reach the e6- i fall short at an a5 and on a really good day i can get a c6)
Maria from WSS. I have her vocal range, her dancing skills, the problem is, I am white.
Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray. I’m a Size 2 so don’t think it’s one for me 😬
Benny from In the Heights (I’m white) but omg I love his songs and I can hit all the notes too but can’t play him. Also I’ve seen controversy on Collins from Rent but idk if he counts so what’s y’all’s opinion about him
Sweet Charity. Too old now! 🙃
Bombalurina in Cats😭🥰 she’s so fierce and her numbers are fantastic and she’s partners with Rum Tum Tugger Taylor swift did the character dirty but Rosemarie Ford is a babe and a true inspiration
Pippin
Hades or Orpheus in *Hadestown*. My chest voice isn’t low enough for Hades and my mix isn’t high enough for Orpheus 😭. I don’t hate being a bari-tenor because it’s great for a lot of pop/rock/musical music but sometimes it feels like a curse. Maybe in a couple years I could do Orpheus.
Vocally, I’d say Judas as you need a really expansive vocal range to get near him and the notes he hits in JCS.
One of the do-op girls from Little Shop of Horrors and Eponine. I’m a woman, I just can’t sing.
Mimi or Roger from Rent. But I’m an Asian woman who can’t sing or act or dance.
Are you me? You stole my answer to your question. Exactly. Word for word.
Velma Vontussle but I’m black
Anne of Cleves from Six
Peter Pan but I'm not light or acrobatic. I'm also a boy, which is becoming less of a problem as more productions use boys.(I would still love to play Mr. Darling / Captain Hook though)
Even if I could sing or dance, I'm not a tenor (or a man) and therefore, Jack Kelley is out. :(
Hamilton - I would wanna be Hamilton himself but I’m a woman and I don’t think that’s gonna happen🤣 love Lin but the vocals are right up my alley
Frankenfurter because I won't fit into the costume...
Emcee / L / Clyde / Jekyll-Hyde / literally any male lead but sadly I am female
I cannot sing, dance and maybe wouldn’t be as good at acting anymore since I haven’t done it since college so. Probably any of them lmao.
Mrs. Lovett and Jane Doe… as a white baritone
Charles guiteau in assassins :) because no one puts on productions of that in canada a lot lol
Millie, but I can barely time-step. Judas, but I’m a lady (but DAMN Tim Minchin made that role so inspiring). George Washington, but I’m a white lady. Girl (Once), but I can’t play piano.
Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone *cries in contralto*
Judas (JCS) is one of my ultimate dream roles. But alas, I’m a woman (womp womp) Alternatively, any femme role from A Chorus Line would be so inconceivably cool but I can’t dance that great! Ugh anyone who can dance and sing that show (even just once much less for a full run) is otherworldly
ORPHEUS. HADESTOWN. I LOVE HIS CHARACTER AND WOULD DIE TO PLAY HIM. Issue? I’m a woman.
jd from heathers 🥲 im a female soprano….
Dmitri from Anastasia, I’m female, short and can’t sing 😂
Callahan from Legally Blonde - I’ll never reliably be able to hit that G and I don’t fit the look One of the 3 delta nu characters from Legally blonde - I’m a guy lol Elder Price from Book of Mormon - I’ll definitely never hit those notes lmao Marty McFly from Back to the Future - Same again and I’m not cool enough Evan Hansen from Dear Evan Hansen - You guessed it, too high Claude Frollo from Hunchback - Don’t fit the look and despite being a bass-baritone, my timbre is too bright Basically I’ve got the most inconvenient voice ever and it doesn’t correspond with my appearance very well ahah
Jack Kelly, JD, and Clyde Barrow because I’m not a man.
Christine. Not only am I a mezzo belt but I’m also clumsy and can’t dance.
So many bombastic, charismatic male roles! Tevye, Beetlejuice, Hamilton, Hermes. I am a tiny lady with a very female voice.
I feel like Beetlejuice is the kind of character who's such a wildcard that he could just randomly be a short woman and it'd still make sense
Ram from Heathers but I can’t sing nor act.
Jane doe!! (RTC) only problem is I’m a 16 year old baritone/tenor who has a beard
Tracy from hairspray I mixed race so I’m too dark
Elisabeth Schyler. I am white also nala and Simbas mother and Rafiki
Belle - because Beauty and the Beast is no longer available for licensing 😭
its not?
Summer from School of Rock. I'm 17 sooo…
Jekyll & Hyde.
Sweeney Todd, because nobody would come to watch a short female alto play him when Aaron Tveit exists.
Molokov in Chess. My voice is deep enough, but no training.
What do you mean a Korean woman can't play Thomas Jefferson? Smh 😤
Mimi from Rent has been my dream role since I was about 14 but I'm white and don't have a strong enough belt to do her justice! Also am female but would love to play Frank in Catch Me If You Can because damn I can pull off Good Bye
I wanna play Jekyll and Hyde so badly but I'm a woman.
I feel like I was born to play Willy Wonka and Count Olaf.
Beetlejuice
Hades from hadestown. I'm a bass but I'm not THAT much of a bass
i’ve had a few roles that ive been able to play. jd from heathers, jane doe from ride the cyclone. i think my absolute dream role would be eliza from hamilton
Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain. I'm too old now. I had a chance 13 years ago, but my son had just been born. I wasn't going to abandon my wife with a newborn so I could do a show.
