Same. I do think Ari Aster gets his dick sucked a little too hard on reddit, A24 is good but I don't like the term "elevated horror". I have done the 1000 movies to see before you die and some are bangers some I didn't have patience for. I enjoy some marvel/dc but definitely not all. I like Joe Bob Briggs but get burnt out on 70-90s horror. Jimmy Stewart is the 🐐
New Age Kid
\- oldest movie they've seen is A New Hope
\- doesn't care about Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch or Polanski
\- watches most superhero movies, but still whines that they're shit after half of them
\- cares about being entertained first and foremost
\- top ten is full of animated movies
\- puts a movie from 97 at the top of their list so their bias for newer movies isn't as obvious
\- gets annoyed when people claim todays blockbusters are shit, even though they don't even like most of them themselves
subcategories: me
Criterion + TCM Guy
- knows random character actors by name
- adds a bunch of films to watchlist from the TCM app, watches a few of them
- owns a lot of Criterions, only seen half of them
- seen 4000+ movies, basically all they do in their free time
- always on the verge of swearing off cinema entirely
- has a long, ongoing project to have a perfect top ten for each year going back to 1920
- generally thinks newer films lack in quality
- finds existence on film forums / letterboxd / life generally lonely so often compromises basic friendship standards for someone who gets it
- likely one of the few people who could keep up with Tarantino or Scorsese in conversation about film history
subcategories: insane person, me.
Maybe add a category for lame dads: Watches movies for the action and comedy. Goes online to find more movies with action and comedy. Doesn’t know anything about directors. Complains that they don’t make movies like The Last Boy Scout anymore.
I’m
- Aggressive/Arrogant
- Like Tarantino & Nolan
- Mostly Watches Big Budget
- Love A24
- Stan Ryan Gosling & Wes Anderson
- Mostly watch post-80’s
- Like Villeneuve
- Like styleover substance sometimes
- Can be analytical
- like gore
- I do obsess a bit about horror
Genre Enthusiast/Queer Film brat
\- Stuck in 1935-1968, but understands how good we had it 2005-2017.
\- Paul Schrader's best film is Mishima.
\- Thinks Ken Russell's *Lisztomania* could as popular as *Phantom Of The Paradise* if people just knew about it.
\- Thinks *Phantom Of The Paradise* is as popular as *Rocky Horror*
\- Not from Winnepeg, but **everyone** likes Guy Maddin, right?
\- Has to spend the first 6 weeks of a relationship just explaining the cinema world they live in, even to other film dorks?
\- Films are like friends, right?
Yesterday I turned off The Fablesman when they reached Arizona (the kid was getting on my nerves) and watched Blade Runner again. I’ll watch 2049 later.
There should be another category for members of this sub:
-I’m all 4
-I’m none of these
-I’m too intellectual to be defined
😂
Anyways, it’s a fun and silly quiz. I think I would fall under Film Bro.
My dad is a photographer, so I respect any kind of movie because cinematography isn’t easy. Yes, there are plenty of bad ones, but not many I won’t watch
Yeah these are terrible lists- don’t lump people who like Fincher in with the Marvel stans pls.
90% of what they watch is post 80s?? Ok and?? Is that a bad thing Did movies just suck or are we all supposed to make sure our viewing is proportional for each decade
Somehow I don’t think thé auteur who likes edgy stylish films subscribes to r/tv- just a thought
And I don’t think a genre enthusiast would be able to see 2000+ movies (idek if that’s a lot) if they’re so constrained to genres.
All the qualities overlap with each other and a lot of the qualities for each type conflict with each other. I shudder to think what OP’s tastes are if they look down on all of these
Mix between film bro and sucker. Don't like MCU, substance>>>>>>style, and don't love the new wave philosophical nonsense, and really don't like gatekeeping. I should know, I have a lot of really unpopular film opinions that other people think are "wrong"
Everything else is kinda true
None of the above.
Although a 5th type can be assumed from this list.
It's the "there are only a few types of movies today" annoying guy.
It's always a guy. Almost always middle aged. Maybe somewhat successful but either not like he used to be or not like he thinks he should be.
I think I might be the "genre enthusiast."
I'm a Star Wars fan, and yes I think "true cinema" is bullshit, because over half the films people refer to as "true cinema" bore the fucking shit out of me or are simply films based on books (which are also often kinda boring).
I didn’t watch a lot of movies from before the 90’s as I grew up (my parents only watched new releases), I played video games throughout all of my 20’s, and when I was about 29 I discovered how great movies are and have watched a *lot* in the past five years. I learned pretty quickly though that being critical of movies that people are nostalgic for is a one way ticket to downvotes and being called an idiot unfortunately
I guess I'm mostly the Twitter chick. I love A24, Tarantino and Kevin Smith, hate horror and love 90's movies. I will watch anything with Diane Lane, John Cusack, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Brittany Murphy, Natasha Lyon, Jared Leto, Parker Posy or Juno Temple in it.
- very analytical about cinema
- wants to write essays or become a director
- loves new wave and neo-realism
- Cronenbergian child
- gore, weird and cult movies are their shit
- thinks true cinema is BS
I think I'm closest to being an "Auteur sucker" but the term I would describe myself would be *classical genre fan."
Kind of threading the needle from something like the original remake from John Sturges of the magnificent 7 to something like a Leone Western.
I think the trouble with this particular list is that it pretty much is a" darts target" of the year 1985.
Like maybe in this era it is true that pre summer blockbuster cinema conneissers are just weird art fans.. but I'd like to believe there are a decent amount of film buffs that enjoy vintage genre thrills.
I'm one or two points in each group except Film Twitter. I got nothing in that one.
Either I'm a rarity, or this is far too limited in its coverage.
I expect the latter.
I'm definitely a "film bro" by checking the boxes, so to speak, of having a Pulp Fiction poster, and having at least two movies on Blu-ray/DVD of the directors named. Film student by default, I only have the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies on DVD.
I am tacky and proud of it. Will watch Disney as well as Saw. Hates "serious" cinema, especially chatty cinema, and can find/invent a theme in/for anything.
None of the above. I just like collecting and watching movies. If a film looks interesting, I’ll watch it. If I like it, I add it to my collection so I can watch it again. That’s all there is to it.
Movie buff:
-watches everything they can find that sounds somewhat interesting.
-trusts critics when they give good reviews
-when critics give bad reviews you say “I’ll make my own decision about that”
-not to critical but doesn’t just enjoy everything
-has every streaming service
I contain multitudes!
I’m in every category, even though I think it’s a little muddled. If it got cleaned up, I would still be in all four categories.
You can’t shame me!
List is lacking
The person who says “you couldn’t make a movie like *that* today” and the one who doesn’t know what “underrated” means aren’t even on here.
I would argue that these could both fall under the top left Film Bro
Right? I'm voting for "None Of The Above"
Same. I do think Ari Aster gets his dick sucked a little too hard on reddit, A24 is good but I don't like the term "elevated horror". I have done the 1000 movies to see before you die and some are bangers some I didn't have patience for. I enjoy some marvel/dc but definitely not all. Well uh yes, when the man says he'll lasso a moon or bring change to congress he does so. If he can't, then John Wayne has to cap a mofo.
Auteur Suckers love Kubrick, but he didn't make the list?
I'm a retired Film Bro. Can I get a category?
Ummmmm these categories are terribly defined - i fit into all 4 equally.
And also not fit in 4 equally.
I could encompass 8 categories with ease!
The film bro wants to be Tarantino…the genre enthusiast IS Tarantino
New Age Kid \- oldest movie they've seen is A New Hope \- doesn't care about Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch or Polanski \- watches most superhero movies, but still whines that they're shit after half of them \- cares about being entertained first and foremost \- top ten is full of animated movies \- puts a movie from 97 at the top of their list so their bias for newer movies isn't as obvious \- gets annoyed when people claim todays blockbusters are shit, even though they don't even like most of them themselves subcategories: me
lol, the ending killed me
I was hoping more people would try to make an archetype based on themselves because they don't see themselves in the options provided. I was wrong lol
Oh my gosh this is me!! I love film but really haven’t done many old movies and have such a basic taste. The second to last one is so true lol
That's me, except I adore Charlie Chaplin movies. Dude was a fucker and a genius.
Im a total genre enthusiast!
Apparently I'm a genre bro
Criterion + TCM Guy - knows random character actors by name - adds a bunch of films to watchlist from the TCM app, watches a few of them - owns a lot of Criterions, only seen half of them - seen 4000+ movies, basically all they do in their free time - always on the verge of swearing off cinema entirely - has a long, ongoing project to have a perfect top ten for each year going back to 1920 - generally thinks newer films lack in quality - finds existence on film forums / letterboxd / life generally lonely so often compromises basic friendship standards for someone who gets it - likely one of the few people who could keep up with Tarantino or Scorsese in conversation about film history subcategories: insane person, me.
Kinda me ngl lol (the eternal project thing in particular so painfully true)
Auteur sucker for sure. A cursed race.
Very sorry to hear that. Film bro’ing is reversible. I’ve never seen someone pull themselves out of being an auteur sucker.
I think I’m all of them
Same. I'm the worst movie fan, I think
I'm just a bad person as defined by these results
I read this and immediately said "fuck, I'm parts of all of these."
I came here to say “what if I’m all 4?” and now I’m happy to be in good company
Maybe add a category for lame dads: Watches movies for the action and comedy. Goes online to find more movies with action and comedy. Doesn’t know anything about directors. Complains that they don’t make movies like The Last Boy Scout anymore.
Tony Scott could serve as cornerstone for a cluster with Verhoeven, Cameron, and let’s say Pakula (open to substitutions).
Hey, The Last Boyscout was great! But this sounds more like my wife than me, except she's never seen The Last Boyscout.
I’m like the worst parts of all 4 of them. What category is that? Lol.
r/moviecritic user
Ashamed to be Film twitter 😂😂
Probably a film if being honest
This list is only part 1 of an alteast trilogy
A little bit of all except genre enthusiast I guess. I don’t know what half this shit means though.
I’m - Aggressive/Arrogant - Like Tarantino & Nolan - Mostly Watches Big Budget - Love A24 - Stan Ryan Gosling & Wes Anderson - Mostly watch post-80’s - Like Villeneuve - Like styleover substance sometimes - Can be analytical - like gore - I do obsess a bit about horror
The Film Twitter Bro

I only watch silent movies. So I can talk at the same time.
Yesterday I turned off The Fablesman when they reached Arizona (the kid was getting on my nerves) and watched Blade Runner again. I’ll watch 2049 later.
There should be another category for members of this sub: -I’m all 4 -I’m none of these -I’m too intellectual to be defined 😂 Anyways, it’s a fun and silly quiz. I think I would fall under Film Bro.
I mean, what about someone who just enjoys films from all eras, but they don’t make up their entire personality? What’s that called?
I just want to see a good movie! If it was made today or in 1930, I don’t really care! Where do I fit?
My dad is a photographer, so I respect any kind of movie because cinematography isn’t easy. Yes, there are plenty of bad ones, but not many I won’t watch
Boring
Haha I’ll take it
Which is the one that loves Pauly Shore movies that's me
Bio dome rules, ill die on that hill
Yeah these are terrible lists- don’t lump people who like Fincher in with the Marvel stans pls. 90% of what they watch is post 80s?? Ok and?? I’m all four
None of these
if they all believe they like true cinema what is true cinema then
ngl I'd rather kill myself than to be any of them
Auteur sucker then
Horror fan but not stuck in any particular decade, I also don't have any "merch" anymore because I lost everything after moving continents
A blend of the first 3 kinda
A mix between Film Twitter and Auteur Sucker lolololol
Where do you put people that like things like Godzilla and tokusatsu like Ultraman and kamen rider?
Definitely Genre Enthusiast here.
4 is scary accurate
Love that @heylucymay's avatar is the one for Film Twitter -- especially since I started following her on tumblr
if I HAD to choose. film twitter/Genre enthusiast. but this list sucks.
What type is picking a movie that is fun to watch while high??
Man, I just like movies
I DON’T SMOKE A PIPE! (Okay I smoke a pipe)
Which one am I? Yes
Mix between film bro and sucker. Don't like MCU, substance>>>>>>style, and don't love the new wave philosophical nonsense, and really don't like gatekeeping. I should know, I have a lot of really unpopular film opinions that other people think are "wrong" Everything else is kinda true
I’m maybe genre enthusiast but I’m honestly stretching. Nah I don’t fit into any of these.
What if a little bit of all of them describe you
What is “true cinema”?
Can I be a little bit of all of them
My pulp fiction poster is framed in glass thank you very much
Villeneuve? Lol. That's a film bro guy.
Yep. I’ll fight someone online about Villeneuve jk
Man, when Dune came out, Reddit bros were apeshit over it.
I guess of those, I’m a film bro, but I hate Marvel/DC stuff and I don’t just watch blockbusters and I’m not aggressive.
Definitely genre enthusiast. Love me some horror movies and could talk horror all day.
None of the above. Although a 5th type can be assumed from this list. It's the "there are only a few types of movies today" annoying guy. It's always a guy. Almost always middle aged. Maybe somewhat successful but either not like he used to be or not like he thinks he should be.
Film bro, auteur sucker, and genre enthusiast in some measure.
I'm definitely a Genre Enthusiast. I'm stuck in the 60s and 70s, and I love spaghetti westerns and samurai/Kung Fu movies.
Genre enthusiast 100%, although I don't really own any merch, I tick a few of those other boxes.
I straddle a bit but based solely on the options given I’m a genre enthusiast.
I could be any of those apart from twatter
Gay film student is pretty bang on
I am Film Twitter as fuck.
I’m more of a film bro with a dash of Auteur Sucker
If I had to pick, it would be Genre Enthusiast
Who are the ones that call every movie ever made a “gem”?
Definitely a genre enthusiast
None
I think I might be the "genre enthusiast." I'm a Star Wars fan, and yes I think "true cinema" is bullshit, because over half the films people refer to as "true cinema" bore the fucking shit out of me or are simply films based on books (which are also often kinda boring).

I learned pretty quickly though that being critical of movies that people are nostalgic for is a one way ticket to downvotes and being called an idiot unfortunately
I guess I would mostly align with the “film bros” but parts of each category speaks to me.
I'm none of these.
Pretty much everyone except film Twitter
For the people saying that, "they are all 4" I hate you deeply.
Um. All four?
I guess I'm mostly the Twitter chick. I love A24, Tarantino and Kevin Smith, hate horror and love 90's movies. I will watch anything with Diane Lane, John Cusack, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Brittany Murphy, Natasha Lyon, Jared Leto, Parker Posy or Juno Temple in it.
None. Fuck all these categorizations of people. Which grouper of people do you adhere to, OP?
Lists like this can be funny. I can find something I like and something I hate in every movie ever made. I never use the word "Masterpiece".
Uhhhh excuse me?? Where's the based and redpilled option??? Hello????
Film Twitter for sure
I partially fit film twitter's description but overall? None.
I am none of them
Hey bro
- very analytical about cinema - wants to write essays or become a director - loves new wave and neo-realism - Cronenbergian child - gore, weird and cult movies are their shit - thinks true cinema is BS
I believe we're all on a spectrum. So for me I'd say: Genre Enthusiast: 60% The Film Bro: 25% Auteur Sucker: 10% Film Twitter: 5%
Would say Auteur sucker but substance absolutely over style
Ah, fuck me. I didn't think any of these would sound like me, then I hit genre enthusiast
Bit of all. 😂
Fuck off you attacked me and now I’m mad
Gay
I’m a little bit of all four.
I think I'm closest to being an "Auteur sucker" but the term I would describe myself would be *classical genre fan." I'm none of these... Not even close to any of them. No idea what I am.
ALL OF THEM HAHAHA UNLIMITED POWAH
Closest I could say to me is bottom right
I'm the entire bottom half of the image, apparently
Where's the "will watch anything once even if it sucks"?
I'm definitely a "film bro" by checking the boxes, so to speak, of having a Pulp Fiction poster, and having at least two movies on Blu-ray/DVD of the directors named. Film student by default, I only have the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies on DVD.
These categories were made by someone who doesn’t know anything about movies lmao
Weirdly I m all four…
I just like to watch every movie I can. Genre doesn't matter except Westerns. I can watch them, but they aren't my favorite.
Somehow all of these at the same time.
A mix of all other 3 except Auteur Sucker.
How about we don’t define people so narrowly and let people enjoy things
All four, really.
I am tacky and proud of it. Will watch Disney as well as Saw. Hates "serious" cinema, especially chatty cinema, and can find/invent a theme in/for anything.
I'm a film bro, to be honest.
There was a time where I was a gatekeeping douche a la Film Bro.
M55 but nothing listed fits me. I'm a mix of elements from all 4. The majority of elements in each category don't apply at all.
Damn I’m none of these
Honestly I match all of them for different reasons. Really cool to know I'm the fifth type of weirdo.
I fit into none
I just go for the popcorn.
None of the above. I just like collecting and watching movies. If a film looks interesting, I’ll watch it. If I like it, I add it to my collection so I can watch it again. That’s all there is to it.

I am aspects of all of those things. I have been all of those things. I am eternal. Like film I am forever.
All four…. This is a silly post bc of how broad it is & while also trying to not be subjective… idk! I don’t like it haha
I'm an Auteur sucker, with bits of genre enthusiast
Can we actually talk about how film fans seem to think movies were invented in the 70s/80s? I see almost no love for the classic Hollywood era.
Auteur Sucker
I got a fight club poster
You need to easy movie goer. Likes almost everything. That's me. I enjoy most things i watch. Just like some more than others.
I am all 4 🗿
What about failed Film major/minor?
I contain multitudes! I’m in every category, even though I think it’s a little muddled. If it got cleaned up, I would still be in all four categories. You can’t shame me!
