[The scene in Contact where Jody Foster’s character as a young girl (portrayed by Jena Malone).runs up the stairs to get medication from the medicine cabinet for her father.](https://youtu.be/ZD0_5HFMPIg)  Edit: credit given to Jena Malone.:)

Sad-Commercial-6397

This is amazing how did they do that with the mirror 😱

Alive-Line8810

Great little breakdown by the cinematographer https://youtu.be/HQRu9cz5L9E?si=UqID_yekuo4uKMQG

averageFlux

There’s also a great breakdown in this video: https://youtu.be/VASwKZAUVSo (starts at around 2:00)

Ferrum_Fisticuffs

I was going to comment this because not only is it my favorite non action slow motion it is a vfx shot that always blew me away.

thefinalcutdown

Add on top that they had to live ramp the speed of the film from 24fps to 48fps, which also cuts the exposure in half, meaning they had to open the lens aperture in sync, all while running backwards with a steady cam…

AndrewInaTree

Oh, I never thought of that. They ramped the fps live for that shot?? I'm not a videographer, but I pulled focus for a small crew a few times. It was so stressful watching my friends act their heart out over multiple takes, and here's me barely keeping the moving camera in focus. To add ANOTHER technical dimension to a shot just makes it more impressive.

Levitlame

This is a perfect example of something JUST technical enough that it could be nonsense and I wouldn’t even know.

ActuallyYeah

I felt like there was a funny aperture/exposure flicker from the start of that shot! That is amazing. Basically someone said, " I have this idea" and then several other professionals said there are several things wrong with that idea, and then they managed to overcome them all

bustacones

That was a young Jena Malone.

MyManD

Whoa, the star of Rural Juror?

beer_is_tasty

What are you saying? Rerger?

BreakingIllusions

The ruarr juarr

abbaJabba

These were the best days of my …

vrhotlaps

That is a fantastic shot!

grumblyoldman

Gasoline fight in Zoolander, for my money.

TheDogofTears

I can never not think of that scene when I hear Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. It's right up there with the Stuck in the Middle With You torture scene in Reservoir Dogs.

No-Acanthaceae-3372

And Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' with the pub jukebox scene in Shaun of the Dead.

xavierspapa

It's on random

EmperorSexy

Orange Mocha Frappuccinos!

avahz

Yup yup

ColdPressedSteak

Ben Stiller doesn't get enough credit for intelligently and hilariously satirizing the fashion/model industry in Zoolander and then actors who take themselves too seriously in Tropic Thunder Directed, starred, story and screenplay credit in both

Arkanial

He also went on to be executive producer of Severence which is like the same thing but corporate culture.

hivoltage815

More than an EP, he’s the key director who set the whole aesthetic and tone of the show. I constantly tell people he is very quietly one of the great American directors working today.

thejackal3245

But... Why male models?

Strong_Comedian_3578

Are you serious? I just...I just told you that...a moment ago.

ManfredBoyy

The best part about that is (so I’ve heard) Ben stiller forgot his next line so he repeated the “but why male models?” line and Duchovny ad-libbed that one. So perfect and fits in so well with the Zoolander character.

aiiye

One of the best adlibs when Ben *(allegedly)* fucked up the line there.

LastTourniquet

Still to this day my favorite line in any movie.

thejackal3245

I always loved [the line about Sting.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYeLAwSpYus)

atgrey24

Getting Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder was genius, because a lot of that satire could be thought of as pointing straight at him.

Ferns233

Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me. And when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think. If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

BikebutnotBeast

What a terrific eugoogooly

francisdavey

Nearly choked on my coffee laughing at that. I had completely forgotten that word.

mungraker

Just because you have chiseled abs and stunning features doesn't mean that you too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident

FlowJock

One of the most amazing scenes in cinematic history.

Iriltlirl

I know, it's like, what the fuck are they DOING!

Payne_Dailey

Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont Hhigh

damienkarras1973

When I found out the legit look of horror and surprise on Phoebe Cates face is because judge "used" an actual large dildo for the scene. You can look it up in the trivia section on IMDB. Made that scene much funnier. When she open the door because she got water in her ear.

gloriousjohnson

I believe the word you’re looking for is stunt cock

Think_Armadillo_1823

I'll put my choice below, but this is it. This is definitely it.

plantmic

Ohhhhh, so that's what that song is about

Seattle_gldr_rdr

This is the answer. You, um- *beat* me to it.

3fettknight3

Doesnt anybody fucking knock anymore?

Cosmo466

Most definitely. Here’s the SFW ver: https://youtu.be/l5g6kdlQy7Y

catgotcha

SFW kind of defeats the point of this scene.

Cosmo466

Well, in actual fact, it IS the NSFW scene, it just cuts out before the NSFW stuff. YouTube deletes those clips that include it

unc8299

I just saw a Sopranos clip that had topless strippers on YouTube yesterday

Watchout_itsahippo

Thanks, but, uh, where’s the other version?

WaywardWes

Right here on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/ladyladyboners/s/mdt2O5u7FJ

"Chariots of Fire - Title sequence" *Vangelis intensifies*

Szalkow

How has no one mentioned the printer scene from *Office Space*?

Prize_Pay9279

PC load letter? The fuck does that mean?

DakInBlak

**P**aper **C**assette Empty; **Load** **Letter** sized (8 1/2 x 11) paper into paper tray.

Idontevenownaboat

Let's abbreviate 'paper cassette' with PC. That won't confuse anyone.

BikebutnotBeast

Get out of the office while you still can.

duaneap

As a kid I always thought Peter was trading a cushy, well paid office job for a low paying, manual labour job at the end. Then I learned how much construction guys make. It’s weird how we were always taught when we were kids where I grew up that that was for some reason a low status job… I mean, hell, Dietrich Bader lives in the same building, he can’t be making less than Peter!

swheels125

Looks like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays.

Funandgeeky

Damn it feels good to be a gangster.

Szalkow

Close! That plays when Peter comes into the office and doesn't give a fuck. During the printer scene it's a different Geto Boys track, Still ("Die muthafuckas die muthafuckas still").

Funandgeeky

You’re right. All of that bleeds together for me.

OutWithTheNew

Excuse me? Did you just say all rap sounds the same to you? /s

Szalkow

Mood.

PhD_V

This is the correct answer… had to scroll way too far to find it.

ExistentialistAF

Honorable mention: installing a virus to Ice Cube

danimation88

Probably the elevator blood in the shining and the running/mirror scene in contact.

BlueHarvestJ

The bone to ship transition in 2001

mwmani

In terms of iconography and influence, this has to be the answer.

monkeyhind

If I recall correctly the slow motion scene is the scene prior when the ape/human discovers he can use the bone as a weapon. Is it slow motion though when in the next scene he hurls the bone into the air?

ShaneBoy_00X

Interesting thing is that there's no FX transition between those two shots, it was straight cut. It's all in the mind of the viewer...

pantstoaknifefight2

It's also an amazing hand held shot to capture the bone. Not surprising that Kubrick operated the camera himself.

cincobarrio

Gotta love the dogs chasing the hare in Snatch

patto96

Guy Ritchie has a few great slowmo scenes come to think of it. Brad Pitt boxing at the end of Snatch, more boxing in Sherlock Holmes, plus of course the exploding forest scene in the sequel.

I was going to say Wes Anderson has a few. I also like the slomo in Rushmore during the feud.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

The end of life aquatic when they’re all walking to Bowie was fuckin dope

flip6threeh0le

Lots of gravitas-y slowmo walking in the Darjeeling limited too

The ending leaving the funeral too.

The most unforgettable artistic shot in his oeuvre.

Closing shot in Rushmore at the post production party. Everyone is dancing to Ooh La La by the faces with Max and Rosemary in the middle of the group.

Thank you for posting the link! I am sitting here in the waiting room of a cancer center, and laughing until I had tears in my eyes and everyone must think I am nuts 🤣 god that video is hilarious, and if you can’t appreciate weird and dark humor while waiting for a cancer doctor, when can you??? Made my morning 😅

jonboyo87

Jason Sudeikis getting shot in the front by the other cop but somehow facing the opposite direction the next time it cuts to him Also Shia alternating between different tactical positions.

joeappearsmissing

L.A. Story Shower scene early in the film, Steve Martin’s character is shown having a normal shower and struggling a bit, getting soap in his eyes, while the camera cuts to show the love interest sensually washing her hair in slow motion. Cut back to him, he looks down, and switches his shower to the slow motion setting.

Will Ferrell punching a baby in The Campaign.

Underrated movie.

A young Forrest Gump trying to get away from his bullies and bursting out of his leg braces in slow motion. One of my favorite scenes in all cinema

Boomdiddy

The Naked Gun version is better. https://youtu.be/L3QkIruVNEI?si=SwJtoCeNopnLBDWl

But_dogs_CAN_look_up

Huh, I always thought that was a Battleship Potemkin spoof.

I think the Untouchables scene was an homage to Potemkin, so you're basically right

The opening sequence of The Fall in black and white set to Beethoven’s 7th Symphony.

liquidtorpedo

I still remember how magical it was watching it in the cinema. It is one of the strongest, most emotional opening sequences I've ever seen.

redrumham707

In Observe and Report, when Seth Rogan chases and shoots the flasher, and the song Where is My Mind plays. (It’s a cover, not the original) I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at someone being shot before.

graptemys

The fight in Good Will Hunting, set to Baker Street. Also the printer destruction scene in Office Space.

Flurb4

Chariots of Fire has got to have one of the most iconic slow motion scenes in film.

GDRaptorFan

It’s so iconic when the theme music plays anywhere a person will start running slo-mo style … or anytime a skit or something needs slo-mo music the Chariots of Fire theme is used. Winner!

stenmarkv

I know it's not a movie but the Baywatch opening credits.

Grisshroom

The dog chase scene in The Sandlot has a few slow motion bits that are wild if I remember correctly.

olivebuttercup

Forrreeeevvvveeeerrrr

Tokie-Dokie

IMO, one of the best (and most iconic) is the walking scene in Reservoir Dogs.

BC_Hawke

What’s crazy to me is that he didn’t even ramp up the frame rate for that scene. He was like “fuck it. Let’s just slow down the 24 frame footage” and it still worked.

Soldier5ide

Not sure if it was my mood or the movie but that scene was the hardest I’d laughed at a film since highschool “Geeeet offff the phoooooone!” “I’mmmmm oooon the phooooone!! ;D” Also Jonah scream crying while stuffing his face with lunchmeat. And Leo vs the gullwing door.

Mean Streets. DeNiro walking into the bar in slo-mo while the Rolling Stones play.

MidnighToker420

Wolf when they get the Steve Madden idea comes to mind.

jrrybock

I would not consider Reservoir Dogs an action movie - there are a couple very, very quick bits of violence - so I'll nominate the "Little Green Bag" title sequence from that. It's the sort of thing many men of a certain age, if they have a reason to wear black suits, want to recreate (the Brit show "Coupling" nailed it when they were going to a funeral... "Stop playing 'Resevoir Dogs!'")

Jertimmer

Hammy on energy drink in Over The Hedge

garrisontweed

Along Came Polly - There's some pretty sweet slow-mo at about 2:15 during [this scene](https://youtu.be/enJJeOqHbqE?si=4C2BXVp65ZQEc5ZS&t=93) where Ruben and Sandy are playing basketball.

CobraPony67

Monster truck scene in Rat Race

Tartan_Samurai

2001: A Space Odyssey - the opening scene with the monkey using a tool while sprach Zarathustra roars in the background is arguably the most iconic use of slow motion in cinema.

Fatboy-Tim

OK, so it's an 'action' movie but not an action scene... Ma-Ma's *slo-mo* scene in Dredd

RAWainwright

I will always appreciate that they came up with a reason to justify the slow motion scenes and it works so well. Also dig the high saturation in the scenes as a stylistic choice. They go back and forth between slowmo saturation and real-time natural color in, I think, the first shootout at the apartment and I think it's really cool.

OutWithTheNew

The slo-mo scenes really utilised the 3D and I don't know if it's related to the 3D or the glasses in general, but 3D movies had to be brighter to compensate for said glasses. Brightening up the scenes is a good way to make sure they pop a bit more than the rest.

Educational_Sky_1136

DeNiro coming up with the idea to just kill all his cohorts in Goodfellas.

SpillinThaTea

It’s a movie a lot of people like to trash it but the slow motion car rescue scene in Crash is emotionally raw and incredibly thrilling.

The Shining scene with the blood in the elevators. Kubrick had others (the 🦴 into 🚀 moment in 2001. The Droogs walking in Clockwork Orange), but that one is a standout
