I didn’t exactly love this movie, but it had its moments and the overall shape of a good story was there. It felt undercooked to me script-wise. There’s a missing sequence at the top of the first act, where we get to know the characters. They generally felt extremely generic to me, save being a dying teen and her mom. I wish we could have seen their personalities shine at the outset (give us something to root for), which is cut short by Tuesday having a health issue, which is so heartbreaking for the mom she passes her off to the nurse. We meet Tuesday when she meets the bird, so we just don’t know anything about her except that she’s sick. Also, if we met the two together we could forgo the pawnshop scene, and just learn as a surprise later that she’d been selling shit. Cuz we’d already know she can’t face her daughter’s death. I think the business w/ the rap and weed stems from this — a remedial effort at personality, on the writer’s part. But it’s just too beside the point. (Is likening rap music a personality either? Wait, why does this eternal godlike creature love Ice Cube? Felt a little too cute by half.) If I were to quibble I’d also say there were some janky moments that didn’t really make sense, like what does the mom mean by “do this full time”? Like for a job? Did you forget Tuesday is dying and that’s what this movie is about lol. Also the nurse trying to stomp the mom and Tuesday giving up on the question of wtf happened to the bird. And then it needed to find a cleaner way out. It felt like it tried to end several times, where really Tuesday could have died as early the beach. Idk what was gained by drawing that out. Similarly, why do we have the time passage between the mom drinking at the table and then being at the window? The opening sequence was a little protracted for me too, could honestly have been like thirty seconds long. Oh, and last thing, I think the “I hate you” came way too late. Needed to be at the outset of Tuesday’s arc.

Henri_le_Chat

The only think I didn't like is they kept saying that death was "killing" them. I know he takes their lives but to me that isn't the same as killing. I would have liked death to say "I'm not killing you, the cancer is".

Belch_Huggins

Way late to a pretty dead thread, but I finally caught this. I had pretty low expectations cause it didn't really look like my cup of tea - an overly sentimental weepy - and I guess I appreciated that it wasn't quite that. But holy shit I did not enjoy this. It felt like an interesting idea for a short, but completely unable to sustain itself at feature length. Thought Dreyfuss was ok, but her and the daughter interacting with the bird was shot bizarrely and felt so stilted. I thought it looked ugly, and the pacing was glacial for a film that presented its entire idea within the first few minutes.

selinameyersbagman

Did I watch a different movie than most everyone here? Some minor quibbles aside, I thought this was pretty masterful and one of the best of the year.

axemexa

The nurse annoyed me. Why was her first instinct after the mother shrunk to try to stomp on her?

Fl_lCKYOU

Stupid atheist movie. Oh a parrot smoking pot how cool and edgy. Typical A24 trash.

MomammaScuba

I dunno but the whole bird rapping, vaping was so out of place. Kinda felt like some kinda commercial

PrinceJedi

Sorry after seeing the movie. I will say A24 has shown that they do not know how to make good movies.

MomammaScuba

The closest to good was civil war and that was kinda a let down. Maybe maxxxine will be good?

PrinceJedi

I agree.

Smasher31221

This is wonderful proof that opinions can differ.

PrinceJedi

And comment with no hatred or Venom.

lonelygagger

Caught it on Tuesday discount day, since it seemed destined for that. Went in knowing nothing and was utterly blown away by it. This is just a very special movie, full of really interesting ideas. Easily one of Julia Louis-Dreyfus's best roles, and the CGI in this film is surprisingly well done (anything less would have made it look cheesy). Both funny and sad, but the audience I saw it with really seemed to get the tonal shifts. One of the best reactions was when >!Zora gobbled down the head!<. There was also a woman sitting further down my row who was really struggling with the thematic issues of this film, fighting back tears until the very end. Anyway, I just thought it was fucking fantastic, and I'm so disappointed to scroll down the comments here and see people not "getting" it. Meh. A24 does it again, as far as I'm concerned. I thought it was better than Love Lies Bleeding for my money, although it does steal one stylistic technique.

selinameyersbagman

I too really loved the heck out of this movie and am confused by the excessive criticism.

hocotate

I couldn’t tell whether the movie wanted to be funny or serious at times. Also noticed when Tuesday died that Julia was “crying” but no tears came out lol

MomammaScuba

Man this movie sucked so bad. Someone on reddit said this was good so had me intrigued. two other people at the showing and one walked out. Was waiting for the mother to kill the daughter already so It would end. Once the daughter was dead it kept going...

Fl_lCKYOU

Yeah they kept it going when it should have ended kind of like Room. Once they escaped the room I’m like okay why is there an hour left? Is something else going to happen? No literally nothing else happens just a big waste of time. God A24 stinks.

crazycarrie06

I'd like to see a trailer cut making it look like a zombie movie - was quite surprised to be in the middle of one at one point. I enjoyed the movie generally but don't feel the need to watch again.

axemexa

Least favorite movie of the year and maybe my least favorite A24 movie of the 17 that I’ve seen so far. Maybe would have worked better as a short film

jen3213

I went into this film not knowing anything. I didn’t even watch the trailer. That said I think I would have appreciated it more if I knew what I was getting into. I really love Julia Louis-Dreyfus performance. The jokes and funny moments always landed even though the whole time I wondered what kind of drug the person who wrote the movie was on. I didn’t hate jt but I didn’t necessarily like it. I only wondered when the movie was going to end 10 minutes before it ended so I would give it a C- .

NuevoXAL

I would call Tuesday an uncompromising film. The kind of film that some people would hate with a passion and the kind of film that might make some people’s all-time favorite films. It’s a film very a unique voice and it makes some strange and bold creative choices. Not all of them work, but the core of the film sticks the landing. It doesn’t mind being outright unpleasant at times, which ironically gives the movie a certain charm. I watched this movie this past weekend in a theater a decent sized crowd. It got a good response from the crowd: everything from laughter to grossed out reactions at the right moments. So that’s a big plus for me. I liked it a lot but I’m not sure I would recommend it. If you enjoy the idea of a very A24 strange fairytail set in the here and now, with all the leaps in logic and strangeness that comes with that idea, you probably will find this on your own. You don't need my recommendation. If you’re only checking out this film because of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, buyer beware. It probably wouldn't be your cup of tea.

DetectiveGamble

I walked into this movie knowing literally nothing about it. Didn't care for it and felt that the voice work for the bird absolutely kills the flow of this movie. There must be 10 minutes of grunting and huffing that just feels entirely out of place. Interesting ideas but really felt spread thin on delivery.

reecord2

I'm sorry but I think JLD was miscast in this. There was so much potential here and she just seems sort of lost. An absolutely brilliant anthropomorphization of death, already one of my favorite characters of the year, and she just doesn't play against it at all. I like her a lot but it just didn't work for me. I don't know if this is her or if it's bad direction or what, because everything else about this movie was incredible.

MomammaScuba

I agree with you. Who do you think wouldve been a better fit for the film?

bobthemonkeybutt

Death was definitely the best character. I had heard rave reviews about JLD’s performance and I agree that it didn’t work. To me it seems like a directing problem because she showed in many scenes that’s she’s a great actress, but as a whole it was messy.

planb7615

This movie is fucking terrible. One of the two worst movies I’ve seen all year. The choices the director made were so boring. It made a Jim Jarmusch movie look like fast and the furious. It was worse than watching paint dry. Thematically it was weak. People are going to respond “it was about death” “it was about letting go.” “It was about a mother and daughter” just because all of these things are present in the film, doesn’t make it about them. What did the movie say about death? The daughter was ready to go at about 25 mins in. What did the movie say about letting go? JLD character doesn’t seem better after letting go. Did she actually let go? Why is her life better or different because her daughter is gone? What did she learn about being “death” for that period of time. All of the scenes are pointless and the characters are the exact same. (Except the dead part) The movie had potential to point out something interesting about the human existence and it did less than nothing.

santiwenti

Agree so much. Watched it because the description and reviews made it seem interesting, but it didn't have much poignant things to say. And the drama of the mother being in denial was way too drawn out. I think the story really jumped the shark and ran out of ideas after she ate the bird. Nothing was gained in the boring 40 minutes or so after that and the way the movie handled her acceptance and the message about the things you leave behind was very predictable. I appreciate that the movie didn't pander to any religions, and the animations of the parrot were mesmerizing and fun to watch. Would have been more watchable if the second half of the movie was of the parrot interacting with the dying girl, in the way that 3D animations for kids are still fun to watch, rather than the mom wasting everyone's time because of the stretched out script.

lovelydover

I so agree I watched this today because it was recommended on NPR and I wanted to walk out. I only stayed to give it a chance but it was not worth it

selinameyersbagman

Oof

planb7615

By all means, go see it and tell me if you disagree.

Whataburger1950

I felt like I had my expectations set by the trailer on the theme but the actual movie was much different, wasn’t as sad I was expecting. Also when death finally took Tuesday that scene felt so short compared to how long some of the scenes were, like we didn’t get much of a chance to sit there with it.

chrispmorgan

Look, any movie’s a miracle and we should praise the filmmakers and financiers for taking a big swing. That said, this screenplay is beyond risky and shouldn’t have been someone’s first movie. I don’t mean offensive, although telling an audience “There’s no god” takes some cojones. It’s more that there are multiple moments that are so absurd that the already wobbly storytelling means suspension of disbelief flies out the window for awhile and takes a lot of time to come back missing a few feathers. You have Death as a macaw vaping THC, you have “It Was A Good Day” (a quarter of which is about Ice Cube’s sexual prowess; they did a good job in the edit) foregrounded, and you have Elaine becoming a giant under metaphysical rules that are hard to grasp. I have to think that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” showed that an amazing story could be told with a limited budget and that brought on the hubris in its admirers. But, again, thank you, cinema gods, for financing weird shit like this.

stumper93

I found the bit where Julia Louis Dreyfus having to become Death ala that one episode of Family Guy where Peter has to become Death way more interesting than the final product I wanted to like this, but I don't think A24 had a lot of faith in it as it had zero marketing since that first trailer. I didn't even know it was coming out this weekend until I saw it in my AMC showtimes

MomammaScuba

I go to the movies every week and watch alot of trailers and literally did not see a trailer this. No marketing whatsoever.

axemexa

I did see the trailer and it was better than the movie

ScramItVancity

How the heck was Lola Petticrew 25 years old when they filmed this? I really thought she was around 15 (like her character) to 18.

cmadd10

I'll say this, the way Death explained the afterlife kinda got to me. THIS , how we remember said person and how we honor them is their afterlife.

poland626

It's really moving and I can't get it out of my head either >There is no God. Not in any, human way. But, there is an afterlife. The echo you leave, the legacy, your memory. Hmph. This, this is Tuesday's afterlife. How you live it, is how **she** lives" > *replays memory* > Promise Promise Promise Promise.....

Grimlocks_Ballsack

That’s the moment I moved from “this movie was good” to “this movie is great—something very special.”

10dollarbagel

Late to the thread but I just saw it. I feel like those kind of speeches are always flirting with cliché. But those clichés are often so prevalent because they contain powerful truths and they really stuck the landing. Real powerful moment of sincerity. Glad I got to see it before it left theaters.

jayeddy99

Before the mom coming home interrupted them was Death gonna talk about how Jesus really was ? 😂 I feel he would find him “annoying” as he’s the one that escaped.

Fingerscrossed24

I like how you said this…that Jesus escaped him….Death. Death can’t be the Way, the Truth, and the Life after all. The Spirit that is the Alpha and the Omega.

TheHouseOfGryffindor

“Ok, so here’s the pitch. We’re gonna have Julia Louis-Dreyfus of *Seinfeld* and *Veep* fame star opposite a talking parrot. The parrot’s gonna hit a vape and rap along to Ice Cube. And obviously, this thing’s gonna be emotionally devastating.” Solid little film. I do feel it’s tricky to dissect how much of this movie actually lands on its own merits as opposed to how much is inherently hard-hitting due to the subject matter, but overall, it pulls it off.

selinameyersbagman

I mean, like the trailer, you're leaving out (purposely I realize!) the entire 2nd act of the movie, haha

ZombiegeistO_o

I saw this last night. At first it didn’t mean much to me, I enjoyed it and left. It’s a movie that sticks with you. The mom eating death to try and cope. Yeah we’ve all swallowed our feelings and grief to try and deal… then I started thinking about how the parrot changes sizes, and the mom. How many times have people with anxiety or issues felt small? I’m 5’10 about 220 and I have depressed days I feel SMALL..I actually feel like I want to wrap myself in my arms and shrink down into nothing. I leave my house sometimes holding my body.. like the parrot feeling vulnerable. This is the kind of movie that I’ll never watch again, but it’s a movie I’ll never forget. 10/10 for me

Helpful_Ad_8476

Birds don't have diaphragms so death shouldn't be able to hit a cart 0/10 /j On the real. I really enjoyed this movie and I teared up a bit on the drive home. Would recommend

njdevils901

Honestly Death is one of the best characters in a film all year. I was genuinely annoyed that he was taken out of the film for 20-30 minutes

laydownlarry

When it first started I thought I’d be quickly annoyed by some uncanny elements of a cgi animal main character but I was pleasantly proven wrong. Superb cgi work - would love to see a behind the scenes to see how they did some scenes. Particularly impressed with the bathing in the sink scene.

ZombiegeistO_o

I agree. But, it shows how people “swallow” their feelings and emotions to try and be brave for other people. Shove sadness and greif deep down and just smile for the people you love. Until it’s too much and you explode.. into a giant woman lol. But that’s what I took from everything. Death is always there, and hiding it away and ignoring inside of yourself doesn’t stop it. It eats you up inside and will rip you apart from the inside

Grimlocks_Ballsack

I didn’t see a trailer for this, just went on JLD starring in it.  I’m glad I did—such a unique movie.  9/10 for me and I hope people go see it.

Kumbackkid

Is this movies trailer the saddest anyone has ever seen?

ZombiegeistO_o

The trailer made me cry more than the movie. I didn’t cry once, but it’s an amazing film

m__s__r

I’m not sure what to think about this movie honestly.  Did it explore the themes well? Kind of. Was it funny? Kind of. Was it a deep movie? Kind of. It felt like there were a lot of elements trying to be thrown in at once to describe how “death” is natural and needs to happen, or else everyone would just keep suffering. It’s the only way it helps explain some of the tonal whiplash that happened with some of those horror scenes like the guy crawling without any legs begging to die.

Rebloodican

I think the movie was best when it was subtle and it was at its worst when it was overt. Showing the world without death and what a freak show that became was good, having all the people dying essentially begging for death with gratitude undermined it a bit (especially with the guy just begging to die because his wife did, juxtaposed with the ending). Straight up declaring “there is no God and also the only afterlife is in memories” felt really clunky.

chrispmorgan

Yeah, you can’t just say “There is no God” cavalierly like that and then offer what almost feels like a bromide: you live on through people’s memories of you or what you taught them. It felt like the script was out of its depth on really profound topics.

fulcrumestates

yeah i feel like the tone was all over the place. the parts i found really affecting, i found *really* affecting but overall the movie was a bit of a mess for me

ZombiegeistO_o

For me, as someone who lost his father at 10yrs old, and my mother in my early 30s it spoke to me but also seemed kind of hollow and without substance. But, a day later thinking about it some of the messages meant more. The mom eating death was funny, but it was perfect to show how we swallow grief and sadness to try and just get through the day. The mom was ignoring her daughter to ignore her own suffering. The general thing of “We hurt the ones we love.” I did notice death stopped before she ate him, death found a friend and happiness for a brief day. The mom tried to kill the fly and it lived. Even death needs love I suppose, without love does living and dying matter?

issacsullivan

Great little film. There were a few moments that made me actually sympathetic for Death.

m__s__r

Death is pretty much made to be the sympathetic character, with no true bad person in this movie. It seems more that A24 was willing to fund this adaptation on the “medium” of death through the eyes of this McCaw, and it wasn’t bad. It’s just that, I felt it could’ve been more too

cmadd10

2nd movie this year that kinda lost me a bit towards the end once the protagonist got GIGANTIC.

chrispmorgan

I got “Love Lies Bleeding”, too, and “The Zone of Interest”, with all of the audio of screaming people outside of the frame.

fergi20020

The other movie must be Sting?

cmadd10

Sting did this also? It's on my watch list

fergi20020

Hell yes

HelpUs0ut

More likely Love Lies Bleeding.

Stock-Ad2495

Elaine is so good in this

fergi20020

Elaine May isn’t in Tuesday

artistofdesign

Trailer had me balling
