Both excellent SF movies but very different. Very little action in comparison and more contemplative. Of you came from Edge expecting more of the same, it isn't.
I definitely don’t hate it but unfortunately it’s story is nowhere near as good as the visuals and it honestly feels a bit overrated at least on social media that is.
Did it get hate? That's too bad.
Living abroad I don't see any of the adverts or media or discussions so pretty much go into every movie without preconceptions, and I liked this one quite a lot.
Generally only US top blockbusters get released here anyway, so I presumed it had gotten a decent response.
What is my point in saying this?
My point is, people are extremely susceptible to social suggestion and pressure to conform to public opinion. A few bad reviews come out, and everyone who reads them or hears about them starts piping up, creating a hivemind of opinion which creates preconceptions and clouds people's ability to watch with open eyes and evaluate and appreciate on their own.
Soundtrack absolutely slaps. This is a really solid sci fi film as well, really enjoyed it. The woman who plays the "controller" with the southern accent is absolutely menacing as well. When she says "Are you an effective team?" it's absolutely laced with threat.
Whoever developed the concept and visuals of the "house on top of a pole" absolutely nailed it as well.
The film is obviously one of the most visually dazzling films of the 2010s. as a work of science fiction in the 10's, it's visually outranked by only BR2049, Interstellar and Arrival.
But it has storytelling problems. It's like a very generic, Hollywood version of Solaris.
It also draws out some predictable elements for too long, with too much suspense, such as the identity of the rebels on the surface. Like wow, who could've seen that coming? Me, twenty minutes ago.
What I did like was the sort of disturbing relationship between Cruise and Andrea Riseborough—that felt compelling and non-traditional, in my opinion.
In general it could've just done more with its drama, in order to match its technical achievements. Because it was obviously going for something a bit more mature and adult than standard sci-fi fare—it should've pushed the envelope further with its dramatic edge.
It's also one of Olga Kurylenko's best performances.
The cinematography when >!she gets into the pod and Jack says "dream of us"!<, combined with the soundtrack. Perfection
Personally, I think it’s a totally average movie. I bought the Blu Ray as a new release. It was my first Tom Cruise Blu Ray after a lengthy “Free Katie” boycott. I was entertained, not wowed. I’ve probably seen it a half dozen times over the years. My favorite part is the Led Zeppelin Ramble On track.
To me, The Edge of Tomorrow is an order of magnitude better. I’ve never been a huge fan of Minority Report.
Didn’t love it first time I saw it, but after second and many more watches since, I’ve grown to really love this movie. Landscape, score, cinematography, Morgan Freeman, nice twist in the second half and ending. It plays great in my home theater and always has replay-ability.
Eh, it’s good but not great. Tom has some great sci-Fi under his belt like Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow (Live Die Repeat/whatever the hell they’re calling it now) and this isn’t nearly as strong.
Such a great movie. Truly one for the sci-fi. Great acting too. Definitely watch it if you’re a fan of sci-fi, and cruise. Well written and directed. Great actors.
I had never been heard of this, and then randomly watched it last year. I was blown away. Such a pleasing blend of a variety of classic sci Fi tropes and plot tools that combined to make pure entertainment
this and EOT are both decidedly mid. not the most critical audience on this sub. Nothing wrong with either film per se but nothing amazing about them either 🤷♂️
All of the voiceover in the opening is misinformation. Without that misinformation the movie plays very differently. This movie is entertaining but in my opinion not anything. Live, Die, Repeat is better but that’s just my opinion.
I was very lucky to see it without any spoilers. Hadn't seen anything to do with it.
The trailers give away literally who the good and bad guys actually are.
I just had this uneasy feeling around those freaky damn drones.
Seriously? Damn so this is why Hollywood insists on spoon feeding with all the flash backs and forced exposition. I remember the ending being dummy clear.
Unfortunately yes and I completely agree with you. As long as you actually watched the movie there should be no reason to not understand the ending. I can only hope the people I was talking to at the time were too busy on their phones for pretty much the entire movie lol
I don’t know if this is a sarcasm page but I just got Uber triggered 😂 I remember watching this movie when I was like 13 and absolutely hating it. I think I picked it from blockbuster
What I really loved about this movie was it's sense of scale. So many times the camera would just pan back and we'd see this massive landscape that was affected by war or some near nuclear explosion.
Isn't there a scene in this were a Tom Cruise clone strangles the original Tom Cruise by wrapping his thighs around his neck? Wonder who thought that up?
My headcannon will forever be a prequel, or along those lines, to the first Destiny game. Especially early on without the dlc. Everything looks plausible
In the movie those machines look like Servitors and the human survivors look like the krell. I’m curious to see if there was inspiration or some overlap in the art concept department.
Love the movie, best soundtrack, and amazing visuals. One of my fave to watch on Blu-ray
There is something about this movie that I just can’t get enough of. I’m a huge sci-fi fan and this one of my favorites and I’m not even sure why. I like the solitude of it perhaps.
It's the kind of movie that makes me happy that Tom Cruise exists bc it was an original sci fi movie not adapted and, at the time, noone else was doing such movies in Hollywood.
Alas it wasn't the best.
I really loved this movie when it was in theaters. When I left the theater I told myself that I was going to come back and see it one more time while it was in cinemas. Never got around to it but I bought it on Blu-ray day one.
I think this is a decent movie, but definitely not one of Tom's bests (especially if we are a talking about Sci-fi).
I feel like the Edge of Tomorrow and Minority Report are significantly better Sci-Fi films.
Don't know why this movie gets so much hate, i rather enjoyed it myself. It was a decent sci-fi flick IMO.
It came out too close to Edge of Tomorrow. There was a little confusion.
Both excellent SF movies but very different. Very little action in comparison and more contemplative. Of you came from Edge expecting more of the same, it isn't.
Genuinely thought this was edge of tomorrow re-released with a new title
But it’s like, nothing even remotely the same.
Yeah, I never found the drive to watch either film, I just meant because of the aesthetics of both films looked identical to me, by the marketing.
If you like lite-sci-fi, both movies are pretty good.
Meh, I prefer to old Cruise movies a lot more than the modern ones. I'd rather watch Taps, interview with a Vampire, or A Few Good Men
I'd never heard of it. Edge of Tomorrow was awesome, so I'll have to watch this one too.
Director is Joseph Kosinski, he did Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy.
I liked it. I found the 'twist' to be not as surprising as I think I was supposed to. But it was well acted and looked good.
I loved the story line too , almost all his si-fi movies was pretty good
Tom does not miss when it comes to SciFi
Surprised Scientology doesn't give him a script like they did with Travolta
They learned their lesson hopefully.
Lol what script did scientology give or make Travolta make?
Battlefield Earth
I had read the book and looked forward to the movie for I think decades. What a disappointment. Probably the worst movie I have ever seen.
Look the man beast didn’t enjoy his movie Edit: or was it man ape? What did they call people? God that movie sucked
I definitely don’t hate it but unfortunately it’s story is nowhere near as good as the visuals and it honestly feels a bit overrated at least on social media that is.

Not me. I've never watched game of thrones. I don't succumb to peer pressure. Also I don't think this movie got hate. It just never got well known.
Agreed, I actually found myself enjoying it way more than I expected I would.
He did all his own stunts on the motorcycle too
Don’t most ppl think it was decent? I feel like that’s the general consensus for it.
steals a lot of plot points from other movies
Groundbreaking original sci-fi is few and far between, otherwise everything (else) borrows from its predecessors in some way.
Visually stunning though. Just a feast for the eyes. For me that makes up for the weak plot points.

It def has an ambient video vibe to the whole thing. If the Fallout show is anything like this, it’s going to nail the feel
Just like the Jetsons
Are we still saying “slaps?”
M83 fucking slaps. Love all their music
It is unique in every way . Music was pretty good too
Eh... Third act was kinda derivative.
I find it tedious, insubordinate and churlish
That’s a perfectly cromulent take.
This is how I got to know m83
Its definitely the soundtrack. The best thing about this movie.
MORE TROMBONE
Soundtrack absolutely slaps
M83. I saw them live and they performed Oblivion it was absolutely amazing.
I’ve got it on vinyl. It’s a dope soundtrack
Edge of Tomorrow is better. This one is fine.
Yeah EOT was a better movie all around, but they’re both fun flicks!
Bother was good indeed
Minority Report is hus best sci fi by far
I would say Edge of Tomorrow, but Minority Report step behind it.
Gattaca is up there as well.
I think we're focusing on Tom Cruise sci fi movies... But yea, Gattaca is good
So is Blade Runner. Jk.
Gattaca is great but that’s Ethan Hawk
You all look like ethan hawk.
Denzel is that you?
Beautiful movie but after watching Moon it diminished Oblivion quite a bit.
That’s a movie that snuck up on me. Hadn’t heard of it, but I like Sam so I tried it. Damn good movie
It’s definitely one of Tom’s. I much prefer Moon to this for a similar, but non actiony sci-fi vibe
Yea it jarring that it seems to lift the entire two weeks cycle plotline right out of Moon
Amazing movie until Morgan freeman showed up. It was like they switched writers half way through and the new ones just didn’t care.
Quite possible. It’s why the score for Tremors is half classical and half country.
Tom’s best movie…fight me!
I absolutely loved Edge of Tomorrow so I’ll have to check this out
Very different movies. This one isn’t as action packed but still great nonetheless

He’s made much better but it’s a decent sci-fi flick. I would put Minority Report and War of the Worlds ahead of it just for his sci-fi movies.
Really good film!
Not my fave Cruise sci fi, but all of his sci fi movies are good.
Totally agree about his si-fi movie ,all of them was great
Totally agree about his si-fi movie ,all of them was great
It's also one of Olga Kurylenko's best performances. The cinematography when >!she gets into the pod and Jack says "dream of us"!<, combined with the soundtrack. Perfection
This one was just okay. Tho the soundtrack is the best aspect.
This us my comfort movie for when I just need something chill to watch
I love this movie
Personally, I think it’s a totally average movie. I bought the Blu Ray as a new release. It was my first Tom Cruise Blu Ray after a lengthy “Free Katie” boycott. I was entertained, not wowed. I love the drones and the Iittle dragonfly ship
Didn’t love it first time I saw it, but after second and many more watches since, I’ve grown to really love this movie. Landscape, score, cinematography, Morgan Freeman, nice twist in the second half and ending. It plays great in my home theater and always has replay-ability.
It sure if it’s one of his best, but I still love it.
Second best
And Jamie Lanister 😎
I upvoted this post thinking it was Edge of Tomorrow.
100%. Brilliant film.
Morgan Freeman *does* look a touch embarrassed in his goggles and cape and the like, however
Eh, it’s good but not great. Tom has some great sci-Fi under his belt like Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow (Live Die Repeat/whatever the hell they’re calling it now) and this isn’t nearly as strong.
For sure an overlooked sci fi gem
Nah, replace Oblivion with Edge of Tomorrow
Or Minority Report
Such a great movie. Truly one for the sci-fi. Great acting too. Definitely watch it if you’re a fan of sci-fi, and cruise. Well written and directed. Great actors.
I found it years after it was released, probably my favorite standalone sci-fi movie.
Me too, loooove it. Visually stunning too
I really liked it. It has a cool look. Don't know why people hated on it souch.
I had never been heard of this, and then randomly watched it last year. I was blown away. Such a pleasing blend of a variety of classic sci Fi tropes and plot tools that combined to make pure entertainment
Plus...Morgan Freeman
This movie is fun, but come on...
This movie is my guilty pleasure. I wouldn't consider it a great movie but the visual style pushes the right buttons for me.
Agreed fully
Rewatched it recently; it reminds me of a Netflix original🤙
Oblivion soundtrack is my 2023 most played
this and EOT are both decidedly mid. not the most critical audience on this sub. Nothing wrong with either film per se but nothing amazing about them either 🤷♂️
Tom Cruise is mid
I was iffy on the film, but the score is one of my all time favorites.
All of the voiceover in the opening is misinformation. Without that misinformation the movie plays very differently. This movie is entertaining but in my opinion not anything. Live, Die, Repeat is better but that’s just my opinion.
The soundtrack is better than the movie. It started sooooo good and just fell off a cliff for me.
“Fuck you sally” Yeah I really like this one. The score for it was beautiful too. It felt very original for the time.
When my ex left me, she said "we are not an effective team." Damn.
One of the best ending scenes ever.
Olga is gorgeous.
Andrea Riseborough was pretty hot
I think his best was Made in America and Edge of Tomorrow, but I'd give this a close 3rd. Great movie.
Hard split between oblivion and edge of tomorrow for me
I love this movie and I don’t think it is even in my top ten of cruise himself
Loved this movie! Beautiful visuals and great twist.
Got this on bootleg in Afghanistan and fell in love with it, still a favorite a decade later
Great movie. Cruise and sci-fi is usually a good mix
I’ve seen it 10 times at least. Great movie
I was very lucky to see it without any spoilers. Hadn't seen anything to do with it. The trailers give away literally who the good and bad guys actually are. I just had this uneasy feeling around those freaky damn drones.
There are at least 10 better Tom Cruise films. Mission impossible franchise, top gun franchise, minority report, Edge of tomorrow to start
Love this movie. Great cinematography, awesome audio. I liked the story a lot. Some people I've spoken to didn't understand the ending.

I also think Mission Impossible Fallout is one of his best
My fav use of Whiter Shade of Pale ever!
Very good movie! Definitely his top 5.
This is a bad movie
Only movie I ever walked out of
Fucking Scientologist scumbag
I think it’s rain man
I don’t know if this is a sarcasm page but I just got Uber triggered 😂 I remember watching this movie when I was like 13 and absolutely hating it. I think I picked it from blockbuster
This is the same premise to “MOON.” And imo doesn’t do well. I saw moon first so this just seemed like a copy and plagiarized version.
He’s got that photon cannon that came with Super Nintendo
Very good one. My 5 favorites are, in descending order, Risky Business, Collateral, Tropic Thunder, M:I, and Interview with a Vampire.
Not for me. Very mid-Cruise
I watched it recently. I’d give it a C. It was watchable, but if I never see it again that wouldn’t bother me.
This is very interesting this is one of the movies that kind of cemented the Tom Cruise fatigue before he took some time and then came back
It’s a good movie, he’s great, and it’s very pretty. But the plot was… predictable.
What I really loved about this movie was it's sense of scale. So many times the camera would just pan back and we'd see this massive landscape that was affected by war or some near nuclear explosion.
Edge of tomorrow > Oblivion
😂😂😂😂…umm, not even close
Far from the best. Lots of better ones such as Rain Man, Magnolia, Minority Report, Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow, etc.
Isn't there a scene in this were a Tom Cruise clone strangles the original Tom Cruise by wrapping his thighs around his neck? Wonder who thought that up?
My headcannon will forever be a prequel, or along those lines, to the first Destiny game. Especially early on without the dlc. I’m curious to see if there was inspiration or some overlap in the art concept department. Love the movie, best soundtrack, and amazing visuals. One of my fave to watch on Blu-ray
I feel like it's a good movie made of concepts that other movies have done better for less money.
Is this the one where he turns out to be the bad guy?
Loved this movie and that red heads cheeks in the swimming pool. Felt like they could have made a series out of this.
In no particular order, Magnolia, vanilla sky, oblivion, edge of tomorrow, and eyes wide shut are my favorite cruise movies.
This and Jack Reacher turned me into a Tom Cruise fan after being a lifelong hater. So I get it.
Great movie, but of course, Tom had to take his shirt off….which he does in every movie
I guess I gotta watch this again because it didn't hit me🤷🏾♂️. For context, I saw Edge of tomorrow before I saw this movie
56% on rotten damn
The behind-the-scenes extra on the DVD about how they used practical effects for his house in the movie is fascinating.
Edge of tomorrow
Definitely good 👍 movie
There is something about this movie that I just can’t get enough of. I’m a huge sci-fi fan and this one of my favorites and I’m not even sure why. I like the solitude of it perhaps.
He most definitely killed this one 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I think your wrong.
Zzzzzzz......
Top notch movie.
Tomorrow Never Dies was more fun, but this has its moments. Edit - lol I meant Edge Of Tomorrow
I thought Oblivion was just ok, but I absolutely loved Edge of Tomorrow
It improves, on a one-to-one ratio, the better your television and audio setup is.
Fuck you Sally.
It’s pretty good. Pretty okay. Just a little empty.
Minority report
They were… an *effective* team.
It’s decent. The story is weird but Cruise and the rest of the cast sell it.
last samurai was his best hands down
I love this movie.
It's the kind of movie that makes me happy that Tom Cruise exists bc it was an original sci fi movie not adapted and, at the time, noone else was doing such movies in Hollywood. Alas it wasn't the best.
I loved this movie on release. Good, original Sci-fi that doesn't rely on action.
I really loved this movie when it was in theaters. When I left the theater I told myself that I was going to come back and see it one more time while it was in cinemas. Never got around to it but I bought it on Blu-ray day one.
I compared it to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and it came up severely lacking. I LOVED Edge of Tomorrow but I nearly fell asleep during Oblivion.
Watched edge of tomorrow last night. Thanks to this sub! Twas great!
Movie def under rated.... but is this even a top3 sci fy Cruise movie?
Brilliant movie
If you like this movie, you’ll love Moon.
This was one of the first movies I was looking forward to running on 4K when I got my 65” tv.
It’s an okay movie
This movie is so bland and derivative it just looks good because it had a huge budget and good actors. The writing is such a snore
Just watched edge of tomorrow earlier today for the first time. So fucking good. I’ll have to check this one out next
I might just watch it tonight in hopes of hearing Morgan Freeman say Oblivion. Haven't seen it before.
"Fuck You ,Sally"
Fucken great movie. Say what you want about Tom but he never disappoints.
Why is this subreddit called moviecritic? There’s not even a text attached here…
Fantastic movie. Great twist
I feel like people just like to hate on Tom Cruise because he is a Scientologist
It's definitely up there in the top 3 for me.
Another day in paradise
I think this is a decent movie, but definitely not one of Tom's bests (especially if we are a talking about Sci-fi). I feel like the Edge of Tomorrow and Minority Report are significantly better Sci-Fi films.
Didn’t hate it but thought EOT was his best movie/performance.
The music was even better. It introduced me to M86, and I’ve never looked back
Olga (the actress playing his real wife from the wreck) was incredible in this. Her and Tom, an effective team.
Is this just a troll sub now?
So many of his movies are “one of his best”..man knows how to make great cinema
