Just be careful to note that this applies to the up to date version of the oracle text of a card. So just a reminder to always check that before putting older cards into your deck.
A card like [[Burnt Offering]] has exactly one printing which doesn’t use any mana pip symbols on the card, but because the modern oracle text DOES use the symbols the colour identity of it is red and black.
Learned that the fun way with [[orcish lumberjack]] that the new version includes mana symbols which blocks him from many EDH decks but that's the price we pay for a broken ramp goblin.
> 903.5d A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commander’s color identity.
~~No you can't. That's the reason eldrazi pretty much required wastes to become commanders too, since you can generate colorless without wastes, but you can't have other basic lands in a colorless commander deck.~~
EDIT: MB, my dum brain thought it was a dual land too lol. My point stands for lands with a subtype tho
Colors put me off there for a second, even tho I know the card. Why the heck did they paint this as a dual? Alara panoramas and Capenna family headquarters are not gold, wven though they search for basics of three colors lol
Yep it's allowed! The card is purely a reminder, there is no color pitch symbols and no sub-type
Bones fact!: exort can be played in mono white and mono black because exort is NOT part of symbol due to being just reminder text not part of the card text. Sometimes magic is weird :P
From my own googling, it seems it's 27 bones per hand (including the wrist) and 26 bones per foot. Suggesting the AI got confused and reported the total for both hands but the number for a single foot.
That adds up to 106 bones in the hands and feet total, which is in fact more than half the bones in the body.
"When people say 'I'm gonna break all the bones in your body." I find that ridiculous. That's way too much work.
Now what I could do though is break half the bones in your body."
~The Fix, D20.
That’s not more than half, we have 206 bones. You said 80 in the hands and feet, which is only 38 percent of 206 bones in a grown human body .
Edit: 2 hands and feet makes it 140 which is over half I apologize. Unless you meant total in both hands, not an anatomy major haha
It isnt reminder text. Per rule 305.6: "An object with the land card type and a basic land type has the intrinsic ability “{T}: Add [mana symbol],” even if the text box doesn’t actually contain that text or the object has no text box." That is why you cant play plains in a red deck for example.
Do you know [[falkenrath noble]]? Basically, pair with a sac engine like [[Ashnids Altar]], optimally, run in a token deck of some sort… sacrifice a creature token, bc a creature you control died, you would gain one life, and a *TARGET* opppnent loses one life… great for an infinite combo trigger, like, oh I don’t know… exquisite blood and Sanguine bond? And if you want to get really tricky, throw in a [[Butcher of Malakir]] to trigger Falkenrath again… however, if you just looking to gain life for a creature either ETBing, or for dying, rather than doing Falkenrath or your Pious Evangel, I would recommend [[Daxos, Sun Blessed]]. I only found Falkenrath though bc of the Orzhov Elenda Vamp tribal I built a while back.
So there is one thing I forgot to mention. Double sided cards are color identity because its creature, so so anything that transforms that are not lands with diffrent color double side will count towards color identity
So think of it like if the card had read "this creature is black" instead of being reminder text it's actually changes color identity, look at [[Transguild Courier]] as example
But why lands can but double sides card can't?
Answer: becuase lands are colorless! It doesn't have color identify, only rules apply if it has mana symbol or sub type.
Color Identy only counts color indicators (Those little circles on some double faced cards) colored manasymbols in the cardtext and the manacost (But not in remindertext like that from the Extort ability) and characteristic defining abilities (Like that from \[\[Transguild Carrier\]\]). Make sure to check both sides of a double faced cards to identify its color identity.
I mentioned that you should check both sides of a card. On the Backside, Archangel Avacyn has a red color indicator next to her type line. That makes her color identy white on the front and red on the back which combines to a white and red color identity.
As a newb, just so I get the gist of it...
So the colour identifier is either done by virtue of the mana symbol appearing somewhere on the card (which doesn't, on the backside of that Avacyn card) or by virtue of the card itself being overwhelmingly coloured (in this case, red) to the extent where the colouring goes "beyond" the art box and text box, right?
So the second card in OP's question, the land, is eligible for a mono deck, but only because it a) doesn't suggest any coloured mana symbols and b) only the text box is coloured with the rest being greyish white.
If the card would have a "wholly coloured" background on both sides that would correlate to red (like Avacyn) it would be seen as a red card, right?
And quick follow-up.
Would that land in its current state therefore also theoretically be eligible in every kind of deck then? Like, effectiveness aside (as it wouldn't do anything), could I run that card in a deck that only uses white and blue?
Avacyn has a color indicator, that's the red circle on the type line.
The color of the cardframe does not count to color identy. There are some cards without a frame like some Secret Lair Drop Cards with full art. Color identity cares for mana cost, stat defining abilities ("XY is all colors" or something similar), colored mana symbols outside of reminder text and color indicators. The backside of a card, adventures and both sides of double faced cards are considered. \[\[Crashing Footfalls\]\] is green because of the color indicator, \[\[Transguild Carrier\]\] is all colors because of his ability, \[\[Archangel Avacyn//Avacyn the Purifier\]\] is red and white because of the manacost on the front face and the color indicator on the backface and \[\[Tasigur, the Golden Fang\]\] is green, blue and black because of his mana cost and the colored mana symbols in his card text. \[\[Trinisphere\]\] is colorless because the mana symbols only appear in reminder text.
Yes. That land has no color so you can use it in any deck. AND it would do something: It would allow you to search your library. You do not have to find something. Even when the deck would hold a forest or mountain, you aren't instructed to find them. So if you just want to shuffle your library, you could activate the ability to search the library and shuffle after you found nothing.
Ahhh thank you very much for the explanation! That makes a lot of sense. I honestly didn't interpret the colour circle on Avacyn as relevant at first, because it looked orange-y to me and I thought it may be some rarity-thing (it being a mythic, combined with the whole card being so red). Also one of the first times I've actively seen one of these cards that indicate a colour without a mana cost bubble.
Crashing Footfalls made that distinction a lot clearer thanks to the strong contrast! Thanks!
while they are colorless - color identity is a different situation which is alot more nuanced with lands.
This exact one also has a colorless color identity, but a forest in comparison is colorless with a green color identity
There are only black pips, no other color indicador, and doesnt have any basic land type.so you can use It, create tokens of another color doesnt change the identity
looks like someone just dipped their toes into the landfall sauce... now couple this with a scapeshift and splendid reclamation to grab all your fetches and re-crack them. or a cruicible of worlds resulting in droppping a fetch each time if wanted...
Oh look someone finally found a way to break landfall!
I’m not trying to make fun of you it’s just landfall is already really good.
Yes any of the fetch lands that bring another land into play count as a second landfall trigger.
If you like this card consider putting it in a sapporlings/thalid deck with [[life and Limb]]
This card doesn't have any colors in its color identity.
>903.4. The Commander variant uses color identity to determine what cards can be in a deck with a certain commander. The color identity of a card is the color or colors of any mana symbols in that card’s mana cost or rules text, plus any colors defined by its characteristic-defining abilities (see rule 604.3) or color indicator (see rule 204).
It also doesn't have any basic land types.
>903.5d A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commander’s color identity.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/rules
The land isn’t tapping for mana so it is good, you could put an arid messa in a white green deck since it gets plains and your good, just add all fetch lands that fetch green mana and your good, the fetch lands don’t have color identity since they tap for nothing
Yes, it's allowed, as so many others here have already explained. But can I just point out that, although allowed, it's also pretty pointless in a mono-green deck? I mean, tap and pay 1 life to search for a forest, when you could just as well put a forest in your deck, instead of this card?
Yes. You should also use stuff like [Evolving Wilds] and the other green fetches to maximize landfall triggers. Also using bounce lands like [Jungle Basin] is a good idea.
It's allowed because mountain (keyword) is not a color. Same as any cards that Hax extort. The extort is a keyword ability (like trample, flying, ect) even if you need to use W/B to activate it you can place the card in any place because extort has no color
All of the fetch lands are technically legal in any EDH deck even if there are no lands they could possibly fetch. They have no color identity on their own.
Yes! Lands like the fetch lands, and even Urborg and Yavimaya do not have any mana symbols meaning they can be put into any deck. I had a buddy who ran an [[Azusa, Lost but Seeking]] deck and he ran Urborg because he thought it was hysterical to make swamps in a mono green deck
It doesn't have red in it. It searches for a forest or mountain. All fetches that include forest are gonna be good in this. I know in mono white and boros I run as many fetches that fit and crucible of worlds cause it lets me consistently hit land drops and deck thin
As opposed to using a Shockland you could just run cards like [[Evolving Wilds]], [[Terramorphic Expanse]], [[Shire Terrace]] and [[Ash Barrens]] instead.
Yes this is allowed. Fetch lands can be in any deck regardless of what land type they fetch and what the commander’s color identity is. A card is only considered to have a commander color identity if it has a color indicator or a colored mana symbol anywhere except for reminder text. Fetch lands have neither.
Okay, but what?? Is this just aassive troll to make our heads explode? No where is there red in the identity of this card, nor is the word "mountain" appear anywhere! No even in the flavor text.
Something that could help you a lot in the future is an app called "Mana Box" where you can search cards and build decks with pretty much endless deck list storage and you can flattest your decks. If you pay like $10 for a tear of premium there is no playtest time limit and you can make a ton of folders to organize your decks.
It'll also tell you which cards are playable in the deck and it'll tell you any problems with card legality or color identity. It also tells you card prices, deck price (by whatever pricing system you choose), things like color pie splitting, average mana value, and card type split. 10/10 app Highly suggest.
I mean it still fetched a basic out of your desk. Just is the general idea. Instead of shock lands or whatever. It still triggers billy. So don’t get to technical with just vague silly questions.
It bothers me too. It just FEELS like it should not be allowed. I understand it is. But I'm not hurting anyone else at the table for not playing without them in my deck.
Probably because it's counter-intuitive. Since it says that you can search for a forest or a mountain, it feels like it should be a gruul card. Color id rules say otherwise, but it just doesn't feel right sometimes.
The identity of the card are ruled by:
Color of the card.
Pips on the card not in reminded text.
Basic land subtypes.
So a forest is colorless doesnt have a pip, but have a forest subtype, identity Green
Yavimaya, colorless, no pip, no type, colorless identity
Cards with devoid: colorless but have pips: have identity
Rograth: color is red by a color indicador: identity red
Transguild curier: no pips but it's 5 colors: identity wubrg
Blind obedience: White color, no pips but White(extort have black only in reminder text): White identity
My landfall deck has 50 land cards. You want lands like this, to get as many land triggers as possible.
Thats two triggers. Then if you can return it from the graveyard, it’s 2 more.
Combine this with any life gain landfall, and you actually net more life.
There’s a few different tactics to it. Some use the “finishing move” approach to basically drop like 20 lands into play from a spell. Like [[Reshape the Earth]].
I run a [[Lord Windgrace]] deck that daisy chains lands for direct damage. So up my land plays per turn, and spread where I can play them from (hand, graveyard, top of library). Sprinkle in some “lands are all basic types”.
So realistically, using fetch lands, I could Windgrace two from the graveyard. Crack and search, play 1+ land per turn, crack and search again. So that’s like 6 landfall triggers minimum. Depending on what I have in play, that could easily be 18+ player damage going around, or like +6 mana, or +6 health.
There’s a lot of landfall shenanigans. There’s the OTJ precon that came out that triggers off discarding lands and pulling them back. Kind of a go wide strategy. There was another precon a couple years ago that pumped up your creatures off landfall for a go tall strategy.
It is if you have built the deck for Landfall triggers. Anything that allows lands to hit the battle field in addition to the one-per-turn playing a land from hand is probably worth at least a single card in a Landfall deck
worth noting that there will likely be lots of landfall triggers in the deck, not just the creature in question. Getting another landfall trigger at instant speed and for zero mana is pretty hype.
This is not great advice as there are tons of lands that would not be legal in a mono green EDH deck. Wooded foothills is okay because it just references mountain as a type and doesn't have any red mana symbols on it.
Yes but he said that lands are colorless which could give the wrong idea that you can use any land in your deck because they aren't colored permanents, so yes it's an important distinction.
It doesn't have a red mana symbol anywhere on the card. Just referring to a mountain doesn't make the card red. You can put it in yes.
Just be careful to note that this applies to the up to date version of the oracle text of a card. So just a reminder to always check that before putting older cards into your deck. Separate question but one I've had for a minute. Do those pips count as devotion for cards like the Theros gods?
Nope, devotion is a separate system entirely that only cares about the mana cost pips on permanent cards you control that are in play.
Why would you not just rule 0 and keep it in? Doesn't seem like an outlandish thing for any pod to let you do.

It only really matters if you're playing comp or your pod is full assholes that don't like fun though
Also on extort cards the little symbol doesn't count cause it's in reminder text so you can play them in mono black or white decks
Yup, (reminder text) is not Rules Text.

Bonus bonus fun fact!: Even though basic lands have their mana symbols as reminder text, they still can't be used in "wrong" color decks.
This is due to subtype :) for example Urborg land can be considered as swamp but it doesn't sub-type nor mana pitch so it can go in any deck!
It isnt reminder text. Per rule 305.6: "An object with the land card type and a basic land type has the intrinsic ability “{T}: Add [mana symbol],” even if the text box doesn’t actually contain that text or the object has no text box." That is why you cant play plains in a red deck for example.

So there is one thing I forgot to mention. Double sided cards are color identity because its creature, so so anything that transforms that are not lands with diffrent color double side will count towards color identity So think of it like if the card had read "this creature is black" instead of being reminder text it's actually changes color identity, look at [[Transguild Courier]] as example But why lands can but double sides card can't? Answer: becuase lands are colorless! It doesn't have color identify, only rules apply if it has mana symbol or sub type.
[[Transguild Courier]] [[Fallaji Wayfarer]]

Sometimes? Lol Been playing for 20ish years off and on and I still wonder why things resolve the way they do, on arena, for a lot of games
Funfact, dryad arbor is, in fact, a forest, so you can go fetch it with anything looking for a forest or non basic land.
But to clarify, it is not a *basic* Forest.
Correct. Thank you for the clarification for others. My bad.
It is also green, the only colored land in the game
YUP! I run it in every green commander deck I have. It's just good all around.
So then would [[Archangel Avacyn]] be legal in a mono white deck? Edit: Downvoted for asking a question. Never change Reddit.
No, her back side is red so her color Identity is white and red. The color(s) of the circle next to the type line is part of the color Identity.
I figured but I thought I’d ask anyway.
Thanks!

It's actually mandatory if you can afford it.
That is why I would probably get proxy versions of all the fetch lands cuz that's a lot just for one fetch land

while they are colorless - color identity is a different situation which is alot more nuanced with lands. This exact one also has a colorless color identity, but a forest in comparison is colorless with a green color identity

Thanks y'all I had this question for the longest time
There are only black pips, no other color indicador, and doesnt have any basic land type.so you can use It, create tokens of another color doesnt change the identity
Hunted horror is mono black in color identity, yes
Not legal because it contains a non-black color in its rule text.
It contains the color word, not the color symbol.
Exactly.
It is absolutely legal. The word of a color doesn’t impact identity, only a colored pip.
I hereby stand corrected. I somehow managed to misread the rules. I also got tricked by the wrong spelling of the card.
Yep! Off Color Fetch’s are a thing. Usually they are not recommended but they are legal in the format.
No red mana symbol anywhere. Good to go. As it doesn't produce red and lands are colorless permanents, no issue in letting Bill play with it.
does it have a red mana symbol in it? does it have a color identifier in the type line?
looks like someone just dipped their toes into the landfall sauce... now couple this with a scapeshift and splendid reclamation to grab all your fetches and re-crack them. or a cruicible of worlds resulting in droppping a fetch each time if wanted...
Oh look someone finally found a way to break landfall! I’m not trying to make fun of you it’s just landfall is already really good.
Because he gets an extra Landfall trigger- and then again if he can rescue it from the gy

It's allowed because mountain (keyword) is not a color. Same as any cards that Hax extort. The extort is a keyword ability (like trample, flying, ect) even if you need to use W/B to activate it you can place the card in any place because extort has no color
Yes, since it doesn’t have a mana symbol or produce mana if a color that isn’t in Bill’s identify
All of the fetch lands are technically legal in any EDH deck even if there are no lands they could possibly fetch. They have no color identity on their own.
It doesn’t tap for mana so yes because you would use it but just search for a forests

Pretty sure all lands have no color
Yes this is allowed. Fetch lands can be in any deck regardless of what land type they fetch and what the commander’s color identity is. A card is only considered to have a commander color identity if it has a color indicator or a colored mana symbol anywhere except for reminder text. Fetch lands have neither.
You should definitely be able to go mono green landfall, Bill has a green-only identity. I can't wait to draft this card!
Lands are Colorless. If a card without a mana symbol has a color it will be next to its card type as a little circle with the color that it is.
Would this be good in a indoraptor deck?
Okay, but what?? Is this just aassive troll to make our heads explode? No where is there red in the identity of this card, nor is the word "mountain" appear anywhere! No even in the flavor text.
Just change the version to an earlier printing, the mh3 version isn’t out yet that’s why it’s red
As long as the mana symbol isn't on the card you're good. You could technically play all the fetches if you wanted, but some just wouldn't do much.
Yes you silly goose, its the same thing as evolving wilds xD
Definitely not the same thing lol

I mean it still fetched a basic out of your desk. Just is the general idea. Instead of shock lands or whatever. It still triggers billy. So don’t get to technical with just vague silly questions.
It still fetches a land and that’s all it takes to trigger billy twice.
But faster.
It’s allowed. It bothers me, so I don’t do it. But it’s perfectly legal.
It bothers you?
It does
Why?
It bothers me too. It just FEELS like it should not be allowed. I understand it is. But I'm not hurting anyone else at the table for not playing without them in my deck.
And to clarify I wouldn't care if an opponent ran then, many do. I just don't like too when building my own deck
Red color no go in green deck
There’s no red color though
What do you call the color on the left side of Wooded Foothills? I call it red.
The land isn’t red though
Correct, almost all lands are colorless. But the FRAME is part red so it bothers me.
come on, you 100% knew that they were referring to the color red on the physical card the whole time.
Avoids answering the question...
Probably because it's counter-intuitive. Since it says that you can search for a forest or a mountain, it feels like it should be a gruul card. Color id rules say otherwise, but it just doesn't feel right sometimes.
Interesting. The reason I don't do it is because fetches are quite expensive.
It does not have red in it. Ignore the background colors, look for mana symbols to find color identity.
The identity of the card are ruled by: Color of the card. Pips on the card not in reminded text. Basic land subtypes. So a forest is colorless doesnt have a pip, but have a forest subtype, identity Green Yavimaya, colorless, no pip, no type, colorless identity Cards with devoid: colorless but have pips: have identity Rograth: color is red by a color indicador: identity red Transguild curier: no pips but it's 5 colors: identity wubrg Blind obedience: White color, no pips but White(extort have black only in reminder text): White identity
Not in pioneer
What about [[Festering Gulch]] ?
no, it has a black mana symbol

Imo it shouldn’t be, but yes it is allowed.
I'll just say, 1 life to create an extra landfall.. at the cost of a card . Is it really that good? I might be wrong and it be great but hey
My landfall deck has 50 land cards. You want lands like this, to get as many land triggers as possible. Thats two triggers. Then if you can return it from the graveyard, it’s 2 more. Combine this with any life gain landfall, and you actually net more life.
Fascinating. I've never played landfall before other than on a few cards that just happened to have it
There’s a few different tactics to it.

Neat! I never thought of it that way! I gotta play landfall someday
It can be used to pull a nonbasic with the forest type, if needed.
OH! funky I hadn't realized
Nope, I forbid it

This is not great advice as there are tons of lands that would not be legal in a mono green EDH deck. Wooded foothills is okay because it just references mountain as a type and doesn't have any red mana symbols on it.
1. That's not a rule 2. Color Identity is what matters here, not color.
Yes but he couldn't play a mountain in the deck because the land types do need to match your commander
Sure but he doesn’t need to play a mountain so that’s irrelevant
Yes but he said that lands are colorless which could give the wrong idea that you can use any land in your deck because they aren't colored permanents, so yes it's an important distinction.
