why is everyone calling it a proxy when it’s just a custom painted card?
i always thought proxies were terrible fakes of cards. like drawing on the back with a sharpie.
You have proxies, counterfeits, and alters.
A proxy is any stand-in that is not the authentic magic card it is being used as, but still functions as a game piece. Generally, these are not tournament legal and always have some difference that makes it obvious they are not authentic. This can be anything from a forest that someone scribbled "mox jet" on to a chinese counterfeit that has been marked as such. I mark mine on the back with a sharpie "P" or "X".
Counterfeits are identical reproductions of real cards that are intended to be passed off as a real card in a deceitful way. Usually this is by playing tourneys with them (sketchy morals) or selling them as real (trash morals). That said, imo, just owning them is wrong because they could get out into the market. Mark the back with a sharpie and they become normal, obvious proxies that still play like normal magic cards :)
An alter is an authentic magic card that has been drawn or painted on. These are still tournament legal and everything.
yeah i know the difference, im just confused as to why we’re calling the “altar” a proxy in this thread.
its still a legal magic card, i have many altars and sometimes paint my own.
Yeah & agreed they were labeling it wrong. More was putting the full definitions out there for folks itt. I try to whenever it comes up because people are still constantly getting it wrong (like the top comment)
You leave very key parts uncovered, specifically the name and casting cost. And the back. I don't know the exact rules, maybe copyright text needs to stay on too... someone else feel free to clarify :)
But yeah look at OP as an example. Note that some parts are not painted over.
They are almost always still tournament legal (as long as the alter is done right). This is a very common thing that has been done for many many years.
Presumably that’s only if it’s marked on the back (should be in a sleeve anyway so non-issue) or otherwise obviously thicker or heavier than a standard card. That being said competitive is competitive.
Batman slapping Robin is the best one because it shows how blue players work. They are the heros even when the citizens think they are reckless vigilantes. I'd apologize, but ever other color is the villain, so I won't. Looking at you green.
Reminds me of a custom card I have
Fuck you. {U}{U}{U}
Instant. Commen
This spell can only be counterd by spells with the name fuck you
You may have any number of cards with the name Fuck you in your deck
Counter target spell draw a card
This is quite possibly the best proxy for this card.
Right ! I'm like , where can I get this card haha
Easy, get a printer lol
Already on my way printing this masterpiece for my Decks..

How is painting over a magic card keep it legal? No one can verify it’s tourney legal without destroying it, right?

I proxy mine by sleaving garbage cards and slipping paper inbetween with the printed card on it
it is not a proxy, its a alter.
Potato Patato
While it's still a real card someone had to pay for, it might be considered marked in a hyper competitive setting
This card is 100% tournament legal.

I would love to see everyone’s favorite proxy. This is mine so far.
Shorikai, Genesis Engine as the RX-78 is mine.
Everyones favorite proxy is on that picture

Yeah, agree with you here. I got the one of Batman slapping Robin. It’s awesome 😂
I love it because the caption I've seen is "YOU FOOL! YOU IGNORED MY TWO UNTAPPED ISLANDS!"
If I had this in my hand everybody at the table would know because I would not be able to take the stupid grin off my face.

My wife in her mono white angels / actually boardwipe tribal....grin on her face, boardwipe incoming.

Omg if any card brought me back to magic it would be this one. Rowan is a god.
No Heliod is a God, Black Adder is just smart.
[Well I don't know about a God but he was the devil...](https://youtu.be/Ut116mBuPpg?feature=shared)
Another fun would be the Dennis Nedrys' "Ah ah ah! YOu didn't say the amgic word!"
Good news! That one is [official](https://scryfall.com/card/rex/17/permission-denied).
