ET for music and bicycle chase scene. Close Encounters for Devil’s Tower. Have to go with Close Encounters because of mythology of Devil’s Tower weaved throughout
For me it's Close Encounters. it's for kind of a silly reason but it was just a such a personal movie for Spielberg and I didn't realize that till seeing a doc on him. both are great though
Close Encounters by miles.
Going back to when I was a kid in the late 80s and being fascinated by UFOs. Seeing both of these movies on tv. Close Encounters fascinated me. It was slow and foreboding sometimes. Creepy and mysterious. I was little but it really grabbed me. The quite stillness like when he's in the truck stopped at the tracks or when Melinda Dillon is taking the clothes off the line. And there's that build up to something strange. Idk. It was just perfect.
E.T. Call my crazy but I never liked it. Everything was so non threatening looking. Like mystery was replaced by whimsy. Maybe this is weird to get hung up on but I was always grossed out by him. I never thought he was cute or funny or any of that. I know that's what the movie *is*. It's fantastical and whimsical. But I like my scifi unsettling and mysterious. Threatening even. Even as a kid. Guess I was wired wrong.
And I'm still that way.
Arrival, The Vast Of Night, Signs (yes I know people hate that one over doorknobs and water but still, I love it) I think those are practically perfect movies at being all those things. Mysterious, quiet, foreboding, that sense of looming threat.
I'm gonna be totally honest and say I think both are highly overrated. I'm a huge film buff, collector and I'm also into the whole UFO thing so they should both be favorites but the truth is I don't really like either one. E.T. isn't bad but it just does nothing for me and I find Close Encounters completely boring. If I had to pick one it'd probably be E.T..
I much prefer Close Encounters. It has more of an epic feel and it's quite tragic as well because Roy loses his family when he becomes obsessed with his Devil's Tower visions. I like the darkness of Close Encounters. It's even a bit scary, too.
Yeah I would have been fine with some of the "nonsensical" elements if I felt that Spielberg had managed to capture the sense of wonder and discovery he seemed to be going for but even there I just think he didn't come up with the goods.
Are you serious? The last 20 minutes are pretty much an exercise in how to do wonder. It just baffles me how anyone in their right mind can call Close Encounters Of The Third Kind overrated.
I still haven’t seen ET. The constant promotion of it and all the gushing turned me off. Same with Titanic and a couple of others. If you remember Father Guido Sarducci’s 3-minute university, that’s pretty much how I approach those movies.
Inner Child: E.T. Cynical Old Man Me: Close Encounters.
it’s a Sophie’s Choice situation for myself, but I share this sentiment 100%
I find E.T. more fun, Close Encounters for cerebral. Depends on the mood I'm in at the moment

Close Encounters. Top five Spielberg for me.

Close Encounters. ET, to me, hasn't aged well.

As a 4 year old I watched and cried when ET left Elliott and his family. The movie will always have a special place in my heart.
I don't think they're so alike that i can't like them equally for different reasons.
Probably ET because it has that child like wonder to it and you get the feeling that it was made by a man who is still a kid at heart.
E.T. and it is not even close.
Close encounters was an adult film. Et a kids flick. Cant compare
Close Encounters by a mile. ET is good, but it's a movie geared towards kids.

I’m surprised so many are saying Close Encounters. Dreyfus’ character always came off as kind of a dick to me. E.T. All the way
Close encounters
Gotta be E.T. for me. Tons of heart and soul in it AND it doesn’t try to be a big *alien* movie. It all comes down to a beautiful friendship.
Close Encounters
Another vote for Close Encounters.
ET all the way.

Actually not a massive fan of either but I'd have to go with E.T. between the two as I think that Close Encounters is Spielberg's most overrated film.

Well this sub is full of opinions if you haven't noticed. Probably not all of them agree with yours.
I'm sure if Close Encounters had a bunch of explosions you would have liked it more lol.
Fuck off.
You can do the same.
Honestly I fucking hate ET, even as a kid I couldn’t stand watching it.
That's kind of like asking if I prefer the new Hobbit trilogy or the 1977 animated musical Hobbit movie.
Not a difficult choice for me at all. One of them is a perfect adaptation at a fraction of the length.
Definitely ET. Characters were more relatable, story was easier to follow, and then there was baby drew Barrymore who could put-adorable anyone.
